Summary of Operations 1/31/43 Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 106 days. North Pacific: Jap attacks on Adak continue - carrier air strikes, also bombardment from Jap surface TF. AAR's follow. Current base status in Adak - port damage 44, airfield (service damage 41, runway damage 99). Some additional damage in today's attacks though not as severe as initial attacks on 1/30. All heavily damaged ships remaining in Adak after initial attacks (see Adak base port display from the 1/30 game turn reports) were sunk in today's game turn either from additional damage in today's attacks or the result of ship damage adjustment phases during game turn resolution. With the exception of the two AS's and one PC (where serious effort to save & repair them were feasible), the majority of the ships would most likely have sunk anyway in game turn damage adjustment phases. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Naval bombardment of Adak Island, at 97,38 Allied aircraft no flights Allied aircraft losses B-26B Marauder: 1 destroyed B-24D Liberator: 1 destroyed P-39D Airacobra: 1 destroyed Japanese Ships BB Hiei BB Haruna BB Kirishima BB Kongo BB Musashi Allied Ships MSW Requisite, Shell hits 2, on fire, heavy damage AS Proteus, Shell hits 7, on fire, heavy damage AK Makiki, Shell hits 1, on fire, heavy damage PC Aurora, Shell hits 2, on fire, heavy damage SC Dawson, Shell hits 2, on fire, heavy damage MSW Canso, Shell hits 1, on fire, heavy damage SC Vancouver, Shell hits 2, on fire, heavy damage SC Moncton, Shell hits 4, on fire, heavy damage Allied ground losses: 1923 casualties reported Guns lost 14 Vehicles lost 15 Runway hits 23 Port fuel hits 1 Port supply hits 2 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on Adak Island , at 97,38 Japanese aircraft A6M2 Zero x 8 A6M3 Zero x 36 A6M3a Zero x 11 Allied aircraft no flights Japanese aircraft losses A6M2 Zero: 6 damaged A6M3 Zero: 12 damaged A6M3a Zero: 4 damaged Allied aircraft losses PBY Catalina: 1 destroyed Airbase hits 1 Airbase supply hits 1 Runway hits 12 Aircraft Attacking: 7 x A6M3 Zero bombing at 2000 feet 8 x A6M2 Zero bombing at 2000 feet 6 x A6M3 Zero bombing at 2000 feet 6 x A6M3 Zero bombing at 2000 feet 3 x A6M3a Zero bombing at 2000 feet 3 x A6M3a Zero bombing at 2000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on Adak Island , at 97,38 Japanese aircraft A6M3 Zero x 71 D3A2 Val x 106 D4Y Judy x 15 A6M3a Zero x 6 B5N2 Kate x 141 Allied aircraft no flights Japanese aircraft losses D3A2 Val: 2 destroyed, 28 damaged D4Y Judy: 1 destroyed, 2 damaged B5N2 Kate: 1 destroyed, 4 damaged Allied aircraft losses P-39D Airacobra: 1 destroyed B-26B Marauder: 1 destroyed P-38G Lightning: 2 destroyed PBY Catalina: 1 destroyed Allied Ships MSW Bellechasse, Bomb hits 10, on fire, heavy damage MSW Canso, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage MSW Requisite, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage AS Proteus, Bomb hits 8, on fire, heavy damage AK Makiki, Bomb hits 7, on fire, heavy damage SC Vancouver, Bomb hits 4, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage AS Sperry, Bomb hits 10, on fire, heavy damage MSW Outarde, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage Allied ground losses: 70 casualties reported Vehicles lost 1 Airbase hits 2 Runway hits 51 Port hits 7 Port fuel hits 3 Port supply hits 5 Aircraft Attacking: 14 x D4Y Judy bombing at 2000 feet 15 x B5N2 Kate bombing at 27100 feet 20 x D3A2 Val bombing at 2000 feet 7 x B5N2 Kate bombing at 27100 feet 17 x D3A2 Val bombing at 2000 feet 12 x B5N2 Kate bombing at 27100 feet 13 x D3A2 Val bombing at 2000 feet 12 x B5N2 Kate bombing at 27100 feet 15 x D3A2 Val bombing at 2000 feet 15 x B5N2 Kate bombing at 27100 feet 15 x D3A2 Val bombing at 2000 feet 15 x B5N2 Kate bombing at 27100 feet 13 x B5N2 Kate bombing at 27100 feet 12 x D3A2 Val bombing at 2000 feet 9 x B5N2 Kate bombing at 27100 feet 12 x D3A2 Val bombing at 2000 feet 9 x B5N2 Kate bombing at 27100 feet 5 x B5N2 Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet 9 x B5N2 Kate bombing at 27100 feet 7 x B5N2 Kate bombing at 27100 feet 6 x B5N2 Kate bombing at 27100 feet 6 x B5N2 Kate bombing at 27100 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Time Surface Combat, near Adak Island at 97,38 Japanese Ships BB Kongo BB Haruna BB Hiei BB Kirishima BB Musashi DD Yugumo DD Isonami DD Fumizuki DD Asanagi DD Ootori Allied Ships PT PT-75 PT PT-78 PT PT-79 PT PT-80 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Central Pacific: U.S. submarine Sargo sunk and Triton lightly damaged in attacks from Jap ASW TF's near Kwajalein.
