In shock, the empire cancels all shipbuilding -again

Batten down the hatches time

The fleet has wasted its fuel reserves -it is returning home -trying to dodge all the SS

Some air groups coming back onto map -zeke pool is perilous though.

15/7/44

I lose an AO to SS today -first caso of the great return home
heavy bombing everywhere.
Big convoy arrives at Morotai -where a division from soerabaya is unloading
Tabpub interdicts -3 AP lost to liberators, a PG, a MSW as well

My betties have been penny packet attacking all over the place -I am not(although the AAR might suggest it) been passive -simply nothing iether getting through -or if it does -it misses.

Ambionia falls

The baddies are squeezing me now.

16/7/44
heres an exact copy of my notes as this turn unfolded

AK -sunk by ss of Iwo
AP hits mine soerabaya -sinks
10 sonia -attack homan -50 CAP
33 tony, 14 betty, 44 Francis attackHoman airfield -Im after his B-29s -23 T bolts, 29 P40n CAP -its slaughter, no survivors, no hits, no nothing

kendari bombed
29 Frank at Morotoi CAP -46 p40n and 16 B-26 attack
13 frank lost, ships spared -the convoy is 50% unloaded of a full division here
Weda hit
23 oscar kamis from Weda attack -10 get through his CAP at ambionia -no hits
59 lightnings strike Morotoi -32 liberators -15 franks CAP -24 hits on the field, the franks fled
More liberators morotoi -7 AK/AP hit
3, then 12 francis attack Ambionia -6 get through -miss the BBs there
6 bettys do not get through
AO is missed by a ss -the ss is sunk in turn

A typical day of the war as of late -all my attacks fail.
His heavy bombers sink anything in range.
grrrrrrrrrr

A bad day

1 -incredibly boring, bombing raid after bombing raid after bombing raid all over the map.
Massive LBA strikes the ships at Morotio -they have unloaded though -17 ships sunk.

That is IT, for ships, I literally have only about 50 AK/ap hulls left.

Slaughter, slaughter, slaughter.

18/7/44
The fleet arrived home -fuel tanks dry, and little to fill them in the home islands

This turn almost broke my heart, almost gave up to be frank
A bug has ripped some 500 pilots from me.
Most CV groups lost half there pilots.
Now the experience levels are back to the 30's and 40's,.
I had 3 airgroups in home islands with 100-150 pilots of 60 plus experience in them, over the last 2 years I have disbanded all my shattered groups into these 3 squadrons -hoping that I would be able to sustain the home island defence.
Some of these were 90 experience pilots.
All, all the excess pilots have vanished from the map basically.
If the group was at normal pilot strength, no change -overborne -gutted.

Yet again the game causes more damage than Tabpub could.
This is a fatal blow.
I am now going to convert ALL CV groups to Kamis and zero cap -max escorts -and just go for 1 big attack -and hope I can cause some damage.
Plans to get the BBs into range under a big CAP of planes are finished.

BUGGAR IT!

Bizarre loss of pilots. Looks like vengeance for all those UV games with that Noumea P-39 group that was always overstrength in pilots.

Now  you have me worried - that has been a favoured strategy of mine, building large groups of good to very good pilots to use at critical junctures.

Now you are telling me they might just desert!

I wonder whether you have reached the magical pilot limit.

I have noticed an occasional interesting bug the other way at times - every once and a while, when you get more than the usual 1 naval replacement in a day, you draw him down but there is still one left in the pool.  I have received up to 10 mystically trained pilots this way.  I assume that they may well be WIA or MIA pilots that have rejoined the fight, but can't confirm that.

Posting from work, and memory
had a few E mail problems, so a minor delay to the game.

If you are reading Tabpub -I see his latest title says Siagon isolated

Well that is right, there is little hope that siagon will last much longer.
That leaves the army in malaya to be destroyed by him -that will take a while I think.

Its all relative -the resource areas are not really worth anything to me now, as I have little shipping left

Honestly have been pretty bored with this game for a while as Tabpub grinds away, having all the airgroups experience suddenly go from the mid 60's to less than 40 in a lot of cases also really is a gut kicking.

So I have converted all CV dive bombers to Kamis -put the CVs to 30% CAP -and will -if I get the fuel -simply charge the enemy -put all the fighters on escort -and hope enough numbers will allow us to get the strike through.
The CVs will get killed -but maybe the BBs will be able to get in then.
Counter attack at this stage is simply impossible, as his heavy 4 engined bombers simply spot and sink anything in range - I need him to leap ahead a bit and expose himself -something he simple will not do.

Frustrating
I watch hours of bombing - then plot for about 5 minutes -and its all about fuel gathering at the moment -not much about iether!
Its fairly obvious that he will by pass Siapan -its the phillipines I think.
At least here I have gazillions of troops -especially in davao.

The next battle will probably be Morotio -I hope the division that I unloaded here will delay him long enough for the fleet to get south -IF I gather the fuel .

At this rate this may well be a game where the fleet is sunk in port -the carriers with no airgroups onboard -the BB's and CA's with no fuel in the tanks

I think this bug happens when the pilot roster with 10000 pilots is exhausted.
You will then experience each turn that your pilots 'disappear'. This can be a critical show stopper.
Which version are you using?

Suggest you find a turn that dates back to before the pilot bug hit and put the game on hold until
it can be figured out if this can be fixed. If not you're toast.

You still have a long long road ahead, no way you can do without pilots as well.
If you find 1944 one sided, 1945 will be a lot tougher

Uggh. 500 pilots a day That does sound like a demoralizing deal-breaker.

Why couldnt they set the pilot limit at 2 to the 32nd power (4294967296) or something?

OK

I have not posted for a couple of days.
Tabpub has advised me to put a hold on turns -we have hit a game breaker with the pilot issue -he and Joe are trying to come up with a soultion -me -Im too thick of a computer brick to do anything to help , so Im trusting the Yanks here!

This really, is, BAD, BAD , BAD news for this game -and any one playing WITP .
3 years of playing are at risk here -let alone my entire strategy of the last 18 game month time.

I have not had much time to read the forums of late -but I sincerely hope the expansion pack solves this problem.
I for one cannot face starting a game now where you cannot finish.
So, for the moment -this game is on hold, and the decisive battle remains unfought.

Just a bump

The game aint dead yet -but its also hard to find a pulse

After playing for so long with the strategy of a decisive battle in the phillipines, backed by the pilot pools so painfully built back up - Im not really prepared to play for another year
as just a punching bag with rookie pilots -with no chance of any striking back at all.

have not heard from tabpub for a while.
See what happens I suppose.

game back on
we live with the pilot bug -so now on both sides everyone is inexperienced
could make for a less bloody air combat model though -so we will battle on.
I have to re think final battle plans, also pilot training is now a waste of time, so I will just commence throwing planes into battle

Todays turn -bombs - a few more bombs
Looking for fuel, and ytrying to think -now where were we - OH yes, getting smashed on a daily basis!
The fleet back in Japan does not even at the moment have enough fuel to get to davao -and hardly a single port in japan has any as well.

Im just practising for Peak oil IRL

Posting from work and memory

back to the somewhat historical game

Strategically though Matrix has this game spot on.
I really, really feel the pain of japans lack of fuel, lack of resources now, and the effects of a devastating submarine campaign against me.
(but you do not need to play the game apparently to be able to talk about that)
Im scrambling for fuel, absolutely hunting for every last drop.

Today the fleet sailed for the last time from Japan -a real one way trip -no ship has enough fuel to get home

Over kendari the first fighters that I had training -Franks go into action, tabpub has been attacking with beufighters and P40"s -we lose 5 planes, he loses 21.
Nice

I am moving all planes to the front, and fighting -training no point now.
( We could not resolve the pilot bug). I have every merchant at sea now, all hunting fuel.

His SS sunk 3 ships today -with all ships leaving Japan now -I expect carnage.
Tabpub really knows how to play the SS war -he has won this game hands down with just them alone -that and capturing the resource centres totally brocken.

Game continues to be a lot of fun though - expect a terrible battle very soon.

Its the yammato's suicide run times 100

The SS carnage continues -3 more AK lost/hit today to the ss
he pounds Kuala Lumpar resources with the B-29's

A nice big furl ball over kendari today -28 Franks and 20 tonies intercept 52 kittyhawks and 22 beaufighters

I lose 8 fighters, he loses 21!

the fleet/fleets are about parrallel with formosa - headed south
Any ship left that can carry fuel -or well about 75% are headed to davao with fuel as well.

Third day in a row to lose 3 AKs to SS - and a AO as well
nanchang and Kuala Lumpar again pounded.
Tabpub tells me that he is trying to get a feel on what is required to set large fires

Some Lillies kami -and miss PTs
grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

AV sanyo maru is sunk by a SS. Gawd, what a shocker of a turn.

And then 2 -yes 2 more AO hit by SS
How many SS are there out here!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
My ASW groups are dashing here and there - totally ineffectively
terrible turn

We actually sink a ss today -but guess what -2 AK, and a ML sunk.
Most of these losses have been two convoys off the north brunie coast.
Both convoys have failed to reach their destinations -totally hunted down.
tabpub tells me that he vectored a lot onto them -and they could not dodge, dodge, weave and duck!
Minor japanese air strikes, some kamis, some francis, some betties.
All miss/shot down.
nanking pounded again

Ok, Ive got a bit to catch up on today
The next 4 days are to be posted -a lot has changed too.

26/7/44
No SS attacks today!
I have begun moving plans to the front -as I figure the pilot bug must have hurt Tabpub as much as me.
The first major engagement is at maumere - enemy planse from Timor operating against it
34 frank of resonable experience battle 27 kittyhawks and 9 beufighters, I lose 5, he loses 7
A fast transport run into Weda is attacked on the way out -CL Yura and Yahagi are both hit by single bombs -they will fight on
The fleet keeps coming south.
I keep moving planes to the front

again maumere is a hot spot
20 frank vs 34 kitthawk, 8 beufighters.
I lose 6, he loses 4.

resistance is about to end in Siagon!

I consider things
He is bombing Weda again, and Morotia -its obvious as the month nears its end that his next attack -Tabpub is a attack once a month man -is due.
It will come due north -towards the phillipines -under LBA

A subsidory attack will depart from Timor -where Kupang forces will soon succumb -next target iether kendari, or, more likely, maumere.

I have decided to deploy max force against the timor op - based on the encouraging performance of my air against his commonwealth air.
I order 4 divisions in manilla to load!
Kupang -here we come
I intend to throw a big counter punch into his flank -as he committs to the north attack.
KB, will commit!

The Japanese have a mixed day today
3 waves of attackers attack maumare today

34 beufighters/19 kitty hawk - meet 11 tony, 21 george and 25 franks

18 enemy shot down for 10 lost

24 beufighters and 18 kittyhawk -meet 9 tony, 27george, and 23 frank

37 shot down for 2 lost

then another strike -32 beufighters, 25 kittyhawk - 24 shot down for 10 lost

but tabpub evens it up over morotai -I lose 20 franks for 3 kills vs corsairs and P38s

he bombs parishimo with B-29s -and other usual bombing about the map.

I am now fighting him in Timor -and trying to keep him honest in the southern area of the phillipines.
Half of KB, most of the surface fleet refuels Davao - enough fuel was gathered! -and heads towards balikapapan.

the other half is north of Yap at the moment, and a decoy force is near her as well..

WE GO TO FIGHT!

A mixed day of wins and losses -and a lot of frustrating stuff

Nothing to fret over as PZB has given such a good heads up on WITP little fobibles
We attack shipping at Kupang -Tabub has moved the corsairs in, but I don't think the pilots were very good -the bug has got him too

10 corsair
10 kittyhawk
9 beaufighters defended against
8 tony
17 george
36 Frank
21 oscar
12 kate
10 lilly

We shoot down 5 corsairs, and 6 kittyhawks, 5 beufighters

I lose 7 tony, 13 frank, and then watch every attack plane dive into an airfield
20 oscars then dive on -PT boats
41 frank escort 51 oscars -60 odd spits, kittys , boomerang defenders at lautern
we knock down 30 fighters, for 18 franks lost -all the oscars dive on a MSW -and miss

he pounds Palua with B-29s today
The afternoon sees yet more solid strikes go in, Franks, and oscars, with mixes of Grace and betty and sally bombers, losses are heavier in the arvo -28 enemy shot down for nearly 80 off all types lost

We miss the targets -destroyers -again

All up, 307 planes lost/expended today -for 81 enemy

This -for us -was a huge day of air combat - and really, really has me scraping the bottom of the barrel

Most of the fleet is half way from Davao to Balikapapan -although 3 old BBs and Ryujo are near Palua
With Weda, menando, wolemai all being pounded in the arvo - I expect the attack in this area very, very, shortly!

My airforce very quiet today -as shattered groups pull out
The fleet is nearly too Balikapapan -and here comes the invasion fleet -death star approaching Woleai!!!!!!!!

I could send one Task force of KB there -its just entered Davao -6 CVs in it -but decide not too - I continue the plan - a re -invasion of timor -the troops for which are now approaching Jolo island from the North.

The 3 BBs, and Ryujo are just near Yap - so I detach 4 DDs to Woleai - hope to catch his MSW -its a suicide run -but may be worth it -Tabpub will sit 2 hexes clear of the island until he deems it pacified enough.
I can see the invasion fleet about 6 hexes south of the death star

Token air attacks are ordered -futile -but will try to keep him honest!

Well, its August
And the Giant now strides about
A CAP of 320 plus planes is over wolemai, B-29s pound Ulithi, and countless helldivers and Avengers provide support

3 DDs are sunk at Wolemai - I tried to catch what i hoped would be the mineswepers -no go.

Some Kami Lillys sink a LVM near Dilli

I have a whole string of strikes go in at the invasion today - no results, no survivors..
Still, Im committed now. The majority of the fleet draws the last fuel again at Balikapapan, and waits for the remaining elements to catch up.

I think Tabpub smells a rat though........................

Tabpub attaention to detail knows no bounds -mines now dotting many bases in the phillipines - just more of the strangling.

The Invasion of Woeai continues (Ill learn how to spell it one day!0 -with 2 BBs pounding away today
Ulithi is creamed by B-29s - and its carnage as many planes are destroyed on the ground

About ten pitiful attacks go in against the death star - a few bombers here, a few more there -pathetic stuff.(not the game mechanics - just what Im reduced to here)

meanwhile, the fleet leaves balikapapan -trying to gather it for the great thrust.
Big plans for tomorrow - Kupang is full of ships -and I suspect not much CAP!

SSSSSSSSSSSMACKKKKKKKKKKKKKK!!!!!

A very good day for Japan today all up.
First the bad news -2 AOs blunder into air range just near morotio -they are sunk both by helldivers and a ss -which is sunk in return by the escorts

4 MSW run into the invasion fleet - BB Richelue expends a lot of Ammo - glug, glug, glug, go the MSW...............
really heavy Naval bombardments of Woleai, and masses of LBA heavies.

But this invasion is a bit different
For the first time in a long time the troops ashore are still very well supplied -and Tabpub tells me he thought only one regiment was there -true last month -not now.

2 full strength mixed brigade, 2special base forces, 2 base forces, construction troops, face 2 american divisions and a Amphib brigade -behind size 9 forts - and they are still in very, very good nick too.
0 to 1 shock attack -forts still 9, and 3860 caso's to my 508.

So by the looks of things Tabpub is stuck with another long slog - and today He sighted CV's (the ryujo) to the North east -and BBs to the North west.
Surely his death star has to stay put.

meanwhile My fleet is off mallacca -gathering
The strikes on Kupang go in today!!!!

39 kittyhawk, 11 corsair CAP
wave one:
14 Frank, 26 jack, 66 george,6 tony and 16 grace TBD

34 kittyhawk shot down, 1 corsair shotdown
33 of our fighters go down -Corsairs just too good -but the grace get in - for no hits

But the way is paved
wave 2 meets 10 corsair -5 kittyhawks
34 oscars escort 8 grace, 53 betties, 30 francis, 59 sally 23 helens
The oscars are good enough!
Just 2 bombers lost, and only 8 fighters as well.

The strike is good -I count 17 LCVPs sunk -and troop casualties are reported as well, so they were loaded.

I hope that this disrupted something

Tomorrow
1. Fleet to come into final strike range -at 90% CAP tomorrow
2. Flooding the area with as many fighters as I can scrape up
Bombers to the rear!!!!

Then day after -the plan is this -many BBs at eastern end of timor. Many ships in the area.
A Surface strike by light forces -hope to get a react towards dilli by his BBs.
Surface strikes into Kupang
And KB to go in and to kill what it can

Surface forces to seek battle.
And if all goes well - I intend to fight, and fight -4 divisions to crash ashore Kupang, and to force him to change his timetable -again.
Banzia!!!

Me thinks no one is reading this, but we persist.
Tabpub informs me I have thrown a spanner into the works -again!

Timor is emptying of ships like rats in front of a terrior -as the entire navy bears down on it.

Kupang suddenly grows 144 fighters according to recon, Dilli 100"s as well -lautern? who knows
There are no PTs at Kupang, just 4 at dilli, lots at Lautern
If tomorrow, I encounter them by the dozens at Kupang -well Ill be rightly pissed off!
The battle fleet commences bombardments of kupang tomorrow -and KB keeps coming, under max CAP

The woleai invasion - BB Hyuga and Ise are both hit by liberator bombers today -man I hate 4 engine bombers on low level naval attack
Still -they serve as a nice decoy -I hope
Ryujo works to the north east of truk -huntingI think she will die tomorrow.

Every plane I can spare is headed towards timor battle -and the troop convoy is now off Balikapapan.

Tomorrow the storm will break!!!!!!

I'm reading and well done on upsetting Tabpub, if just a little.

It's hard to be on the offensive in 44 as Japan!

Thanks guys for sticking around
As a reward - we present the first day of

THE DECISIVE BATTLE

The first day of the final days (I would think ) of KB begin
A singlre DD enters Kupang hbr -encounters 4 pt boats -the ones from dilli.
Sinks one -no damage
This is bad -it means the naval bombardments DID not occur

Worse -as daylight breaks - Jap ships still in hbr.
CRUD
AM Phase
MANY, MANY ships headed to Palua!
90 B-29s hit Hiroshima
Kuala Lumpar hit hard

18 P38 and 10 corsair escort 3 beuforts against the Atago in Kupang hbr -no hits

Then from Kupang, 10 kittyhawk, 19 corsair, 40 P38 escort 9 beuforts against KB
71 george and 433 zekes CAP
We shoot them all down -but lose 144 zekes, and 41 george -OUCH

Then comes waves of bombers against the CA Atago, CL Yahagi, CL Yura, DD Kashi, all in the hbr -they are badly beaten up - wont get home

Another small strike against the Kirishima -miss
And that is day one -but Im committed

Here are the orders

CVs
Kaga, Akagi,Hiryu, Taiho, soryu, shokuka, zuikaka, unryu,Amagi,Katsaguri,Junyo, Hiyo, chitose ,chiyoda, 5CVE in 3 Task forces sail to the hex 2 hexes due north of Kupang -30% CAP only -everything else on strike -the vast majority of Dive bombers are Kamis

1cl, 7 dd -attack Dilli -3 enemy BBs here at least -the main target -get them to react into the CV range

Yamato, Mushia, Nagato, Mutsu -7 dd will pound Kupang
3CA,4 cl will hit Kupang

Kirishima, Haranua to draw fire -charging towards Dilli

6 More CA to hit Kupang
And one little DD to sail to Lautern

Muamere -100 fighters to sweep Kupang, 50 bombers to bomb field
Kendari - bombers -many betties -naval attack
Maccassar - bombers on naval attack

There are still ships at Kupang, a fleet I think in Dilli

My counter invasion fleet will soon arive off Mallacca -its coming as hard as it can

This is it -I expect heavy losses - especially to his 4 engine LBA -I predict Liberators at 6000 feet to sink most of KB -but this was a one way trip - no fuel left.

BANZIA -we go down in glory!
