unfortunately Miller is so smart to use all his small remaining bases in the SRA as airbases for his search aircraft. While I normally just let the defenders die due to not having any supplies, in this case I will have to take most of them out... Will dedicate a naval guard and a parachute rgt for this task soon...

We have spotted a lot of Chinese troops now marching towards Kweiyang. There are over a dozen units at Kunming, would Miller have sent them BEFORE doing his desperate deliberate attacks here, he would have had a good chance to drive my troops out again. Nevertheless, I have ordered some reinforcements to march towards Kweiyang also. Will take some time though, distance is 240 miles, going over the road coming from the East.

DD Shaw, operating with 5 other destroyers near Midway was sunk in a bold attack by the Japanese sub I-153! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

USS Shaw (DD-373), 1936-1946
USS Shaw, a 1,500-ton Mahan class destroyer built at the Philadelphia Navy Yard, Pennsylvania, was commissioned in September 1936. She made a trans-Atlantic shakedown cruise in 1937, steamed to South America in mid-1938, and transfered to the Pacific soon thereafter. Operations along the west coast and in Hawaiian waters followed in 1939-41. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941, Shaw was in drydock at the Navy Yard there. Enemy bombs set her afire and her forward magazines exploded, severing her bow and wrecking her bridge area.

However, Shaw's midships and stern portions were still essentially intact. Following temporary repairs at Pearl Harbor, in February 1942 she went to the Mare Island Navy Yard for a new bow and general overhaul. When this work was completed in late June 1942, Shaw spent several months in training and convoy escort duties. Sent to the South Pacific in October 1942, she participated in the Battle of the Santa Cruz Islands late in that month. While supporting the Guadalcanal Campaign, she ran aground at New Caledonia on 10 January 1943, requiring a trip to Pearl Harbor for extensive repairs.

Shaw returned to the war zone in October 1943 and took part in operations around New Guinea and New Britain. She was hit in an air attack off Cape Gloucester on 26 December 1943. After repair of that damage, she operated in the Central Pacific, including participation in the invasion of Guam. From October 1944 into 1945, Shaw escorted Western Pacific convoys and help liberate Luzon and other parts of the Philippines. When the Pacific war ended in August 1945, Shaw had just completed another overhaul, including major enhancement of her anti-aircraft armament. However, she was too old for retention in the post-war fleet and was sent to the U.S. east coast for inactivation. Decommissioned in October 1945, USS Shaw was scrapped in July 1946.

This page features all our pre-World War II views of USS Shaw, plus a few taken during the 7 December 1941 Pearl Harbor Raid, and provides links to virtually all our other images of this ship.

the biggest problem with the upcoming assault on Wuchow (as soon as Hengchow has fallen) will be the fact that Wuchow is a wooden hex while Changsha and Hengchow both were clear hexes. This will cause at least twice as many casualties on our side and I have the feeling that the defenders of Wuchow also still have enough supplies, at least when I look at all the flak bursts from the two base forces when my bombers go in at lower alt.

I fear the enemy reinforcements will arrive earlier than my divisions. Could get narrow if the enemy attacks at the right time and gets a little lucky with the die rolls... a dozen enemy units are marching in, this could double the enemy´s assault value in the worst case...

WOW! As expected, the point came where the enemy defense collapsed. It came unexptected soon and unexpected clear. The second big victory in China after the fall of Changsha with over 100.000 troops surrendering there. At Hengchow, 18 enemy units surrender, including 6 HQs. The enemy losses were worth over 700 victory points... Never had such an advantage in China so early. Our troops are marching on Chungking (where they will only hold their position), I have an army sitting at Kweiyang (holding position to block enemy attacks out of the town) and now I have some 4500 assault points available to wear down the defenders at Wuchow. Of course after the bloody fights at Hengchow my troops involved there need time to get back to strenght as I don´t really like to use divisions that are below 90% combat readiness. Most of my Hengchow troops are between 80 and 85/100 now. Getting them to 90% will take a couple of weeks.

He has okay naval skill and good aggression. All you need for a sub captain, I guess. Would have thought the crew would be better by now tho.

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 11000 feet

as the Chinese airforce has used Chungking as a staging base for their bombers attacking my LCUs at Kweiyang we have ordered our medium bomber force to visit the place. Not that many airfield hits but the airbase should be 100% damaged after 30 hits. With 150.000 troops there the damage will be repaired quickly, but we have destroyed a nice number of bombers so Miller will surely think about moving his aircraft within range of my bombers again. The obsolete Chinese fighters got the bounce and took down a surprised Zero.

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

One hex East of Kweiyang, a Chinese corps was forced to retreat. Unfortunately it retreated South so it is now sitting in the clear hex South East of Kweiyang endangering my supply line to the South.

Ground combat at Kweiyang

Allied Bombardment attack

I´m also not pleased by the still growing number of Allied troops at Kweiyang. I have two bgds coming in on the road from the East now, will take another 3 or 4 days to see them arriving thouhg. I´m amazed that the Chinese still can field such a high assault value here. I expect the same (or even more) at Chungking, Northern China isn´t really strong though (I´m neither) and the Western bases are all mostly stripped with the troops taking position at Kweiyang. We will hold position here while killing off the enemy in Wuchow and we will also move into Chungking within the next couple of turns with a force of about 2000 assault points. Easily strong enough to hold off Chinese attacks as we should get a nice adjusted av with the urban bonus in Chungking. Will be interesting if Miller will order an attack at Chungking as soon as my troops will have arrived there. With the experience so far, I guess he will...

turns are done pretty fast, not much interesting happening... with the loss of CV Enterprise I guess we won´t see as much Allied activity as we would have seen with the Allied having 4 CVs...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/16/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 77 encounters mine field at Wake Island (82,63)

Japanese Ships
ML Takashima, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Takashima hit a sub laid mine and is dead... and of course my whole TF didn´t lay any mines because of this mine hit... don´t want to send them in again, with my luck I´m sure I would hit another mine of the 12 mines laid...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

PG Shotoku Maru
PG Kongosan Maru

Allied Ships
SS KX, hits 3, on fire

Japanese ground losses:
26 casualties reported

ship is dead, carries half of a construction btn which will be unloaded though. It won´t take long and the Allied subs are driving me crazy I guess. Even though I started off with the destruction of some 30 subs, the remaining Allied subs are a pain. Too much of a pain when I look at the fact that they are mostly sitting static in my ports and I am putting more than a hundred ships into ASW TFs with another hundred for escort duty. I´m sure the die rolls will be the opposite at some point, but so far all my efforts were useless...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Singapore at 23,50

DD Minazuki
DD Satsuki

Japanese forces CAPTURE Noumea base !!!

Miller didn´t defend New Caledonia, a wise decision... if he wants to take it back then we won´t fight a hard fight, I just want to have the chance to get a shot with my bombers on his invasion or CV TFs...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Kweiyang

Allied Deliberate attack

Allied assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:

Allied ground losses:

my troops at Kweiyang hold once again, shredding the next Allied attack for nearly no loss. I feared to be in big trouble when all the Chinese units arrived here as reinforcement while my two bgds are still 3 turns out to arrive. Sitting fully supplied in this wooden hex behind some forts already enables us to easily withstand the Allied attacks. The 5 TK btn surely helped a lot also. All the Allied attacks in China are nothing but desperate, China is already doomed.

will try to intensivate the air war over Burma/India. Wonder if Miller will take on the fight, I wouldn´t recommend to do it. Miller has moved an Indian bgd over the trails to Akyab and has 11 units at Myitkina. Seems like he wants to defend India in Burma... We wanted to grind down the British pilot pool but instead of meeting British Hurricanes, we were engaged by an Australian squadron. Dacca is max range for my Oscars from Mandalay, all other targets further West can only be swept by Zeroes.

Three bombers for one sub, that's a pretty good exchange rate.

yeah, it seems I have to rely on my bombers, the HUNDREDS!!! of ASW vessels I´ve dedicated to fight against the two dozen Allied subs that are left are totally useless...

good example of how useless my ASW forces are. Including escorts didn´t help so far, so I´m using more ASW TFs. Doesn´t help either. Grayling hasn´t been moved and was spotted a couple of times. We moved in 6 DDs into this hex but they did nothing. But the sub attacked and sunk a small AK on the surface... MK14 work very well if they hit...

I see that there is no action what so ever in the Aleutians. Is that by design or luck??  Has there been any base expansion done there by Miller??  Sometimes as the Allies I focus on fort building until the winter penalty is over (don't some up in reports). With his attacks on Wake, I would try a spring offensive up here.

nothing happening up north and I´m happy about that. I hate fighting up there. I seized Kiska early on but am not really defending it. If Miller starts building up his bases in the North I will start reinforcing the Kuriles. With mountaineous terrain I had a couple of PBEM opponents desperately atacking but failing. We will see...

my divisions entered Chungking to block any outbreak of those units there into the South and to stop supply production there. I knew Miller would order an attack and I knew the outcome. Impossible to attack 2400+ assault points in urban terrain, this is suicide. The Chinese not just took a lot of losses, they surely burnt a lot of precious supply also. The supply situation must really become desperate in the next months, I guess that the Chinese get some 2000 supply points each day, which is by far not enough to supply the 500.000 troops in China, especially when I order a prolonged offensive.

not surprising either, Miller tried another attack at Kweiyang with the again not surprising outcome! His desperate attempts make me really confident regarding the war on the continent.
