Looks like we´re achieving our goals! You know that I´m not amused about the Allied subs, it seems we are causing Miller some headache too. His statement in his last email: Sub I-3 is a right pain in the arse.......like women sometimes can be ;-) AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/02/42 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack near Muntok at 21,55 Japanese Ships PC Ch 32 PC Ch 18 PC Ch 17 PC Ch 16 PC Ch 15 PC Ch 14 Allied Ships SS S-36, hits 2 we start off with the usual fight against the Allied pirates... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Sub attack near Muntok at 21,55 Japanese Ships APD APD-34, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage APD APD-36 APD APD-35 APD APD-33 APD APD-32 APD APD-31 Allied Ships SS S-36 damn! ALERT! ALERT! Enemy TFs are sighted 120 and 180 miles East of Wake!!!!! Day Air attack on TF, near Wake Island at 82,63 Allied aircraft F2A Buffalo x 5 F4F-3 Wildcat x 12 SBD Dauntless x 70 TBD Devastator x 18 No Allied losses Japanese Ships AK Kinko Maru, Bomb hits 9, on fire, heavy damage AK Chikuzan Maru, Bomb hits 5, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage AK Hachirogata Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire AK Toyo Maru, Bomb hits 2, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage AK Zogen Maru, Bomb hits 5, on fire, heavy damage AK Nikkyu Maru, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage AK Tamishima Maru, Bomb hits 6, on fire, heavy damage Aircraft Attacking: 7 x SBD Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet 2 x TBD Devastator launching torpedoes at 200 feet god damn, I´m asking me if this can really happen twice! Just like at Midway, out of a sudden the enemy CVs pop up two hexes off the base! Again, there more than 40 search aircraft on nav search and again it is possible for the Allied CVs to sneak in unseen. I´m sure the carriers moved in at full speed, but to counter this, I have placed 6 subs 12 hexes East of Wake to either sight the enemy, or at least sight one of the enemy´s search aircraft to alert me. And once again it seems Miller is too lucky for us... TONIGHT, TWO!!!!! TFs arrived at Wake. One TF was already there... what can I say... one day later, one day earlier... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF, near Wake Island at 82,63 Allied aircraft F2A Buffalo x 2 F4F-3 Wildcat x 6 SBD Dauntless x 72 TBD Devastator x 33 No Allied losses Japanese Ships MSW Wa 1, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage AK Bandoeng Maru, Bomb hits 7, on fire, heavy damage MSW Wa 19, Bomb hits 8, on fire, heavy damage AK Cheribon Maru, Bomb hits 6, on fire, heavy damage AK Gyoku Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire AK Shanghai Maru, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage AK Akasisan Maru, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage Aircraft Attacking: 9 x SBD Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet 2 x TBD Devastator launching torpedoes at 200 feet two of my TFs are totally destroyed... this is the morning phase... can´t those damned carriers be at least clouded in? No luck... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- But the Empire strikes back! Day Air attack on TF at 84,64 Japanese aircraft A6M2 Zero x 40 B5N Kate x 42 Allied aircraft F2A Buffalo x 19 F4F-3 Wildcat x 42 Japanese aircraft losses A6M2 Zero: 10 destroyed, 12 damaged B5N Kate: 8 destroyed, 26 damaged Allied aircraft losses F2A Buffalo: 14 destroyed F4F-3 Wildcat: 7 destroyed, 21 damaged Allied Ships CV Enterprise, Torpedo hits 6, on fire, heavy damage CA Northampton CV Yorktown Aircraft Attacking: 2 x B5N Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet BANZAI! At Midway, IMO the Allied were lucky in every aspect! But lucky or not, you can´t be 100% lucky everytime! And this time, Miller will surely be thinking that he had no luck at all! Guess what, the two Allied CV TFs got SEPERATED!!! This CV TF took position 120 miles SE of Wake and the other one that should have followed ended up 180 miles SE of Wake! And as I have mentioned before, Wake is becoming a fortress, after the fall of Midway, we immediately transfered Kates to Wake. No Betties / Nells because the airfield is only level 3 yet and I knew, if the enemy carriers would show up, they would again close in enough to be in torp range of the Kates. Out of 54 Kates and 54 Zeroes we see a good number attacking (we also have an air HQ at Wake) and with the enemy CV TFs being seperated, the enemy Cap isn´t bullet prove, even though there are again a lot of Marine fighters in the air also. The high exp Navy Wildcat pilots prove to be deadyl against our Zeroes, but still, the Zeroes enable the torp carrying bombers to do their torp runs. Only two Kates were shot down by the enemy fighters. Not like at Midway, when 50+ high exp Betties / Nells only achieved two torp hits on the slow moving BBs, the 40 Kates doing torp runs put 6 fish into CV Enterprise! Needless to say that the ship is confirmed SUNK! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF, near Wake Island at 82,63 Allied aircraft F2A Buffalo x 2 F4F-3 Wildcat x 3 SBD Dauntless x 36 No Allied losses Japanese Ships AK Beryl, Bomb hits 1, on fire AK Fukushu Maru, Bomb hits 4, on fire, heavy damage AK Taki Maru, Bomb hits 5, on fire, heavy damage AK Tainan Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire Japanese ground losses: 278 casualties reported Aircraft Attacking: 9 x SBD Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet then in the afternoon, the enemy again launches strikes, targetting the third TF. This is one of the two TFs that moved in exactly today, fully loaden with construction btns... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF, near Wake Island at 82,63 Allied aircraft F2A Buffalo x 2 F4F-3 Wildcat x 10 SBD Dauntless x 47 TBD Devastator x 30 No Allied losses Japanese Ships AK Fukushu Maru, Bomb hits 1, on fire, heavy damage AK Yamazuki Maru, Bomb hits 6, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage AK Tainan Maru, Bomb hits 4, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage AK Taki Maru, Bomb hits 6, on fire, heavy damage AK Beryl, Bomb hits 3, on fire, heavy damage Japanese ground losses: 528 casualties reported Aircraft Attacking: 4 x TBD Devastator launching torpedoes at 200 feet 9 x SBD Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet the whole TF is destroyed... mmmm... lost something like 20 ships today... and still, we have sunk CV Enterprise, so I wonder if Miller will see this operation as a success... I would cheer if he would have arrived yesterday and two of my TFs wouldn´t be at Wake while only one would have been beat up. As it is now, I´m not that happy with it, even though I should be I guess. It´s just like that I don´t like losing ships that way... not again... with the loss of CV Enterprise, I guess this will mean that Miller has to be more carefully in future. This also shows that LBA can put serious harm on his CV fleet, so without nuking my airfields, upcoming invasions could get more than bloody for him. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF, near Wake Island at 82,63 Allied aircraft SBD Dauntless x 14 No Allied losses Aircraft Attacking: 5 x SBD Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF at 84,64 Japanese aircraft A6M2 Zero x 2 B5N Kate x 10 Allied aircraft F2A Buffalo x 4 F4F-3 Wildcat x 11 Japanese aircraft losses B5N Kate: 1 damaged Allied aircraft losses F2A Buffalo: 1 damaged Allied Ships CV Enterprise, on fire, heavy damage Aircraft Attacking: 2 x B5N Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet the bombers couldn´t find Enterprise anymore, the carrier sunk within minutes after 6 torp hits... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF at 85,64 Japanese aircraft A6M2 Zero x 34 B5N Kate x 3 Allied aircraft F2A Buffalo x 8 F4F-3 Wildcat x 40 Japanese aircraft losses A6M2 Zero: 9 destroyed, 10 damaged B5N Kate: 3 damaged Allied aircraft losses F2A Buffalo: 5 destroyed F4F-3 Wildcat: 8 destroyed, 18 damaged Allied Ships CL Helena Aircraft Attacking: 3 x B5N Kate launching torpedoes at 200 feet and here we attack the second carrier TF. Our Zeroes do better against the Wildcats here than against Enterprise´s and Yorktown´s fighters. Those Navy fighter pilots are the best the Allied have and they did a pretty good job against my high exp Zeroes. Even though there are more than enough Navy pilots in the pool for the Allied, replacing a lost 80+ fighter pilot with a 60 exp pilot isn´t a good deal, so every Allied CV fighter pilot counts. The Marine Buffalos were mostly only targets for our Zeroes. Here are the air losses. A clear victory for us. It seems like Enterprise didn´t launch bombers as they went down with the carrier. That´s excellent, I expected them to bogey out to the other three remaining carriers where they could be used to fill out the losses of high exp pilots of future operations. The Wildcats achieved a kill rate a bit better than 1:1 the Buffalos were nothing but targets so all in all we even achieved a 1.7:1 kill rate in our favour. Not bad against a numerical superiority... what a great victory this would have been if my TFs would have left Wake to the North again and being out of range of the carriers... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at Hengchow Japanese Bombardment attack Attacking force 10964 troops, 337 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1599 Defending force 90780 troops, 495 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2530 Allied ground losses: 191 casualties reported -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at Wuchow Japanese Bombardment attack Attacking force 2076 troops, 80 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1168 Defending force 73263 troops, 519 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1960 Allied ground losses: 66 casualties reported Guns lost 3 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ground combat at Kweiyang Allied Bombardment attack Attacking force 68185 troops, 469 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 1873 Defending force 74834 troops, 769 guns, 727 vehicles, Assault Value = 1804 Japanese ground losses: 37 casualties reported Guns lost 1
