ALERT! ALERT! ALERT! It´s getting sooner interesting again than I would have thought! AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/16/42 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TF 1067 encounters mine field at Midway (95,61) Allied Ships PG Swan -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- TF 1068 encounters mine field at Midway (95,61) Allied Ships PG Warrego two TFs arrive at Midway, seems like Miller is buildung up his position here more and more... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack at 101,95 Japanese Ships SS I-3 Allied Ships AK Mormacland AK Mormachawk MSW Robin MSW Grebe MSW Turkey MSW Penguin DD Humphreys DD Crosby we´re now in the area where we sighted a Kingfisher and Allied shipping yesterday. There are A LOT of TFs in the hex. Seems like we´re pretty close to over a dozen... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on Samarinda , at 31,63 Japanese aircraft A6M2 Zero x 54 B5N Kate x 31 No Japanese losses Airbase hits 1 Runway hits 45 Aircraft Attacking: 24 x A6M2 Zero bombing at 2000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on Manila , at 43,52 Japanese aircraft A6M2 Zero x 105 B5N Kate x 8 Ki-27 Nate x 117 Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 68 Ki-49 Helen x 32 Ki-15 Babs x 5 No Japanese losses Allied ground losses: 28 casualties reported Airbase hits 6 Airbase supply hits 4 Runway hits 70 Aircraft Attacking: 10 x Ki-27 Nate bombing at 2000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on Kendari Garrison Battalion, at 33,70 Japanese aircraft B5N Kate x 24 Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 10 No Japanese losses Allied ground losses: 40 casualties reported Aircraft Attacking: 24 x B5N Kate bombing at 10000 feet -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The sun sets and Canton airfield launches it´s first strike on the spotted fleets some 300 miles off the atoll... unfortunately, the high experienced bomber crews fly unescorted into a deadly CAP of over 180 enemy fighters! There are again two Marine squadrons aboard the CVs and also British carriers seem to be in the hex... the morale of my bombers was high, so they all got shot down... Day Air attack on TF at 101,95 Japanese aircraft G4M1 Betty x 7 Allied aircraft Sea Hurricane Ib x 28 F2A Buffalo x 48 F4F-3 Wildcat x 81 F4F-4 Wildcat x 27 Japanese aircraft losses G4M1 Betty: 7 destroyed Allied aircraft losses F2A Buffalo: 1 damaged F4F-3 Wildcat: 3 damaged -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF at 101,95 Japanese aircraft A6M2 Zero x 6 G4M1 Betty x 6 Allied aircraft Sea Hurricane Ib x 28 F2A Buffalo x 48 F4F-3 Wildcat x 81 F4F-4 Wildcat x 27 Japanese aircraft losses A6M2 Zero: 6 destroyed G4M1 Betty: 5 destroyed Allied aircraft losses F2A Buffalo: 1 destroyed, 10 damaged F4F-3 Wildcat: 6 damaged here comes the next strike, also a tiny one. At this point the strikes are getting screwed up already due to so many TFs in the target hex... so far, all seems to turn out into a Japanese disaster... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here comes Canton´s main strike! We have 63 Zeroes and 81 Betties / Nells on the atoll, would have liked to see a massive bomber strike... Day Air attack on TF at 101,95 Japanese aircraft A6M2 Zero x 56 G3M Nell x 18 G4M1 Betty x 27 Allied aircraft Sea Hurricane Ib x 28 F2A Buffalo x 47 F4F-3 Wildcat x 81 F4F-4 Wildcat x 27 Japanese aircraft losses A6M2 Zero: 26 destroyed, 4 damaged G3M Nell: 2 destroyed, 14 damaged G4M1 Betty: 3 destroyed, 21 damaged Allied aircraft losses Sea Hurricane Ib: 2 destroyed, 16 damaged F2A Buffalo: 32 destroyed F4F-3 Wildcat: 16 destroyed, 49 damaged F4F-4 Wildcat: 3 destroyed, 11 damaged Allied Ships CV Lexington, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage CV Saratoga, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage CA San Francisco Aircraft Attacking: 2 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet 1 x G3M Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet While our Zero escorts have a very hard stand against the high experienced Wildcat squadrons, the lower experienced Marine fighter squadrons aren´t really a match. Unfortunately our strike got bounced for a long time and our escorts really suffered. Nevertheless they really did an excellent job, enabling 31 high experienced torpedo bombers to break through the Cap to do their attack runs. During their attack runs the bomber pilots were amazed and surprised to see the enemy flak not being as strong as expected. In bold attacks from two directions, both American fleet carriers in this task force were targeted and the bombers achieved 5 torpedo hits causing fatal damage to the enemy carrier force! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI! The carriers are 28 hexes away from Pearl Harbour, it´s "only" 10 hexes to Palmyra, which Miller built up to level 4 port already. It will be a gamble and I expect to see at least one of the carriers to sink! If not, both will be out of the war for months and a possible threat of an American counterattack in the Central and South Pacific is gone for the next half year I guess! -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF at 101,95 Japanese aircraft G3M Nell x 3 Allied aircraft Sea Hurricane Ib x 26 F2A Buffalo x 5 F4F-3 Wildcat x 65 F4F-4 Wildcat x 24 Japanese aircraft losses G3M Nell: 1 damaged now the afternoon strikes. The Cap was reduced by 40% due to the morning strikes but our bomber crews are very low on morale (thank god) and they turn back before being shot down... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF at 101,95 Japanese aircraft G3M Nell x 3 Allied aircraft Sea Hurricane Ib x 26 F2A Buffalo x 5 F4F-3 Wildcat x 65 F4F-4 Wildcat x 24 No Japanese losses Allied aircraft losses F4F-3 Wildcat: 1 damaged -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF at 101,95 Japanese aircraft G4M1 Betty x 3 Allied aircraft Sea Hurricane Ib x 26 F2A Buffalo x 5 F4F-3 Wildcat x 65 F4F-4 Wildcat x 24 Japanese aircraft losses G4M1 Betty: 1 damaged -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Day Air attack on TF at 102,95 Japanese aircraft A6M2 Zero x 19 G3M Nell x 6 G4M1 Betty x 16 Allied aircraft F2A Buffalo x 4 F4F-3 Wildcat x 7 Japanese aircraft losses A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed, 1 damaged G3M Nell: 2 destroyed, 2 damaged G4M1 Betty: 6 damaged Allied aircraft losses F4F-3 Wildcat: 2 damaged Allied Ships BB Ramilles BB Royal Sovereign CL Leander Aircraft Attacking: 3 x G4M1 Betty launching torpedoes at 200 feet 2 x G3M Nell launching torpedoes at 200 feet but we also launched a strike on a British BB TF one hex to the East of the enemy carrier TFs. Unfortunately half of our bombers turned back, the remaining attackers didn´t score any hits... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack at 101,95 Japanese Ships SS I-3 Allied Ships DD McCall at the end of the day, I-3 is again target of the enemy´s ASW forces... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack at 101,95 Japanese Ships SS I-3 Allied Ships DD Gridley DD Craven DD Patterson DD Bagley DD Blue DD Helm DD Mugford second attack... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack at 101,95 Japanese Ships SS I-3 Allied Ships DD Flusser DD Tucker DD Cassin DD Downes DMS Wasmuth DMS Southard third... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASW attack at 101,95 Japanese Ships SS I-3 Allied Ships DD Morris DD Walke DD O'Brien and a fourth attack in the evening...
