In they go tomorrow will be the big day

A question for you all

Pauk sent me the email below on Hellcats

"regarding Hellcats on CVEs... just think about them like i think for Jacks and Georges on CVs..."

I responded

"Hmmm very different situation there the Hellcats could and did operate off of CVE's numerous times during the war this occurred (several of the smaller CVE's actually had pure Hellcat Groups in the Pacific) - Wildcats were preferred because they were slightly smaller so more could be crammed in for CAS and had a better ASW profile (also politically the GM factory was producing thousands of them so they had to be used.

But there was no technical problem with Hellcats operating off of CVE's - the deck was long enough it was a CHOICE because air superiority was secondary mission.

Also by late 44 Marine Corps Corsairs were operating off of CVE's and they require more deck space to launch.

Jacks Georges etc were LBA no folding wings, no arrestor hook they were never used off of carriers they were land based fighters pure and simple.

So with respect you are comparing apples and pears.

Its slightly irrelevant anyway as I have chosen to keep a sizable proportion of my total carrier strength in Wildcats (ironically because of a shortage of hellcats and prevalence of Wildcats...I could have had every carrier operating Hellcats - just but I would have had no pool depth so it would have been a bad trade)"

Just to be clear this is NOT an argument its not a problem or an issue its just an interesting debate.

Having sent my email to Pauk I suddenly realised I was not 100% on my facts....oops !!!

Anyone know if my response is in fact correct ? More of an interest thing rather than anything important

Andy

Agreed.

Fact is F6F did operate off CVE's and N1K1 and J2M3 did not operate off CV's.

I think the issue just became moot anyway I lost another 100 Hellcats today

My MSW's were in TF's covered by BB's but it didnt seem to help.

MSW's and AK's took a real beating.

I tried a bluff against Pauk told him I am not worried about my Hellcat losses that my CVR's will replace them all....

Obviously I am fibbing for all I am worth *shhhhhhh* loose lips sink the allied fleet....

Hellcats just cannot cope with PDU Japanese fighters with pilots trained via ground attack....

Thats the hellcat pool empty and the USN pilot pool gone

Pauks out so no turn today ;(

My frighter losses look heavy I have to assess whether I need to pull may fleet back into Hellcat tranfer range of Wake to replenish. (3 hexes)

I also now need Tico and Bennington plus Hornet to help out so having got the bulk of the combat power ashore pulling back slightly may well be the better part of valour.

My assault troops need to rest before attacking anyway

As long as he has air superiority he's going to be air transporting troops in isn't he? Seems like your best bet is to gut it out and try to disrupt his air transport until you can start the ground assault. Or do you have a house rule against that?

Disrupting air transport requires fighters ;(

I lost over 140 Hellcats last turn  leaviing only 80 in the whole fleet....

Yes that correct pauk has destroyed my carrier air.

I have concentrated the remnants into 1 carrier TF and ordered the other 2 TF's to pull back to Wake.

NOTE for all allied players if you are playing PDU DO NOT EVER agree to a HR in anyway restricting the use of marines or corsairs in carriers after 1/44. Seriously Hellcats WILL lose 1:1 against the best LB Jap Fighters and thats fatal for allied attacking attempts - In two games (against admittedly highly competent Japanese opponents) the same situation has arisen Hellcat pool empty/ Naval Pilot pool empty.

Against PZB I could just about cope because most of his fighters were A6 series or Oscar 2's against pauk every fighter is at a minimum Tojo/Tony or Jack and USN Carrier Air cannot cope. (This is not about KB its about LBA and PDU).

I have agreed to a HR on this subject and I now bitterly regret it don't make my mistake. (ps I have no intention of renegotiating as that would be monstrously unfair to Pauk this is merely a tip for future negotiations in other games)

This is why I will never ever play *PDU on* again. I think I and all other allied players owe you a debt of gratitude for proving just how biased *PDU on* is to game play. It effectively neuters allied fighter air (because we cannot tweak our production all to one or two fighters as Japan can) and makes the game almost unplayable from the allied point of view.

Your grief has not gone to waist, small consolation I know, but at least it has served a purpose.

Jim

Thanks Jim I cannot believe I was stupid enough to restrict fighters on CVE's to Wildcats and to agree not to use Marine Corsairs on Carriers its just a bad joke...

Not a lot to say as expected Pauks LBA hit me hard and KB will follow on tomorrow.

I lost over 200 (90 Hellcats and 120 Wildcats so 4 months pilot production gone in a day) Carrier based fighters today and 2 CVE's went down

Seriously dont make my mistake all you allied players if playing PDU ON HR's on Wildcats and Corsairs are definitly OFF.

p.s the superforts have failed to launch again - anyone want to take a bet that they will launch tomorrow right into the teeth of the Japanese CAP unescorted

I personally agree with you Andy.

I don't see how it's 'fair' that the Japanese player can build zillions of planes and train their pilots upto Sakai/Yeager's by bombing rice paddies.

I for one (in my recently started games and will do so for EVERY future game) allow Hellcats onto CVE's. I don't worry about Corsairs because I also have HR's against live training missions by either side (as in rice paddy bombing to get 90+ exp pioots). I only play and train by using the training missions and live combat missions.

It therefore allows it be more slightly more realistic

Yeah I am trying VERY hard not to let Pauk realise how annoyed I am its not his fault and he has played brilliantly - this is not a mechanics isse this is not him doing something wrong - its me being foolish about HR's so I will keep quiet and play on !!!!

I agree.

I know you've mentioned this already but I really do agree that moving forward in your future games you maybe have no HR's on Corsair use etc, maybe limit on-map training etc. I don't see the point in tieing one of your hands behind your back on purpose knowing that the other guy has 2 fists to fight you with diamond gloves attached!

No I wont seek to change HR's in mid battle that would be unfair - I will live with whatever comes next I have lost 7 months pilots and pretty much every Hellcat and deployed Wildcat I own.

Pauk is about to get a massive victory and not much I can do about it.

I ordered a shock attack at Tinian and with 6,500 AV all at less then 10 disruption in full supply and over 22 Armoured Regts supporting 17 Inf Divs (pretty much every allied combat formation in the Pacific)

If I dont get at least a 1 to 1 you will hear my howls on the other side of the planet - lvl 9 forts in a flat island anyone wnat to take a bet that I wont get 1 to 1 (in which case WITP is so screwed as to beyond belief)

Lets see what happens

Well I get 1:1 so I would have lost the bet but Pauk is shipping in troops so I am not hopefull...

I had 8 Fighters available between 20 Carriers..

Not really anything to say you can read the carnage below I have hudreds of ships and I cannot protect them if stinks.

What I dont understand I had 50 MSW's and DMS's with the fleet but they all were sank on day 1 by the CD Guns despite being in BB prottected TF's what did I do wrong why did my entire MSW force sink in a single night ?

Anyone know what I did wrong.

Well guys this may be the end Pauk is reinforcing fast and my Merchant marine is in tatters.

Allied Carriers are now back at Wake reloading with Hellcats/Wildcats anything I can find but it will take a while to repair them all the time my Merchant ships get annihalated.

Why all my MSW's got killed in the first wave I will never know.

I cannot even fight near Tinian and now Pauk is reinforcing.

I am depressed as I unloaded damn near every soldier in the US inventory onto Tinian and I now doubt the island will fall

I gave it my best shot this time.

A deception plan that kept KB out of the way.
A landing in overwhelming force. Properly balanced TF's,
A huge number of Carrier borne aircraft.

I did everything right I could not attack the Mrianas early by air because unescorted B29's get slaughtered but I think I achieved surprise.

Had I done something wrong I would be kicking myself but this was my best go at the job and if I lose then so be it

This operation had sama taste as I had in my Iwo Jima operation vs Erstad.

Those bombers are nasty and will damage a lot of transport shipping. ( I doubt you can provide cover for this)

Anyway.. now that you are committed here than commit yourself 110% and you will win in the end.

OK the good side of this mess

1. My LST's mostly got away.
2. My Carriers are in resaonable shape and got away (only 2 BB's sunk)
3. Not fighting in SWPAC shortens allied logistics so AK losses while painfull are not fatal.
4. I get more destroyers....
5. 2 Marine Divs are ashore I still have a chance at taking Tinian but its going to be a longer fight than I would like - I must get those forts down while I can.

What I dont understand I had 50 MSW's and DMS's with the fleet but they all were sank on day 1 by the CD Guns despite being in BB prottected TF's what did I do wrong why did my entire MSW force sink in a single night ?

Anyone know what I did wrong.

There's not much you can do against it (besides months-long port bombardments), see this thread (you've posted in it, so it's just a reminder):

I agree. If it's any consolation: I think Tinian will fall sooner or later. Pauk's carriers cannot stay around forever, and you are still able to push through more supplies and troops.

Keep the faith...

I was wrong on that thread my MSW's all got sank !!! Oh I am not disheartened after we get to the end of this battle I will be changing the HR's to allow allies use of Corsairs - I view it as no choice now. I will wait until this battle is finished as it is unfair on Pauk to do otherwise.

Tico and Bennington have arrived at Wake.

OK my carriers and most of my heavy ships managed to escape.

The main thing I need to do is not get ahead of myself.

I still have the edge on Tinian and I need to knock the forts down some more. They are at level 7 now so I need to knock them down again if I can get them to 3 or 4 then I canb probably bull through and take the base no matter what - I have a LOT of arty on the base.

48 Fighters agtainst 110 Superforts and I lose 32 B29's thats a tad heavy losses.

Ah well

I have exactly 1 Corps in Reserve 1st Aus Corps at Pearl has 4 Divisons they are not really ready at only 90/100 so about another 900 AV if my LST's get away then I will commit them on the next phase

Why don't you split and disperse your transport TFs to make his air strikes less effective against them?

You could leave your most damaged and thus slow ships together to keep it a 'juicy' target and give the faster ships a better chance to escape.

Edit2: You already answered when I added that line...

I did its a trade off. All the assault TF's were split into 1 ship TF's and running at full speed

Those AK's were unloading the remnants of the ground units and supply and so I was not willing to have each TF brave the CD units it was a call (a bad one) I also wanted a nice juicy target for the air to take the attention off of the LST's

Its not quite as bad as it seems 2 of the TF's were full of already crippled ships some would have sank anyway

What it comes down to is fighting in Cetpac is logistically possible with low numbers of AK's but the LST's are vital to myt future I need to save every LST I can.

Tico and Bennmington have 61 F6F's each.

24 F6F NF's are available at Wake.

Add to that 1 Sqn that my last CVR has retruned to full strength and that adds another 40 F6F's

Hornet has 21 F6F's and is 400 miles south of Wake. So next turn my fleet will have 180 Hellcats at Wake plus 24 NF's.

I have about 100 more Hellcats in the pool but these will take time to repair I also have plenty of Corsairs so the 2 Sqns of USN Corsairs will fill back up quickly.

In 3 days I will have 250 fighters with the fleet carriers I am tempted to move my carriers out to 6 hexes to cover the remaining retreating transports.

Can you survive another battle at 6 hexes? He blew through your last fighters in 2 turns. Any reason to believe you'll do better this time around?

Seems like at some point you may need to go back in, but until then keeping a naval fighter reserve is perhaps more important than saving some transports.
