Alright, I know some people hated the original WaW battle screens, but I for one liked watching my little army shoot up (or get shot up by) the enemy. Is there no more option to watch the detailed battles?

Nope. The battle animation was discontinued in this World Divided version. The formula and code for resolving battles has changed so much that it can't be reinstated. I do sometimes wish there was a way to see the battle unfold (even just with the die rolls) before knowing the final outcome, but that's the way it is.

The detailed option shows the die rolls and all modifiers but there's no such thing on hex map like in FoF but that's a good thing. Such system would take a dozen years to develop and i still question the ability of the AI to employ winning tactics (without cheating) in those systems. It's basically easier to program a chess program and i approve 2by3's choice on this subject in the design.

We came up with a system in War Between the States that allows people to view the combat in process and generates some suspense (without all the cheesy graphics that we got complaints about). I wish we had come up with that idea for World at War. Maybe Brian will decide it's such a great system that he wants to try to mimic it in a future AWD patch (but that's a lot to ask of him). At least we learned from our past games and think WBTS has the right system in place.

Could you point to a screenshot with this "combat in progress view"? I had a look at the WBTS stuff, but couldn't figure out what it is.

Thanks! It's not looking that impressive on a static picture, but I figure it'll give you the information you want - and a little suspense.

Ha ha, good joke :).

Personally, the only opinion I ever had on the feature was "not worth spending programming time on it." I didn't care that it was there except that I knew it meant that programming time was not being spent on other things I considered more worthwhile ...

I'm afraid I'm not the one to resurrect it.

I understand Brian's feelings about not being worth the programming time. Actually, the new system, which is not all that "sexy", does add a needed element of suspense that is missing for those key battles where it's not clear who's going to win. This happens more in WBTS than in WaW/AWD though given the reaction rules in WBTS. Most attacks in WBTS fail, and that means there's a lot more suspense. The overwhelming majority of land attacks in AWD are a success so it's less important. Believe me, I wish we had thought of the WBTS system when we first did WaW and AWD. Live and learn.
