Not at all. In fact, Australia’s formal name is the Commonwealth of Australia (see http://www.australia.gov.au/Our_Government) The generally accepted usage of the term 'The Commonwealth' is for the 'Commonwealth of Nations' which includes the other British aligned nations as stated above. quote:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Nations The Commonwealth of Nations, usually known as the Commonwealth, is a voluntary association of 53 independent sovereign states, most of which are former British colonies, or dependencies of these colonies (the exceptions being the United Kingdom itself and Mozambique). No single government in the Commonwealth, British or otherwise, exercises power over the others, as in a political union. Rather, the relationship is one of an international organisation through which countries with diverse social, political, and economic backgrounds are regarded as equal in status, and co-operate within a framework of common values and goals, as outlined in the Singapore Declaration. The only time it is an issue is when it was used to overlook credit where credit was due, a.k.a. MacArthur's usage of the terms 'American' and 'Allied' in publicity releases.... (Churchill was not innocent of this either...) However, the term 'British Possession' might raise a few hackles in this day and age...
