Sunday, August 24. We begin a four game series with the Cardinals. It starts with a double header. Roster expansion has now been enabled. We now carry all 35 players on the major league roster. In game 1, Hugh Casey gets the start, facing lefty Ernie White. Reiser hits a bases-loaded RBI single in the 3rd. Williams singles, and 2 runs score. Ted gets his 100th RBI. Camilli walks, and the bases are loaded again. No outs. Musial hits a sac fly. 4-0. The Cards score two in the 4th. 4-2, Brooklyn. The Cards score 5 in the 5th, and take a 7-4 lead. Mize homers in the 6th, and it's 8-4. Brooklyn scores one in the bottom of the 6th. 8-5. Wittig takes the mound in the 7th. Sam Nahem relieves White. Mize homers in the 8th. 9-5. Wittig loads the bases, and walks in two runs. 11-5. Earl Johnson comes in to the 3rd out. 11-5 is the final. White wins, and Nahem earns a save. Casey loses. Game 2. Heintzelman vs Curt Davis. Ted Williams sits this one out, and Wasdell plays LF. St. Louis scores first, on a sac fly by Davis in the 3rd. 1-0. The Cards get three runs in the 4th. 4-0. Mickey Owen hits a 2-out 2-RBI single. 4-2. Gustine hits a solo HR in the 5th, and it's 4-3. 8th Inning. Two new pitchers now -- Howie Krist for the Cards, Earl Johnson for the Dodgers. Johnson gives up a run. 5-3, Cardinals. Davis gets the win, and Krist earns the save. Heintzelman takes the loss. In Boston, the Braves hand the Pirates a 2-1 defeat. Pittsburgh now holds a 2.5 game lead over Brooklyn. In the AL, the Tigers lead the Yankees by 3 games. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Monday, August 25. 85 degrees at Ebbets, with the wind blowing OUT to CF@20mph. Niggeling vs Max Lanier. Kurowski hits a 3-run HR in the 1st. Reiser answers with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the inning. Runners reach the corners, and Owen hits an RBI single. 4-3, Dodgers, no outs. Musial grounds out, and Sturm scores. 5-3. St. Louis scores in the 2nd, and it's 5-4. Gustine singles, and steals second. Lavagetto homers, and it's 7-4. 3rd Inning. Kurowski hits another HR, and it's 7-5. Reiser gets an RBI single in the 4th. 8-5. Reiser steals second. Williams singles and it's 9-5. 5th Inning. Gus Mancuso hits the 5th homer of the game, a 2-run shot that makes it 9-7. In the bottom of the 5th, Musial singles, and Cox drives him home with a double. 10-7. Mort Cooper relieves Lanier in the 6th. The Dodgers score another run. 11-7. 8th Inning. Fitzsimmons relieves Niggeling. He loads the bases, and walks in a run. 11-8. No more. Higbe replaces him. 2 more runs score, but Musial throws out the tying run at the plate. 11-10. Unbelievable. Bottom of the 8th. Krist on the mound for the Cards. Reiser walks. Williams walks. Sturm doubles, and Reiser scores! 12-10. Owen singles, and Williams scores! 13-10. Runners on the corners, no outs. Musial is called for the hit and run. Sturm scores, and it's 14-10. 1out, with Owen on second. Krist exits, and Gumbert relieves. Top of the 9th. Harry Walker hits a pinch-hit 2-run homer off of Higbe. 14-12. Higbe holds on to earn the save. Niggeling wins, and Lanier loses. What a game! In Boston, the Braves hand the Pirates their fourth straight loss. We are now one and a half behind Pittsburgh. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tuesday, August 26. Dizzy Trout starts on short rest. No choice. He faces Lon Warneke. It has cooled to 74 degrees, with the wind being a minimal factor. Brooklyn scores first, with a sac fly by Williams in the bottom of the 1st. That's Ted's 102nd RBI. 1-0. Reiser hits a solo HR in the 3rd. 2-0, Dodgers. Riggs delivers with an RBI single in the 5th. Owen follows with an RBI on the hit & run. 4-0. Mize spoils the shutout with an RBI single in the 6th. 4-1. Marion singles, and two more runs come in. 4-3. Ira Hutchinson relieves Warneke with 2 on and 2 out. Bottom of the 7th. Gumbert takes over for the Cards. Gustine hits a 2-out RBI single. 5-3. Trout (13-6, 3.52) toughs it out and gets the CG win. Warneke takes the loss. In Boston, the Braves squeak by the Pirates 6-5. The Dodgers are within a half-game of the reeling Bucs.
