I see we're discussing war movies. Heres my 2 cents.

WW2
1) Saving Pvt. Ryan
2) The Longest Day
3) Tora Tora Tora

Other Wars
1) Master and Commander
2) The Four Feathers (1939, not the more recent piece)
3) Beau Geste
4) Zulu

I would also add some Russian titles that if you guys can find with subtitles (scorn dubbing)I suggest you take a chance to watch.

I would rate this movie my second favorite overall. Its actually a 3-part miniseries on the sacrifice of an infantry regiment for the purpose of diverting enemy forces from the the real point of attack. Amazing book by Yury Bondarev, who was himself an artillery officer during the war, very faithfully transferred to film.

Somehow a comedy, a tragedy and a love story involving the members of a fighter squadron. Written and directed by Leonid Bikov and filmed on a tight budget, one of the best-loved Soviet films, very short on special effects and combat footage but very long on meaning, dialog and quotable lines.

A young replacement nicknamed Grasshopper who was previously grounded for crash landing during a training flight hops into the squadron commander's bird during an air raid and brings down a 109. In the next scene the regimental commander, who thinks that the squadron commander went up comes to congratulate him only to be told that it was the guy that got grounded.

Regt. Com: Did you shoot him down?
Grasshopper: Affirmative, sir. I think I could have shot down another one, but the sight of your undershirt had scared all the Germans away.

In the next scene (they go to visit the ladies at the night bomber squadron next door) there is a great monologue by the squad. com. in response to Grasshopper voicing the opinion that love must invariable conquer all.

Squad. Com. Titarenko: "...from Brest to Stalingrad, with love. Then from Stalingrad here...with love. I can fly that route for the rest of my days without a map, just following the graves of our boys from 2nd squadron....and when this war is over...in Berlin, I will climb to the highest surviving wall and with the deepest love write "I am satisfied by the ruins of the Reichstag"....and then I'm done."

The song is an old Ukranian folk live song. When the words in the song say (a man singing to a woman) "I will carry you in my hands all the way home" the shot cuts to a shot of a battlefield nurse carrying a wounded soldier. Absurdity of war....

Some of the best scenes in the movie. Its both funny, profound and does not end well.

Only saw it a couple of times but I remember it being hilarious.

A cult series over here for people who were raised on this hmmm piece of acting connected with war.

I must admit that I have seen the whole series, did not impress and was a little propaganda like in a symbolic scene where if I remember correctly a soviet soldier dies while trying to shoot down a stuka with his rifle. However it was a great adventure series and there are some parts of the movie which are hard to understand if not being Polish.

I am a charter member of the "I Hated 'Saving Private Ryan' Club." Please don't ask me why, as every time I express a serious opinion around here, some hamsterhead makes free to climb my frame. Let's just say that I see SPR as being a self-important, self-indulgent film that has about as much value for me as a lost book of the New Testament that focuses on how the Apostles treated athlete's foot.

I like to peruse Russian film, as well. Lot of good viewing there.

What did you think of the A&E "Hornblower" series with Ioan Gruffud? This guy needs to rethink his name, and I was a little put off by the gayness, but I thought it excellent. Even bought it.
