12 DDs and a pre-Dreadnaught BB are sailing to Seattle to complete repairs now that the yard there is empty. I had a Doh! moment. The first reinforcement convoy for Midway was never getting anywhere so I looked and found that the inclusion of 10 knot ships (now travelling at 9 knots due to sys damage) was making the convoy do only 1 hex a day. The convoy has split. The fast section can do 2/2 and will be escorted in by the CL Chicago sailing from Midway. The 4DDs in the PH yard are now undergoing their upgrade.

Hyuga only took two damage from that torpedo last turn apparently. The torpedo nets and anti-torpedo bulges obviously did their work well. In a previous 1926 game with Wolfie an 18inch torpedo from an aircraft operating from USS Langley was enough to sink a pre-Dreadnaught. The Japanese Dreadnaughts are obviously tough girls.

Here is the situation in the PI. A minor miracle occurred this turn - Huron is now 99/69. I have formed tfs with most ships that can move to prevent them being scuttled if Manila falls too easily.

This is the situation in China. The US RCT has gone. I can only assume that the three retreats was too much for it and it disintegrated. I am rushing to try to reinforce Mukden as he has taken up the challenge there. If I had been thinking straight I would have realised that it was obvious. I must keep two eyes on the game rather than think about the AAR while I should be thinking about strategy. I am enjoying this so far. I have not had the opportunity to play this game enough and apologise if any of my glaring errors make the more experienced players wince. Hopefully Mukden will hold long enough for me to reinforce. I am doing a lot of hoping!

Looking back at the above posts I realise I should have used my political points to change the Asiatic Fleet HQ to South West Pacific. I could have moved them to the new base being built at Canton, where a Naval HQ would have been useful. If Manila holds long enough I shall. Should this be my priority or would LCUs be better in the long term?

Huron is now at 99/72. With a speed of 0 she would never make HK so I will have to leave her at Manila and hope.

The crippled monitor Monadnock is being repaired at Singapore (It is not safe to send her any further!). The two damaged DDs that escorted her are on their way to Bombay and Diamond Harbour. The AE from Shanghai has rounded the point at Takao and will run for Canton. The three DDs escorting her will refuel at Canton and then go back to Shanghai. The AS at Manila will be sent to Canton next turn and the US Far East subs will then be based there.

The corps rushing to Mukden has split. One brigade will head East to cover an encircling move, the other two are heading for Mukden.

The three Chinese CLs fit for duty are on their way to bombard the Amami Group. Hopefully this will be a nice surprsie for Dixie.

4 more DDs have completed their ASW refits and are cruising from LA to PH. The Destroyer Minelayer USS Ingraham was recommissioned at PH and will sail to mine Johnston Island before joining the mining tf returning from Midway before returning to Mare Island to reload mines (PH is not yet big enough). Replacements for L Flight, the US Marine Fighter unit on Guam, have arrived at PH. They will stay there and train until the situation at Guam stabilizes. If Guam falls they will be sent to Mare Island to provide local defence until the rest of the unit can be reconstituted. 3 H Class coastal submarines were held back at PH from the second wave to allow staggered patrols of Johnston Island and other areas.

Here is the current sunk ships list. It is nice to see a 21 inch warhead finally be enough to sink something bigger than a DD. RIP Kuma!

In the PI we await Dixie's next move while supplies are rushed to Manila. The appearance of a Jap sub off Bataan is a new development (see CR). None of the Manila based DDs are equipped for ASW and the two DMs retreated to Singapore long ago. They are too precious to risk fighting subs in this game - it's a dangerous business.

Edit: I forgot to mention that the French Cruiser Squadron is disbanded in Singapore and that USS Huron is now 99/65.

There are two ships in the reinforcement queue due to arrive at Manila. I do not hold out much hope of lasting the necessary 44 days!

China was quiet for once (apart from the sound of shovels and picks). The nuclear bombardment of Swatow was propaganda. All the units are still present, but rather usefully one of the local Warlords was killed. These are the devices that Tanker used to fix certain units in place. I have switched off replacements in the hope that the other in that unit will get killed so I have another mobile Corps. I will monitor the supply situation and may switch off replacements for other fixed units to make sure the replacements go to my fighting units. I should probably have done so already.

Here is the current state of Hong Kong's defences. A tank unit and an artillery unit are on the way, as are more supplies. 2 RN subs laid more defensive minefields last turn and are on their way back to Singapore to reload. L Class and K Class subs are on patrol offshore. I cannot think why the US Navy asked the Chinese for Canton as their new base...

Reinforcements are off to Dutch Harbor to secure the Northern flank. It's a side show I know, but I want Dixie to get a bloody nose if he is looking for a distraction up there. Big ports are handy because damage control is pretty poor in this game. As soon as they repair the Virginia Class pre-Dreadnoughts will head to Dutch Harbor to relieve the two big armoured cruisers, which will then join the US Pacific Fleet.

All the odds and sods will go to Canton Island to form a South Pacific Squadron. Another S boat arrived at PH this turn and sailed for Kwajalein. USS Ingraham will lay her eggs at PH instead of Johnston because the minelaying tf returning from Midway to refuel was closer that I thought. When PH eventually gets big enough to supply mines it will save a lot of time!

The sub damaged at Takao will head for Canton. She should make it. It's a size 6 port and an AS is on the way, but once her flooding is stabilised I think she'll have to go somewhere else for repairs. USS Huron is now down to 99/54. If she does not sink and I can get her safely out of Manila she will have a long slow trip back to Mare Island to look forward to. I do not expect she will be ready to fight again for well over a year, probably two. The 3 China Station DDs will head for Singapore for ASW upgrades instead of back to Shanghai. ASW has suddenly become more important than being a nuisance. USS Monadnock will proceed to Soerabaya to make room in the dockyard. The three Chinese CLs that bombarded Amami are off to try the same trick at Pusan. If I can I want to force him to dilute his forces. Lots of guard ships equals lots of targets for my subs...

I have slowed the first supply ship for Guam to cruising speed to try to give my two subs a couple of turns alone with his covering force. I am hoping he'll withdraw and I can sneak in.

In China he has managed to sneak a road construction battalion around me. My units are still in supply so there is no immediate danger to them. As I cannot spare anything from the defence of Mukden I have had to pull the 1st Cavalry Corps away from Tsingtao to deal with the issue. I was thinking of just sending a brigade, but decided to send enough to make sure (if he does not reinforce the success). It does mean that there is only one corps covering Tsingtao and he has a Division there that could wreak havoc if it gets out. Damn the local Warlords!

3 more upgraded DDs left LA for PH. As the yard at LA is becoming clear 3 more were moved from San Diego to LA to complete their refits. USS Huron was at 99/54 again today.

I will have few ASW worries in the Far East in a couple of months (including sailing time before anybody questions my math). Whether there is anywhere for them to go is down to Martin...

In China Martin has more units heading for Mukden so it is going to get nasty there. The C brigade of the Chinese 3rd Division has had their orders changed (again!). They are on their way to reinforce the blocking force at Tsingtao.

This is some more Dixie art. This DD is part of an escort group trying to catch up with the tank unit on it's way to Hong Kong. The convoy will reach HK first. They have been chasing them all the way from Singapore and I have no idea why they have not caught up?

The shooting was shockingly bad and I am alarmed to see that at 22000 to 24000 yards a 14 inch shell will not penetrate the deck armour of a Japanese Light Cruiser. The only penetrating hits were to DDs. I will post damage details as I play the turn.

I am just posting a screenie of the opposing fleets, because it looked exciting at that point...

2 more DDs are on the way from LA to PH at cruise speed. 9 more are moving from San Diego to LA to complete repairs. A minelaying task force comprising the Cruiser/Minelayer Balitimore and 3 DMs reloaded at Mare Island and are heading to thicken the defensive fields at Midway.

At Midway very little damage (none I could see) by the skirmish off Midway. Some BBs are low on ammunition for their rear mounts. A more skillful and aggressive commander has been appointed and the Battle Fleet has orders to patrol offshore. Dixie's force is still present. I am hoping he will not move East, but have redirected the approaching reinforcement convoy South, just in case. A night battle would really suit Dixie as my crews' night experience levels are only around the 25 mark. I will not pursue Dixie if he runs West and will not think about hitting Wake Island with a surface sweep until the Pacific Fleet have completed their primary task of protecting Midway while reinforcements arrive. More subs have arrived at PH. Half are on their way to Midway and Wake.

Dixie's force at Guam is no longer offshore so I have given the approaching supply tf (single ship, 2500 tons only) orders to increase speed to maximum. I hope what is happening at Midway will cause Dixie to forget about Guam for a bit. I am tempted to load the Marine Fighter Squadron and take them to Canton or Shanghai. The segment at PH would have to be sent to the same destination in a supply convoy.

In the PI he is moving on Bataan first. I have sent the Rochester tf to bombard his forces there overnight. If he gets artillery into Bataan my ships will have a tough time getting in and out so it might be time to think about leaving...

USS Huron's floatation damage jumped up to 70 again. I have a horrible feeling that she is going to have to be scuttled unless she stabilises enough for me to move her. If she drops to around 50 again I'll risk moving her before she has to run a gauntlet at Bataan.

In China the situation is getting worse. SS S-17 is half way to Canton and is now 36/57.

The force facing me at Mukden is the same as last turn but the 2 large units that were south of Mukden last turn have disappeared. I suspect that he is moving them to Chifeng to cut my forces off from the rest of China. I need to preserve my small mobile force so I have ordered all my units in Northern China to abandon their positions and make for Chifeng. Dixie can have the points for the cities. Production is not on in this game so trying to deny him the resources at the expense of my dwindling forces would serve no purpose...

2 DDs finished repairs at Mare Island and sailed to catch up with the Dutch Harbor convoy. They will stay at Dutch Harbor to support the Virginia Class pre-Dreadnoughts when they arrive. The Jap squadron has retreated from Midway, hopefully not to the East after my approaching convoys.

The fall of Bataan cause big problems. Huron is at 99/60. She will have to spend the day off Bataan if she runs, but I fear I will soon have to risk it. The MSWs are heading to Canton. One group of PGs will stay off Bataan, but the rest of the Naval forces will move to San Marcelino to cover the embarkation of the 103rd USAAS base force which retreated from Bataan. Transports will hopefully arrive in two days, but if Martin moves into the hex I may use the DDs and Rochester as fast transports. The huge number of troops he has committed will surely spell the end of Manila sooner rather than later.

The British First Tank Regiment has arrived at Hong Kong, bringing a welcome boost in assault points. The Chinese CLs returning from their raid of Pusan have diverted to Wenchow as there is a Japanese task force offshore at Shanghai. I wonder what Dixie is up to? The forces attempting to retreat from Mukden had their orders reset by a Jap bombardment. I have given them an interim objective to see if they fare better this turn (if they are not forced to retreat!), but I think I will probaly have to give them orders for the nearest Chinese base to get them clear before the trap shuts. Two precious days wasted...
