Just got done cleaning out a water damaged closet. YUK. This closet is on the wall adjacent to the bath tub that rusted through.

Ah, the water closet. An unpleasant, but necessary place. I remember I thought mine was in good shape until I looked down at the corner of the tub one day and saw a mushroom growing out of it...

Great project that was...

Pasternakski, feel free to express your opinion any time. I for one won't jump all over you.

Bruce, old scout, thank you for that, and I'm trying to stop saying things that have an abrasive effect.

I have come to realize that what I think is funny sometimes provokes jihad - and I fill the role of infidel.

Speaking of infidels, how's Castro doing these days? There was a lot of media commentary on the state of his health a few months back, and lately, we haven't heard anything.

I guess maybe he's been Raouled out by now, huh?

It looks that way. He's only been seen in public a couple of times.

As you say, he's being Raouled over

At least he hasn't been Castroted ... as far as we know.

It'ds be a shame, too, seeing as how he was a ball player.

I loved it personally. Wish they would finish the series. As for the gayness thing, I suspect British men-o-war weren't exactly bastions of heterosexuality.

Yeah, I agree, but they spent so much time trotting out old Iaon with no shirt and hosing him down and exchanging longing gazes with his "shipmates" and...

You know. Not that there's anything wrong with that, of course...

Pas, around here, everyone is free to express their opinion. We generally prefer to keep politics and religion out of the discussion, but opnions about movies are hardly contoversial.

Now, if you start in on the debate about Bismark being sunk or scuttled, all bets are off.

I like to peruse Russian film, as well. Lot of good viewing there.

What did you think of the A&E "Hornblower" series with Ioan Gruffud? This guy needs to rethink his name, and I was a little put off by the gayness, but I thought it excellent. Even bought it.

Didnt see it, unfortunately. Nor have I read the books. I take it that its worth a try?

The more you say the more I'm convinced of your Jaime Hyneman relation. Apparently the guy was a Russian literature study before he went off to be a diving instructor, or somesuch. Dont ask me how the two, or movie spec effects that he took up later, go together.

Spent the last few hours watching some of the more recent Russian movies on a feed site. I'm glad to see that Russian cinematography is beginning to recover somewhat after the binge of gratuitous sex, failed attempts at being Hollywood and other comparable drek that they indulged in from the mid 90s.

This mini-series called "Storm Gates" is pretty darn good despite borrowing heavily from US Vietnam themed films. Its a story of a platoon in Chechnya being stuck atop a hill with predictable results. I do have to say, at the risk of having folks blow a gasket, that that war was, if possible, more painful for them than Vietnam was for us. In essence they were fighting their own people.

If PO'B is to be believed, that, along with buggery was a hanging offense. The impression I get is that people generally knew about it but took it in stride, as long as they dint get bothered.

There are fairly frequent showings of a Soviet era film on one of the local access channels here in the UK.  Battleship Potemkin IIRC.

That's not the kind of movie I meant.

Frankly, I dont think much of Battleship Potemkin. Probably because I'm too dense to appreciate the revolutionary cinematic genius (much like I cant comprehend the finer points of photography, as evidenced by my pictures ). As a story and especially as history I think its largely worthless. Besides that, I have very little patience for propaganda. Enough that I think that had I lived in those times I probably would have been shot as a malcontent around '37 or so.

I feel that the best war movies, and by that I mean the most realistic and truthful, were made in the 60s and 70s. They didnt deal with the Germans at all. It was all about why people fought and what they died for, which is what I think is important. In the 80s they got rather preachy, "Battalions" being a rare exception.

If anyone is interested, I just checked and "Cranes Are Flying", "Ballad of a Soldier" and "Father of a Soldier" are all available through Netflix. I'm not sure what services of this kind you have in Europe or if you use them, but it seems like this stuff is there if you want to check it out. All three of the above are excellent movies, if a bit hard on the soul.
