Noob, The starting pitcher must pitch at least 5 full innings to "earn" the win. Relief pitchers may earn the victory if your team takes (and holds) the lead while they are considered the "active" pitcher (I don't know if they use the term "active" or something similar, but the point is the same). Let's say the game is tied going into the top of the 8th inning. Your starting pitcher Frank Fastball tossed the first 7 innings but he leaves the game with a tied score. He pitched more than 5 innings but your team didn't earn or take the lead. As you come into the top of the 8th inning, your relief pitcher, Joe Hurler, gets the call and retires the side. In the bottom of that inning your team takes a 1-run lead. Right now, Joe Hurler is the pitcher-on-record to earn the win. In the top of the 9th, Carl Closer gets the nod and sits the opponent's batters 1-2-3. The Results? Frank Fastball gets a no-decision. Joe Hurler gets the win. Carl Closer gets the save. It's all a matter of who is the pitcher-on-record when your team takes the lead. Of course, they need to hold that same lead in order for that pitcher to earn the win. In other words, in the example above, let's say Carl Closer blows the save and the other team ties up the game. You call Rick Reliever in to pitch the 10th and after he keeps the other team hitless, your team takes another lead. Assuming that lead stuck, it would be Rick Reliever who earns the win. He was the pitcher-on-record when your team took the lead. Finally, and this one's a bit fun. Same example above, but this time Carl Closer blows the save. In the top of the 9th, he allows the other team to tie the game. In the bottom of the ninth, you score the winning run. Everyone else gets a no-decision. Carl Closer gets both the Blown Save and the win. Ain't baseball just grand?
