I am back playing again after being away for a while and have been struck by 2 things:

1. At the default difficulty the Rebels must get a lot of influence because I am fighting huge malitia armies around Boston. I think there are 2 armies in excess of 12,000 men EACH. This is on the default difficulty.

2. Alfred keeps attacking Boston with out actually attacking. We set up for the tactical battle, he has a large army of mostly malitia (out numbers me 2:1 - 3:1). Then he simply withdraws. No shots, but with the time for set up and for him to withdraw a lot of real time gets used up for these non-battles. I have the most recent patch. I don't recall this happening much when I was playing before.

Any thoghts are appreciated.

The AI gets additional influence at the beginning of the game. 12,000 man militia armies on the 3rd turn aren't that uncommon. It's the 40,000 man one you have to fear

As far as the AI attacking but not attacking are you playing tactical battles? If so I believe the AI assumes an automatic battle when it determines when and where to attack and then retreats when the tactical battle begins and it is totally outclassed. Be careful though, if it thinks it can win the tactical battle you might be in for the fight of your life. You won't have enough shots to repel the militia horde. I've had many tight battles for Boston where it was nothing but bayonets for the last 5 turns.

Yep, I like playing out the tactical battles, it is the charm of FL.  I got frustrated with the attacks that were only witdrawals eating up so much time so I decided to have a go at attacking the computer and driving Alfred from Boston.  Wow, Alfred's army was huge.  Used up all my ammo, went to the bayonette, drove hordes from the field, and masses of Rebels kept ariving.  I finally withdrew to avoid a useless meat grinder.

It left me thinking, it would be awfully smart of Alfred to press one or more of those massed wave attacks home.  The malitia are going home ultimately either way.  So, why not grind down some of those experienced Royal regulars that are so slow and hard to replace.

So, where can I find a historical game for the American Revolution, since this one seems to simulate a fantasy scenario where the Americans had massive armies much bigger than what they really had?
