Speedy,

I am experiencing technical difficulties in posting a response to your post of 26 June.  To overcome them I am going to make sequential mini posts.  In general I agree with your plans and refer you to my previous posts regarding SEAC and SWPac strategy.

Speedy,

You may not need an army of 4000 AV to recapture the Malay peninsula.  Firstly, your screenshot shows only Singapore has a substantial garrison.  Therefore a small flying armoured column from Victoria Point may suffice to capture all the, excepting Singapore, Malay bases before reinforcements arrive.  Secondly, Moses's AAR v jwilkerson shows that the Port Moresby defenders AV was halved because a paradrop occurred simultaneously with the amphibious landing.  Therefore if you "borrow" a para unit from the Americans and drop it on Singapore on the same turn as you both land over the beach a brigade and cross the river with the main body, the Singapore defenders AV may be considerably reduced.

Speedy,

For the reasons outlined in my post of 11 June, I am not convinced that you will move on Bangkok via Rahaeng that quickly, whereas you can approach Bangkok from the west (ie Victoria Point) quite quickly.  You should not stop west and north of Bangkok.  Instead blitz into Bangkok from the west and when the northern army arrive you can then redeploy the western army to the capture of Singapore.  Admittedly this will entail a river crossing into Bangkok but it has several advantages.

1.  It cuts off the supply line to Rahaeng

2.  It prevents the penguin from putting up a delaying rearguard on the jungle hexes west and north of Bangkok

3.  It neutralises the local Bangkok rresource centres

4.  It forces the penguin to strongly garrison Bangkok, thereby making it easier for you to outflank him by landing, say at Camranh Bay.

Faber is posting the results of a monster Cv clash near Jesselton, including heavy damage to at least two USN fleet carriers.  What can you tell us from the Allied side?

Hi all,

Hi Alfred - thanks for your thoughts

Regarding Malaya - I could do the former but further recon has identified 5 units at Alor Star comprising 23,000 troops. Probably a Bde/Division here. I will need ot mass a force to get through them first. You're right though beyond that there appears to be nothing until Singapore.

I would have an ethical problem in performing the para drop thingy though. I don't see it as being right in defenders AV halving due to that. Don't you think?

As for Bangkok I see a few problems with your plan. Firstly I need to wait until all of my forcves are either - next to Bangkok or moving into it together. The reason I say that is that there are 50 units here. If I move in piecemeal my forces will be shattered and he could actually kick me out and attempt to move back into Burma! There is only 1 unit inbetween Rahaeng and Bangkok so no Rearguard is happening. Rahaeng has been taken by me and my forces are 30 miles SW of it already.

Bangkok has virtually no industry. Basically anything within B29 range is dead. Even Hanoi has been smashed. As I see it Faber has moved back everything (except the 4000AV trapped in the Burmese jungle) to Bangkok and I have to either move into them en masse, secure a perimeter north and west of them and/or flank them.

---------------------

Hi guys - yes Faber is correct. The first CV battle for months and I suppose it shows Allied overconfidence in that I didnt think he would dare venture out again!

I was surprised for sure. Basically CV Hancock/Bennington TF was patrolling 120 miles north of Jesselton to cover the unloading of men and material there.

Un-announced 2 x Japanese CV TF's appeared 300 miles NNE of my position.

Several raids were launched by both fleets and mine struck first in lightly damaging CV Kaga and Hiyo. CVL Chitose looks screwed though with 2 bomb and 2 torpedo hits.

Then the Japanese struck with a mixture of conventional and Kamikazi attacks from both CV TF's. My CAP performed miracles and most of my ships are virtually out of AA but they were simply overwhelmed by the afternoon. By sunset the following hits had been achieved:

CV Hancock - 1 x Kamikazi, 6 x bombs, 4 x torpedoes.
CV Bennington - 4 x Kamikazi, 7 x bombs.

Amazingly they are both still afloat and I am HOPING to save them by a miracle. They are damn sturdy ships. Attached screenshot of damage. What is even more amazing is that CV Hancock already had 22 SYS damage before this battle due ot earlier Kamikazi hits

The good news (if any) from this is that 232 enemy aircraft were lost today. As such his CV's must be down to perhaps 50-60% strength.

I have numerous P38J's, P51D's and now Corsairs at Jesselton. My aim is to send all of my shipping (including CVE TF) just north of Jesselton into Jesselton whereby all available P51D/P38J fighters will fly CAP from Kuching/Jesselton.

It is a risk I know since being near land will reduce flying capacity by 1/2 but it will allow me to manage all ships in a 60 miles hex under a (hopeful) mass of CAP. At the same time the (former) CA/CL/DD CV escorts are now formed into a sC TF to protect the ships from Japanese sea attack.

Hopefully I can blunt any Japanese air attack enough to allow my damaged ships to somehow survive and move back through Kuching.

Note I am not hopeful either CV will survive but I will try my hardest.

A good fun battle over all and nice see Faber still fighting.

--------------------------

CentPac -

The invasion fleets detected SS I-29 today and a couple of DE's cornered her and sank her.

All being well my invasion forces will reach Iwo Jima tomorrow or the day after at the latest. 2 x BB TF's will attempt to shell the place overnight.

Chiming in from the peanut gallery here: Having paratroopers drop into and behind your positions while a frontal assault in underway should have a major impact. I'm sure it would vary from situation to situation (not sure if the game handles it variable or what, though). So, I do see it as being ethical and good game play.

Hi all,

Hi witpqs - hmm. A fair response. Maybe it's something i'll think on....if and when I get to that stage

---------------------

Burma -

The Allies continue to advance from Burma with lead ARM units 90 miles from Bandou and the mass army 240 miles NE of Bangkok.

Airfields are now operational at Rahaeng and operations will be flown from here now.

----------------------

SRA -

An interesting day in that I was expecting some crucial action here but bad weather prevented almost all operations from both the Japanese and Allied side! Recon has identified the Japanese CV's 180 ENE of Jesselton. All of my ships have made Jesselton and there maybe be a chance to save CV Bennington after herculean efforts from DC parties (screenshot attached).

I feel safer here than I did yesterday. Every day brings more planes to the airfield and a reduction in the damage to my CV's. Some other very good news is that the SC TF that made Jesselton has had time to rearm since they were very low on ammo. If the Japanese attempt a night surface attack with anything other than BB's I should be able to handle them.

Recon has identified enemy airfields as being active at Miri, Brunei and Tarakan. B29's will try to strike 2 of these.

---------------------

CentPac -

The invasion of Iwo Jima has begun.

Although quite a few mine hits were sustained and CD guns did their job i'm actually fairly content with the results.

7 ships sank - LCI(G), MSW, DE etc.

About 50 more damaged. Of these about 20 will sink at present (MSW, DD, DE, LCI(G), LST) etc.

The most annoying one was CVE Chenango is at 50/41/16. The damaged DD's and CVE will move back to Saipan.

Now the good news. The troops that are ashore are in good order. Probably about 10% disabllement. Plenty more are to come and I think another positive result of me splitting Fabers forces can be seen here since he doesn't have a lot of men there (1 x Division, 1 x Bde +):

Ground combat at Iwo Jima

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 41893 troops, 519 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault Value = 958

Defending force 41470 troops, 639 guns, 12 vehicles, Assault Value = 2103

Allied ground losses:
50 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

I expect to quite comfortably take this place within 7-10 days.

Hi all,

A very eventful day in the Pacific War..................

------------------

Burma -

Allied units are still moving towards Bandou. A further 3 x Division + 4 x ARM Bn's are moving there as well now in preparation for the move into Malaya.

------------------

SRA -

A very good day here. Hope remains in the saving of CV Hancock and CV Bennington

IJN CV's remained on station and launched a full strike towards my shipping at Jesselton. They were clearly rookies or mediocre at best since most of the DB/TB's turned back:

Day Air attack on TF, near Jesselton at 35,56

Japanese aircraft
A6M5 Zeke x 34
D4Y Judy x 77
B7A Grace x 35

Allied aircraft
FM-2 Wildcat x 15
F6F Hellcat x 8
F4U-1D Corsair x 15
P-38J Lightning x 5
P-51D Mustang x 29

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M5 Zeke: 34 destroyed
D4Y Judy: 32 destroyed, 4 damaged
B7A Grace: 24 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-38J Lightning: 3 damaged

Quite a few annoying counterstrikes by my now land based CV TBM's. In total 15 x TBM dropped torpedoes against CV Shokaku, CV Zuikaku, CV Akagi and CV Taiho for no hits

A recently vectored submarine (SS Seawolf) scored a hit though.......on the escorting DD Maki causing heavy damage.

I suspect Faber will retreat now since his CV's must be low on planes and Jesselton is getting stronger by the day with P51D's and Corsairs..........

In total 174 enemy planes were lost today to 47 Allied. B29 raids on Brunei and Tarakan helped this tally by c.20.

I'll keep a heavy CAP and a strong SC TF presence at Jesselton in the hope of saving both CV's. I feel Bennington has a decent chance of survival but Hancock is in the balance for sure.

---------------------

CentPac -

Iwo Jima was a hive of activity throughout the day. If the number of hits achieved on my ships were reality, or the number of troops allowed on Iwo Jima, or Uber CAP etc.....anyhow look at this as an example:

2204 Coastal gun shots fired in defense.
Allied Ships
MSW Sheldrake, Shell hits 305, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Pursuit, Shell hits 191, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Gladiator, Shell hits 280, on fire, heavy damage
MSW Signet, Shell hits 233, on fire, heavy damage

AP Moreton Bay, Mine hits 1
LST LST-171, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
LST LST-175, Mine hits 1, on fire
AP Olmsted, Mine hits 1, on fire

Overall another 17 ships (LCI(G), LST, MSW, DE mainly) sank today but a lot of troops are now ashore. I am actually very happy with how the landings have gone. Saipan cost me 70ish ships andmy men were 25-33% disabled. Here my men are in good shape. Check out the attachment. This is the general state of my men who will attack tomorrow.

Faber launched a CL/DD force into the fray overnight. It was a fairly one sided battle with only the American CA Pensacola recieving heavy damage from a torpedo and 3 x 6" shells (76/48/10):

Night Time Surface Combat, near Iwo Jima at 63,53

Japanese Ships
CL Oyodo, Shell hits 4

Speedy,

Looks like my concerns regarding rearguards was not warranted now that you have actually captured Rahaeng and are moving rapidly.

Regarding the paradrop, it could be gamey, however I think Moses covered the issue well in his AAR.  A paradrop of only a few squads would be gamey, but dropping an entire unit is not IMHO.  I could be mistaken but isn't the largest Allied para unit brigade sized?  Dropping one that large is OK.  I see it as vertical envelopment combined with land flanking (river crossing) plus amphibious landing in the rear.

The difficulty in coordinating attacks from 3 directions does merit some reward.  After all, if the attacks go in independently, they would be bloodily repulsed.  Even after perfect coordination halves the defenders AV, it is most unlikely that you would actually capture Singapore on the first assault.  What you would achieve would be a solid lodgement and a sound start to reducing Singapore's fortification levels.

Hi all,

Burma -

USA Soldiers have reached Bandou and will take the empty place tomorrow.

A B29 raid on Hanoi's airfields netted 50 enemy transport planes.

---------------------

SRA -

The IJN made it's presence felt again by attempting a risky night attack. They were surprised by my SC TF and American Radar and gunnery proved superior over the 40 minute battle. By the end of the night the following losses had been sustained:

Allied:

DD Bearss
DD Howorth
PT PT-257

Japanese:

DD Makinami
DD Asashimo
DD Fubuki
DD Arare
DD Ume
DD Numakaze

Heavy damage was sustained to 1 x US DD and CL Nagara and CL Tatsuta.

A 2nd airfield should be finished at Jesselton tomorrow and the port enlarged in 5 days tim. This will allow me to dock damaged ships including my CV's

When I have stabilised the area around Jesselton - shouldn't take more than a week - I need to decide what exactly to do with my men at Kuching and Jesselton. I think i'll para drop on a couple of nearby empty places ot keep Faber on his toes and to uncover new opportunities for me - places like Jolo for example............

--------------------

CentPac -

Many many more ships were damaged by CD/mines at Iwo Jima today. About another 20 ships will probably sink now and a further 8 did today.

The good news is that progress was made today on the ground:

Ground combat at Iwo Jima

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 161316 troops, 1681 guns, 49 vehicles, Assault Value = 5144

Defending force 66268 troops, 634 guns, 4 vehicles, Assault Value = 962

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 8

Allied max assault: 3793 - adjusted assault: 4797

Japanese max defense: 815 - adjusted defense: 2935

Allied assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 8)

Allied Assault reduces fortifications to 8

Japanese ground losses:
867 casualties reported
Guns lost 10
Vehicles lost 2

Allied ground losses:
1304 casualties reported
Guns lost 28

A few Kamikazi's sank 2 x LST and hit a couple of freighters in the area today.

I am embarking men at Tarawa bound to re-conquer Maloelap which holds 13,000 Japanese which have been starved for a year.

Hi all,

Back from a week's Holiday and the war continues..............

Burma -

Allied forces approaching Songkhia in Malaya and the main armies are nearing Krung Threp (for now). Faber has moved 1 of his battered units from the Jungle in Burma to cut the rail way SW of Rahaeng. They attacked weakly though:

Ground combat at 31,36

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 9387 troops, 73 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 200

Defending force 36043 troops, 24 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 487

Japanese max assault: 162 - adjusted assault: 13

Allied max defense: 480 - adjusted defense: 353

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
854 casualties reported
Guns lost 28

Allied ground losses:
11 casualties reported

As such I have decided to move back 8 units from my main army to help this situation whilst other smaller units push EAST of the railine to prevent any enemy supply reaching any Japanese that move onto the railline. In many ways if he moves onto the rail it will make it easier for me to trap him there and destroy him without me having to chase him into the jungle.

-----------------------

SRA -

A quiet couple of days as I consolidate my strength at Jesselton. A 2nd airfield has been constructed and the port will hopefully reach level 3 within 3 days allowing me to dock my damaged CV's.

The last of the former Japanese Kuching garrison has moved back towards Kuching to receive annihliation at my hands

180,000 tonnes of fuel are moving from Darwin to Kuching and a large convoy carrying 10 x airgroup, 300,000 tonnes of supply and 180,000 of fuel will reach Darwin from the US in 3 days. It will hopefully be the last convoy needed from the US since Malaya will hopefully be free soon and supply convoys can come from India.

-------------------

CentPac -

The tough battle at Iwo Jima continues unabated:

Ground combat at Iwo Jima

The invasion of Maloelap will occur in c.3 days time.

Hi all,

Been away most of the week on business in Rome.

A fairly quiet day all round

--------------------

Burma -

Nothing to note here. Allied units will take an empty Songkhia tomorrow. 5 enemy units are reported at Alor Star. There we wil lwait until the main Allied forces catches up.

-------------------

SRA -

I actually think both of my battered Essex class CV's may make it now! Amazingly CV Bennington is down to 57 FLT The level 3 port will be constructed at Jesselton tomorrow where they will be docked.

The final Japanese remnants were killed/captured near Kuching today - 2000 men of the original base force.

--------------------

CentPac -

Iwo Jima bombed heavily from the air and the artillery pounds enemy positions on the ground. My men will continue to rest for now.

Hi all,

Another relatively fairly quiet day.

-----------------------

Burma -

Faber has moved more of his 'Jungle forces' onto the rail line SW of Rahaeng. No real concern as you can see they are very weak:

Ground combat at 31,36

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 61511 troops, 382 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1448

Defending force 59802 troops, 185 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1088

Japanese max assault: 936 - adjusted assault: 60

Allied max defense: 1080 - adjusted defense: 885

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
2735 casualties reported
Guns lost 95

Allied ground losses:
271 casualties reported
Guns lost 3

Songkhia fell today and the USA RCT will now await the other Allied units before moving on the defended Alor Star.

----------------------

SRA -

Jesselton expanded her port to level 3 and both CV's have docked. CV Bennington at 97/55/0 and CV Hancock at 95/29/0. Come on boys you can do it. If so it will be one of the most amazing feats of ship durability I have seen in WiTP.

I am now starting to think where to advance next with the troops I have in northern Borneo. I am going to conduct extensive recon in the surrounding area. I am currently thinking of para dropping on a few islands to the west of Luzon and in time creating an air presence over the PI. then I think the main landing may occur in Indo China to take Bangkok in the arse

The first of my sub laid mine's damages DD Harukaze at Hong Kong

-------------------

CentPac -

A couple fo small Betty raids were launched against shippping around Iwo Jima from the HI. A couple were shot down but a few got through to launch torpedoes but none hit.

7 more ships sank around Iwo Jima today (PG, AK, AP, DD, LST). The men have rested and will attack again tomorrow.

The invasion of Maloelap will commence tomorrow..............

Hi all,

Points:

Japanese: +1919
Allied: +2970

Bases:

Japanese: -10 (+296 points)
Allied: + 10 (+135 points)

Planes:

Allies lost: 807 planes
Japanese lost: 1529 planes

Troops:

Allies lost: 262 points
Japanese lost: 853 points

Ships:

Allies lost: 71 ships (554 points) - mainly from Iwo Jima invasion here. Probably about 60 of these are from Iwo Jima invasion. Costly but to be expected when invading an enemy base protected by mines and CD guns. It will be worth it when the place is mine and Japan is being reduced to rubble....................

Japanese lost: 36 ships - 317 ships - a mixture of DD/CL from Iwo Jima and Jesselton engagements and a selection of a few AK/auxilliaries around Malaya.

---------------------------

Thoughts:

Overall not a great month in terms of point margin but an important month in terms of overall victory. The big 2 actions were the breakthrough in Burma trapping 25 enemy units in the jungle and the invasion of Iwo Jima which when taken will allow me to base fighters there to gain air superiority over Japan.

Luck has clearly been running your way. But considering the historical experience of CV Franklin, it's realistic that the Essex class are tough ships.

Hi all,

Hi Capt. - I agree I have been lucky in some ways. I do think though over the course of the war both sides will receive slices of luck. This time it was for me

------------------

Burma -

Further Japanese elements have advanced onto the rail line SW of Rahaeng. They are very weak though and ripe for the plucking when I have cut off movement to the east and NE for them:

Ground combat at 31,36

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 72021 troops, 178 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2618

Defending force 107553 troops, 398 guns, 448 vehicles, Assault Value = 2321

Japanese max assault: 1036 - adjusted assault: 34

Allied max defense: 2278 - adjusted defense: 2287

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
9005 casualties reported
Guns lost 42

Allied ground losses:
1041 casualties reported
Guns lost 23
Vehicles lost 1

Allied forward units took Krung Thep today and the mass of men are 60 miles behind. More Allied untst will arrive at Songkhia tomorrow to strengthen my position there.

--------------------

SRA -

Well done to faber today. I did not expect him to interfere again after his failed CV attacks on Jesselton but the main Japanese battle line steamed in uindetected throughout the night causing a fair ammoutn of havoc:

Well done Faber

The good news is that my CV's are untouched after this.

For now it leaves me short of airpower in the region. Is this a problem? Not really IMO. At present I have 1 x operational CVE and 1 x lightly damaged CVE in SRA. I am not planning to launch extensive operations here for 4-6 weeks at the earliest.

I have 3 x CVE at Sydney which have repaired battle damage and will move to the region shortly. CV Indefatigable will arrive at Karachi in 3 days time. This will give me a force of 3 x British CV and 3 x CVE which will in due course (when Singapore has been isolated by land) join the SRA forces.

Surface force wise i'm also about to move 2 x British R class BB's (reapired damgaed in Aus) back to SRA and I have BB Howe to deploy as well.

---------------------

CentPac -

The tough struggle for Iwo Jima continues with the enemy in control of only 1/2 of the island now:

Ground combat at Iwo Jima

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 210297 troops, 1903 guns, 688 vehicles, Assault Value = 4873

Defending force 56787 troops, 526 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 890

Hi all,

A fairly quiet day all round with Allied advancing towards Bangkok and towards Alor Star.

A nice sweep by veteran P51D's/P38J's (100) wiped out 9 x George and 51 x Tojo for the loss of 5 fighters over the skies of Singapore.

An AK was scuttled near Jesselton due to damage sustained by IJN yesterday.

Bombardments on the land and from the air at Iwo Jima.

Maloelap was secured today with the final 477 enemy soldiers either surrendering or being killed. Next stop is Kwajalein and then the Solomans..............

Hi all,

Siam/Malaya -

More of the same today with heavy bombing of Bangkok by Allied air and the slow advancement of Allied troops past Bandou towards Alor Star and the expansion of the Allied territory east of the Rahaeng/Bangkok rail line.

----------------------

SRA -

Singapore was abandoned by the Japanese and the fighters and superforts raided and decimated empty airfields. Tomorrow's target is Camranh Bay.

I feel IJN Surface elements are heading back as Mariners detected 2 x TF's heading west near Taytay. All freighters have unloaded and every ship is heading back to Kuching except PT's and the damaged CV's in port.

I am thinking now of my next plan in the area.

At present I have decided to keep him in position at Bangkok whilst my other Burma forces clear Malaya. When they do I will use these forces to land and flank the Bangkok boys probably at Camranh Bay.

In the meantime Allied forces at Kuching/Jesselton are to prepare for the invasion of Hainan. Recon indicates few enemy forces here. When I have British CV's and more CVE's in the area I will attempt this mission. This will probably be 6-8 weeks away. In the interim paras will secure more bases east of Borneo towards PI.

-----------------------

CentPac -

No real action in the area today. Bad weather prevented most air raids at Iwo Jima. My men after shelling and preparing for the day will attack the enemy again tomorrow.

7 more ships (3 x AK, 3 x LST and an AP) sank at Iwo Jima today.

Hi all,

Siam/Malaya -

More of the same in this theatre as Allied units advance on Songkhia.

Bangkok's B29's raid Camranh Bay followed by a P51D/P38J sweep from Kuching. 35 enemy planes were destroyed for the loss of 6 friendly.

CV Indefatigable is on it's way from Karachi to Columbo. I like this puppy - 36 x Corsair, 15 x Firefly (to be used as DB's) and 15 x TBM.

---------------------

SRA -

2 x enemy TF's are within a days sail of Jesselton now. All sea worthy shipping is on it's way back to Kuching now (covered by P51D/P38J from Kuching). Let's hope they don't damage my CV's in port.

---------------------

CentPac -

Enemy airfields on Ulithi were pounded for the first time on the war by B29's from Saipan. Escorted by 54 x P38J they encountered 70 enemy fighters on CAP (Tony, Tojo, Jack). The airfields were pounded and 60 enemy planes were destroyed for 7 friendly.

The fight on Iwo Jima is entering it's last phase before Allied capture. Mount Suribachi was taken today and the enemy is confined to the northern 1/3 of the Island now. We continue to press the attack tomororw:

Ground combat at Iwo Jima

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 211552 troops, 1865 guns, 719 vehicles, Assault Value = 4878

Defending force 53706 troops, 471 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 848

Allied engineers reduce fortifications to 4

Allied max assault: 4187 - adjusted assault: 4737

Japanese max defense: 839 - adjusted defense: 3949

Allied assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 4)

Allied Assault reduces fortifications to 4

Japanese ground losses:
2305 casualties reported
Guns lost 57

Allied ground losses:
1920 casualties reported
Guns lost 51
Vehicles lost 22
