Hi. Quick question...I'm making a mod for West Front and want to add new nations. How do I go about doing that and is there a limit?

Cheers

Andy

As it stands now, you can't actually add new nations. There are a limited number of "slots" (39 slots as of 1.04) that are hard-coded (I think) into the game. In your manuals sub-folder you can find a WordPad doc that lists the nations and their slots.

What you can do is pick a slot that's not used in WF (because that's what you want to mod) and use it for your new nation. For example, use 03 for an Axis nation and 22 for an Allied nation. The slot 03 is Axis Romania in EF and slot 22 is Allied Red China in RS but neither are used in WF. It does matter that you pick the right Axis/Allied slot or your troops will be fighting on the wrong side.

It's a long process and somewhat complicated, but a quick overview: you have to add OOB files, especially the platoon file which has to be encrypted, add your new units into the weapon file (also needs encryption), create or clone icons1d and icons2d files, etc.

As yours was a quick question, I won't make this answer any longer. If you still want to go ahead with your mod, feel free to ask more questions. There's a lot of people on this board who would be willing and able answer your questions. Good luck.

I was hoping to make an allied Germany so that they can fight alongside the British and other allies. Its for a Trotsky's War mod - kinda like Red Alert but in WW2. I think this will be a lot harder than I thought LOL. I was looking for the wordpad doc but cannot find it. What is the location of it?

Thanks again

Andy

Look for a "Manuals" sub-folder in your JTCS folder. In the Manuals sub-folder there is a WordPad doc entitled "CS Slots". I'm using 1.04, although it is possible that I moved it there from another location. I'll copy and paste just in case you can't find it. Modding an allied Germany won't be as hard as doing a new country but will still involve quite a bit of work. Any allied slot number from EF or RS that's not being used in WF will work. Or you can use a minor allied country slot from WF if you don't mind losing that nation.

Before you start any modding, it would be a good idea to make a copy of your JTCS folder and do all your mods to the copy, leaving your original intact and 'stock'. That way if you have a problem, you always have backup files. And you can still play stock scenarios, campaigns and PBEM games. Having backups has saved my bacon more than once.

I just purchased this game but I don't find any Japanese vs Russian scenarios? I thought this new version had them or am I missing something?

Also, where are the Brazilians?

Welcome to JTCS. The Brazilians are only found in WF. I'm not sure if there are any scenarios designed with them yet, as they are a relatively new addition. You can make your own scenarios using the Scenario Editor but the Brazilians are only available July '44 to May '45 or thereabouts. Your other question was answered in one of the other threads. Have fun.
