Central Pacific (elsewhere): U.S. sub Swordfish reporting sinking WNW of Johnston Is while returning to Pearl Harbor after being damaged near Kwajalein in a Jap air attack on 1/5.

Jap recon flight over Penhryn.


South Pacific: Jap recon flight over Auckland.

The Japanese surface TF near Wellington (NZ) and the Prince of Wales TF are playing "cat and mouse" with each other. Excerpts from the 1/16 Operations Report follow.

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 120 days.

Central Pacific (action at Kwajalein): U.S. carrier TF's near Kwajalein have been ordered to retire. Remaining in the Kwajalein area to continue the operation was no longer feasible given (1) the loss of tactical surprise and (2) the number of Japanese ships (estimated at 80-90 or more) that sorted from Kwajalein, many of these ships moving eastward towards the carrier TF's.

With the fighter aircraft losses on 1/16, (including both planes that were shot down & planes temporary "on the deck" in damaged condition), a carrier battle with the KB or its elements would have been highly risky with the reduced number of available F4F's for CAP and escorting strike missions. In addition, the chance of surface combat with Japanese surface TF's (possibly including Yamato and other BB's, numerous CA's, etc) was very high in the area close around Kwajalein. On top of all this, being within range of Jap LBA strikes.

Possible U.S. losses in both ships and aircraft from continuing the operation far outweighed any possible gains.

Except for the "glitch" (automatic at sea refuelling I did not expect but maybe should have), this operation did have its successful points. First, gaining experience in WitP carrier operations - particularly playing CHS and against a human opponent. Seeing the performance of F4F's vs various marks of the Jap Zero - much better than expected. Also taking a substantial toll on the KB's fighter aircraft and experienced fighter pilots in the air-to-air combat on 1/16 - some of the shot down U.S. pilots were fished out of the water, not necessary true for the KB's fighter pilots as they were shot down over my CV's. Finally, the performance of F4F's on CAP and flak from ships against attacking Kates - true there weren't many of them, but few of them got through to even launch an attack.

Sigint report for 1/17 includes entry indicating HQ Jap 8th Area Army is now at Truk. Previous known location of this LCU was in Tokyo on 11/17/42.


South Pacific: Jap recon flight over Auckland. The "hide and seek" action between Allied and Jap surface TF's east of Wellington (NZ) continues. A small naval air strike by Hudson I bombers against one of the Jap TF's off Wellington - AAR follows.

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 119 days.

Central Pacific: U.S. carrier TF continue returning to base. No detected Japanese pursuit, though carrier TF's were spotted by an H8K Emily flying naval search. Rest assured Pillager will be flying naval search in this sector from now on.

DD Gwin (damaged from bomb hit on 1/16) continues proceeding separately, moving nicely and should make it with no problem.

Jap minesweeping ops underway in Kwajalein. U.S. submarines east of Kwajalein and at Canton Is reporting contacts with a variety of Jap aircraft on patrol.


South Pacific: Allied and Japanese TF continue the "cat and mouse" game around Wellington (NZ). An E13A1 Jake bounced a small bomb off CA Australia, no significant damage. AAR and Situation map follows.

6th Indian Brigade now rebult to 100% TOE strength. 6 Brigade is the third of five Indian Brigades (along with 8 & 15 Brigades) evacuated as cadres from Singapore before its fall that are now again at full TOE strength. 12 and 18 Indian Brigades are still in progress of rebuilding in India from cadres. In addition, a Commonwealth infantry brigade (SSVF) was evacuated as a cadre from Singapore and is now rebuilding.

Central Pacific: No detected change in Jap activity around Kwajalein. U.S. subs in the area continue to report light Jap air patrols - a few contacts with G4M1 Bettys operating from Kwajalein and Canton Is, no reported contacts with Jap carrier planes or E13A1 Jakes.

What remains to be seen is whether this Japanese air patrol pattern continues - I do not anticipate Jap ASW air patrols going back to the large numbers of E13A1 Jakes and carrier planes (Kates & Vals) that have been seen previously. Pillager will be allocating more land-based aircraft in the Central Pacific theater to naval search rather than recon or ASW patrols. He won't leaving himself open to another surprise appearance from my carriers.

Elsewhere in the Central Pacific... only a Jap recon flight over Penhryn. Otherwise quiet.


South Pacific: Jap recon flight over Auckland. More fun and games off Wellington (NZ). AAR's and situation map follows. All the Jap PG/AP's in these reports appear to be large armed merchant "cruisers". Including today's action, Allied naval forces off New Zealand have claimed the following Japanese ships - 2 AV and 2 large PG/AP confirmed sunk, 1 large PG/AP heavily damaged (will probably sink), 3 other large PG/AP with light to moderate damage.

Catalina I recon over Port Moresby reported 5 Jap TF's, 4 ships disbanded in port, port damage 1, 138 aircraft (36 fighters, 30 bombers), 6 Jap LCU's.

Hudson I recon over Darwin reporting A6M2 fighters on CAP, no Jap TF in Darwin, otherwise no detected change in Jap activity or forces.
Hudson I recon over Exmouth also reporting no detected Jap activity or change in forces.


India/Burma: Jap recon flights over Myitkyina, Imphal, Chittagong.

Another small bombing raid by G3M Nells against Myitkyina, no damage or casualties on either side.

Catalina I recon over Rangoon reports one Jap TF (-2 from last report, TF has 3 BB), heavy industry 80(113), 185 aircraft (89 fighters), 10 Jap LCU's (no change).

Ther recent level of activity by Japanese ground and air forces in Burma has been (surprisingly) very low, especially considering the size of Jap forces in Burma (especially air) and Pillager's move in progress against Myitkyina. Could the Japs be grinding to a halt in Burma due to supply problems? If so, is the bombing campaign against Heavy Industry facilities in Rangoon a factor to cause Japanese supply problems in Burma? Maybe that heavy industry in Rangoon is the Japanese achilles' heel in Burma.


China: Jap recon flights over Chungking and Chengtu. Otherwise quiet.

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 116 days. A slow day at the office...

Central Pacific: Very light Jap air patrols around Kwajalein and Canton Is - small number of G4M Betty and Ki-49 Helens. One surface ASW attack against U.S. sub S-33 near Kwajalein - no hits or damage reported. Pillager has several ASW TF's (mainly DD's) chasing my subs in the Kwajalein area, no sign of the KB or major naval surface units.


South Pacific: Naval action off Wellington (NZ) is winding down. Japanese TF's are now E and SE of Auckland, moving on various northbound courses. That's just about as far as I'm pursuing. CL Adelaide is shortly returning to base for refuelling. The surface TF with BB Prince of Wales is continuing eastbound (on its original mission) for Panama City where it will pick up CV Victorius soon arriving in Panama City as a reinforcement. The TF with CV Victorius is then expected to return to the South Pacific theater.

Given Pillager's latest Japanese offensive against Myitkyina, the level of recent Japanese activity is unusually decreased both on the ground and in the air. Could this be due to Japanese supply problems, especially in the interior areas of Burma (outside of Rangoon)?

Central Pacific: Very light Jap air patrols continue around Kwajalein and Canton Is - small number of G4M Betty and Ki-49 Helens. One Jap surface ASW detected near Kwajalein. No sign of the KB or major naval surface units.

U.S. carrier TF's reached Palmyra to refuel and take on 48 replacement pilots to replace fighter pilots lost in air action near Kwajalein. With a total of 84 F4F's destroyed and 40 damaged in combat off Kwajalein, apparently some of the pilots from shot down or damaged aircraft were recovered.

Total reported Japanese air losses at Kwajalein were 92 aircraft destroyed (83 fighters, 9 bombers) and 50 damaged (49 fighters, 1 bomber). Only 7 of the destroyed/damaged Jap aircraft were LBA (all Ki-49 Helens), the other aircraft were all carrier types (A6M2, A6M3, A6M3a, Kates). All Japanese air losses were aircraft shot down over the U.S. task forces.

LB-30 Liberator on patrol spotted unidentified Jap TF southwest of Johnston Is. The Jap TF reported to be 1 ship (possible submarine).

Status: offline 		Seems like pilot training is a long, drawn out process (and probably really is). It's slow even at rear-area bases with plenty of supply including bases in the U.S. itself.

Just like to get some thoughts, ideas, suggestions on anything that can be done to make pilot training more efficient. Also, is there a maximum experience level up to which pilots can be trained before they have to be thrown into combat or some other front-line mission?

The other thing I'm noticing is that some but not all squadrons have their planes become damaged quickly when you set them on the training mission. This appears to occur only in fighter squadrons, and the cause of the problem is not related to location - it happens at large bases with ample supply on hand and even at bases in the U.S. Some squadrons at a base will have their planes become damaged while others at the same location do not. Fatigue level of the air squadron does not appear to be a factor either - planes in these squadrons become damaged much quicker than any increase in the squadron's fatigue level. Aviation support elements not it either, these bases all have more than sufficient numbers of elements to handle aviation support.

The only possiblity I can see right now is something with the squadron commander's leader ratings. Maybe that's it? Or something else?

I've been typically setting my air units at 50% while on training and standing them down whenever 1/2 or more of their aircraft become damaged.

India/Burma: Jap recon flights over Chittagong, Imphal, Myitkyina.

Lower-experienced RAF and AVG fighter squadrons have been on training missions during the time they've been pulled out of front-line service due to shortages of replacement Hurricane II and P-40E aircraft. Replacement pools for both fighter types are gradually refilling (the P-40E has a particularly slow rate of generating replacement aircraft). Plans are to keep these fighter squadrons training in rear-area bases until replacement aircraft pools for Hurricane II and P-40E are sufficient to adequately replace combat losses. This action affects nearly all Allied fighter squadrons in India and also some USAAF fighter squadrons now in Australia (evacuees from the Philippines). Estimated time before replacement pools sufficiently refill is between two weeks to a month (in game time). Replacement pools are now adequate for defensive purposes but my intent is to re-employ these fighters on offensive ops (i.e. sweeps) against front-line Jap airbases in Burma.

Voyages of the Argonaut: U.S. submarine Argonaut has arrived in Colombo after completing a 2-month trip across the Pacific and Indian Oceans from Pearl Harbor, dropping several minefields in various Jap bases along its route. The Argonaut is undergoing a brief refit to repair minor system damage before starting minelaying ops against Rangoon, Singapore, and selected Jap-controlled bases in the DEI.

Central Pacific: Very light Jap air patrol activity reported again by U.S. subs near Kwajalein. U.S. sub Sargo on patrol near Kwajalein attacked by Jap ASW TF (5 DD's) - no hits or damage reported.

CL Trenton sunk in naval air attack by G4M Betty bombers near Canton Is. Trenton was on a mission to probe Japanese outer perimeter defenses, specifically to test coverage (or lack thereof) of Jap naval search air patrols. CL Trenton inadvertently strayed a bit too close to Canton and lingered a bit too long when it was hit by the Betty attack. Moral of this story... don't let your ships sail into enemy controlled areas without proper supervision.

North Pacific: Jap attacks on Adak continue - carrier air strikes, also bombardment from Jap surface TF. AAR's follow.

Current base status in Adak - port damage 44, airfield (service damage 41, runway damage 99). Some additional damage in today's attacks though not as severe as initial attacks on 1/30.

All heavily damaged ships remaining in Adak after initial attacks (see Adak base port display from the 1/30 game turn reports) were sunk in today's game turn either from additional damage in today's attacks or the result of ship damage adjustment phases during game turn resolution. With the exception of the two AS's and one PC (where serious effort to save & repair them were feasible), the majority of the ships would most likely have sunk anyway in game turn damage adjustment phases.

You make a good point and raise a good question... Don't really have an answer one way or the other given the current overall situation and what is known about the disposition of Japanese forces. There are some factors though that could have an influence.

1) Unlike 1942, the Japanese do not have an +200 AV (amphibious value) invasion bonus for this period in 1943. While this doesn't mean Pillager can obtain AV through other means (i.e. using ship types that provide an AV), many of the ship types that do provide an AV probably lack the range to reach the Aleutians without exposing themselves to risk of attack. Oddly enough, I will be facing a similar dilemma with U.S. amphibious operations until AGC's and Amphibious Force HQ's become available.

2) Distance. The closest bases to the Aleutions that Pillager has available to launch an invasion from include Wake, Marcus, and the Japanese Home Islands. Travel from any of these locations to any invasion site in the Aleutians would require covering a fairly long distance along with the time needed to cover this distance. A large part of the route travelled by any Japanese invasion fleet is open to attack by U.S. naval forces from its southern flank.

3) All the larger island bases in the Aleutians (Kiska, Attu, Amchitka, Adak, Dutch Harbor) are occupied in strength by U.S. ground forces - at least one RCT if not more in each location. Construction of base facilities and fortifications has been underway since mid-1942 and has continued through the winter months (however slowly). Each of these bases also has a considerable quantity of supply on hand (minimum 10-15 K, some cases much more). A continuous stream of LCU's and supply has been moving from the U.S. and Canadian bases into this area.

While a northern strategy is not a priority, I have also not excluded it. The buildup in the Aleutians was done to support any operations from the North Pacific if an opportunity presented itself. It also provided useful employment for the swarms of "North Pacific" Seabees and U.S. Army RCT's arriving as reinforcements.

4) Does Pillager have INF and other combat LCU's to invade the Aleutians with? Maybe and maybe not... Maybe not in the sense that Pillager has many LCU committed to garrisoning the Central and South Pacific front, including the vast "South Pacific holdings" that the Japanese did not historically capture (such places as Canton Is, Pago Pago, Fiji, Noumea, Port Moresby, etc). Also consider the fact that Pillager is constructing bases on many smaller South Pacific islands and atolls to aid in defending these locations. And then there's all the LCU that Pillager has dumped into Australia.

However, I don't exclude "maybe" either. Going back to my reports in late 11/42, Pillager did withdraw many front-line Japanese combat LCU's in China and a smaller number of LCU's from the Kwantung Army. Many of these LCU's were last seen in or moving towards Shanghai or Canton. These LCU did not disappear into a vacuum, they went someplace. Several of these LCU's have already re-appeared in interesting places (i.e Sigint report from 12/25/42 showing 2nd Mongolian Cavalry Division is located at Saipan, etc). It would be little or no surprise that more Jap LCU's from China and Manchuria will be encountered elsewhere in the Pacific.



In a way, I would not mind seeing Pillager make such a move on the Aleutians. An "Arctic Midway" would fit well into my scheme of things. Capturing or holding real estate is not the major Allied priority in 1943, attrition and destruction of Japanese forces is (with the KB as target #1). That was the premise behind my aborted raid on Kwajalein two weeks ago, it would also be the main objective behind intercepting a Jap move towards the Aleutians if Pillager was to do so. Send the KB to the bottom first... the invasion can land in the Aleutians (and rot there) for all I care.

U.S. carrier TF's now returning to Pearl Harbor, they had been patrolling an area SW of Johnston Is on 1/30-1/31 to intercept and ambush what turned out to be a false contact of a possible Jap surface TF heading for Palmyra. The contact in question was a Jap surface ASW attack on a U.S. sub near Wotje - the ships in this TF were moving on a SE heading at the time of contact.

North Pacific: Contact lost with Jap naval forces SW of the Aleutians.

Base repair activity continues in Adak. Current damage status of Adak - port damage 41; airfield service damage 44, runway damage 46 (down from 84).


Central Pacific: U.S. carrier TF's now back in Pearl Harbor (returning from the area SW of Johnston Is) - rotating fresh DD's from ships at anchor into the TF's, replacing some escort DD's in the carrier TF's with the heaviest system damage (these DD's all having 4-8 system damage). DD's being rotated out of the carrier TF's are going into the shipyards at Pearl for refit. Air groups aboard the CV's are back to full TOE strength.

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 102 days. Not much happening at the office...

North Pacific: Base repair activity in Adak continues - port damage 41; airfield service damage 41, runway damage 35 (down from 46).


Central Pacific: PBY Catalina patrol reported Jap submarine WNW of Palmyra, heading unknown. ASW TF's being formed at Palmyra to engage.

U.S. carrier TF's remain at Pearl to refit as many ships with light sys damage as possible before going back out again. The U.S. raid on Kwajalein was a nice opportunity (though a blown one), there will be others. Pillager's raid on Adak indicates the KB will come out to play - just have to strike at a time and place where he doesn't want it to happen. Patience just as important in 1943 as it was in '42. My carriers will get another opening to attack, only a matter of when and where.

U.S. subs reporting light Jap air patrol activity. SS Gar at Pago Pago reporting Kate (land based?), G3M Nell, and E13A1 Jake patrols.


South Pacific: Jap recon flight over Auckland, otherwise quiet.


Australia: No ground or air combat to report. Jap recon flight over Tennant Creek.
