@JSG: The update "button" on the launcher does actually work. But a beta patch is not meant to be automatically disseminated to everyone who has the game, hence why you won't find it as an update. It's an optional download, available only to people who specifically look for it (by coming here to the forums). BTW, I didn't "refine" my definition of anything. You misquoted me, and I corrected you. Also, most games today still have copy-protection. Typically it's SecuROM, Tages, or (cough, gag) StarForce. The backlash against StarForce is what's forced most companies to rethink just how much they're willing to annoy the people buying their products. Regarding serial numbers, serial numbers aren't copy-protection. They don't prevent copying. They just make it harder to try to use a program that's been (illegally) copied. Serials are one aspect of the broader category of DRM (digital rights management), which also includes things like copy-protection and online registrations. HG has no copy-protection. It does have DRM. @Yurg: The beta patch will partially work on existing saved games. You'll get the benefit of the reduced strength on enemies, and the changes to DJ's (the next time the day changes in your game), and the camera view. But the changes to merc costs, starting gear, etc. requires a restart.
