we will start our assault here soon. The first couple of attacks will surely be bloody again, no doubt that there will be level 9 forts and the Chinese troops will have enough supplies to put up a bloody resistance for the first three or four attacks...

of course Allied subs are a threat... why are my escorts so crappy? I have escorts, I have dozens of ASW TFs following my convoys, I have patrol aircraft all around and I do spot the subs nearly every turn but all that helps nothing. And the die rolls for "not" working MK14 torps must have been pretty much a joke so far as they explode all the time... have surely seen more MK10 and British torps failing to detonate than I have seen MK14 not exploding so far... it´s annoying...

an Allied sub just has to end up in a hex with my TFs and the result is a damaged or sunk Japanese ship, no matter if it´s a destroyer or a merchant...

first deliberate attack here and our adjusted av doesn´t look that good but I´m glad our losses weren´t that high. Three divs will move out and will be replaced by four "fresh" ones coming from Canton. Fresh means 90/100. I´m trying not to use any units that are below 90/100 which won´t be that easy. After the fall of Wuchow, the troops will get some time for r&r though. With Wuchow being the last Chinese bastion in the South we can either concentrate our efforts on Kweiyang to break through to Kunming (HI and resource base in the West) or we can mop up the North of China with Lanchow as oil and resource rich base. I guess it will be far easier to concentrate on the North and kill a lot of troops up there as Kweiyang is the strongest Chinese base and it´s a wooden hex. We will need some 4000 - 5000 assault points to keep position in Central and Western China which will mean that we still can field some 3000-4000 assault points for the assault in the North, especially as there are some 1000 assault points coming as reinforcements soon. Three divisions will arrive in China within the next 30 days.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

guess we can move out one division for use elsewhere. With all the Chinese troops that surrendered there will be a lot understrenght units arriving at Chungking though

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/28/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Truk at 63,78

Japanese Ships
DD Shiranuhi
DD Isokaze
DD Maikaze
DD Hayashio
DD Yukikaze
DD Natsushio

Allied Ships
SS S-28, hits 3

three ASW TFs (all consisting of DDs) are out for a hunt but instead of hunting the spotted sub, one of the DDs becomes a target himself. Torps missed, the DDs achieve three whopping near misses...

have gone through the sunken ship list. Most of the Allied ships were sunk by aerial dropped torps (either from LBA or KB) while most of my ships were sunk by 1000 lb GP bombs (the succesfull attacks by the Allied carriers accounted for at least 35 ships sunk).

Sunk by Allied sub torpedoes are 23 Japanese ships at the moment , types are APs, AKs, MSWs, PCs, the most important sinking was the APD that was torpedoed South of Singapore. I was amazed that I´ve "only" lost 23 ships so far to Allied subs, the feeling was far higher, I thought it would already be something like 50 ships. In return, over 30 Allied subs were destroyed by air-attacks, while only three were sunk by deep charges.

Sunk by Japanese sub torpedoes are 15 Allied ships at the moment, types are merchants but also a heavy cruiser (sunk near Port Moresby) and two DDs. In return we have lost 4 subs, 3 to deep charges, 1 to airattacks.

none of the enemy Beaforts are hit, they must be in the air also... two of such attacks and the airfield is closed... my medium bombers are operating at max range and I´m amazed that only one was lost to ops...

Airbase hits 2
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 6

Aircraft Attacking:
7 x T.IVa bombing at 5000 feet
12 x Hudson I bombing at 6000 feet

and a big strike is coming in from Darwin. Lautern is a level 1 airfield only and there is no flak present at the moment. That will change within the next weeks and perhaps Miller will try to fight an aerial war here (I doubt it). When we have enough airsupport and a bigger base, my Oscars will eat the Dutch fighters for breakfast and the combined effects of fighters and flak will also take a toll on the enemy medium bombers...

I always like reading your AARs as their is a topic for you to get on your "soap box" about. In this one, it is the ASW capability of the Japanese warships.   What will you do once AE comes out??

I like to use the American fleet subs for mine laying and evac missions early in the war due to the defective torpedoes. But your opponent seems to have made the right sacrifices to the dice gods.

the turns where not much is happening will go on for the next couple of weeks. I´m already thinking about some action though...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/31/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Lautem , at 33,78

Allied aircraft
CW-21B Demon x 6
Brewster 339D x 15
T.IVa x 7
Hudson I x 39

No Allied losses

Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 11

Aircraft Attacking:
7 x T.IVa bombing at 5000 feet
6 x Hudson I bombing at 6000 feet

Guess Miller will keep up his milkruns from Darwin as long as there is no defense at Lautern. And as the Allied he has not to think about op losses as he takes none, even when flying three times as far as my high exp bombers in China.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 1st Ind. Brigade, at 43,32

Allied aircraft
SB-2c x 3

Allied aircraft losses
SB-2c: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x SB-2c bombing at 6000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 36th Division, at 43,32

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x SB-2c bombing at 6000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on 37th Division, at 43,32

Allied aircraft
SB-2c x 7

Allied aircraft losses
SB-2c: 4 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
36 casualties reported
Vehicles lost 1

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x SB-2c bombing at 6000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Port Moresby , at 53,91

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 27
G3M Nell x 9
G4M1 Betty x 36
C5M Babs x 1
Ki-49 Helen x 89

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:
30 casualties reported

Airbase hits 3
Runway hits 107

Aircraft Attacking:
15 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 6000 feet

in this attack alone, we have lost 3 Helens and a Zero to ops. The Helens are all above 80 exp and the Zeroes are 79. Weather was clear, fatigue was 1 and range is 4... Japanese aircraft should get stickers like on cigarette packs: Flying kills...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Wuchow

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 14322 troops, 461 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3192

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

now the bad news!!!! Wuchow empty???? Our TK rgts attacked a Chinese corps yesterday and forced it to retreat. And it seems that unfortunately the damned unit retreated to a place to create a ZOC that resulted in Wuchow having a valid supply path again. The result is that the 100.000 troops at Wuchow TELEPORTED out of the hex!!! They are now sitting North of Wuchow on the road... Great, Miller showed no or only poor attempts to free his troops in Changsha, Hengchow and Wuchow and now a retreating, half dead Chinese unit creates a supply path...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Chungking

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 115785 troops, 902 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3082

Attacking force 118293 troops, 733 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2982

Defending force 130385 troops, 1450 guns, 20 vehicles, Assault Value = 2801

Japanese ground losses:
71 casualties reported

amazing to see the escorts were able to defend my convoy. I´m happy, I don´t need them to attack the sub, only prevent it from attacking...

SB-2c: 4 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
17 casualties reported
Guns lost 1

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x SB-2c bombing at 6000 feet

air attacks on my LCUs at Chungking. Nice to see those attacks, three bombers were lost to flak. Also two Hudsons were shot down by flak over Rangoon, Miller has been using Hudsons to recon Rangoon for a couple of turns already. He spotted my build up in this area as I want to clear out Burma once and for all in the next couple of weeks.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on No. 107 RN Base Force, at 27,56

Japanese aircraft
Ki-27 Nate x 94
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 63

No Japanese losses

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x Ki-27 Nate bombing at 2000 feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Singapore at 23,50

Allied aircraft
Blenheim IV x 13

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
PG Chosa Maru
AP Izumo Maru
AP Hakozaki Maru

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x Blenheim IV bombing at 3000 feet

nice surprise! Miller moved some Blenheim from India to Sumatra, this strike comes from Kuala, a level 2 airfield, so the bombers attack with reduced loadout. Wonder what the reduced load for the Blenheim is as it carries only 2x500 lb bombs. 1x500 lb? Low experience, low bomb load = all misses...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Singapore at 23,50

Allied aircraft
Blenheim IV x 6

Allied aircraft losses
Blenheim IV: 2 damaged

Japanese Ships
DD Hokaze

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x Blenheim IV bombing at 3000 feet

will move some bombers to Singapore to take out this base. Ground units are also preparing for an assault on Sumatra to clear out the Dutch bases... we´re not in a hurry...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 38,37

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 19704 troops, 265 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 400

Defending force 7471 troops, 3 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 190

Japanese max assault: 415 - adjusted assault: 372

Allied max defense: 190 - adjusted defense: 107

Japanese assault odds: 3 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
47 casualties reported
Guns lost 4

Allied ground losses:
52 casualties reported

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

Chinese HQ and corps entered again the rail line between Hanoi and Nanning. They were forced to retreat North, I´m sure Miller will set them to move South once again.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Wuchow

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 16603 troops, 476 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 4866

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese max assault: 21 - adjusted assault: 6

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 6 to 1 (fort level 8)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Wuchow base !!!

as the enemy troops teleported out of Wuchow the turn the Chinese corps retreated into a hex to create a line of supply again, we take the empty base. Approximately 4500 assault points will now try to chase the Chinese units that are currently sitting in the hex North of Wuchow...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Chungking

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 116119 troops, 920 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3105

Aircraft Attacking:
15 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 16000 feet

the escorts of this strike finished off the remaining Cap and the bombers torch a nice number of aircraft on the ground. During the replay it looked nice, until I looked at the losses for today:

we lose an Oscar of the sweep to ops (including pilot) and FOUR Zeroes of the escorts (including three pilots)... Excellent weather, no fatigue, 6 hexes range, no damage from the defenders and still, I lose four fighter pilots today, all had at least 80 exp. Don´t know how that will look like in AE, that´s the only thing I´m not looking forward to in AE, op losses for the Japanese are already too high and I´m speaking of those op losses where the aircraft just take off and crash, not about the op losses when damaged aircraft try to get home. Five such strikes like today and I would have lost a complete 80+ exp daitai to ops... far over 50% of my fighter losses are to ops... again, just from flying, without being attacked...

the second ASW TF engages two hexes SW of Truk. 5 near misses and a real hit means the S-class sub has to return to homeport. With only one hit, there are not real hopes the sub will sink but it will probably need more than a couple of weeks to be combat ready again...

it pretty much stays boring but I promise that the game will become more interesting within the next four weeks! I have a plan - and a lot of combat ready troops...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/06/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Chungking , at 43,32

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 35

Allied aircraft
I-16c x 6

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 1 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
I-16c: 2 destroyed, 2 damaged

the obsolete Chinese fighter bounced the Oscars and took down a surprised high exp pilot...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Chungking , at 43,32

42 casualties reported

Airbase hits 8
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 71

Aircraft Attacking:
15 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 16000 feet

Miller moved out his bombers so we only destroy 4 Chinese fighters in the air, none destroyed on the ground...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Manila , at 43,52

No Japanese losses

Allied ground losses:

Aircraft Attacking:
10 x Ki-27 Nate bombing at 2000 feet

there are still reported 50.000 Allied troops sitting (and starving) at Manila. Lots of base forces but they seem to be completely out of supply, not a single flak burst during the replay. Miller loses 10 points for ground losses on average every turn, this is a lot as I´m not doing attacks somewhere, so this means he loses a lot of squads and equipment due to starvation...

Miller stated in his last email that he isn´t happy with the number of troops I´ve brought to Myitkina. Well, I nearly have three times of the enemy assault value but it´s a wooden hex, there are surely level 9 forts already and my supply level is critical. Makes an attack impossible. We have spotted several Burma bgds, an Indian TK rgt, a UK division! , some base forces and several Chinese units. In total there are 16 enemy units dug in at Myitkina.

Now the interesting news of this turn:

OS2U-3 Kingfisher reports submarine at 104,93
E14Y1 Glen sighting report: 1 Allied ship at 103,93 , Speed 15 , Moving Southwest
E14Y1 Glen sighting report: 1 Allied ship at 103,93 , Speed 8 , Moving Southwest

something is going on 9 hexes East of Baker. The Kingfisher sighting alerts me, unfortunately we didn´t really spot a big TF or any other sightings. My Betties, Nells and Zeroes are ready and I don´t know what will happen in this area. A direct assault on Baker would come surprising as this would mean that Miller would have a built up Canton in his flank with a lot of supply, a level 4 airfield and enough support to field a lot of Naval bombers.

The sun sets and Canton airfield launches it´s first strike on the spotted fleets some 300 miles off the atoll... unfortunately, the high experienced bomber crews fly unescorted into a deadly CAP of over 180 enemy fighters! There are again two Marine squadrons aboard the CVs and also British carriers seem to be in the hex... the morale of my bombers was high, so they all got shot down...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Here comes Canton´s main strike! We have 63 Zeroes and 81 Betties / Nells on the atoll, would have liked to see a massive bomber strike...

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet
1 x G3M Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet

While our Zero escorts have a very hard stand against the high experienced Wildcat squadrons, the lower experienced Marine fighter squadrons aren´t really a match. Unfortunately our strike got bounced for a long time and our escorts really suffered. Nevertheless they really did an excellent job, enabling 31 high experienced torpedo bombers to break through the Cap to do their attack runs. During their attack runs the bomber pilots were amazed and surprised to see the enemy flak not being as strong as expected. In bold attacks from two directions, both American fleet carriers in this task force were targeted and the bombers achieved 5 torpedo hits causing fatal damage to the enemy carrier force! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

The carriers are 28 hexes away from Pearl Harbour, it´s "only" 10 hexes to Palmyra, which Miller built up to level 4 port already. It will be a gamble and I expect to see at least one of the carriers to sink! If not, both will be out of the war for months and a possible threat of an American counterattack in the Central and South Pacific is gone for the next half year I guess!

Here are today´s air losses. Our Zero daitais got hit quite hard, the carrier based Wildcats achieved a 1,8:1 kill rate against our escorts. I´m sure that my main strike would have been completely annihilated if the Marine Buffalos would have been Navy Wildcats from other carriers (which aren´t available yet). With the Wildcats as only "real" Cap, my escorts enabled the bombers to get through.

I guess there´s no doubt that this force is heading to Canton Island. With two carriers out of the attack on the first day already, I wonder what Miller will do now? Turn back? Play it stubborn and send in his bombardment TFs and afterwards going in with the amphibious TFs? I would turn back. No, I wouldn´t even have attacked! After the loss of CV Enterprise near Wake he should have waited... just waited... Wasp is due to arrive within the next month I guess, then he would have at least 4 US carriers again. Even if he puts Marine fighter squadrons on his CVs to bring them to max strenght in aircraft, he must have seen at Wake that those Marine Buffalos are only cannon fodder and not a real match for the high experienced Zeroes.

If he pushes on then it will be again an all or nothing gamble. Nuke, or no nuke! Forts are at level 8 already and there is a big base force, a dedicate CD unit and an IJN base force. Alltogether, Canton Island is an atoll bristling with CD guns and also a strong garrison. In total we field over 480 assault points! With all his small TFs this will be a major blood bath if there are no nukes before the invasion. I also have set 36 Tina long range transports to fly in parts of a mixed regiment from Tarawa, this should bring the total assault value of the atoll to 500+ next turn.

What also is very interesting is the fact that there are British CVs and BBs in the Central Pacific now. With British and Indian troops operating in Burma, I wonder what Miller thinks I will do with the 7000 assault value I have available to being lifted somewhere on the map! I´m more than tempted to throw 6000 assault points at India as there can´t be much up there to defend the sub continent. Very careless, very careless.

I really have the feeling that Miller got overconfident after his easy victory at Midway. Everything worked perfectly for him there, even though that he made a couple of bad mistakes IMO. But like I´ve said, it´s uncertain that he will have that much luck again and today is already a big defeat with two of his fleet carriers heavily damaged.

first: a bad idea to use divebombers when you can expect a lot of flak. 10 SBDs were shot down by flak today, would be cool to see Japanese carriers popping up next turn, most of the enemy´s strike capability is gone for the next three turns. Second: Miller used three dozen Kingfishers to recon the atoll, coupled with the intel he gets from the dive bombers, he now knows where every single CD gun, machine gun, rifle, pistol and handgrenade is positioned. Even though the dive bombers did no damage at all, the detection level is now probably so high that we will see 3 or 4 nukes from enemy BBs next turn again...
