First let me say that I love the hole concept of SPW@W, and that you guys have come a long way since SP1. With that said, let me state that the actual gameplay leaves alot to be desired. What is the deal with the "invincible" infantry squad? I don't know how many times I've cornered a Russian unit (in cover) who I've pounded with everything but the kitchen sink, and they come out of it with barely a scratch. I used 3 Tigers, 2 Stu's, 3 Brumbars, 4 Halftracks and an engineer squad firing at less than 150 yards with everything they had, and only the engineer squad caused a casualty. Then I tried to rush them with my 4th Tiger, which they somehow found time from taking cover to promptly come up and destroy it. Doesn't the enemy suffer from suppression? In another scenario I performes a similar test by hammering at a Russian squad in a forest with several heavy tanks, then rushed them with 7 different vehicles (got within one hex), which they destroyed one after another. All of this happened in one turn!! You tell me of one infantry squad in the war that was capable of destroying 7 tanks in 3 minutes and I'll buy your comany! In addition, I can understand a sniper's ability to attack with near anonymity, but a bunker firing 4-5 salvos per turn and still remain undetected until someone gets within 50 yards? The game has been frustrating to say the least. One of the major tactics of any military outfit has been the "shoot and scoot", which is non-existant in this game due to the fantastical resilency of infantry units to shrapnel. Hmmmm.... . Is the source code available for those of us who want to make our own improvements?

Just curious, but WHAT version are you playing, and did you delete the pref file before playing after upgrading?? I have not seen any of this behaviour in the 6.1 version!!!! I think it is about as near to perfect now, that it will get, with the limitations of the game engine.

 I agree with Warhorse on this. I think this game has come along way since the original SP and then some. I'm sure we may all have our special little things we would want, but this game I don't think can be beat!! I have a friend who has bought almost every computer war game there is, and he still says SPWAW is the best. Plus until now its all been for FREE. I feel if you want any more realism, go see your recruiter and enlist!! Semper Fi Randy

I'm playing the long campaign (again) There's a hill with (suspected) presence of enemy. I softened p with 75mm artillery for some turns. Meanwhile, a combined arms team (engineers, motorized infantry and tanks) close up for the attack. Yes! There's entrenched infantry with ATRs and HMGs. They start shooting at my vehicles. I fire HE with the tanks while I dismount the infatry. I go position by position oding the following: 4 tanks (Pz 38, small 3.7 cm gun + 2 MGs) fire on one position while another tank gets close. Recon patrols travel on top and beside some tanks to provide more and better "eyes and ears". When on range, the last tank enters the hex and does "Overrun" combat (Alt+O) . Result: unit destroyed/surrenders/runs away. Unless a unspotted units is ready beside the unit, no losses expected. If there's a unit bedide the overrun unit, the tank can get some supression. But I fear little after the artillery barrage. 4 Sdkf + 2 infantry units pinn down an hex. the other 2 infantry units get closer and closer until a range-zero fire makes the entrenched enemy unit to run away. The Engineers check for mines and use flamethrowers or Satchel charges with pinned infantry. I got few losses. Why? Artillery preparation, use of smoke, combined arms approach to the problem, I take my time (like wait so the tank is stopped and the % chance increases), 4:1 ratios to attack a single hex, SP:WaW v.6.1 Oh! yes! and fine infantry with intelligent leaders. Yes, I like to take the hill AND bring the boys back home. It's a long way to Tiperrary! It's a long way to go!

Sometimes gripes are legitimate, sometimes I think its a case of to much Real Time gaming. I like Steel Panthers, because you either do it right or get dead. I play some of my games, and when I dont do it by the book, and get slagged. No point in making whining noises when I didnt do it right. I have heard of enough historically real events where the incredible was actually accomplished. I never forget seeing Audie Murphy recreate his action during the Second World war. He shot up an entire attack while standing on a burning tank. Then there is Sargeant Alvin York (admittedly WW1), but he showed us what one sniper can really do in just a few minutes. These things really happened. Now if you run your units around the board like meaningless pixel people, you tend to forget that in real life its seen differently. In real life that tank will be inclined to worry over things you wont. A squad of men will respond to fire in strangely unpredictakle ways. I dont play real time games, because after watching them on friends computers, the units never think, they just do. Maybe I havent seen all the games out there, but what I have seen gives me precious little reason to give the RTS environment much interest. I for one am not questioning the accuracy of Steel Panthers yet. And thats after seeing my own units pound the daylights out of an enemy hex. Its not how many units you shoot, its whether they are hitting anything that counts. I have my message window set to XXX because I am not interested generally. If the first shot didnt get them the next might. Eventually you have to sit back, use the map, and think of the most logical approach and go with it. Its a game. It will never be the real thing. So just sit back and play.
