Menser -> Confused .....Commonwealth? (12/20/2008 4:35:58 AM)

OK ...started a new game to try CHS ..... Though this confused me before in stock ...... I see alot of ships listed as Indian, Austrailian, Canadian, New Zealand, and ummm .....Commonwealth. Ummm, errrr isn't the New Zealand , Austrailian, ect., ect., Gurka, ect. (I.E anything not Allied Dutch, American, French, Chinese, and Japanese) Commonwealth forces? Are these just a generic designation for units with no specific oregin?

bradfordkay -> RE: Confused .....Commonwealth? (12/20/2008 7:10:02 AM)

Commonwealth ships could be from South Africa, Hong Kong, Bahamas or any of the other Britsih possessions that don't make up their own seperate nationality in this game.

Dixie -> RE: Confused .....Commonwealth? (12/20/2008 7:16:50 AM)

Also several Norwegian ships iirc.

...and one Greek, I believe (Averof) [:)]

Several of our friends on the forum may correct me, but IIRC ANZACs do not like being referred to as "Commonwealth"?

Terminus -> RE: Confused .....Commonwealth? (12/20/2008 10:43:30 AM)

That's why they're not, in the game...

Not at all. In fact, Australia’s formal name is the Commonwealth of Australia (see http://www.australia.gov.au/Our_Government)

The generally accepted usage of the term 'The Commonwealth' is for the 'Commonwealth of Nations' which includes the other British aligned nations as stated above.

quote:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Commonwealth_of_Nations

The Commonwealth of Nations, usually known as the Commonwealth, is a voluntary association of 53 independent sovereign states, most of which are former British colonies, or dependencies of these colonies (the exceptions being the United Kingdom itself and Mozambique).

No single government in the Commonwealth, British or otherwise, exercises power over the others, as in a political union. Rather, the relationship is one of an international organisation through which countries with diverse social, political, and economic backgrounds are regarded as equal in status, and co-operate within a framework of common values and goals, as outlined in the Singapore Declaration.

The only time it is an issue is when it was used to overlook credit where credit was due, a.k.a. MacArthur's usage of the terms 'American' and 'Allied' in publicity releases.... (Churchill was not innocent of this either...)

However, the term 'British Possession' might raise a few hackles in this day and age... [;)]

no
not at all ??

but what is your understanding of the term "Commonwealth" and ANZAC ?

The troops of the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps were all part of the british commonwealth. Im sure there are some more specific legal definitions some may feel the need to quote ?

Im personally VERY much more annoyed by misuse of the ANZAC name for things like sporting rivalry between australia and New Zealand.

Andrew Brown -> RE: Confused .....Commonwealth? (12/20/2008 12:05:22 PM)

My take on this is that "Commonwealth" means "other commonwealth nations that are not individually represented". i.e. Commonwealth but not British, Australian, NZ, Canadian or Indian.

For shipping it is probably not all that important anyway, since there are no restrictions on how you combine and group ships.  Really the biggest effect of having separate Commonwealth nationalities is the various pilot pools.  So you can't put Commonwealth pilots in an Australian squadron and vice versa.

I guess the various restricted commands are a similar but separate restriction, but you can get around that by paying political points.

Your Take makes the most sense Andy ..... Great info there Reg.
So what would be The Largest Commonwealth Vessel excluding freighters and oilers given Andy's take?
Any warships at all?

Probably the greek ship Georgios Averoff. I'm not sure if they're in the game, but historically there were a handful of South African frigates assigned to the East Indies Fleet although hardly any actually made it as far as Ceylon before the surrender.
