I surely have bitched around a lot in my 4700+ posts in the last four years but I guess I have never posted something like this:

couple of people that were involved in the design of this game are complete IDIOTS...

wonīt give much comments on this turn, as it just makes me more or less speechles...

why even playing this stupid game? I donīt know how often people posted that only the IJN seems to be able to do nukes in this "game" and I donīt know how often I posted that the Allied can do it even more... well, if this turn doesnīt prove it... 100% sure Miller will do this with every fu ck ing island on the map as he just uses his 50 Kingfishers the day before and then nukes HAHAHA the bases...

itīs a bad fu ck in g joke... level 8 forts... hahaha my support units are 100% wiped out... lost nearly 10.000 troops to the nuke bombardments alone...

what a crappy joke. Those three divisions that came ashore at Midway now come ashore at Canton, just how long later? They arenīt even 100% prepped and they wonīt have ANY problem to take the base. We will again lose 20.000+ troops just because the nuke bombardments take out 10.000 of my troops during the night before the assault... and then this attack! we lose the complete nav guard unit that is in the lead... atoll assault and the enemy once again takes no damage at all... we have 500 assault points, level 8 forts, 20.000 supplies and nearly 70 CD guns...

why keep on playing?

This is how my units look like. 10.000 troops wiped out during the night, which is 100% of my support units and 50% of my total strenght on the atoll. Ridicoulos enough that you can build level 8 forts on this place, is negated by the ridicoulos fact that level 8 forts donīt help at all. I know both the ridicoulos fort building and the even more ridicoulos nuke bombardment will be changed in AE but when it is the norm in this campaign and not the exception that the enemy can land like at empty bases then I will have to stop playing this WITP campaign because thereīs no sense keep it going on.

With the use of 50 Kingfishers to recon the base the day before the bombardments, Miller definetely knows how to enable him to do nukes EVERYTIME. lol

this is already the fourth phase that the enemy TFs are unloading! Canīt believe that Miller again brought far too few ships for his troops unloading at an atoll... The second US fleet carrier of the war is confirmed SUNK! And Lexington is limping heavily damaged back to Palmyra also and she was the one that took three torpedoes during the Japanese air attacks, so I had given Saratoga more chances to survive...

this time the Allied attackers get a bloody nose but I doubt the base will hold. Miller has brought no dedicated combat eng units so the forts seem to be his main problem at the moment. Still, the three divisions will be too much for the defenders I guess. We are now trying to reinforce the island asap with all possibilities we have. Once again Miller came too early with too much force. We are building up both Pago Pago and Baker but both airfields are only level 2 at the moment, so there wonīt be any air support for Canton. The plan was to have those three bases support each other when the Allied attack goes in, but just like at Midway, the Allied attacked too early for our defense.

And still, when I concentrate on my main tactic to inflict serious losses on the attacker then I have to be satisfied. We didnīt wreck havoc on the invasion, but we have one US fleet carrier confirmed sunk and another one limping back seriously damaged and in danger of sinking also. Thereīs only one US CV left operational at the moment so I just have to be satisfied. The downside is that if Canton falls, then my positions in the South Pacific are impossible to hold and have to be abandoned. With only the British carriers and one US carrier in the Pacific, I am now sure that Miller wonīt attack into the area around Baker, nor at Wake. But hey, I also was sure not to see him attacking when he lost Enterprise near Wake.

We will see...

The loss of Saratoga resulted in quite high air losses today also...

Tokyo news announces the sinking of US fleet carrier Saratoga by I-175 near the Pacific atoll Palmyra! Japanese naval forces once again prove to rule the sea and once again the American imperialists have suffered a serious loss! BANZAI! BANZAI! BANZAI!

USS Saratoga (CV-3, Originally CC-3), 1927-1946

USS Saratoga, a 33,000-ton aircraft carrier, was converted from the battle cruiser Saratoga (CC-3) while under construction at Camden, New Jersey. Commissioned in November 1927, as the second of the Navy's initial pair of fully capable aircraft carriers, Saratoga spent the years before World War II taking part in exercises, training aviators and generally contributing to the development of carrier techniques and doctrine. She was in the Pacific when the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 and took part in the abortive Wake Island relief expedition later in that month. While operating in the Hawaiian area on 11 January 1942, she was struck by a torpedo from a Japanese submarine, necessitating several months of repairs, during which her eight-inch guns were replaced by the more useful 5"/38 dual purpose type.

Saratoga returned to action in June 1942, in time for reinforcement operations immediately following the Battle of Midway. She was next engaged in supporting the Guadalcanal Operation in August 1942, including participation in the Battle of the Eastern Solomons. Another enemy submarine torpedo hit on 31 August put her in the repair yard for two months.

The carrier was back in the South Pacific war zone in December 1942, spending the next year in that area. In November 1943, her planes made devastating raids on the Japanese base at Rabaul and supported the Gilberts operation later in the month. In January and February 1944 Saratoga took part in the invasion of the Marshall Islands. She then was sent to join the British Eastern Fleet in the Indian Ocean and participated in raids on Japanese positions in the East Indies during April and May 1944. An overhaul from June to September prepared her for employment training aviators for night operations. In February 1945, she carried night fighters during the Iwo Jima invasion and raids on the Japanese home islands. Several Kamikaze suicide plane hits on 21 February caused serious damage and casualties, sending her back to the U.S. for another session in the shipyard.

Saratoga returned to service in May, again taking on a training role that lasted until Japan's surrender. Beginning in September 1945, she transported servicemen from the Pacific back to the United States as part of Operation "Magic Carpet". Too old for retention in the post-war fleet, Saratoga was then assigned to target duty for the atomic bomb tests at Bikini, in the Marshall Islands. She survived the first blast, on 1 July 1946, but sank after the 25 July underwater test. USS Saratoga still lies beneath the waters of Bikini atoll, where she is occasionally visited by divers.

Everyone who has played this game for some time knows about the "nuke bombardments." It will help the Allies in the end as they have a lot more BBs by mid-42. You look at the negative side of this situation.

Right now with the lost of his second CV, I would be planning to invade the Line Islands and/or Johnson. Then come back for Canton. Any troops he has on them are now lost to any counterattack. Canton Island is indefensible and cut off from resupply efforts without control of the surrounding oceans. That's why as an Allied player I don't try to reinforce it heavily. You can push him back to Hawaii and prevent any counter invasions until late 43 with the lose of his CVs. Go get him!!

no thereīs no need for a new hr as also 2 BB and 3 CA are easily enough to nuke a base. It all comes down to the detection level and Miller knows this as good as I do, thatīs why we have seen 50+ Kingfisher recon missions during the day before the nukes. The only thing that helps is the fact not to put any support units like base forces, AA units or eng units onto an island. This of course wonīt help you either.

Go get him!!

you are correct. At the moment it is pretty much a draw when it comes down to ground warfare on the atoll, but Iīm sure that the enemy will gain strenght soon after having rested a couple of days. Primary goal now is not to lose Canton and bring my carriers into position. Then Baker has to be built up to level 4 (itīs only 2 and 78% at the moment) and the airfield on Canton has to be repaired (it repairs at a rate of 3% at the moment).

then I can think about everything else...

no Allied attack at Canton today. We were able to lift in 14 assault points with Emilies and Mavisī from Baker. A bit more will be flown in from Tarawa starting from tomorrow, so with each day we should be able to lift in some 30-35 assault points. We have also a CL/DD TF in the area now, will be used as fast transport TF, lift capability is 1500. The TF will lift in a mixed bgd from Tarawa. The most important thing would be to repair the airbase on Canton though, not doable with only three dozen intact eng squads remaining.

a transport TF is returning to Canton. We heavily damage a big AK but also the sub suffered 3 near misses and a hit. Donīt know what is going on now, something makes me think that Miller wonīt try to capture Canton Island but to withdraw his forces. But he only moved one transport TF back, the others are moving NE towards Palmyra. He stated in his email that heīs not happy about forts level 8 as he only had expected level 2 or 3. Iīm uncertain what will happen next.

Well if you do manage to hold at Canton (and lets face it, without CVs, his position becomes much harder....)
You could very well mangle 3 divisions.....

Is there anyway you can move in enough surface ships/KB to stop the nuking? Or at least nuke his troops back?

Ouch. That has got to hurt.

I don't think it is possible to "nuke" troops sitting outside of a base though.

at the moment there are no surface combat ships nor KB in the area to stop more nukes, but Iīm pretty sure there wonīt be any more. And Canton is so far away from a major Japanese port that Iīm not really willing to send in BBs to stop the bombardments as Iīm sure I would take damage also and Japanese damage control is... well, we all know how Japanese damage control looks like. Canton isnīt worth it to risk major ships. Area around Tarawa would be worth it...

believe me, it did hurt...

itīs far harder (if not impossible) to nuke troops outside of a base as you donīt raise the detection level of the whole base including the troops there. And the nukes only work against support troops and not at all against inf or tk units, so any Japanese bombardments on the attackers wouldnīt do much damage, not at all comparable to the nukes my troops had to sustain.

These were the worst bombardments I have seen on an atoll in my career playing WITP. Miller knows the game very well, thatīs why he ordered those 50+ Kingfisher recon missions... but this will also mean bad news for future as Iīm sure he will do that EVERY time in future. Even if I would knock out a lot of his ships, one bombardment TF is enough, as you can see, the first bombardement TF already did 4000 casualties and damaged the base 500%...

ouch! We took down 16 enemy aircraft but we will lose two of the small AKs... not something I like. A very poorly performed supply mission to Lautern. I have a level 3 airfield there already and I knew the TF was going in. I also knew that there are some 50-70 enemy bombers at Darwin and I knew that 40 fighters canīt stop them at all. Well I know that 100 canīt either, but it would have been so costly then, that it wouldnīt be worth for the Allied to attack again. I have enough fighters available so it shouldnīt have been a problem to put up a decent Cap. Problem is also that we never manage to scramble more than 50-55% of our fighters. Thatīs especially a problem during airfield attacks as the bombers will always torch around 40% of your fighters because they stay grounded.

VICTORY!!!! As you can see, Miller has abandoned the beaches at Canton Island!!!! 5.000+ troops are left behind. Looks like my level 8 forts really scared him, my attempts to fly in reinforcements didnīt encourage him either, at least this is what he stated in his email. Iīm amazed as Iīm sure that a couple of deliberate attacks would have worn down my troops pretty fast.

I really canīt believe it! So the Allied attempt to take Canton Island was a failure and Miller paid with one CV lost and another one heavily damaged. Great!

we are now trying to kill off the stranded Allied troops on Canton. Unfortunately this will cost us more casualties than the Allied in the end. Will be interesting how long it will take until those troops will surrender.

I was thinking more about ambushing his transports than fighting his remaining CVs. Losing three full divisions is bad already, but it's worse when those are the best of the available divs.
And catching all those big guns while at sea would be a better way to prevent the nuke bombardments.

I was surprised by the appearance of so many Buffaloes. I would have thought that by April, all those squadrons would have converted to F4F. Does the Nikmod reduce the replacement rate for the Wildcats ?

The transports have gone already and I doubt that the battlewaggons will be back for a bombardment. And if they come, they will face Betty strikes as by then the islandīs airfield will be operational again.

Iīm sure that Miller could have upgraded at least one of his Marine squadrons on the carriers to F4F-3, not enough to upgrade all of them to F4F-4 already. If he would have downgraded his land based F4F-3 he surely would have had enough aircraft to have only F4F-3 and F4 on his carriers, but the Marine squadrons would still be only in the mid 50 exp so they are nowhere as good as the 80+ exp Navy squadrons that start out on the carriers.

As it is now, I donīt expect to see any Allied attempts in the Pacific for the next 6-10 months. With Wasp being available in May IIRC he will only have two operational US CVs and the two or three British carriers are not that an impressing threat. Millerīs move on Midway was a great success, his raid on Wake was a mistake and Canton Island tops this off. Midway was excellent, the rest was kind of too early, too far. This means now that he has pretty much crippled his offensive capability and this will give me ample time to build up my strongholds in the Pacific. Would he has succeeded at Canton I would be in trouble as he could keep moving then as I wouldnīt be able to build up bases to support each other. Now I have the time to build up Baker, Tarawa, Apamama, Makin....

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/25/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 106,86

Japanese Ships
SS I-30, hits 2

Allied Ships
AK Prusa
AK Morazan
DD Kane
DD Hatfield
DD Lawrence
DD Sands

if you know the exact path a TF is going and you have a couple of subs on hand to be placed in the path of the convoy then you constantly get attacks. This is again an attack on the convoy that goes from Canton to Palmyra. Unfortunately the 6 torps missed the big AK but the DDs also only achieved 2 near misses. Only a couple of hexes left and the convoy will be at Palmyra so we wonīt have a lot more chances to attack.

Still no sign of Lexington being sunk. I guess sheīs disbanded at Palmyra (size 4 port) and she will probably make it. With the fuel storage explosion after three torp hits she will at least have a high sys damage (50 perhaps?) so we wonīt see her in combat within the next months.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 106,86

Japanese Ships
SS I-30

Allied Ships
AK West Portal, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

then I-30 kills the already damaged West Portal...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Kungchang , at 46,26

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 35
Ki-21 Sally x 65

Ki-21 Sally: 1 damaged
Ki-49 Helen: 1 destroyed, 4 damaged

Allied ground losses:
42 casualties reported

Airbase hits 4
Airbase supply hits 5
Runway hits 27

Aircraft Attacking:
8 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 11000 feet

recon told us that there are some 40 enemy aircraft at Kungchang but none are destroyed on the ground. And the enemy fighters are no longer flying Cap as this just increases their losses...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Samarinda , at 31,63

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 54
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 70

No Japanese losses

Airbase hits 1
Runway hits 37

Aircraft Attacking:
32 x Ki-43-Ic Oscar bombing at 2000 feet

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Japanese aircraft
Ki-49 Helen x 20
Ki-46-II Dinah x 1

No Japanese losses

Runway hits 1

Aircraft Attacking:
11 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 16000 feet

Davao has a squadron of Hudsons that are flying naval search helping enemy subs locating our TFs. Have dispatched a daitai of Helens that will fly a couple of attacks. 16.000 ft is too high to achieve something, this was only a careful attack to check the enemyīs AA defenses...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Manila , at 43,52

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 84
G4M1 Betty x 27

Defending force 47737 troops, 389 guns, 257 vehicles, Assault Value = 1054

Allied ground losses:
37 casualties reported

our troops are still in red supply at Myitkina. They are starving, I canīt believe it... Seems not possible to bring supply forward from Mandalay (5 times more supplies there than needed).

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Canton Island

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 21703 troops, 163 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 438

Defending force 5365 troops, 54 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 28

Japanese ground losses:
21 casualties reported
Guns lost 5

Allied ground losses:
25 casualties reported

even with bombardment attacks alone we take casualties... guess starving those troops is no option as they probably have thousands if not ten thousands supply points. Guess Miller only evacuated most of his troops but no supply at all as he didnīt even have enough transports to evac all of his troops.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Green Island

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 639 troops, 5 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 16

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Japanese max assault: 22 - adjusted assault: 24

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 24 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Green Island base !!!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Chungking

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 163429 troops, 1514 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 4743

Defending force 119265 troops, 1298 guns, 22 vehicles, Assault Value = 2487

Japanese ground losses:
95 casualties reported
Guns lost 2

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Myitkyina

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 38400 troops, 376 guns, 231 vehicles, Assault Value = 1051

Defending force 148389 troops, 1929 guns, 23 vehicles, Assault Value = 2977

Japanese ground losses:
117 casualties reported
Guns lost 8

the enemy now starts bombardments also, doing more damage than we do. Without getting supplies to the front we wonīt be able to achieve anything, I must be happy if my divisions wonīt become disabled because the troops are starving...

In Canton, did your casualties result in destroyed squads, or only disabled ones.  I ask about your ground attacks, not the naval nukes.
If it's too costly to wipe them out, why not bomb them ?  A range 0 ground attack mission, pilot academy would be nice for training new classes.

mostly disabled, but when looking at the victory points, I lose 2-3 points every day (compared to 10-12 for the Allied which are starving on a couple of places). The Allied went through 8500 points for ground losses already, Iīm at 400 at the moment. I wonīt use aircraft to bomb the enemy on Canton as I want to have full offensive capability there if the enemy shows up again - which is highly doubtable. Canton is a level 4 airfield so I can have some 200 ac there, with 27 search aircraft we have max 170 strike aircraft, so not much room for a pilot training school.

I will just keep bombarding, hoping that at some point the 5000 enemy troops will be wiped out due to either my bombardments or supply shortage.
