LOL, I remember when St. Mary's Glacier was actually a glacier and not a snow field. The heat is bad enough Parker road was buckling this weekend. Perhaps I should invest in some property in Winnipeg.

Winnipeg is gorgeous...in the summer. I don't actually mind the heat as long as I don't have to work in it.  I would rather be sweating the freezing my @## off.

I was up at St Mary's glacier last year...shocking how small it's gotten.

The only problem with Winnipeg is the mosquitoes. Thats why I like to be up there just after the first freeze kills them off. Personally I prefer cold to hot but that comes from being stationed at Ft. Drum and then being deployed to hottest places they could find for us.

Did I mention that Army vehicles generally have no AC? Add that to all your gear and most of our uniforms were white from salt after a day or two. Plus they could stand on their own.

Here's another fun one. Identify the weapon this soldier is holding:

Nobody, huh...? Okay, guess the gas has gone outta the balloon.

The rifle is an AR-10. Designed by Eugene Stoner (no surprise there). This particular weapon was made in the Netherlands (in 7.92mm caliber) to be used by the Portuguese army in the 1960s and 70s...

Interesting. It was obviously a relative of the M16 (an ancestor in this case), which is why I thought AR-15 at first.

I sympathize. Early in my career I worked as an environmental scientist on Superfund sites. I worked mostly on the Rocky Mountain Arsenal cleanup. I spent many, many hours dressed up in Level B or higher protective gear. As you can imagine these suits are impermeable to everything, including sweat. It's like sealing yourself up in your own personal basting bag. To keep cool we wore vests filled with "ice" (that chemical stuff you freeze and put in your cooler). The temperature difference between donning the vests in the shade, working sealed up in your suit, and going through decon, could be so extreme that if you didn't transition slowly you could go into shock and pass out...which happened to me once...ah, those were the days.

It looks really weird, with the wooden furniture and the wonky barrel.

What brought me to Winnepeg was that I was working a temporary assignment at Grand Forks back when I was doing the environmental work. We sometimes went up to Winnepeg on the weekends. We had similar mosquito problems. If you stepped into the fields you would be almost instantly eaten alive. We went to one of the local supply stores and asked the guy about how to deal with the mosquitoes. He gave us some non-descript squirt bottle that simply said "mosquito repellent". It honestly looked like someone probably bottled it in their back shed. When he gave it to us, he gave us a verbal warning to, under no conditions get it in our eyes or drink it. We thought, no worries (we'd already found a great little bar called Jonsesy's Jar so the drinking part was taken care of ). We put the repellent on and stepped out into the field and it was awesome! Like having your own personal force field. You could see the clouds of mosquitoes but they stayed at least a foot away.

When we finished that day we walked back to the truck and found that the bottle of repellent had spilled over onto a spare set of safety glasses and had completely melted them.

Is it a real representation? I mean is it a representation of something real?

Absolutely. The plate is from an Osprey Publishing book of their Men-At-Arms series regarding the Portuguese attempts to retain control of Angola and Mozambique in the sixties and seventies. The AR-10 was a limited production precursor to the AR-15/M-16.

Indeed...very AK-ish there....but the action is very much in the AR15/M16 style.

I'm thinking the stuff must have been 100% alcohol, hence the don't drink it warning. Thus, I'm not sure if the mosquito would have melted or just gotten so drunk it couldn't bite.
