Sometimes gripes are legitimate, sometimes I think its a case of to much Real Time gaming.
I like Steel Panthers, because you either do it right or get dead.
I play some of my games, and when I dont do it by the book, and get slagged. No point in making whining noises when I didnt do it right.
I have heard of enough historically real events where the incredible was actually accomplished.
I never forget seeing Audie Murphy recreate his action during the Second World war. He shot up an entire attack while standing on a burning tank.
Then there is Sargeant Alvin York (admittedly WW1), but he showed us what one sniper can really do in just a few minutes.
These things really happened. Now if you run your units around the board like meaningless pixel people, you tend to forget that in real life its seen differently. In real life that tank will be inclined to worry over things you wont. A squad of men will respond to fire in strangely unpredictakle ways.
I dont play real time games, because after watching them on friends computers, the units never think, they just do. Maybe I havent seen all the games out there, but what I have seen gives me precious little reason to give the RTS environment much interest.
I for one am not questioning the accuracy of Steel Panthers yet. And thats after seeing my own units pound the daylights out of an enemy hex. Its not how many units you shoot, its whether they are hitting anything that counts.
I have my message window set to XXX because I am not interested generally. If the first shot didnt get them the next might. Eventually you have to sit back, use the map, and think of the most logical approach and go with it. Its a game. It will never be the real thing. So just sit back and play.
