When I was a kid, my dad had this giant plastic board game that had a map of the Atlantic (I think) and an electronic doodad at the top. The game came with some pieces and a red crayon, and the idea was that you were suppose to track the coming and going of a submarine, eventually sinking it. I think you entered the coordinates you wanted to go to on the doodad at the top, and it would give you rudamentary noises and other feedback to tell you if you were hit, if it hit you, or what was your general progression. Anyone remember what this might be called. It seemed pretty darned cool at the time, but remember, this was the 80s and we were convinced that you could never get any better graphics than the Atari game Adventure. Yeah, the one with the duck-dragon and the glowing chalice.

I litterally grew up playing Sci-Fi and Fantasty wargames. One was the Dune boardgame based on the movie (1984), where you bought harvesters, got cool cards to equip your guys with (the Gom Jabar) and Patrick Stewart kicked butt!

The other game was this really wacky Sci-Fi game called "Shadowlord!". You would fly around, gathering planets and allies while battling these black disced shadows, one of which was the Shadowlord. He had this neat crystal you had to get and it would zap everyone. You had to get this and then get back to base, or maybe kill your opponents before a certain time limit and the Shadowlords went crazy all over you. Good times, good times.

On an unrelated side note, this is my first missive from Marseille, France, where I will hang my hat for 9 months. Judge, you wanna come down for a quick round of Memoir 44?

Erik: No pics from that period, unfortunately money was hard by at first, then rationing during war, then military pay etc. etc.  Wouldn't have had a map if it hadn't been for an old national geographics magazine.

When I finally got flush with cash, house was gone, (urban renewal), Map stored and eaten by mice.....they liked the home made paste on the flags too, I believe they were part of the Axis of Evil also.

And did you know there's someone @Matrix who simply *raves* about Conflict of Heroes ? Should be a really good game if the industry guys are impressed with it.

More than one, actually.

Yep

Given that my original source was neither of you, this means I stand corrected as I can now write :

*Everyone* at Matrix simply *raves* about Conflict of Heroes

Let's hope Udo has a couple in stock ...

I suspect Tide of Iron may well be my next purchase in the board gaming genre

A game about doing the laundry in medieval times?
Aren't you the one who thinks Train Simulator is boring?

So is Conflict of Heroes not available yet then?

Conflict of Heroes just got a thumbs up from the Into the Gamescape Podcast and they say they'll be doing a full review later. They pitched it as more complicated than Memoir but not a fully complex game (ASL). Can't find a copy for sale so if your successful let me know where. Nice thread some of your games bring back memories though many of mine have been lost over the years. Recently got the new edition of the classic Britannia and of course Twilight Struggle is a great recent addition.

I hear Tide of Iron is like a more complex Memoir 44. You should read the reviews at Boardgaming Geek and make an informed decisions (because some of the reviews were a bit negative).

I would, especially for those with non-gamer family, suggest getting Puerto Rico or even better, Agricola. These are Euro-games (like Carcassonne, they have wierd scoring rules and tend to be kinda like interactive solitaire) but they are SUPER fun. They are NOT wargames however, but they tend to appeal to almost anyone (even the game phobic wife or parents). My dad (who is a gamer) loves Agricola, and we have been able to teach nearly EVERYONE how to play and most anyone gets addicted to either Agricola or Puerto Rico. Agricola is the superior game, but it has one heck of a long set up and management during play. Puerto Rico is a bit more simple to set up and get going, but limited (although for the strategy gamer, there is literally nothing left to chance in Puerto Rico, almost nothing anyway, so every step is up to you and your fellow players).

Anyone know of that plastic game I talked about earlier? Couldn't find it on boardgame geek.

The funny thing is for me, the older I get the more I'm interested in boardgame wargames than computer wargames. So far here is what I have in terms of board games:

ASL (Rulebook 2nd edition, BV3, Paratrooper, AOO, Soliatire ASL II, RB, VotG, KGP I & II, Yanks, PB, ASLSK #1 #2 and #3 just to name few)
Europa: Fire in the East/Scorched Earth/Urals
Comand Commander: Europe (Mediterranean module, Paratrooper scenario pack)
ATS (Stalingrad, Panther Line, Stalingrad Basic Game II, Kursk)
Screaming Eagles (TCS)
Raging Storm (TCS)
Red Star Rising
A Victory Lost
Luftwaffe 2nd edition

I need some serious time off to play this stuff :) If I could only keep one wargame it would be ASL and modules: BV3, Solitaire ASL II, Red Barricades and Valor of the Guards. I think I have ASL addiction :)

At one time I had the complete Europa Series. I think that it was published by GDW. They took up most of the floor in my rec room when laid out. Pretty un-playable, but it looked great!

I think I know the game you're talking about. Don't remember the map of the Atlantic, but you had 1-4 destroyers to prosecute the sub. You entered your course and plotted it on the map. IIRC there were 3 levels for your depth charges and your sonar ranged to x number of hexes. It was kinda like a math exercise w/ "rudimentary noises".

Now I'm compeletly tortured that I can't remember the name.

Wow! That site brings back some old memories... Digital Derby... and Coleco Touchdown - best damn hand-held game ever made.

But what the hell is "Calculator Squares"?!? Talk about a game from hell for some poor kid!!!!

Yea, one I never picked up or even played.

A few on the list are S&T magazine games.

A just know a few are still missing from the list that I can't recall.

And of course, there are quite a few I played regurlarly but never purchased as some one else in my regular group already had a copy we used to play such as Krieg and Totler Krieg.

I used the listings on BoardgameGeek to refresh my memory regarding my collection.

A friend I met in highschool turned me on to the world of wargaming with Kriegspeil my junior year (not counting games I played as a kid such as Hit the Beach, Broadsides, Battleship and Stratego)......that would have been 1973 which is when I started assembling the aforementioned collection.

Most of them are still in my possession. About a dozen are currently stored at the house of one of my old wargaming buddies.

On top of that I have a huge collection of computer games, a ginormous book collection, an ever bourgeoning model collection and a substantail collection of telescopes, astronomy and camping gear.

I live alone in a three bedroom house (the house I grew up in) with an enclosed porch to boot. Every room in the house is piled to near the ceiling with games, books and models.

I'm a pack rat of the highest order.

Does anyone remember an old 3M game called Feudal that had little plastic miniatures and a fold out plastic board with peg holes for the unit locations?

I lost my copy years ago and have never been able to locate a replacement even at Knobleknights, which is a pretty good source for out of print games.

Yes I had Feudal (and a few other 3M games like Twixt, Stock market and Acquire) I should go look for it again, but I think I gave it to Goodwill along with a lot of other stuff as part of our getting ready to move process.

Sorry I don't remember Fuedal but in th 1960's my friend and I played a WW2 game where soldiers were on pegs through a plastic board along with scenery. What I remember we both enjoyed most was that each player could secretly place "mines" under the board which when actived would fire a plunger which would effectively hit the soldier's pegs shooting them up into the air. I will have to e-mail him to see what it was called as he has long since journeyed away.......

I'm a little younger than some of you, being graduating high school in 1985 so this is what I started with.

Believe me, I had many a vicious battles. As much as I love PC games and being married with a kid I don't have time or a full time table dedicated to table top gaming, nothing can replace fighting an opponent that is seated across from you, staying up all night with snacks and drinks.
