@hans:

remember, that every operational fighter was flying the CAP. thats nearly 400 fighters and all pilots were well rested and experienced with 99 moral. also, the air battles location was right at the half of the normal range of the A6M2 at a point between GG, lae and rabaul and not at GG.

also, they didnt fought against allied level bombers (the japanese CAP sucks here) but against single engine navy planes which are easier to shoot down.

and finaly, the pilots got a extra ration of sushi before takeing off. this "light food" did not hindered them in the fight.

Bigbaba,

In this particular case it does not appear to have been an excessive abuse. The excessive abuse I speak of is early in many games when the IJN is making bombardment runs on PM with complete impunity as a result of LRCAP flown from Rabual. That's the part that's a joke. The IJN TF sits a couple hexes south of GG with sufficient CAP over it to preclude any sorties against it by the American bombers based at PM.

If the IJN could have flown effective LRCAP from Rabaul to a point south of GG historically they could have invaded GG without having to put their carriers at risk covering the GG invasion fleet as they did at the Battle of the Coral Sea.

The ability of the Japanese player to shut down PM with bombardment runs without having to cover those TFs with LRCAP form carriers in close proximity is what is a joke.

CAP is all about maintaining a presence. LRCAP is all about time over target. The further you have to go to reach the target, the more difficult it becomes to maintain a presence. Odd that with so many idividual sorties none of them got through a gap in the rotation. Probably because the game doesn't model the kind of rotation that would be necessary to maintain a full time presence over such a distant target.

ok hans. i thought that my LRCAP over the battleships far north of GG was a abuse. i agree with you, that any japanese LRCAP from rabaul to a point south of GG is simply not realistic because of the distance...although i find japanese CAP against anything what has more then one engine is very very ineffective...but thats something realistic.

a japanese fighter pilot shoot several rounds on a B-17 in the middle of the pearl harbor attack with no result and he said after the attack, that his thought was, that this plane will cause a lot of problems for the japanese in the comming war.

The problem with the game engine is that the American 2Es won't even fly into the LRCAP from Rabaul to that point south of GG and that is why those bombardment runs can be made with complete impunity. Since it's out of range of the American escorts, the cap to escort ratio calculation keeps the 2Es from ever flying at all.

The first few times I experienced those bombardment runs I assumed the opposing player had carriers nearby covering the surface TF. When time after time I sufered this bombardment and never once spotted a carrier TF I became suspicious. So, I loaded up a solitaire game as the Japanese and experimented to discover to my horror that the designers were such huge Japanese fanboys that they gave the Japanese this incredibly game breaking ahistorical capability. I lost a lot of respect for Gary Grigsby after that discovery.

we are now at the end of 1942 and i lead by 4000 VP.

you guys mean that its possible as the japanese (scenario 16 with 100%) to escape to the end of the game with this VP difference at the beginning of 1943?

anyway..i made some neary fatal mistakes, i would never ever repeat in other games. i did not fortify PM and GG to level 9 as it was quiet. after all, i still learn as a PBEM-rookie.

edit:

the situation at the end of 1942..happy x-mass, yanks.

01/12/43:

my valued opponent is gathering his fleet again south of PM.

seems that my elite bomber pilots will get some training soon. over 300 nells and bettys and over 200 A6M2 are ready to launch.

now the zeros dont shoot down so many bombers directly, but the long way back to australia in a bullet sieved bomber does the job for me.

its the end of january 1943 and the VP projection amounting 4100!

the battlefleet is intact and so are the 300+ nells/bettys with 70-80 xp-pilots. and not to forget the soon 500 fighters.

the main problem for me is the fact, that i got maybe 4-5 ships in the last 2-3 months! maybe i should play at 200% next time instead of 100%. but "you grow on your problems" and so:

BANZAI BANZAI BANZAI! long live the emperor. long live the Greater East Asia Co-prosperity Sphere!

take care. If the US gets F4u's in range of Irau, your situation will go downhill fast. Plus, the US is going to get far more ships than you in 1943. Still, congradulations on your success to date! what are each sides CV losses so far?

congrats for the great job so far from me too!

But as Borner already said, the Corsairs and Hellcats will turn your hair into grey! Better don´t even think about trying to put up your high-skill Zero drivers against them. Keep them for attack missions instead of defense, seems useless anyway. Corsairs don´t eat Sushi - they eat your Zeros! For Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner....... and they´re VERY HUNGRY
So the best advice is to keep them off range...

How about the allied invasion at Lea Lea? And always keep an eye on the Southern Solomons...

hehe, thanks for the motivational words, guys.

the CV status isnt realy good in #16 for the japanese. i lost a CV and a CVL early in the game and jamie still has all his CVs. he is very carefull with them.

everything is quiet at irau and lunga and this 2 bases are very well fortified, manned and supplied.

jamie has some INF and ENG units at lea lea and a level 1 AF. i dont think that you can build lea lea into a realy usefull base because of the limitations of the terrain.

all i can hope is that my 4100 VP advantage is enough to get me through 1943, but i realy dont have illusions about my chances. sushi is healthier the burger king, but at the end, burger king is more successfull.=)

No, mister sarcasm, we need things realistically modeled.

So, now can we expect another typical 4-5 pages of you engaging a lame effort to argue in favor of effective LRCAP 400 miles from the home airbase?

Not even you could be that stupid!

such slaughters are a pretty common result at this stage of the game. Corsair is the ruler of the skies where joining the party. As I suppose some of Bigbaba´s fine aces crashed onto the jungle coast of PNG today, never to return.

this corsairs cause realy some gray hairs for me like you all said.

86 more Jap planes go down this turn. The Essex is due imminently...The shipping losses at this point, at least in my opinion, are mitigated by the attrition of the Jap airforce. 157 total planes and/or pilots lost in two days has to hurt the long term prospects of the Japanese. The quality advantage of the Jap flyers has probably just disappeared....

I have also made some severe mistakes in this game. I would fight tooth and nail for Port Morseby, as opposed to basically writing it off and trying to re-take in '43.

Jamie.

this game is realy about makeing mistakes and try to correct them on a very expensive way.

i can now allow corsairs (even a handfull) decimate my fighters at lea lea. so i collect the entire japanese navy and...land 2 divisions at lea lea.

i think my respected opponent was surprised a little bit and thought, that i want to supply PM. but thats ther speciality of the rabaul sushi bar..you never know what you get.

lea lea should be mine in the next 2-3 turns...hopefully.

with 2 of his carriers sunk, one damaged by 2 torpedos, and his entire carrier air wings erased (for the 2nd time in the game), the only resistance are his LBA at australia.

the situation:

I don't know what happened to my corsairs that turn....but I kinda was counting on them as CAP...and they just let everyone by them...to just totally spank the shipping that was unloading in Lea-Lea. Seems odd.

Jamie.

now thats finaly a realistic air combat result in the last turn. i mean, 16 corsairs can NOT shoot down 71! planes.

my bombers sunk more then 30 allied AP/AK in the last 2-3 turns. thats my only chance to survive....to get jamies lift capacity.
