Is it just me. Or am I somehow special (I hope not actually). It never seems to alarm me how reactionary people can be. This might bore you so I am just warning you early on. I love Steel Panthers, damn fine game, and its free. Hey how can you improve on free? I see an new version and whooohoooo I am downloading like crazy. It boggles my imagination that so many have had so much trouble over getting 5.01 though. Sure I had trouble getting on the site when it was still just 5.0. Actually I was still trying to get 5.0 when I realised it was now 5.01. I naturally scratched my head and said hmmm well sure I will take the newer version eh. I havent had the urge to get the Mega Campaign. Sorry guys, it just isnt going to pry my limited cash out of my fingers. I already have the meat of the cd anyways. But to hear the comments I have observed over guys waiting for it to arrive, come on guys slow down. Anyone that actually believes software arrives when the company says it will has a level of gullibility that is just plain funny. Its like the old board style wargames. I was always happy if the company got the correct year for the date of release. Maybe I am being harsh here. But somehow complaining about release dates......it reminds me of the guy that wrote the letter into Finewoodworking claiming making a Humidor project says the magazine promotes smoking. It also seems up there with the person who wrote Macleans magazine complaining about the suggestively posed seemingly nude woman with the lap top in bed was sending the wrong message about working at home. People today want if faster than yesterday. And they are always complaining. I have 5.01 on a disk. I also have the original game 4.1 4.2 4.3 on disk as well. How? I got off my butt downloaded it (not even caring my phone line would be out of contact for 3 solid days, hey I told people to forget trying to phone period). Then I took my hard drive out of my computer found a friend that had a burner and made a copy of it. I have DSL now, big deal. I still dont own a burner. My 5.01 was burnt the same ole way. I refuse to believe anyone on here lives in so remote a location they cant get a copy of the game with next to know effort. So it has to be just people prone to complaining. Now maybe I am wrong. But come on guys. anyone that wants Steel Panthers will get it. And if you have to actually wait a while so be it. I neeeeeever pre order anything. I was taught the fine art of patience. I am fairly sure I am going to get flak for some part or all of this post. Hmmmm I dont care. I think this site, the Matrix dudes, the free software, are all very cool. Its about the only site I actually make any effort to see on a general basis. Would bother me at all if Matrix took till next suummer to get Mega Campaign in mail boxes. They dont owe us anything. Yeah you sent your monies, but that money would have no purpose if they hadnt made Steel Panthers available to you as well.

I support your comments Les - though I can't fault others too much for being impatient. I have other games I'm involved with other games right now (East Front II, e.g.) so it doesn't bother me too much to wait. I would just remind others who are annoyed about not having their CDs get is to remember that Matrix is just getting started out so we have to cut them some slack. They haven't tried to hide or whitewash anything about their problems, so I appreciate their forthrightness. Hang in there everyone.

Now don't think I'm complaining, I'm not. I'm just going to try to take the "other side". Now I've been playing Steel Panthers for almost 7 years now. I was involved in some of the older email forums that were around before Matrix had this fancy bulletin board (... yea and we had to walk uphill in the snow to get to the computer to send our emails!!). I had SPWAW version 1, and before that SPII WWII and the original Mega-Campaign from Novastar. What I'm saying is I feel I kinda-sorta know alot of the people involved in this project. I've had the privledge of corresponding with some them directly so when they said "hey, were having problems", I believed them. More than a few people here have only been involved with Steel Panthers for a relatively short time. At least on this level...that is being able have contact with the actual programmers and developers. Keep in that in mind when you pay for the game almost 4 months ago and have 4 different reasons just the shipping of the game is delayed. Not to mention, the game still has not shipped! We've been given a "definite" date that looks like it will finally happen. Couple that with a changeover to a new system that was full of bugs. And that's not even getting into the prices of shipping for the foreign countries. I really think that if I didn't know these people better I'd have asked for my money back. Please, I'm not complaining. I'm just playing devil's advocate here. I just don't blame some people for losing their patience. [ June 15, 2001: Message edited by: Phil ]

Well Phil I can remember walking uphill in the snow both ways. :D The only problem we have here is simply that of frustration. Will anybodies life end if the game doesn't get here for another year....gee I hope not. Matrix has done a wonderful job of marketing a great game (for free) and then seeing how with more effort they can possibly realize a profit. If the game was terrible nobody would be beating on their door the way everyone (except for Les)is. As for myself, I'm waiting for the flak to die down, for the deliveries to start and then I'll buy the Mega Camp. The cost of the game is a deal to me, considering I have enjoyed Matrix's work for free for so long. I understand the nature of the beast and think that Matrix could have avoided all this hoopla if they had held off on letting everybody pre-order until they had the mechanics of the production and distribution ironed out. So what? This is were we are and all the complaining and pissy comments won't make anything happen faster. The simple fact that the guy's at Matrix are still communicating and apologizing and moving heaven and hell to get this thing right should give everyone hope that at some point everybody will get what they have paid for. So until I figure out how to walk on water (I'm not even close) I will wait patiently for them to straighten it all out. My advice to everyone else, grab another cold beer, throw another shrimp on the barbee and boot up one of the new scenarios that Wild Bill has put out and enjoy the game. Life's way to short to get this worked up.

Agreed Brummagem. As much as I was looking forward to getting the Mega Campaign, (keep in mind I've been waitng for this since Novastar went out of business) I just need to act like a mature person and realize that there have just been some problems with this project and get over it. Shoot, if waiting for the Mega campaign another week is the worst thing that happens to me this year, I'll be doing pretty good.

The post about boardgame companies is certainly apt. I can well remember waiting to see if AH was going to release ANYTHING, let alone something I would actually buy during the year. Frankly, one of the reasons I ordered the CD was to help out Matrix's cashflow problem, KNOWING it would be months likely before I saw a product. Since they legally couldn't take my money for SPWAW, I figured this would be at least a gesture of support. As to the problems, well when they screwed up they admitted it right away, and gave an outline of what was being done to fix it-well done.

Terminal impatience is a common affliction of modern American society. We don't know how to wait. I enjoy seeing my fellow teachers have conniptions when something gets delayed a day, and I can make them go absolutely berserk when I tell them not to believe something until it happens. Capt. Rudy, as a fellow retired Army officer, I understand exactly. I can wait on the Mega Campaign. It will be something fun and interesting to do. It will not be the focus of my life.

I agree with some of your remarks but I live 3500 km away from you guys and in 14 weeks ( I pre-ordered to save ) I have not heard BOO except that is coming I have been patient but when I try to track my order I do not exist and dito for my order. Any where in the world that would have any body worried and as I am worried I do not think I am complaining. If you had ordered a item from O/S and had your credit card debited straight away only to find when you try to track it you get no response, then ask questions but at your end it feels like the closer you are to the country of origin the higher up the priority list you are I bet you would have a bit to say. I have always downloaded the patches from V1 to V5.01 and was and still am happy to pay for a Great game, I just want to know what is happening with my order and yes I too have served in the armed forces here in Australia 8 Yrs 4 in th 3/4 Cavalry Regiment and 4 Yrs in 52 Combat Platoon I know all about patience as I was fortunate to be a Qualified Sniper if that does not make you patient nothing will.

Earlier in this thread someone mentioned downloading the SPWaW took 3 days. Is it possible to download the game over a standard modem? I got the time :D

If you click on "products" at the top of the page, you can follow the links to the download site for SP:WAW. Unfortunately for me, I can't afford to have my phone tied up for 3 days, so I'm hoping UPS has a package for me TONIGHT! :D :D :D :D (according to my tracking # it's at the local hub) :D

How long do you think it would take on a 56k modem? Microsuck Network usually tries to boot me off before my home page loads. This would be a good way to get back at them :D

Yo Update to my thoughts here. Came on to Matrix after spending the weekend reloading software onto my new hard drive. Saw 5.2 patch was there, yipppeeee. So naturally I just started to download it. (was surpised I was able to even get onto Matrix site actually) Its only 9 megs to having 5.2. DSL modem, and before I was even able to send more than a couple of icq messages and a few comments in our chat forum here and its done. Not bad, few minutes and the next time I get to spend time on Steel Panthers I get a new treat. Guys if you are going to persist on playing games on computers, you are just going to have to sacrifice on some other indulgence (say smoking for instance) so you can afford a real connection option. I live on a disability pension eh. Doesnt stop me from soaking in the funds for my DSL line. Yeah I have next to no free spending money. But I know what I want, and I make the adjustmnents to get it. There it is. I can remember when a 56k modem meant something. Its yesterdays news now. One of my friends cant play Everquest cause his computer sucks. Guess that would mean he could play WW2Online either. Whats your gaming worth to ya. I didnt actually enjoy 3 days with a 56k modem. And you can bet I would be using Get right all the way too. Lot of **** can happen in 3 days to a phone line. With cable my buddy dan got steel panthers 5.01 in about 90 minutes. Sure makes a difference eh.

I have to agree with the general sentiment of this thread. I have faith in Matrix and after I pay my credit card bill (my first one, and it only has a $200 limit) I'm going to order the MC disk to (as was said earlier) "help support" Matrix' efforts. For those using a dial-up modem, use the Getright program so that you don't have to download everything in one shot. Also, Les, I liked what you said about a better connection being had at the expense of other expenditures. So true. And if its done at the expense of cigarettes, even better. By the way, here in NY, a pack of cigarettes costs a little less than $5 because of all the taxes our greedy politicians place on a substance as addictive as cocaine. I like to think of that as a great incentive for New Yorkers to quit. All my best \_STUKADAWG_/

Words to the wise. I have already seen at least one posting of comments to the effect "Mega Campaign cd had errors on it" Welcome to the real world. There is no free lunch either. No I aint even remotely pointing any finger at Matrix (they aint responsible for your free lunch either). I got a splash of water in the face the other day. So its not like I cant be suckered either. I bought a package deal a couple of weeks ago. Managed to find all of the East/West front software from Talonsoft on a complilation cd boxed set. The cds wont load correctly. I should have learned my lesson when I bought "The Complete Wargames Collection" both 1 and 2. But I patted myself on the back for getting them so cheaply. There isnt a free lunch though remember. Now personally I am feeling kinda stupid for buying a games cd with games that I "know" wont be any damn different than the games I already have in some form or another. Add to that, that they are all games that are already yesterdays news (I need to smack my head on the wall a while perhaps). I would like to get Mega campaign to some extent. But I have this problem with trying to get something for nothing. I have now struck out 3 times personally (some lessons are hard to learn obviously). I have on reflection, never, and I do mean never unfortunately, had any compilation set of cds work. Maybe I am wrong, but it appears the producers of this sort of product are either cutting corners on product, or there just isnt any free lunch. Where is the connection to Steel Panthers? Well its clear a lot of people have ordered Steel Panthers Mega Campaign as a way of getting Steel Panthers WaW without having to actually download it. I am NOT putting Matrix in the same light as the other manufacturers of post product release re issue of software. But it appears initially to this observer, they might have gotten taken like we all sometimes get taken. Or at least the cd is showing signs it might have been rushed. I have bought original software quite a few times in its original form. I like to get it when its a little stale admittedly (I dont have much choice, full cost is rarely an option). But I like getting the software as it was originally released with the books and all that hooey. And I have yet to purchase software as it was originally packaged and released, and not have it work (each and every time I load it up). In my opinion (and everyones opinion means something) Matrix should discontinue cramming Steel Panthers whatever version onto Mega Campaign whatever version or future notion cds. It would also appear they need to search out a better producer of cds. But that is all just opinion based on observed results that I cant substantiate right now. And for our part. People should refrain from buying Mega Campaign and smiling smugly to themselves that they bought Steel Panthers WaW without the need to download it. It can be argued that it helps to sell Mega Campaign by putting Steel Panthers on the cd. But then again, I have noticed a lot of people have bought the cd, hassle and all, just to support Matrix. Now that is either that is noble sentiment, or they are just saying it because they can, and using it as a smoke screen to salve their irritation from Matrix's unfortunate first attempt. If there truely, IS, enough people out there that wish to support Matrix, then stand up now and be counted along with me. I want Matrix to market Mega Campaign as just Mega Campaign on the disk (and from a cd manufacturer worthy of comment). And I want perhaps to have Matrix market it as a boxed item with perhaps an actual hardcopy of the current manual. And yes I know what I am talking about expense wise. But then again, funds wont be a problem if you get pre orders. And its clear pre orders were not a barrier here with the first Mega Campaign. It was convenient to have the space on the cd I imagine to include Steel Panthers WaW. Myself personally, I would rather have seen a lot of the other download goodies we all know are out there, get put on the disk instead. Scenarios, language files, etc etc. It would have been a lot more practical.
