That's a great site by the way for pictures and line drawings of hard to find ships. I don't know who this Czech gentleman is who developed the site, but he's got a great site, hope he plays WITP!!!!

Just got caught back up. Nice news about the CVEs.  In the long run, the loss of all those DDs has got to hurt. Once you start getting the Fletcher's in numbers, he is going to pay. Placing a few Cleveland Class CL along with the Fletchers in a SC TF should give even the Japanese CA some pause.

thanks! But again it wasnīt much of an achievement of mine, it was more a (for me not understandable) fault of Hortlund as he knew that I have at least 48 4E bombers on Ceylon that attacked his shipping around Andaman Island a couple of times. So sending his helpless CVEs (5 Zeroes from Hosho were the only fighters in this TF) right next to Ceylon (6 hexes) is really careless and just asked for a punishment. In fact his CVEs were in range of my bombers already a couple of times, but they never launched, so perhaps he became a bit too confident. But nevertheless itīs great to see this threat being sunk as 54 Kates in the Indian Ocean caused some trouble in the past.

At the moment I use my Brooklyn and Cleveland class CLs as escorts for my CVs (donīt have that many CLs though) while my CAs are used as escorts also. If we are in need of a bombardment TF then this will also be a task for my CAs. All BBs that are faster than 21 knots are also escorting my CVs. Not because of their AA value but more as a torpedo and bomb magnet. If you have 2 CVs and 2 BBs in a TF then normally 35-45% of the bombers are going after the BBs (at least this is my experience).

If Hortlund uses CAs as convoy escorts (obviously very rarely) then I normally wonīt engage his TFs with surface raiders. I once did with two of my BBs at Kendari and paid for it with the loss of BB Resolution. So if there are BBs or CAs I will try to engage them with bombers or leave those TFs alone. All other TFs are in danger of being attacked by my small to medium sized surface combat TFs as seen in the past. IMO I did quite a good job with those surface TFs so far.

Just after the sinking of two enemy CVEs, we have a very bad turn... a lot of those smilies today...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 01/16/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Andaman Island at 23,34

Japanese Ships
CA Mogami
CA Kako, Shell hits 2, on fire
CL Kuma, Shell hits 3
DD Kisaragi
DD Uzuki, Shell hits 3, on fire

Allied Ships
CA Frobisher
CL Leander, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD Fletcher
DD Chevalier, Shell hits 1, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Like I mentioned last turn, we send a cruiser TF to Andaman Island and see an enemy cruiser TF reacting! Donīt know where it came from, we havenīt spotted them before, so this was an excellent move by our opponent. The battle shows an amazing fact. CL Leanders 6 inch shells did penetrate the IJN CA armor at 6000yards, while the 7,5 inch shells from CA Frobisher didnīt! What kind of crap is that ship? Not surprising, our torps miss while the enemy hits as usual. CL Kuma was hit by 3x5 inch shells from Fletcher that penetrated the CLīs armor. At this point we hoped to see no further encounter.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Night Time Surface Combat, near Andaman Island at 23,34

Japanese Ships
CA Mogami, Shell hits 1
CA Kako, Shell hits 1, on fire

Allied Ships
CA Frobisher, Shell hits 4, on fire
CL Leander, Shell hits 2, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Fletcher, Shell hits 1, on fire
DD Chevalier, on fire

But as usual, when the Japanese have superior forces we see more than one encounter. Again, our torps missed while the enemy torps hit. Also Frobisher is hit by 3x8 inch shells that penetrated the armor. After having our ships damaged, we knew they wouldnīt move a lot of hexes during the day...

suddenly the AA unit in this hex becomes a killer. We lose 7!! Hurricanes today... All in all, today we lose 12 aircraft for no enemy aircraft lost.

Day Air attack on TF at 21,33

Japanese aircraft
B5N Kate x 4

Japanese aircraft losses
B5N Kate: 1 damaged

Allied Ships
CL Leander, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:

our SC TF was split in single ship TFs after the battle during the night and ALL single ship TFs were spotted during the day! Those 4 Kates from Andaman of course sink Leander.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 20,32

Japanese aircraft

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty: 10 damaged

Allied Ships
CA Frobisher, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet

and of course we see the lonely CA Frobisher being attacked also from Betties on long range torp attack. In sinking condition, chance to survive 15%. On the other hand our 100+ 4Es did spot the enemy CA/DD/AK TF (some 12+ ships) 8 hexes from Cooktown but of course didnīt launch - like so many times before. Unfortunately our opponent seems not to face such problems. I was already amazed to see all 4 single ship TFs being spotted, not to talk about seeing both single cruisers being attacked.

Attacking force 42030 troops, 552 guns, 18 vehicles, Assault Value = 1514

Defending force 94618 troops, 933 guns, 21 vehicles, Assault Value = 1695

CL Leander was lost with all men after a night engagement at Andaman Island due to torp attacks of 4 enemy torpedo bombers.

HMS Leander (Light Cruiser, 1933-1949)

Later HMNZS Leander
HMS Leander, the 7289-ton (standard displacement) lead ship of a class of five light cruisers, was built at Devonport, England. Completed in March 1933, she served with the Royal Navy until April 1937, when she was transferred to New Zealand and became HMNZS Leander. The cruiser mainly served in the Pacific and Indian Ocean areas until 1940, then operated in the Mediterranean and Red Sea. On 29 October 1940 her embarked aircraft attacked a fish cannery at Mogadishu, Somalia, and on 27 February 1941 she encountered and sank the Italian auxiliary cruiser RAMB 1 near the Maldive Islands.

HMNZS Leander served in the East Indies and South Pacific in 1941-1943. While operating with a U.S. Navy task force she was torpedoed by Japanese ships during the 13 July 1943 Battle of Kolombangara. Though badly damaged, with 28 of her crew dead, she was able to leave the battle area under her own power. Temporary repairs in New Zealand during the remainder of 1943 were followed by a transit to the U.S. East Coast, where she received permanent repairs at the Boston Navy Yard, Charlestown, Massachusetts. This work continued from early 1944 until August 1945, by which time the Second World War was effectively at an end. Now back in the Royal Navy, HMS Leander steamed back to the United Kingdom in the fall of 1945. She was sold for scrapping in December 1949.

Grampus gets away North of the Philipines. I have sent two subs towards Japan and as soon as they were near the Philipines (on transit) one was hit by a Helen, the other one attacked also. I made no more comments about the bomber vs sub attacks but they still happen nearly daily with 3 subs hit in the last week. And no, they are far from Japan or the Philipines, but itīs enough to be within 8 hexes of any Japanese base.

A ASW killer group tries to engage one of my subs. CVE Hosho is still at Andaman Island and we also spotted an AR there. Andaman is port level 1 and Hortlund seems to not know that his AR only helps if disbanded in port. He would be better off trying to send Hosho to Rangoon IMO.

Daininunyo Maru is another example of how careless our opponent is with ships. This AP was already torpedoed South of Saigon and made it heavily damaged all the way to this hex South of Hong Kong. Would Hortlund care about his ships (is it that hard to look at the TF that was attacked by a sub? ) then he would have sent this small AP into the next level 5 port and it would have been probably no problem to save it as it canīt have been so heavily damaged when it made another 20 hexes.

Plays in our hands but thatīs almost like playing against the AI that doesnīt care about damaged ships either.

It doesnīt take many TKs lost to see it become a problem for the Japanese, especially in Nikmod with the reduced capacities. This TK is a big one with "only" 11.000 tons. As soon as the Japanese have lost 15-20 of those TKs it will already get severe.

SS Whale

WHOOOOHOOO! Whatīs going on? Looks like the phase when we saw 90% of our torps missing is suddenly over. Encouraged by the pityful performance of my subs Hortlund decided to send a TK TF unescorted into the area West of Borneo where a couple of my subs are raiding the shipping lanes. Whale attacks the small TK on the surface and sinks it! [&o]

Sub attack at 26,64

Two hexes further South Sealion attacks the same TK TF on the surface sinking another empty, small TK! Absolutely amazing, the last three days we sunk 2 big and 2 small TKs. No doubt, tomorrow the airbases around this area will be full of Helens.

Hortlund set up a good ambush at PM in setting all his fighters at Lae (no more Cap spotted there) on LRCAO. The Lightnings had no chance but took down a couple of enemy fighters and most of my bombers turned back. Once again Nikmod proves to be a mod where you are far better off sending bombers EVERYTIME unescorted. Would the bombers have gone in alone I would have lost 2 or 3 more but not 20 Lightnings. The only reason I still send escorts with my bombers is to have a bit sense of realism as I donīt want to completely game the game... only 7 bombers lost.

no more losses on the ground. Will pick up a RCT that is 100% prepped and will unload it at Dutch Harbour. Recon tells us 1000 troops 0 guns 0 vehicles now at Dutch Harbour. Will be enough though, if our RCT again gets 95% disabled just from the landing...

we moved 96 Kittyhawks to Tenimbar to sweep Lautern as Timor has now not that many fighters on Cap anymore, probably a lot are transferred to Southern New Guinea. First wave fails to locate the target and in the end we get shot to pieces more or less...

then the bombers from Darwin are going in. You can imagine that Hortlund isnīt happy about the result, in the end we lose 11 bombers, only 7 crews. The base is hit hard but being a level 6 af, itīs still far from being closed, recon shows only 42% damage and 40.000 troops there should repair it quickly. We really have to wait for Corsairs to be operational in a couple of weeks to wear down the enemy here. And honestly, I doubt the Corsair will be the wonder weapon we are waiting for as my Marine pilots are only in the mid 50s so they will be shot to pieces by Zeroes flown by pilots in the 80s. But these attacks here should draw more forces into the area as it will be harder for the enemy to defend both Southern New Guinea and Timore with sufficient force, which means hundreds of fighters.

one of our intelligence mines tells us that CV Kaga is now at Truk. Mk10 mine could cause a dozen sys damage. Honestly, while itīs BS that you get such intelligence itīs surely good for the game as such things are the "highlights" we need to have fun and if it would be realistic and we wouldnīt get those messages, a lot of fun would be gone also IMO.

Hortlund was totally upset about this attack. It wasnīt that he forgot to stand down his bombers that pissed him off, it was the result! He thinks that it is completely ridicoulos that Allied fighters can take down Japanese bombers in droves! IN DROVES??

Well, 57 Kittyhawks shot down 13!! Helens over Tenimbar another 6 were lost A2A but must have crashed on the way home or during landing and 5 were claimed lost to flak. Hmm, IMO this result is pretty near reality and is something I would expect in real life. 57 fighters claim 13 out of 118 medium bombers being shot down over the target. Not too much, not too few IMO. After sending this turn, he told me that no more turns would arrive for a while as Nikmod really pisses him off as in his oppinion cripples the Japanese completely, making Allied bombers super immune to Japanese fighters, while Allied fighters can take down Japanese bombers just like in stock!

One day after this battle happened I can say now that Japanese bombers are also at least 4 times as hard to down as in stock, there are not just leakers, but 90% of strikes of 100+ bombers are getting through Cap of 60 fighters. For me, IJN bombers vs Allied fighters is working excellent in Nikmod. Japanese fighters have 0 problem to take down Allied fighters at all, but are helpless against Allied medium bombers, not to talk about 4E bombers, as those seem to be nearly immune to everything (but are damaged all the time and available in very low numbers concerning replacement rates). I agree 100% with Hortlund that kill rates of Japanese fighters against Allied bombers are too low. IMO they should be doubled but thatīs it then. What Hortlund seems not to accept is the fact that Allied fighters had far more fire power than the Japanese fighters and that Allied bombers could take far more damage than Japanese bombers. So weaker Japanese fighters and stronger Allied bombers just have to result in lower Allied bomber losses when they encounter Japanese fighters compared to Japanese losses when Japanese bombers encounter Allied fighters. This is realistic. What is a problem is really the fact that lets say 80 Zeroes only take 10 out of 200 Mitchells down, which seems to low for me, but perhaps someone can correct me.

While I have some problems with the mod too (probably far less thans with stock though) I think itīs like Nik said: the overall picture looks good, so again thanks for the work he puts into creating the mod!

The day when the Corsair enters production! This is the good news!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/01/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1030 troops unloading over beach at Dutch Harbor, 103,36

Allied ground losses:
1955 casualties reported

last time I landed a RCT (that was 40% prepped) here it got 95% disabled from just the landing. There was a lot of Bullshit explanation about pip and pap blah blah abstracted small gun fire and so on. Last time not a single shot showed up in the replay so all this blah blah of small arms fire was just a joke IMO as this "small arms fire" that doesnīt show up in the report disabled 95% of my RCT, even though all that Hortlund had at this base were 2500 completely crappy troops that were bombed by air and naval bombardments for months without a break. The RCT was wrecked!

Now, months later, I sent the next RCT (100% prepped now) against this base that was bombed a couple of months more with a single, completely disabled mini naval guard unit left (recon shows 1000 troops). This unit is so wrecked, my SBDs on ground attack stopped causing casualties a week ago, so this unit is just like a ghost!

Well, my 100% prepped RCT lands and gets 73% disabled and 2% are dead! Nearly all heavy weapons are disabled as well as the support squads. We have a whopping 29 assault points left! Sorry, but thereīs nothing that could justify such a result AGAIN! Itīs just BS to see troops landing without opposition (donīt come up with this small arms fire - thatīs a joke and not abstracted in the game as the enemy unit has nothing left to shot at my troops) being completely wrecked. And I have seen this same BS often enough while landing at empty bases also - and Dutch Harbour is nowhere different to an empty base. Use the development of AE to look at some major flaws in the engine. Now or never. I fear never...

Just look at the disruption! The landing was just "perfect" when looking at the disruption, still the RCT isnīt existing as combat unit anymore...

I wonder if the date has anything to do with this. I mean, it is Feb 43 in the Aleutions. Weather up there is absolutly horrible in the winter.

I have no idea. Thatīs the first explanation I hear that sounds really reasonable. Now the question is, does weather influence invasions (of course it does in real life, but does it also in WITP?). In real life an invasion at this date wouldnīt be possible, would it? I have never heard of it nor read. This would be a new dimension then if thunderstorms or winter in Alaska influence invasions. That would be so important that it would be an unbelievable oversight to not mention it in the manual.

Yes, like jumper says, I was wrong in thinking after years of playing I would know the rules of the game. I stand corrected, hereīs the reason for the high casualties and Iīm just a dork who wrecked two RCTs in two different invasions in winter:

Cold Zones during the winter impact
ground units the same way as Malaria Zones (above), with the following added penalties:...

o Ground units unloading at an enemy base/beach or into a non-base hex
with an enemy unit will suffer roughly three times the losses they would
normally suffer

Nah, not a dork. I have played since first release, and still do not know all the rules of this game. Plus you get really used to be able to invade anywhere and anytime on every other part of the map. I have been lucky in all my games to not have to fight up north. So this same rule probably would have bit me too.

About the "bomber versus fighter" theme

jep, i think the nikmod has a problem.

cause the huge numbers of allied 2/4-engine-bombers, the japanese is not only helpless but canīt do anything against.
If (big if) the japanese player is able to mount 300-400 fighters, a 200-bomber-attack is doomed. Point. No way they will survive. cause they do not the box-defence but pairs flying in. So a lot fighters against few bombers. If the japanese fighters are as fast as the bombers and have exp.75+ the allies should loose (if not turn) 50-80% of its attack.
But with nikmod it is under best conditions maybe 5-10%. To remember, in the best case.
If the odds went bad for the japanese player, he canīt do anything against unescorted med/heavy-bombers that destroy anything the japanese try to do.

So the only chance for an ongoing game is a house rule for med/heavy attacks.
e.g. say only with escorts, never more groups as the base-air-level (+1 for <4 Bases), etc... so the numbers of attacking bombers stay in an accectable range and a heavy defence could knock out such attacks

Normally i am against such rules, but with nickmod the alternate is to drop or (as the japanese) do also everything beyond any hr.

Actually I know this rule, because some time ago I have landed the Americal division on unguared Omnetokan Jima, got 70% disablements and wondered why. I was really surprised to find the answer in the manual..

I think your men just hated you after you ordered them to land through freezing water and ice slosh during the winter...
