Try Downfall by Robert Frank. A lot of my late war strategy was inspired by this book. If we ever get together for a beer I will lend you my copy.

Could it be Max Hastings' Nemesis? Covers 1944-5 but it's not so much a straight end-to-end history as a series of 'modules' covering various aspects of the war.

don't know about a new title, but Caputo's "The Pacific War" remains a very good theater wide coverage book.

Did you mean Costello's TPW? Excellent book -high-level and descends to detail at just the right times.

Yes, thats the one. He gets grief from nitpickers where he transposes or mis-spells a Japanese ship name or two but that does'nt detract from the overall excellence of the work. I think the best written, most interesting section was the pre-history of the PacWar 41-45 where the complex relationship between Japan and the U.S. is examined and shown how it all helped lead to the coming conflict.

Haven't read Nemesis myself, but I have seen some lengthy reviews in the newpapers which praised it highly. I enjoyed his book on Bomber Command.
