About the "bomber versus fighter" theme

jep, i think the nikmod has a problem.

cause the huge numbers of allied 2/4-engine-bombers, the japanese is not only helpless but canīt do anything against.
If (big if) the japanese player is able to mount 300-400 fighters, a 200-bomber-attack is doomed. Point. No way they will survive. cause they do not the box-defence but pairs flying in. So a lot fighters against few bombers. If the japanese fighters are as fast as the bombers and have exp.75+ the allies should loose (if not turn) 50-80% of its attack.
But with nikmod it is under best conditions maybe 5-10%. To remember, in the best case.
If the odds went bad for the japanese player, he canīt do anything against unescorted med/heavy-bombers that destroy anything the japanese try to do.

So the only chance for an ongoing game is a house rule for med/heavy attacks.
e.g. say only with escorts, never more groups as the base-air-level (+1 for <4 Bases), etc... so the numbers of attacking bombers stay in an accectable range and a heavy defence could knock out such attacks

Normally i am against such rules, but with nickmod the alternate is to drop or (as the japanese) do also everything beyond any hr.

Only escorted raids is nearly impossible due to the lack of Allied fighter range and it wouldnīt help because even though the escorts would die, there would be even more bombers. And honestly the Japanese bombers (while being more fragile than the Allied bombers) are also getting through high numbers of Cap in really high numbers.

We have a stacking rule of 50 aircraft / airfield size and with the super flak it would be even nearer to impossible than it already is to do real damage, means closing an airfield constantly. Yes, the bombers are nearly immune but you have one or two attacks and 80% of the bombers are inoperational, so in fact it is harder for the Allied to close bases, which means it makes live harder in general. Saying that from a standpoint where I have a Nikmod game going as the Japanese against Swift and one as the Allied against Hortlund.

While Hortlund thinks that Nikmod has crippled the Japanese side, I can say it as a player that plays both sides, the Japanese are far stronger in the long term than in stock. Far stronger. Why? Because they will never face an Uber Cap! Uber Cap isnīt existing in Nikmod. Strikes of 100 aircraft wonīt be completely shot down even if there are a lot of fighters on Cap. Even increasing this "problem" for me as the Allied with our stacking limits (which also go for CV based aircraft - 550 max/hex).

Nah, not a dork. I have played since first release, and still do not know all the rules of this game. Plus you get really used to be able to invade anywhere and anytime on every other part of the map. I have been lucky in all my games to not have to fight up north. So this same rule probably would have bit me too.

Itīs really amazing. I guess Iīve read the manual a couple of times in all those years and have played a couple of thousand PBEM turns but this rule was something I have never thought of. But it was a real good hint of you!

And Iīm impressed about this sense of realism!

Actually I know this rule, because some time ago I have landed the Americal division on unguared Omnetokan Jima, got 70% disablements and wondered why. I was really surprised to find the answer in the manual..

and noone told me after my first invasion that wrecked 95% of the first RCT?

I thought it was a small arms fire..

But seriously I didnīt follow your AAR in those days. I was reading PjHs side but had to stop when he started an AAR of the game against me and I was sure It would be just matter of time when I would click on the wrong one. And so I joined yours instead..

I just found out the hard way that the Jacks do well against Allied 4e bombers.
The Corsairs are very nice. However, with their high durability rating in Nik Mod, about 1/3 to 1/2 will always be damaged after constant CAP (I usually run them at 60 or 70%). Only after prolonged stand down will I get close to 100% availability.

Jacks wonīt be available until early 44!

Iīm experiencing the same problem with fighters flying cap and get damaged, mostly my Wildcats on the CVs. Canīt set them to more than 70% Cap, even if I wished to fly 90%. Itīs not that severe than in previous versions of Nikmod but still I regularly see CV fighter sqadrons having 25%+ of their aircraft damaged just from flying Cap. Could be a problem for my TFs when I think on the high number of enemy bombers that get through Cap without much of a problem. Only low morale of the attacker can save you, if the enemy bombers turn back.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/02/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1030 troops unloading over beach at Dutch Harbor, 103,36

Allied ground losses:
63 casualties reported

The rest of the RCT is unloading...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Mandalay , at 33,30

Allied aircraft
P-40B Tomahawk x 71
B-26B Marauder x 111

Allied aircraft losses
B-26B Marauder: 6 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
175 casualties reported
Guns lost 8

Airbase hits 5
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 56

Aircraft Attacking:
23 x B-26B Marauder bombing at 20000 feet

Mandalay seems to have very few engineers as the damage is repaired very, very slowly... Thatīs good, the only level 6 airfield is out of order for a long time after my attacks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Mandalay , at 33,30

Allied aircraft
Wellington III x 154
Liberator VI x 23

Allied aircraft losses
Wellington III: 1 destroyed, 4 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
52 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 11
Airbase supply hits 6
Runway hits 55

Aircraft Attacking:
9 x Wellington III bombing at 19000 feet

even though we lose nearly half a dozen bombers with every of those attacks, considering the flak fire, this is a milk run... though I still have to use my bombers at max altitude...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Kai Island , at 39,78

Allied aircraft
B-25C Mitchell x 208

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
73 casualties reported

Airbase supply hits 4

Allied aircraft
Hurricane IIb x 128
Kittyhawk I x 14
Beaufighter VIC x 10
P-40E Warhawk x 21

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
136 casualties reported
Guns lost 4

Aircraft Attacking:
14 x Hurricane IIb bombing at 2000 feet

The 4 units on the trail towards Imphal are now moving back to Mandalay it seems as one is on the rail again... guess Hortlund didnīt like the constant air attacks, I donīt understand anyway why he sends a rgt, a tank bgd, a mortar btn and an AA rgt towards Imphal...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF at 28,83

Japanese aircraft
G4M1 Betty x 6

Japanese aircraft losses
G4M1 Betty: 1 damaged

Allied Ships
AK John Hart, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet

Iīve sent a lonely AK from Broome to Darwin to have a freighter there that could pick up the radar of two base forces at Darwin to be sent to Tenimbar (base North of Darwin) but the freighter is immediately spotted AND attacked of course... the first three Betties put 3 torps into the ship and then the rest wasnīt able to locate it anymore...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 24,61

Japanese Ships
DD Asanagi
PC Kunashiri
PC Hachijo
APD APD-39

Allied Ships
SS Snapper, hits 3

This is the rest of the available "super ASW vessels" the IJN can field. The two PCs and the APD are the only IJN ships at the moment that have a higher ASW value than 4. In a couple of months the IJN will start receiving more PCs with an ASW value of 6 and higher.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Dutch Harbor

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 1338 troops, 13 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 33

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1

Now I know why my SBDs donīt cause anymore casualties when they are set to ground attack. The nav guard unit isnīt existing anymore... but can still be bombed...

We have now two Corsair squadrons in Australia waiting to get operational. In 10 days we will have another one. Without combat we would be able to upgrade 3 Marine squadrons every month, but I guess I will use them for the first time when I have 72 operational. With exp levels around or below 60 Iīm not really confident that they can achieve much against the high exp Zeroes...

Japanese max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

We take the base against something like a ghost unit. I donīt understand why this unit didnīt just vanish if itīs not existing anymore. It should have vanished and the base would have autoconverted, this would have saved our RCT from being wrecked from the invasion in the winter months...

This is an ouch turn!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 02/04/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 23,59

Japanese Ships
AK Turuga Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
MSW W.21

Allied Ships
SS Pickerel, hits 1

it starts off well though, West of Borneo was a big AK hit by a MK14 torp. The single escort tactic seem to have passed itīs peak of success and more and more often my subs score. One near miss on Pickerel and the sub will return to Darwin after being on station for a couple of weeks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Amboina , at 39,73

Japanese aircraft
A6M3a Zero x 18
Ki-43-IIa Oscar x 26
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 26
Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 13

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 101
B-24D Liberator x 92

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M3a Zero: 1 destroyed, 11 damaged
Ki-43-IIa Oscar: 2 destroyed, 12 damaged
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 3 destroyed, 21 damaged
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 13 damaged
Ki-57-II Topsy: 2 destroyed
Ki-49 Helen: 4 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 4 destroyed, 93 damaged
B-24D Liberator: 4 destroyed, 51 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
38 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Airbase hits 4
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 23

Aircraft Attacking:
29 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 10000 feet

thatīs the reason why I said itīs an ouch turn. The enemy sent his Helens earlier from Amboina to bomb Tenimbar and we still saw a fat, dark airfield symbol so I thought that there will still be a lot of bombers and probably no Cap as I guessed he thinks that my 4Es are around Cairns and not at Darwin. I didnīt fly any recon before as I wanted to do a surprise attack. Well, as you can see, the surprise was on my side, meeting 83 enemy fighters on Cap. Even though Hortlund will think that he did no damage, I can say that this is again what I call something like a disaster as we lost a monthly replacement of B17s and nearly another dozen of B-24s. Total bomber losses here today: 26! Seems low but my BGs are completely wrecked, 70% of the B-17s turned back due to low morale, the B-24s pressed through and after being attacked by the fighters, the undamaged rest was shot up by flak. All my BGs have no a morale around 20 and only 20% of the bombers are operational. They have to be withdrawn South to be built up again. Hortlund lost 30 aircraft today but I guess he doesnīt know that this was a Japanese victory. And the weeks pass...

Without the 200 4Es I canīt even think about an invasion as Hortlund now again focusses on a couple of bases that he Caps with 200 fighters and as those bases canīt be closed (not even attacked), an invasion around those strongholds would (and will be) absolutely bloody because after one day my CV Cap will be completely worn down.

Sub attack near Lautem at 33,78

Japanese Ships
DD Hayate
DD Yuzuki
DD Nagatsuki
DD Asagiri

Allied Ships
SS S-34, hits 4, on fire, heavy damage

There are still two IJN BBs sitting at Lautern (under a Cap of 150+ fighters) and my subs had no chance so far. S-34 missed Hayate with 4 torps and is sunk immediately in return.

130 Mitchells attacked this TF at 6000ft today, achieving 3 bomb hits. Thatīs the might of the Allied bomber force. Hortlund has parked several BB/CA TFs for months in range of my bombers in Timor and New Guinea and donīt even has to fly Cap to cover them as they are immune to bomber attacks. Another example how crippled the Japanese are in Nikmod or WITP in general. Hortlund is doing something that would have been impossible in real life.

Just imagine I would place a couple of BBs/CAs without Cap in range of 200 Betties...

while it isnīt a problem to hit slow transports with a load of 500lb bombs, itīs harder to hit the agile IJN warships! A CA was hit by a 2000lb bomb though! I have no idea if it wasnīt FOW though as the CA wasnīt heavily burning after the hit and it doesnīt show up as heavily damaged either. A 2000lb bomb should cause serious damage to a cruiser, shouldnīt it?

attack on the BB/CA TF in the afternoon failed to locate the target but 30 B-17s finish off the still floating merchants. Today we saw 4 big AKs (one near Borneo from a torp hit and 3 at Thursday Island from air attacks) and 1 small AK sinking.

Hortlund operates this ASW group in the Borneo area and when I look at the last couple of weeks, it really seems that our subs are getting effective again. Hit on a precious DD with a MK14 torp (DDs must be very precious for the IJN already)

what a result... have got 400 bombers in India available and they will work on closing down all airfields in Burma. Perhaps this forces our enemy to relocate some fighters to Burma again (not massing them all on Timor and New Guinea).

yesterday Hortlund sent out his BB TF from Lautern to go into position North of Darwin so I sent in my torp bombers with some escorts. Well, the escorts lost 17:2 (guess the Zeroes shot down 14 Wildcats for no loss...) and then??? F*CK YOU! My torp bombers launched against the ASW TF that follows the fat, high value BB TF that was spotted 10 times today! Excellent chose of target. My torp bombers could have achieved something against the slow, old IJN BBs but the game decides it would be better to send them against the agile DDs. Called it luck for the enemy or whatever, but it sucks...

small number of bombers, BIG number of escorts! Big number of bombers, SMALL number of escorts... guess someone should take a look at the routine that puts up the airstrikes...

We lose 80+ aircraft today but took down 40+ enemy fighters. We achieve two bomb hits on DDs and a torp hit on a DD. The bombs on the BBs just bounced off. Hortlund told me he only lost 5 pilots but I donīt believe him. 5 out of 40+ shot down?? I guess we will see a bombardment of Darwin tomorrow, but I havenīt evacuated it. There are 12 PTs, 2 DDs and a lot of subs on the way to Darwin. We have 400 aircraft at Darwin and the remaining torp bombers at Tenimbar are still on nav attack.

Hortlund called it a total Japanese victory again, but Iīm (once again) of different oppinion.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Toboali at 22,57

Japanese Ships
AK Kenryu Maru, Shell hits 4

Allied Ships
SS Sealion, hits 1

unescorted AK at Toboali is attacked on the surface. The only torp salvo missed and the AK is hit by 3x40mm and a 4 inch shell... Hit on the sub is FOW...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 72 encounters mine field at Lae (54,87)

Japanese Ships
AP Josho Maru, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Japanese ground losses:
28 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Argonautīs MK10 mines hit an AP... I only have 3 sub mine layers but they are really doing a great job. Reason for that is that Hortlund doesnīt care at all about the sub laid mines. He just does nothing against spotted minefields. Unbelievable but thatīs how it is. And thatīs the reason he has lost several ships to sub laid mines and had BBs and just recently CV Kaga hit a sub laid mines. When I think about my IJN game against Swift, my opponent uses all his Allied subs to lay mines, but has achieved nearly nothing as I pay attention to all spotted subs and MSWs are on the whole map to clear sub laid mines immediately.

Tenimbar was nearly empty, thatīs why I took just a few aircraft lost on the ground. Our torp bombers attacked the retiring DDs and Uranami was confirmed sunk. Another DD sunk, but as I have been told before, Hortlund doesnīt need his DDs. 70+ IJN DDs lost so far...

we use our surface raider group from Cairns to attack shipping at Gili Gili. The PG and the AK are sunk, the other one is heavily damaged from a MK10 mine hit...

then a minesweeping TF goes in to Lae but the included PG hits another sub laid MK10! Itīs real fun! The PG could be in real trouble.

there are still a lot of aircraft at Lae but most fighters are on Cap over Gili Gili (100+ in ther air) and PM (80 in the air). We recon Thursday, Gili Gili, PM and Lae every day and today 150 4Es flew an agressive recon mission! No biggy but the Japanese lost 54 aircraft on the whole map today. 4 4Es are lost to various cases. We have to find a way to force our opponent to spread his Cap. Bases with 100 fighters on Cap and dozens of AA units are impossible to attack.

impossible to sneak even single ships to Darwin... perhaps I should use Hortlundīs tactic of picket ships! Send one AK one hex off Derby and Cap it with 200 fighters then! Take down 50% of the 30 attacking bombers with 200 fighters and hear the crying about using a picket ship and how crippled the Japanese are when the Allied still have so mighty fighters - that lose 5-15:1 against Japanese fighters...

Send out your PBYs and LB from Brisbane at 1000' naval search. This should increase the detection level on his sub and if their experience level is high enough even get a hit. Then your hunter/killer groups should be able to go in for the kill.

quiet everywhere. Rather boring but I canīt take on the Japanese strongholds with hundreds of fighters and dozens of AA units in one base yet. Have to build up the pool of P-38s and Corsairs first, no sense in sending in 48 60exp Corsairs against 200 80 exp Japanese fighters on Timor.

Probably 2 of those AKs are lost, how Hortlund cared about his ships in the past I would guess all three will be lost. 3 big AKs lost with 16500 tons of resources! Excellent turn...

What avenue do you think that you'll take when you start your offensive?

First targets will be on Southern New Guinea, pretty sure the first invasion will go in at Thursday Island as this is a temperate hex and the only base in that region I can bomb with my Mitchells. Then PM, Gili Gili and in between perhaps Merauke if it isnīt strongly defended. Iīm 99% sure that Hortlund knows that too. Should be 100% sure as I told him that I cancelled my PM invasion a couple of weeks ago as my TFs were hit by the movement bug off Cairns for 10 days and didnīt move a single hex while being spotted nearly every day. I told him that 3000 assault points were scheduled to go in at PM! Of course Iīm not planning to throw in 10 divs on PM. I have 3000 av 100% prepped for Thursday, PM and Gili Gili together and I guess those numbers should be sufficient, while I get more and more divs and RCTs that I could use as reinforcements. I donīt know if he believed me but if so, then Iīm sure PM will get a lot of reinforcements in the next weeks. I can also bypass it and only take Thursday and Gili Gili. The more troops he pumps into PM the less he will have for Thursday and Gili Gili or Timor and Northern New Guinea. We will see.

But Hortlund will surely have to strongly defend Timor too, as this could be the first target also, even though I would have to go around Australia with my TFs. The plan is now to make Hortlund think that we will attack Timor first as this is the direct way into the SRA. Then we have to wear down a lot of Japanese fighters over Timor and do a lot of bombing there to prepare (far later) landings and to draw away fighters from New Guinea and wear the enemy fighter daitais down. But with the previous engagements of enemy fighters this will be a really tough job as my pilots are just not up to the enemy aces with 80+ exp.

We have now some 60 Corsairs operational (exp between 55 and 65) and a dozen still repairing (a Corsair squadron repairs one or two aircraft a day, so it takes at least 12-15 days to repair a whole Marine squadron). I have 24 P-38 operational, another 72 plane FG is repairing, at 3 or 4 aircraft a day, means weeks until itīs operational. The key to airsuperiority over Timor will be the airfield of Tenimbar (North of Darwin) as this base is 5 hexes from Lautern (major base on Timor with 200+ enemy fighters in the air every day!!!!!). Tenimbar started out at airfield size 0(0) and Iīve been building it up since half a year with 300 eng and 50 eng vehicles but am only at 2 (63%). Building up a 0(0) af is nearly impossible, even for the Allied. Increasing 1% a day which means another month until we reach level 3. Then I can do sweeps with 150 fighters against Lautern. When Tenimbar will be ready I will have some 120 Corsairs ready, they will do the first major sweep. I guess after this first sweep, the Corsairs will be exhausted (probably 60 shot down and another 40 dam). Then they will be brought out and the next day we follow up with 150 Australian/Canadian Kittyhawks. Also on the second day (or on the third) we will launch 300 Mitchells with 100 P-38 as escorts from Darwin (6 hexes, normal range for the Mitchell, 6x500lb bombs each bomber). On day four I will either have airsuperiority over Eastern Timor or I will have to wait another month because my fighters were completely shot to pieces, not doing much damage to the enemy.

So the plan is to see 300 enemy fighters destroyed after day 3 and see major fighter reinforcements coming in from New Guinea afterwards. The most important thing will be to destroy as many Zero daitais as possible as those will be the ones escorting the Betties that will attack my invasion and carrier TFs. The Betties will break through my Cap but if thereīs not enough cover from the Zeroes they will still take a high toll (and Hortlund wonīt like that!! as he thinks they should be as imune and durable as my B-17s ).

The problem now is that most of the fighters defending Timor are IJAAF Tojos and not Navy fighter squadrons, but I guess as soon as I have worn down the Tojos, there will be more and more Zeroes show up. So thatīs the plan, but it still takes time and weīre already in 43, while we havenīt seen any major Allied invasions (only the disastrous landings on Dutch Harbour during the winter months, but those werenīt major invasions anyway). But I just have to wait, the longer the better. Last time I immediately used my P38s when one squadron was ready and it was shot down at 1:15 by 100 defending Zeroes. In 3/43 we will see P-47C going online, that will be 35 additional long range (6 hexes ) fighters.

The only real strong weapon I have are the 200 high exp 4Es operating out of Australiaīs East coast but one attack against a strongly defended base and 80% of them arenīt operational on day two.

Have you gotten the Boomerang IIs yet?? I'm on hold with my CHS 158c Nik Mod game and I've used them to replace the useless Wirraways. They have a nice range for possible teaming up with your P-47C. I have PDU on so I was able to upgrade the Wirraways to Beaufighter and after training them up to the low 70's, switch them over to the Boomerang's.

The one thing about Nik Mod is the increased durability of the Corsairs is nice for survivability, but sucks as they cannot stay on CAP for extended periods before the squadrons start to approach 50% damage.

Iīve got Boomerang IIs but they really suck and I donīt have any Wirraways on the map. They have been upgraded to Hurricanes - Spitfire - Kittyhawk a long time ago. The only advantage of the Boomerang vs the Kittyhawk is that it has one hex more range but when I look at how easily my Kittyhawks die then I wonīt use any Boomerang II for the whole war.

deja vu like nearly every day: two subs of mine were attacked by Helens, one was hit by a bomb...

why this single CD gun unit at Akyab is so super effective, no one knows... not a single hit on the airfield or port, this base has been reconned daily by dedicated recon aircraft for a year now...

not a good idea to do ground attacks as we see the old strange feature of flak being 5 times more effective when defending an LCU and not the base or port... 7 aircraft lost to flak today...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 62,71

Japanese Ships
TK Ogurasan Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Allied Ships
SS Finback

North of Truk we hit a fuel loaden 6000 ton TK! Fuel is burning, would be luck if the TK will make it. My Wolfpack in the area will try to shadow the TF, probably going directly to Truk...
