It seems to me that one of the historical facts of the PTO is that the real Japanese did not know in advance that they were, in effect in WitP terms, basically "hardcoded" to quickly win in Malaya, Borneo and Indonesia. In contrast, in WitP, that outcome is such a GUARANTEED event that the Japanese players often (1) expand far beyond their historical conquest lines regardless of Allied efforts to oppose same, and (2) complain that the Allies don't leave enough units behind to be easily destroyed (and, thereby, run up the Japanese VP count); hence all the whimpering about Allied players choosing strategies of force conservation, strategic retirement to secure positions and consolidation in the early part of the war.

GUARANTEED?? Have you played against the jap AI recently??

No offence by the way - you made a very good point! I hope Andy and the rest of the team noted it.

It's also silly that no allied plane ever goes out of production.

Where as Japan I can't keep a stockpile of them without having a few squadrons of obsolete aircraft on the map. Too bad allied production isn't on map, but I'm sure that would be a PITA to implement correctly.

I dont assume anything is a given in terms of deployment.

If the allies get 18th Brit Div and the 2 Indian Bdes into Malaya and have a few days to rest and organise them before committing them to action
If Percival, Heath, Barstow and Murray Lyons are all replaced.
If the allies are not retreated but still manage to hold onto east Malaya AF's long enough to get reinforcements into Malaya without getting cut off and defeated in detail.
If the Japanese player tries to short change Malaya sending forces elsewhere

Lots of ifs buts and maybes

Depends on who the player is really. I'm more likely to overload the Malaya striking force to get it over with more quickly. I'm also known to drop Paras in places to cut of the retreat of the northern Malaya forces.

Lots of different ways to play that one out.

I think what he meant to say is that Allied SigInt is unchanged from stock.

That's a shame. Any potential for a future patch? (I think most of us admit Allied SigInt is woefully under-represented in Stock).

There is always potential....

EDIT - I don't know that the SigInit is woefuly underrepresented. What you are missing is the staff that can process it and present you with a synopsis that is "Actionable"

In one of the AAR's someone used Bodhi's utility to process the SigInt and determined the Japanese convoy routes in the game using the various transmissions detected and reports of ship locations...

I disagree there to an extent. Bodhi's utility is great but............It's impossible to get a detailed set of OOB info on Japanese operations, impossible to know that Shinano would be at x,x co-ordinates on this rough dates. Impossible to know that IJN will be near Midway between 4-6th June etc?

I wasn't aware that the crew of Archerfish knew where Shinano was going to be, did they? I thought the Archerfish just happened to in the right place at the right time. IIRC, they were supposed to be looking for B-29 pilots, but the raid was canceled releasing them for general anit-ship duty.

Also, while Allied sigint/code breaking did provide a lot of information throughout the war, it doesn't seem like we routinely had detailed OOB/schedule information. Midway and Coral Sea seem to me like the exceptions here instead of the rule, and in Midway's case, the sheer size of the operation would have made it hard to keep totally secret.

Most of the time, the information on Combined Fleet was closer to "they are working up to go somewhere" and other clues and our recent actions filled in the likely destinations.

Sorry... I just stumbled in from a discussion about sigint and its use and ab(?)use for feeding wrong information in another thread and have no idea what was discussed about allied sigint in this thread so far... still, I would like to make two comments and/or wishes:

a) I think it would be great if it would be possible to stop allied sigint from being written to file for the Japanese player.

b) I also think it would be good if random bits of (wrong) intel would appear as well. Not all intel one obtains is good, and this, too, should be mirrored.

Just my opinion.

Is this true? Does the Japanese player receive the allied SigInt report?

SigInt should be available ON THE MAP, not just on the sigint screen. ie. if you scroll over an enemy base on the map that you have some sigint for it should include that info on the screen.

I imagine an inscrupulous Japanese player can go into the save folder and pull it up if they wanted...but I don't know if that is possible in PBeM.

That's not the "XX Div is planning to attack YY location" or the "XX Base Force is located at ZZ location" SigInt that I am concerned about.

Also, the mouseover on my bases tells me everything I want to know, but it doesn't tell me that he knows any of this...

Yes, players receive BOTH sigint files. The Japanese one is about useless... it seldom provides any beneficial intel. As a Japanese player, I do make it a point to ignore the Allied sigint file. To me, looking at that file is tantamount to cheating. It would like reading an opponent's AAR without permission.

I would second a change to make the opposition report disappear.

Well, if it's in the folder but not accessible during the game, I trust my opponent. I'm sure that there are those out there unworthy of such trust, but maybe they'll end up playing each other...

Is it possible to get a clearer date than "summer" when AE will be available? I posted this a month ago and Andy Mac gave a detailed response on the hurdles that remained, but I'm hoping for an estimate of when the game will actually be available. Thanks.

I can update where we are and again Joe will correct me if I get it wrong and shoot me if I say something I shouldn't

Things have slowed down largely on AI grounds we are all struggling with it and it remains a monumental PITA. My respect for what the original WITP devvelopers achieved grows with leaps and bounds.

I have spent more time on AI stuff than anything else on this project and its still WIP

As far as I am aware all the new features are in and being debugged and its all about testing and AI now

We are still a fair way off and I can say no more at this stage

quote:

ORIGINAL: Andy Mac

Hmm I probably should wait for Joe to do it but I always was a tad impatient - I am sure Joe could give you all the rounded fuller version but here is my potted version.

Things are moving well - art is looking great new air ORBAT is in and looks fantastic, land and sea are both also almost done. We are tweaking a few bits and pieces but its coming together nicely

AI is a PITA and always will be - I have probably spent 90% of my time on AI for the last two months as has half the land team and some even more - really really getting to hate the AI work although its looking a lot better. (Did I mention how much I hate the AI )

Its doing a lot of things with some sense and is scriptable e.g. we are not quite up to having random scripts but if I had the time (and it will be exposed in the editor so someone else can) I could go through and create 4 or 5 different AI Scripts for each side post em on a site for the main scenario and let the player randomly select one to use with the AI following a different core strategy each time.

Getting one integrated AI up and running takes a lot of time but I am sure others will take up the challenge after you get your hands on the editor to do just that.

Scenarios not yet built (and no dont ask me about which scenarios are going to make the cut because I don't know)

All teams are working on tweaks from a land team perspective we just got an auto squad upgrade up and running so that as a squad type is returned to the pool it auto upgrades to the most current version - e.g. USMC 41 Squad when the player has sufficient 42 Squads to upgrade the 41 Squads that are returned to the pool automatically become 42 squads and can be used to upgrade the next unit. This allows mass conversion of squad type devices when an upgrade happens.

We also got Invasion scenarios in for both sides so invading places like India or NZ or the HI will have consequences.

Did a trawl through the leader database and added a few more Air Commodores and AVM's for HQ's

Convoys system is in for off map bases to allow varied supply levels by month and varied device availability

End dates for land device production so no more masses of obsolete equipment.

Basically lots of changes all still to be tested and may need to be disabled (Coders have done a superb job to get in the the final adjustments but we are pretty much all in testing or AI mode now)

So much to say so little time I hope the above helps you to see where we are driving at.

Andy

Thank's Andy.  We appreciate what real info we get.  Yeah, I want it now, but I'd rather have a finished product.  We await patiently {or mostly so} for AE.  I hope Matrix's servers can handle the load when it is finally released.

One thing. When a ship is spotted by a patrol plane the computer displays = PBY Catalina has spotted CV Zuikaku

Could it be changed to PBY has spotted Shokaku class CV

Could the ship ID be totally WRONG ?

For example AO Neosho was counted as a CV sunk by Japanese at Coral Sea..

Not only the wrong ship, but sometimes a ship that isn't there at all, at a place where it isn't, in a TF that doesn't exist. Foggy enough?

It's "interesting" to see a Royal Navy destroyer attack a Jap midget submarine in the Aleutians, when the nearest British vessel is several thousand miles away (and in another scenario)...

That's wonderful. It'll drive us nuts though. Will the real ship appear in the sunk ship list in 60 (or whatever) days?
