Very well may be something to what Alfred said... Though compared to early and mid-1942 in the South Pacific, I actually have the means to defend the Aleutians against a Japanese move. I have no objection to Pillager sailing into an "Arctic Midway" - let the game come to you, then play it.

Repair of base facilities continue in Adak - port damage still 44, airfield service damage 13, runway damage 0. Once this is repaired, Adak is again fully operational as a base.

Transport convoys have departed the U.S. for the Aleutians with whatever LCU reinforcements, supply, and fuel that can reach their destinations before 3/1/43. Also allowing time for these transports to get out of the area. If Pillager is coming, I want the decks cleared.

Central Pacific: U.S. submarines reporting Jap air patrols quiet near Kwajalein, light air patrols around Pago Pago and Canton Is.

Several sites are being considered for activating an advanced base for U.S. carrier ops - locations considered are looking at the possiblilty of an "Arctic Midway" in mind without over-committing to the North Pacific. U.S. carrier TF's remain at Pearl Harbor refitting as many escort ships as can be done within the next 7-10 days. Refits on CV's and larger escorts (BB's, cruisers) are being held off until the 4/43 upgrade. Refit activity being done with the possibility of combat activity in late Feb or sometime in March '43. Short term planning is emphasizing a possible "Arctic Midway" sometime in 3/43.

Sigint report of 2/5 includes entry indicating Jap 6 Naval Construction Bn located on Marcus Is. 6 Naval Const Bn was transferred to Marcus from Takao.

Jap recon flight over Penhryn.

Summary of Operations 2/6/43

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 100 days.

North Pacific: Airfield damage in Adak base fully repaired - still 41 port damage.

Central Pacific: U.S. submarines continue reporting very light Jap air patrol activity. Otherwise quiet.

Several bases in the Central and North Pacific areas (all port size = 3 or larger) now being prepared as staging locations for U.S. carrier ops if needed. All of these locations having sufficient fuel and supply on hand to replenish carrier TF's, also capable of flying naval search aircraft and as emergency refuge for damaged ships. These bases also in (slightly out of the way) locations less than obvious to Japanese eyes and ears.

South Pacific: Jap recon flight over Auckland, otherwise quiet.

Australia: Jap recon flight and bombing raid (airfield strike) on Tennant Creek. AAR follows. With the shortage of replacement P-40E & Hurricane II fighters, I had to strip several front-line locations including Tennant Creek of all fighter cover. This will change shortly.

Southeast Asia: Entry from Sigint report for 2/6 indicates 150 IJN Base Force located in Kota Bharu - this unit appearing for the first time in the Japanese OOB.

India/Burma: My "mass air attack" on Magwe continues - rather than the simultaneous attacks originally planned, these attacks are going in one or two at a time (just the way the bomb bounces). Still not a bad day's hunting when all is said and done. AAR's follow.

Allied fighter squadrons enroute to Tennant Creek continue repairing planes in Alice Springs. Transfer of these squadrons to Alice Springs rather than Tennant Creek was done given the fact that transfer of fighter planes from southern Australia to either Tennant Creek or Alice Springs would occur by rail, automatically placing all planes in these squadrons in damaged status. Alice Springs was chosen as squadrons could repair their planes undetected and also beyond range of Japanese air attack. Unforturnately, Alice Springs has only 2-3 K supply points on hand making repairs a slow process. Tennant Creek has nearly 60K supply on hand and two Dakota I transport squadrons allowing airlift of supply into Alice Springs.

Hudson I recon over Darwin reporting A6M2 fighters on CAP, no detected activity or change in Jap forces.
Hudson I recon over Exmouth reports A6M3a fighters on CAP, 74 aircraft (3 fighters, 33 bombers), 5 Jap LCU's.

DEI: Several U.S. subs operating in the area - no report of any contacts or attacks.

India/Burma: Royal Navy carrier TF (CV Illustrious, CVL Hermes) sailed into a nest of G4M Bettys southeast of Port Blair while attempting to interdict Jap merchant shipping off Thailand. Both carriers took multiple attacks and heavily damaged. AAR's and situation map follows.

Current damage status (system/flood/fire) of carriers - CV Illustrious (33/80/49) moving @ 6 kts, CVL Hermes (85/40/46) moving at 3 kts.

Some aircraft from both carriers landed at Port Blair. Undamaged planes from the carriers transferred to Trincomalee, damaged aircraft (12 planes total) remain at Port Blair and will have to be taken off later by ship as no aviation support is available in Port Blair to repair them.

Summary of Operations 2/9/43 part deux.

India/Burma (continued): Jap recon flights over Myitkyina, Imphal, Chittagong.

U.S. sub Argonaut reached Rangoon, successfully laid mines, now returning to base.

Hudson I recon over Rangoon reported 1 Jap TF (-2 from last report), 152 aircraft (48 fighters, 19 bombers), heavy industry 57(136), 10 Jap LCU's. Pillager is making some effort to repair damaged heavy industry facilities in Rangoon.

Several entries from Sigint report of 2/9...

41 Heavy AA Bn located in hex 33,30. Previous location of 41 AA Battalion was Mandalay on 1/17. This is likely the unidentified Jap LCU detected in this area on 2/8. This was confirmed by the following Chinese Il-4 bombing attack.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 41st Heavy AA Battalion, at 33,30

Allied aircraft
IL-4c x 3

Allied aircraft losses
IL-4c: 1 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
11 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x IL-4c bombing at 10000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Movement of 41 AA Battalion is southward rather than northward as first estimated. With the earlier detected movement of 3 Light AA Bn into Rangoon on 2/7, it is possible that Pillager is reinforcing flak defenses in Rangoon to counter 4E bomber attacks.

A second Sigint entry for 2/9 reports HQ Jap 15th Army pulled out of the Myitkyina base hex - new location hex 35,28.

Air bombing attacks at Myitkyina by both Allied and Japanese forces. AAR's follow.

View of the Big Picture #9

So much for the "soft underbelly of Burma" theory... The recent carrier debacle off Port Blair amply demonstrated that.

Plans had been considered to launch an amphibious invasion in this area. No exact time for this offensive had been set (it definately had not been planned for the near future) but Moulmein was set as the probable projected landing site.

Possible initial landing and follow up forces in this move would have centered around three U.S. divisions (7th, 40th, 41st) and at least one U.S. Corps HQ transferred from the U.S. West Coast to Southeast Asia command (this is why I have 10K political points lying around) with MacArthur in overall command from HQ USAFFE (already in India). Other LCU's available to reinforce this offensive included fully rebuilt LCU's evacuated from Singapore (6th, 8th, 12th, 15th, 28th Indian and SSAF Brigades) as well as other LCU's now occupying defensive positions at various locations in India and Ceylon (including 7th Australian Div, 18th British Div, several more Indian Brigades, plus other units).

Following initial landing at Moulmein, parts of this force would have deployed to take Tavoy and Rahaeng as blocking positions against Japanese relief attacks from Thailand and Indochina. Objective of the main force would have been capture of Rangoon from the rear, followed by a roll-up of Japanese forces in Burma from south to north. Supporting movement of Allied ground forces into Burma from Imphal and possibly Chittagong was projected to be the "anvil".

Main intent of this plan was the encirclement and complete destruction of all Japanese forces in Burma (particularly ground forces), liberation of Burmese territory a distant second on the agenda.

At least for now, there is not a soft underbelly to Burma. Better two carriers than an invasion force. While I have not totally cancelled this operation, it's back on the shelf for some time in the (now) more-distant future.

Prior to Jap attacks, RAF Hurricane squadrons based at Imphal had transferred out to rear-area bases to recover damaged aircraft and rest pilots. While this practice occasionally leaves forward airbases undefended, it also leaves the Japs hitting an "empty bag". Airfield damage is easily repaired.

What has been implemented in the India/Burma theater is a two-layer system of air bases.

(1) Forward airfields from which combat missions are launched. These airfields only requiring the capability to receive aircraft moving up from the rear to attack and to launch the actual attack itself. Only limited recovery of damaged aircraft returning from combat missions is done at forward airfields, most damaged aircraft recovered in rear-area bases.

(2) A network of designated rear-area bases to which front-line squadrons are transferred back to once depleted from combat mission(s). These rear-area bases are set up with HQ, aviation support elements, and large stocks of supply sufficient to quickly get both planes and pilots in a squadron fully operational and accomplish this without interference from enemy attack. The criteria I've used to determine an air squadron's depletion is 50% or more damaged aircraft and/or a significant pilot fatigue level. Location of rear-area bases is such that squadrons can easily transfer to them from forward airfields (operational planes in a squadron flying, damaged planes moved separately by rail in the same game turn). Rear-area bases are also beyond the reach of possible Jap air or naval bombardment attack.

The two-layer system as operating now is capable of bringing a depleted squadron to full operational status (all planes undamaged, zero pilot fatigue level) within 3-5 days after transfer to the rear, using few or no replacements from the pool. The rear-area base network in India is now capable of handling 12-15 squadrons (either fighters or bombers) at a time on a continuous basis. What started as an experiment will in time become an assembly line.

Back to the war... Jap air bombing attack (ground strike) on Myitkyina, light casualties reported.

Two Jap bombing attacks launched on Port Blair. No report of damage or casualties.

Hudson I recon over Rangoon reporting 2 Jap TF's (+2 from last report), heavy industry 51(142), 133 aircraft (43 fighters, 25 bombers), 10 Jap LCU's.

CVL Hermes still afloat S of Port Blair and drifting towards Trincomalee with the tide - damage 99/89/2 (sys/flood/fire). In the very unlikely event it drifts all the way back to Trincomalee, a urban legend may be in the making.

China: Jap recon flights over Pakhoi, Chungking, Tuyun, Chengtu, Liuchow. Jap bombing raid on Liuchow.

No mention of deployment of HQ to forward AF, only to rear area AF.  Air HQ provide combat benefits if forward deployed (or at least their command radius if it reaches forward AF) - more beneficial than any recovery benefits IMHO.

Alfred,

Appreciate your reply and a correction on my part is also due... After going back and examining further, I have three RAF Air HQ's scattered across bases in NE India and HQ U.S. 10th Air Force is also moving into this area to help out. Most every Allied air base in NE India (both forward and rear-area) is within command radius of one or more of these Air HQ's. If I'm correct, nearly all Allied air operations in the NE India theater (both combat missions and "recovery" of air units at rear-area bases) should be receiving support from at least one Air HQ.

I have no idea (seen nothing on this) whether two or more Air HQ's can combine support for air unit(s) flying a combat mission, repairing damaged aircraft, recovering pilot fatigue/morale levels, etc. If such an effect from multiple HQ exists, my situation in NE India would certainly apply.

Summary of Operations 2/14/43

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 92 days.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jap recon flight over Penhryn Is, quiet elsewhere.

South Pacific: Jap recon flights over Norfolk Is and Auckland, otherwise quiet.

Australia: Jap recon flight and air bombing raid on Tennant Creek - light damage reported. AAR follows.

Recent Japanese air attacks on Tennant Creek have resulted in only light damage to airfield facilities that is quickly repaired. While very few Allied planes in Tennant Creek have been destroyed by Jap attacks, the Jap raids are continuously damaging significant numbers of planes on the ground.

A factor behind the current situation in Tennant Creek has been lack of fighter cover (CAP) over the base - this due largely to the recent shortage of replacement P-40E planes in the pool. Four USAAF fighter squadrons (all P-40E) had been based in Tennant Creek, three of the four squadrons were transferred out of Tennant Creek to rear-area bases in southern Australia when the number of P-40E's in the replacement pool were almost exhausted.

Allied fighter squadrons are returning to Tennant Creek from bases in southern Australia - the 3 USAAF P-40E squadrons transferred out earlier, plus four RAAF fighter squadrons equipped with Kittyhawks and Hurricane II's. These squadrons now in Alice Springs reparing damaged aircraft (transfer to Alice Springs from southern Australia bases was by rail) and are expected to fly into Tennant Creek within the next 2-4 days.

Even with the return of USAAF P-40E squadrons, supplies of P-40E replacement planes in the pool remain tight. Main users of P-40E's (outside the U.S.) are USAAF squadrons in Australia and the AVG now operating from NE India.

It is also unclear if prepping those AF HQ's for a particular target, like Mandalay, is beneficial to your combat results.

NY59Giants,

As far as setting objectives for my air HQ's, I set assigned objective for these HQ's generally to the base where they are located. I set air HQ objectives this way as a "default" since I didn't see anything in the rules or elsewhere on the effects of assigning air HQ's to specific objectives. I figured I could do no wrong (and perhaps nothing right either) by setting an air HQ's objective to the base it is located at.

Since air HQ's have an objective like any other LCU, might as well set the objective to something even if there's no known point in setting it to anything.

NY59Giants,

I posted a series of situation map screen shots following the 2/12 Operations Summary displaying Japanese controlled areas along an arc from Marcus Is in the north through Fiji in the south. These maps showing detected or known port and airfield sizes for Japanese bases, also locations of known Jap LCU's.

I will have to put together a similar map of Noumea/Solomons/New Guinea area, also maps of Allied positions in Central and South Pacific area.

I've actually been a straggling a little (3 days behind) with AAR reports, need to catch up on those too.

Summary of Operations 2/17/43, the "It's too damn quiet around here" edition

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 89 days.

Central Pacific: Generally quiet. U.S. subs again reporting light Jap air patrols.

A group of 5-6 U.S. subs are now operating in the Marshalls - around Kwajalein though not in close proximity.

I'm beginning changes on U.S. sub movement in the Central and South Pacific areas - scaling down (though not completely eliminating) surveillance of Kwajalein, Canton, and Pago Pago that I had concentrated on thru 1942. More subs at a time will be operating, subs are also moving through Jap bases on other islands to detect activity Pillager may have going on in these bases and attack Jap ships as possible.

A group of U.S. subs have also departed Pearl Harbor some days ago enroute to a patrol area south of the Japanese home islands.

Game turn replay for 2/16 indicated Jap AK Yuki Maru sunk near Marcus Is. Yuki Maru struck a mine at Kwajalein on 2/7.

Jap recon flight over Penhryn.

South Pacific: Jap recon flight over Norfolk Is, otherwise quiet.

Summary of Operations 2/19/43

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 87 days.

Central Pacific: U.S. subs reporting more Jap air patrols - including Jap carrier planes and Ki-49 Helens in the Kwajalein area, G4M Betty flights at both Kwajalein and Canton Is.

SS Grouper at Gardner Is (near Canton) reporting contact with 3 Jap TF's. Pillager has 12 LCU's on Gardner Is (nearly all construction engineers). It's possible that Pillager is having a slow time with construction efforts on Gardner similar to my experience with U.S. Seabees building base facilities on Jarvis Is (Gardner and Jarvis Islands are both dot hexes).

Jap recon flight over Penhryn.

South Pacific: Jap recon flight over Auckland, otherwise quiet.

U.S. base at Papaete (Society Is) now operational as a refuelling stop for shipping between the U.S. and Australia/NZ. One U.S. patrol squadron (12 PBY's) is flying naval search from Papaete supported by an AVD. A U.S. base force LCU is enroute to Papaete along with additional fuel and supply. Papaete now has size 2 port, size 3 airfield facilities with construction still underway.

Australia: Jap recon flight and bombing raid on Tennant Creek, AAR follows. USAAF and RAAF fighter squadrons repairing aircraft in Alice Springs now fully operational and transferring into Tennant Creek for the 2/20 game turn. Again, no damage shown at Tennant Creek airfield.

Catalina I recon over Port Moresby reporting fighters on CAP (A6M3a, Ki-61, Ki-45); 1 Jap TF (-2 from last report), 2 ships disbanded in port, airfield damage 20, 88 aircraft (39 fighters), 6 Jap LCU's.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Operating RAF Hurricane squadrons in large numbers have had some success - primary intent of this tactic being more of a "mass combat training exercise" rather than an Uber CAP or Uber sweep. The main success here has been training large numbers of RAF fighter pilots with relatively small combat losses, basic "safety in numbers".

USAAF and RAF Liberators again bomb heavy industry facilties in Rangoon. AAR follows. It's beginning to appear these attacks could be affecting Pillager's supply chain to front-line Jap forces in interior areas of Burma.

View of the Big Picture #10 - U.S. eastern Pacific front

With the capture of Canton, Samoa, Fija, and Noumea by Japanese forces in early and mid-1942, the primary (historical) Allied route of communication between the U.S. and Australia/NZ was completely erased. This situation left all major base locations in the southern Pacific under Japanese control and only Penhryn, the Society Islands, and several other small bases remaining in Allied hands. None of the bases still under Allied control in the southern Pacific were occupied with significant air/ground forces nor had any significant stocks of fuel or supply on hand. With no bases in the southern Pacific capable of supporting Allied LBA or naval forces, any form of Allied transport shipping moving westbound from Panama City or the Line Islands, or eastbound from New Zealand would be unescorted, uncovered, and subject to Japanese attack with no warning. Except for single-ship TF's moving independently via the Panama City sea channels and the southern map edge, virtually no sea communication existed between the U.S. and Australia/NZ throughout 1942.

One end result of the strategic situation in this region was the South Pacific theater as it historically existed was not a "going" entity. HQ South Pacific entered the game stranded in Auckland with virtually no units to command, and virtually no way of transporting South Pacific command reinforcements arriving in the U.S. to reach bases in or near the historical theater area without a high risk of unopposed Japanese interception.

With all U.S. land and air reinforcement for South Pacific command "backed up" at bases in the eastern Pacific or on the U.S. west coast, the decision was made to move HQ South Pacific out of Auckland and transport it eastward across the Pacific to join the "backed up" air and ground forces under its command. HQ South Pacific was transported in fragments during the summer of 1942 from Auckland via Panama City and Los Angeles (recover elements disrupted in transport and re-unite the HQ as a single LCU) to its current location at Palmyra.

In a similar manner, many of the air and ground reinforcements belonging to SW Pacific also "backed up" in the eastern Pacific and on the U.S. west coast.

With HQ South Pacific deployed to Palmyra, a new theater was formed to start out of the Line Islands area to operate side-by-side with the Central Pacific theater along that theater's southern flank. Forces in the new theater include the "backed up" air and ground units of South and SW Pacific combined under South Pacific HQ.

Approximately 80-90% or more of all U.S. forces beginning the game in the eastern Pacific or the U.S west coast, or arriving as reinforcements in the U.S. since 12/41, have concentrated in an area between the Hawaiian and Line Islands. While it makes future developments a bit more obvious for Pillager, I do have the advantage of operating on "interior lines".

The map below displays current geographic command areas in the eastern Pacific.

Summary of Operations 2/20/43

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 86 days.

North Pacific: Preparations for a possible Japanese spring attack in the Aleutians underway.

Transports with air and LCU reinforcements, supply and fuel points arriving at various U.S. bases in the Aleutians. Cargoes include 4700 supply at Kiska, 159 RCT and 8K supply at Amchitka, 56 US Coast Artillery and 4500 supply at Adak.

Central Pacific: U.S. subs continue reporting Jap air patrols - Jap carrier planes and Ki-49 Helens in the Kwajalein area, G4M Betty flights at both Kwajalein and Canton Is.

U.S. sub patrols scouting various Jap bases in the Marshall Islands. SS Spearfish scouted Eniwetok - detected base size (airfield = 2, port = 3), no detected Jap activity. Unidentified Jap TF (6 ships, moving on unknown heading) spotted S of Eniwetok by SS Sculpin, no reported sub or ASW attack. SS Dolphin scouting Wotje - detected airfield size = 3, no detected Jap activity.

Summary of Operations 2/21/43

Countdown to CV Essex arrival: 85 days.

CVL Independence (reinforcement) arrived on U.S. west coast from Panama City.

Central Pacific: Reports from U.S. subs indicating contacts with Jap air patrols continue at Kwajalein, quiet at Canton and Pago Pago. Jap patrol flights from Kwajalein include G4M Betty, Ki-49 Helen, and carrier-based aircraft (Vals & Kates). It appears that Pillager has kept at least part of the KB in Kwajalein. While it is very unlikely that a second attempt to hit the KB at anchor in Kwajalein by surprise attack is possible, the situation continues to be watched. If there is a second chance, it will be taken.

AAR of action near Kwajalein follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 78,82

Japanese Ships
DD Teruzuki, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Oite
DD Kamikaze
DD Mochizuki
DD Minazuki
DD Uzuki
DD Mutsuki
DD Akizuki

Allied Ships
SS Sculpin

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Jap recon flight over Penhryn.

South Pacific: Jap recon flight over Auckland, otherwise quiet. My estimate is that the South Pacific theater has relatively few forces on either side. Pillager may or may not be doing this by design, I have virtually no large, usable base outside of New Zealand to build up Allied forces within striking range of Japanese controlled bases in the South Pacific without Jap detection. I exclude Auckland as a usable base for major operations because Pillager would detect and move to counter any Allied build up quickly (almost daily Jap recon flights over Auckland) long before any Allied move against Noumea, Fiji, or the Solomons could be put together.

Australia: Jap recon flight over Tennant Creek. RAAF and USAAF Hudson I bombers strike Port Moresby. AAR follows.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Port Moresby , at 54,93

Japanese aircraft
A6M3a Zero x 29
Ki-45 KAIb Nick x 6
Ki-61-Ib Tony x 5

Allied aircraft
Catalina I x 4
Hudson I x 23

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M3a Zero: 9 damaged
Ki-61-Ib Tony: 1 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Catalina I: 1 damaged
Hudson I: 8 destroyed, 7 damaged (actual destroyed count lower)

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x Hudson I bombing at 10000 feet
1 x Hudson I bombing at 10000 feet
2 x Hudson I bombing at 10000 feet
2 x Hudson I bombing at 10000 feet
2 x Hudson I bombing at 10000 feet
3 x Hudson I bombing at 10000 feet
2 x Hudson I bombing at 10000 feet
2 x Hudson I bombing at 10000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Recon over Port Moresby reporting 5 Jap TF's (+1 from last report), 1 disbanded ship in port, airfield damage 18, 79 aircraft (38 fighters), 6 Jap LCU's.

Hudson I recon flight over Exmouth reporting no detected activity or change in Jap forces. U.S. submarine Shad enroute from Perth to patrol area in the DEI reported contact with G4M Betty flight off Exmouth.

Philippines: Sigint report entry for 2/21 indicating Jap 21 Engineer Rgt now in Legaspi. Previous location of 21 Engineers was at Darwin on 8/9/42.

Malacca Straits: U.S. sub Argonaut attacked and hit by G5M Liz in the Malacca Straits near Kuala Lumpur while on a minelaying mission to Singapore. SS Argonaut received moderate damage (33/33 system & float). Argonaut has changed the target of its minelaying mission to Kuala Lumpur, then return to base in India for repairs. An unknown number of Jap ships were detected at anchor in Kuala Lumpur - possible base for Jap surface ASW ships Pillager is occasionally operating against Allied subs in the Malacca Straits.

India/Burma: Jap recon flights over Imphal and Myitkyina. Jap bombing raid on Port Blair - AAR follows. Otherwise no air or ground combat actions in Burma or NE India.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Port Blair , at 23,34

Japanese aircraft
G3M Nell x 13
Ki-45 KAIb Nick x 6

No Japanese losses

Airbase hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x G3M Nell bombing at 6000 feet
3 x G3M Nell bombing at 6000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dutch sub O-23 reports spotting two Jap TF's off Rangoon, no combat reported.

Detected status of Jap base in Rangoon - 1 Jap TF, heavy industry 40(153), 229 aircraft (86 fighters, 30 bombers), 10 Jap LCU's. Pillager appears to be attempting to repair heavy industry damage in Rangoon - I plan to continue bombing it.

China: Jap recon flights over Chungking, Tuyun, Sining, Liuchow. Otherwise quiet.
