Greetings to everyone and especially to PzB, of course.

After about 5 weeks of reading, I have finally managed to catch up with this AAR (even though I have to admit that I only skimmed over the various air combat reports on the last 50 or so pages)
Beeing new here (1st post) I´m not sure if this is my place to say this, but while going through the AAR I couldn´t help but getting suspicious about the way this game is programmed.
Especially Japans inability to launch coordinated airstrikes from several bases, and airgroups failing to launch or launching only partial strikes while allies manage to get coordinated strikes where LBA and carriers combine to a single strike (not to mentions weather so bad over japanese bases, planes can´t launch, but allied bombers finding their target in said weather without problem)
I also remember PzBs problems in taking down forts in the India campaign while now I see allied ground forces reducing forts by 2 to 5 levels in a single attack?
Or look at the surface combat between a japanese cruiser squadron (1CA, 1 or 2 CL and several DDs, IIRC) and 3, *three* allied DDs. Sure, the allies have better radar and stuff, but c´mon, gimme a break!

I smell something fishy here!

Now, don´t get me wrong, I know that the Allies are supposed to win this war. But the stakes are allready in their favor with all the hardware they get from 43 on. And yes, carrier operations got a lot more efficient in the allied TFs after, perhaps mid-43, so coordinated strikes should be possible after that time.
I strongly doubt, however, that the japanese forgot all they had mastered at the start of the war (Coordinated multi carrier strikes, LBA Naval campaigns,...). Just because KB was lost at Midway in RL, doesn´t mean the organisation in itself was shot to hell (I have recently finished reading shattered sword and apparently, very little of the flying personnel was actually lost at midway). Without the KB, there wasn´t a large carrier fleet to launch big strikes from, but if Japan would have had several fleet carriers, there is no doubt they would have been able to do so, IMO.

IMO, if a japanese player playes exceedingly well, while his allied opponent playes unbelivable bad (like PzB (Japan) battling me (Allies) ), Japan should win!

Hm, this got much longer than intended. Sorry for the rant (damn, allready going somewhat off topic with my first post, I´ll promiss to do better )

Anyway, great work PzB!!! And thanks a lot for your trouble in writing this AAR and keeping us in the loop!

Wow RHoening. You definitely should not head this way

From my view WitP has definitely many flaws in the way it was programed - but as far as I can see, they apply to each side. Not at the same time though. Looks to me that you went quickly over Japanese bonuses in the first part of the war. Actually, real KB had hard time doing anything close to what the average player (not to mention PzB) have them doing in their AAR, you say it yourself.

For the forts thing, the number of engineers probably played some role too...
So let's not start whining about some side being "favorised". There's nothing like that, no plot in being, the game was done this way, with its flaws, but nothing like "let's give the Allies a hundred bonuses because we want them to win in the end".
Still some people may say the game was specially designed to prevent Fabertong from winning or PzB from launching big strikes, that's maybe a more realistic hypothesis ()

As I said, I don´t have a lot of experience and am only judging from what I read in this AAR, so I may be (probably am) totally wrong. But:

I am not talking about, say, Uber-Cap, as Japan gets this bonus in the early game too. Neither am I arguing the fact, that the allies have great difficulties getting off coordinated strikes in the early game (this is as it should be, as Japan was the master of multi-carrier-TFs in 42, whereas it took the US about 2 years of war to catch up).

However, re. the uncoordinated strikes. There is, to my (admittedly limited) knowledge, a cap in place; when a carrier TF gets above 250 ac, strikes will no longer be coordinated. If this is so, would it be absolutely impossible for this limit to be lower for japan in late war?
Beware! I am not saying this is the case, only saying this is something that could be implemented to hamper japan in late game and force the strikes to split up, as they were late in the war IRL due to the terrible inexperience of japanese pilots.
Would it be impossible for something similar to be implemented for japanese LBA?

If the consensus around here is, that I am a paranoid psycho, I´ll shut up

Ps: Today I learned that "WitP - The Admirals Edition" is anounced, 5 weeks *after* I bought WitP. This shows my good judgement

Welcome to the forum, RHoenig!

When reading a Japanese AAR, you only learn about the bugs that happen to the Japanese side. I suggest you also read the AARs of PzB's opponents (you can find the links in section IV. in this thread: http://www.matrixgames.com/forums/tm.asp?m=1274014). Then you'll see that they, too, have to deal with many "undocumented features". Believe me, it all evens out.

As one of those who spent some months on the other side of the war from PzB, there are a lot of quirks, outright bugs, and some bad design decisions in this game. But, as far as I could ever tell, they seemed to be fairly evenly spread between the two sides. I really don't see any reason to think that one side was favored. It is a game about WWII combat in the PTO. In the later stages of the war the Allies should be kicking Japans butt around.

@ Fishbed: Phew, I wasn´t aware of that. Now I can sleep better again

@ Nomad: I´m well aware that the Allies are supposed to kick Japans butt in 44/45. I was just wondering if there was something in the code, to make sure of this.

Well, the consesus seems to be, I am imagining this, so let us rest the case and go back to the war

Happy New Year Everyone

Been away for a week for Xmas and New Year.
When Andy was busy with AE of WitP I also got cured from my addiction!-)
So it has been busy to get started again, especially because of the last problems with the war in Manchuria.
Will try to do a few turns this week, hopefully it'll be a good feeling.

Been doing some Battles in Normandy pbem's playing Rommels plan, excellent stuff

Long time no turn; it has been very difficult to get started after the initial break.
Must admit that the monotonousness of 1945 together with a lack of house rules and bugs makes it hard to get on with things.
We will have to see how progress will be, at times it has been a relief not having to spend an hour moving shattered air units around the map every day.

Strategic situation briefing

There is not much to do but wait for the enemy to continue the advance; The Combined Fleet is a tiny shadow of its former self and still requires time in the repair yards before it is ready for another fleet engagement. The Yamato is repairing so sloooowly, 1-2 points per week in our largest port.

Harbin is about to be assaulted; we have 6000 AP and 9 forts, but this won't help as 50 Red Army units are massing at the gates.
After its fall Manchuria will be closed down due to the bug that prevents air missions in the theater.

In the Home Islands most non vital industry has been closed down and the upgrade of Shinden factories together with the strain of supplying outlying islands has reduced supply levels to a low level. Still, production and number of reserve ac is adequate.
The most important bases are now Formosa, the Okinawas and Iwo Jimas. The question is whether Andy will invade these or simply bypass them and land in Japan directly? No matter what he chooses, there will be a break as his shattered troops are rebuilt and reinforced in the Philippines. Our troops are still fighting in Bataan and souther parts of Luzon and there is a lot of mopping up left.

India is pretty much self sustained and we have relatively strong garrisons and an Air Force presence there.
Andy has to divert substantial naval and army resources to re-capture Karachi and Bombay.

Thanx Fish, you're still hangin' in! Ever considered starting a game of your own?

Still no a-bombs. Asked Andy whether this is intentional or another bug.
22 Red Army units moved into Harbin - another 28 including 22 that will come across the river to the
NW to go. Assume there will be a shock attack any day now.

Our 6k defensive AP's and 9 forts can't compete because the terrain isn't mountainous and because
the Red Army shock attack values will spike to 12-15k me thinks.

Been considering options for counter strikes, but resources are too limited and the range of our Shindens
too small. We have to wait and fight a defensive battle for now.

Adjusted assault value vas some 5600 - partly because of the river crossing from the NW.
Still, we got an adjusted defensive value of 9450!!

We lost 11000 casualties, a lot of support troops. The enemy suffered more than 26k casualties including 465
guns and 105 tanks and only achieved a 0-1 odds. Can we make a stand here and save Manchukuo?

Our attack west of Vladivostok drove back a Red Army Rifle Corps but is still stalled by the border fort which
resists 140-1 odds....

Yes, I think you will do well when you start your own pbem game Fish! Will you wait for Admirals Edition?

Thx Rob, I'll try to stay in there!-)

Andy tells me he still hasn't received any A-bombs. We may be in for another serious bug. Think this was something
that was first fixed in a later version of the game than the one this was started in. Not good, not good!

nice to see you back!

Andy is runing out of time, that is for sure, but ive noticed (in my game) that he not finished ground war doctrine in German schools. He should use a classic blitzkrieg doctrine and outflank you with his panzers.

Not sure I'll be able to take on another full campaign in WitP - takes too much time with
family and work obligations looming ahead :p) Perhaps it'll be my turn to become a stalker on these forums

Thx Pauk, pretty sure Andy will build up for one massive storm and release it within a couple of months.
Think he is doing brute force against Harbin - in a couple of days we'll know if it was a good idea or not.

Quiet outside of Manchukuo. I'm gathering men and material for the next big battles.
Almost 400 Shindens in the pools and even without Harbins 200 we produce 400. Can't see that
Harbin's production has been cut off despite of the enemy infestation though!?

Good news from Manchukuo; we eliminate the border fort and claim 4000 enemy casualties

Andy tells me that the Red Army doesnt have enough supplies to support 800k troops on rampage through
Manchukuo and he will withdraw his army from Harbin. Too bad, another early game version glitch.
