Today's summary is on the Iwo Jima area. Despite it holding over 200 x P51D (along with B25's to keep Bonin surpressed and Recon) it also houses 13 x Divisions and 3 x RCT

So glad to see that you could give each man 2 square feet to live in there...oh, wait....we need the space for the planes and the support troops.....so, I guess you must have tunnelled under Suribachi, put in stairs and they are living in the center of the Earth with the Troglodytes.............(editor's note; this is coming from one that has 8 Divisions on Truk atoll, which at least has 38 sq. mi. of dry land area....though one could think that most of the troops spend most of their time on the 150+ transports in the lagoon....but 38 is better than 7.5 sq. mi.)...
Just pulling the chain a bit here Speed......glad to see that your war is coming to a successful completion in the near future; well done.
Now back to the AAR.

Hi all,

Hi tabpub - I agree. 2 SqFt per man is very generous of me. Grateful they should be yes This is actually a weird feeling. After so many turns and e-mail exchanges it's a little sad this is coming to an end. We've already agreed to an AE re-match though

-----------------

Today was a day of minor frustration. Despite sinking DD Murakumo and an AK at Batavia my P51D's failed to fly from Iwo Jima. As such my 419 x B29's flew un-escorted and lost 25 of them to 55 x Japanese CAP. My men will rest tomorrow as my P51D's hopefully sweep the skies.

Kiungahan is clear of Japanese now after over 10000 were wiped out today!

------------------

Today's summary is from the Southern SRA. Here you can see which areas were isolated and bypassed. I saw no point in going for Java/Sumatra since they yielded few VP's and didn't lead towards Japan.

My routeway here led from Timor (Faber fought here and CVL Ryujo was lost and CV Kaga damaged). We also had some intense surface battles around little known places like Raba and Maumere. No capital ships were lost here but several (50ish) smaller craft DD/MSW/PC/AK/AP/LST were along with heavy damage to most of the RN BB fleet.

Banjarmasin was a big operation and involved the deepest strike into enemy held SRA territory. 3 x CVE were lost to Kamikazi's but after Banjarmasin was secured I always had LBA to help my advance up the west coast of Borneo and then round to the north. BB Kirishima succumbed to damage sustained whilst fighting BB Royal Sovereign at Kuching. In return Royal Sovereign had 62 SYS damage.

Faber held strong at Balikpapan for 9 months until recently weakening and falling back.

Places like Bali, Balikpapan, Batavia and Palembang are bombed almost daily to keep the Japanese surpressed.

I have 1000 AV at Samarinda and 1300 AV at Jesselton.

In this screenshot I have nigh on 1500 planes on the various bases in this screenshot.

Hey Speedy, you don't actually perform close escort for the Superforts, right? It's Mustang fighter sweeps all the way, correct?

That's a reasonable strategy -- IF -- you can block the sea lanes leading to the oil bases. Especially Palembang.

Which I have. There is NO way anything could get through. I would say I have approximately 10-12 x PBY groups covering the 2 possible ways in - south of Borneo and north of Borneo. The moment anything is spotted it would have between 50-400 planes ready to attack it next day.

Hi all,

Firstly, could everyone applaud T for his perception?

----------------

Today's main event and probably some of the last extensive combat between Japanese and Allied forces took place over the skies of Maizuru as P51D's and their Japanese counterparts fought for control of the skies before the B29's return:

Day Air attack on Maizuru , at 62,41

Japanese aircraft
N1K1-J George x 29
J2M Jack x 3
A6M5c Zeke x 23
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 15
Ki-61 KAIc Tony x 17
Ki-84-Ic Frank x 25
Ki-100 Tony x 13
Ki-102a Randy x 41

Allied aircraft
F-5C Lightning x 1
P-51D Mustang x 134

Japanese aircraft losses
N1K1-J George: 24 destroyed
J2M Jack: 3 destroyed
A6M5c Zeke: 20 destroyed
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 15 destroyed
Ki-61 KAIc Tony: 17 destroyed
Ki-84-Ic Frank: 23 destroyed
Ki-100 Tony: 13 destroyed
Ki-102a Randy: 34 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
P-51D Mustang: 18 destroyed, 11 damaged

PC Amakasa also sank today in Palau port after the 2 bombs it took from A26B's before

------------------

Today's summary is of the Malaya/Indo China region. Compared to the long and drawn out campaign for Burma and Siam (which took 1.5 years) both Malaya and Indo China fell quickly to the Allies as there were no easily defensible bottlenecks for the Japanese. Indo Chinma was a walk in the park and fell within a month.

Malay took longer as the Japanese made a final stand at Singapore. After 2 months of bitter fighting Malaya was secure and 60000 Japanese were lost forever.

I have 3800 AV at Singapore (was to be used for the invasion of Formosa), 2500 AV at Saigon (was to be used for either invasion of Nanning (China) or also Formosa). Hanoi has the Allies and Japanese at stalemate with 4500 AV Allies against 4000 AV Japanese.

Hainan was a nice little conquest for the Allies over 1 month which cost me c.200 planes, 30 Auxilliary ships and 3000 soldiers. In comparison the Japanese lost c.900 planes and 40000 men.

Yes. If I needed the VP's and the game still had 3-4 months left to run then yes. I have my BB/CV/CVE at Camranh Bay ready to rock and roll for it as well.

Msutangs could've provided LRCAP to west Formosa.............

P.S. My troops at Singapore and Saigon are 85-90% ready to go for Formosa if they were needed.

In my current AI test game, I'm going Kwajalein -> Saipan/Guam/Tinian -> Formosa. The South Pacific is a purely secondary theatre and the Philippines aren't going to be touched, aside from by subs and air. I'll take Iwo Jima as well, for P-51 bases.

Agree T. Especially against numerous LCU's (Japan has many of them) and behind level 9 forts in pointless bases (those which have no strategic/tactical benefit) its silly to waste effort on them.

Iwo Jima is KEY. I've heard many a time before that the Mariana's are key. They are important BUT in stock it's Iwo that is key IMO since without Iwo your B29's will have to fly either at night or unescorted during the day against Japan = they will achieve little at night and get slaughtered against Japanese air during the day.

Speedy,

Very nice summaries.  I think you should mention the existence of summaries in the description provided under the "stickied" AARs.

I suspect you will restart your AE rematch with the penguin from the mid 1942 campaign, however if at all possible, personally I would prefer to see a December 1941 start.  Even if limited to only an 8 December start, the penguin's chances of winning (and consequently providing an even greater challenge) are, IMHO, far better than a mid 1942 start.  Against a good Axis player, a December 1941 start severely tests an Allied player's patience and defensive capabilities.

Hi all,

Hi Alfred - Aye. I think we probably will end up playing a full campaign in AE

---------------------

Other than the sinking of an AK and AP at Batavia the SRA was quiet apart from the daily Allied raids on enemy airfields and troop positions.

P51D's again tangled with the enemy over Maizuru. I lost 34 planes in the day versus 134 Japanese. I need 2K more VP's to get 2:1 now.

----------------------

Todays summary comes from The Phillipines. This has been a 'backwater' for the past 4 months now. My plans for here were to mainly remove the Japanese as an aerial threat from Luzon and Mindanao. I enabled this by using the air control of Jesselton to project a Para assault on both San Jose and Bacolod west of Luzon. An air bridge was established and once fighter cover was provided the bases built up. Now they house mediums and FB's that have raked PI virtually clear of enemy planes (except patrol).

Approximately 25 enemy units are based on Luzon alone. A self made prison camp

Hi all,

Firstly, i've been meaning to mention this a few times before. When you receive the A26B Invader USE it. It is a fantastic medium. The best in game IMO. It has a good range (8 hexes extended), good bombload (8 x 500LB IIRC) and is quick.

---------------------

The last Japanese ship at Hong Long was sunk today - MLE Toa Maru #2.

I'm going for the first raid on Formosa tomorrow. P51D's swill sweep Takao from Kiugahan. B29's will hopefully follow up from Rangoon to pound the airfields.

PB4Y's struck out at Rabaul from Lunga for the first time with P51D escort. 32 enemy planes wrere torched on the ground.

Tomorrow Saipan's B29's will go for Tokyo again.

----------------------

Todays summary looks at the submarine war and the results of it. I won't go into details about how I conduct the war since it's been mentioned about 3 times before in this AAR. If you have any specific queries on it though please ask away

Hi all,

As the war winds down the focus shifts to a few localised but tightly contested areas - namely airsapce over Formosa and Japan.

The past 2 days have seen the Japanese sustain over 240 plane losses against 70 Allied. Virtually all of the Japanese losses have been combat orientated whereas approximately 35 of the Allied were Operational losses.

A B29 raid on Tokyo damaged more HI plants netting 400 more Strategic points. Tomorrow the B29's go for Maizuru again.

I need approximately 1600 more VP's for a victory now.

Below is a screenshot of the most commonly used planes. No real surprise to see the B29, Corsair and P51D up there. As you can see the constant pace of combat leaves these 3 key plane pools virtually empty (Corsair pool has dropped massiely due to the addition of FBG's on Fleet Carriers).

I can't quite decide what plane I'm looking the most forward to getting: the A-26, the B-29 or the P-51D... Oh wait, I'm getting all three!

You've certainly got a nice reserve of Liberators in their various incarnations. Any bases near Formosa where they could be used?

Hi all,

Hi Capt. I sure could do - Kiungahan, San Jose etc could all reach but I have little need to now. It's weird playing the war knowing it's all but over. I am really tempted to just go for a large CV incursion for the sake of it.

What do you think?

I want a poll from people. Do you think I should venture towards Shanghai with my CV's?

------------------------

The last 3 days have seen the usual with further losses over Japan and further destruction of Japanese industry. Kanazawa is a smoking ruin. 500 VP's until victory.

Go for it, Speedy.  Might be interesting, but then it'll probably be more of the usual penguin beating.

Are you guys going to stop when you reach the auto-victory?
