Dave Turner and I made the trip to Ft. Knox yesterday for the Combined Arms Live Fire Exercise and it was VERY impressive. It's free to the public and will be held again on the 16th and 30th of July. Just show up at 9:00 AM Eastern Time and get a ticket. They are limited so try to be there early.
We saw M1A2's, M3A2 Bradleys, M270 MLRS's, AH-64 Apaches, M109A6's and much more put through their paces. There's a firepower demonstration first and then a Troop of the 1/16th Cavalry put on a Scenario against an attacking Bn of tanks and BMP's.
All the weapon fire is impressive and most of it occurs about 25 meters to your front firing at a ridge about 1500 meters out. The M109A6 was a show in itself, I'd never considered that I could see the shell arcing through the air and 155HE is VERY impressive! The "mad minute" at the end is, by itself, worth the trip. Then it's over to the Patton Museum (on the post) for WWII tanks up to T-72's and the XM1.
