So I said that I would post again when we got to 1944, and 1944 is here!!

So the Allied conterattack has started and it has been directed at the lower Solomons. Right now fdeutsch has taken Tulagi and the Russel Islands, though he only has a size one airfield built so far and he has not attempted a landing at Lunga or Rennel Island. Starting in October of 43, the lower Solomons campaign has been marked by and huge night actions that I have generally won and one carrier action that I lost. There have been the usual huge air battles as well, but overall the air war losses are not unfavorable to me. However, the losses have been high enough that I am well away from the 3-1 ratio I need to get a 1944 autovictory.

In the meantime I have completed my conquest of Hanoi and Haiphong, destroying the remains of about 40 Chinese units there. Now I have pushed the remaining units in China into Sining in the North and that will fall (ending the Chinese campaign) within a week or two. Fdeutsch has managed to get about 10 Chinese units to India, and maybe there are 6-8 that skipped across the border into the Soviet Union.

Here is the current score!

Here's the current situation in the Solomons as of 1/1/1944. I have light naval forces at Buin and Shortlands, with huge Allied fleets at Tulagi and some PT boats at the Russell Islands. You can also see TF markers for a couple subs Fdeutsch has a Nauru. Fdeutsch has his carriers plus about 100-150 Corsairs flying over Tulagi (overloading the airfields). There are several American para battalions on the Russells and about 4-5 divisions plus a huge stack of engineers on Tulagi.

My aircraft are at Buin and Shortlands. The airfields at Lunga, Rennell Island and Munda are pretty much knocked out right now.

Here is the current situation in Burma and China, which are the only other theaters where there is significant combat right now.

In Burma, Fdeutsch still has his army at Akyab, but I have reinforced Burma with units freed up from the China Expeditionary Army when Southern China and North Indochina were cleared. For now, it doesn't look like the Allies will be taking Akyab anytime soon. I am keeping recon flights over the bases around Imphal and Ledo, so if he attempts to attack Burma across the jungle trails I will have ample warning of it.

In China you can see that everything except Sining has been captured. Most of my troops are of course at Sining, finishing off the Chinese campaign. Pretty much everywhere else is garrisoned except for Ichang, which I have rechristened as the Imperial Japanese Air Combat Training Center since it is out of the way, not worth many VPs and surrounded at a short distance by major airfields at Changsha, Wuhan, Hsinyang and Homan.

Sining probably has no more than a week or two left before it falls. In fact, another attack is going in next turn and that will probably reduce the fortifications there to level 5 and may even capture the city. Fdeutsch was nice enough to fly his Indian para brigade and a Burmese infantry brigade into Sining to try to help out the Chinese, so those units will be joining the bag of PoWs once the city falls. The city will fall though, I am generating 5-1 and 6-1 odds even with the 20 or so units and originally level 8 (now down to 6) fortifications that Fdeutsch has there. Once the fortifications wear down a little more the city will fall and the mass surrender will begin. Fdeutsch did try to use his air force from Ledo to supply and bomb at Sining, but in doing so he stopped suppressing my Burmese airfields and my own bombers pasted his P-38Js, B-24s and C-46s on the ground at Ledo. As I said, the net effect of his air missions from Ledo was to throw more troops into the trap at Sining.

Other than China, Burma and the Solomons the situation is the same that it was in my last AAR at July, 1943. Things in the SRA, New Guinea, Gilberts/Marshalls, Wake, Kuriles and Manchuria are all very quiet for now. A couple of the airfields on Timor have been knocked out by raids from North Oz, but thats about it.

Now I will go over the changes in VP status and losses since 7/7/1943:

Aircraft: On July 7, 1943 VPs the Japanese had lost 6910 aircraft, with 7086 aircraft lost by the Allies. Those numbers are now at 14197 and 12095 respectively. So you can see that the Japanese have lost nearly 7300 aircraft and the Allies 5000 aircraft in the last 6 months of game time. This is mostly in the Solomons, where the Allied carriers and long-range fighters and bombers have been heavily engaged. Once he builds out his airfields more, we will see more Corsairs and Thunderbolts in action. Also, per our house rules Francois and I can start using carrier-capable air units in combat roles on carriers now, so there will probably be Corsairs on many of the Allied carriers before long. This is good for Francois obviously, not only because of the power of the Corsairs, but because he has lost thousands of naval aircraft in the Solomons, so his previously huge backlog of trained naval pilot replacements has probably been mostly used up by now.

Ships: In July, 43' naval losses by class were:

Class Japan Allies
CV 0 2
CVL/CVE 0 0
BBs 0 10
CAs 0 5
CLs 1 8
DDs 7 39
Subs 23 57
Total 67 463

You can see the total numbers in the first post with the 1/1/1944 scoring above. So in the last 6 months I have lost about 90 ships and Fdeutsch has lost almost 160. Nearly all of these were in a series of night actions and air raids in the Solomons. Since July 43' the losses by class have been:

Class Japan Allies
CV 1 0
CVL/CVE 2 0
BBs 2 7
CAs 6 9
CLs 7 6
DDs 21 43
Subs 6 8

As you can see, Allied BB losses in the Solomons have been very heavy, and they were already heavy going into July 43'. At this point, I think the only old Allied BBs left are the Mississippi and the Nevada (which are both significantly damged), and all of the 4 Alabama/South Dakota class new BBs have been sunk as well. I think that at this point the only operational BBs the Americans have left are the North Carolina and the Washington. For my part the major losses have been the Akagi, Zuiho and Ryujo, which were lost a couple months ago in a carrier engagement near Guadlcanal. Most of my best surface action light cruisers have been sunk, but other than that none of my combat ship classes have been seriously impacted. KB had its air arm badly shot up in the carrier action I mentioned, but training of the new pilots is proceeding well and new carriers have arrived from the shipyards to replace the ones I have lost. My repair yards are full of the survivors of the battles around Guadlcanal, but repairs are proceeding well and nearly all the cripples from the battles are safe now.

Army losses since July 43' have been about 2500 points for the Allies and 400 for me. Most of the Allied losses were in China and North Burma. About 50 Chinese units surrendered at Haiphong when the fighting in Indochina wrapped up, and about a dozen more worth about 500 VPs surrendered when Yenen was taken a couple months ago. A few more units were destroyed around Myitikyina when they tried to escape into India. My army losses in the Solomons have been very light, since Fdeutsch has avoided my well garrisoned bases at Lunga and Rennell Island in favor of the smaller, lightly garrisoned islands.

So where do we go from here? Who knows! Fdeutsch seems to finally be trying to soften up the SRA a little bit, but he has no shipping in the area to launch any invasions. Within a week or two the vast majority of the China army will be available, so I will have to put them to work somewhere else.

I'll post another round of this AAR once we get towards the middle of 1944, unless something dramatic happens in which case you will get an update before then!

This game has reached mi-1944 and is now ended. Due to new job, I have no time to go on.

Thanks to Esteban to play with me 3 years :)

Yes, we are calling the game in late May, 1944 after 3 years of play.  The Allies control Apamama in the Gilberts, most of the Solomons, lower New Guinea up through Lae and Finschafen and the islands directly north from Darwin, including Kai Island.  The Allies are stalled at Kai Island, where the airfield has been closed for months by the Tokyo Express and bombing from Amboina/upper New Guinea, but they are advancing elsewhere.

I invaded Russia with the troops freed up from China.  We had to put in some new house rules to prevent it from being a complete Japanese walkover there, but now the bulk of the Russian army are set up in defensive positions at Chita or around Ulan Bator.  Pretty much everything between Chita and the Pacific Ocean (including all the resource/industrial cities) has been overrun, but a couple bases and trapped units are at Rukhlovo and Prokhorvka (spelling those from memory, so maybe wrong on exact spellings) are holding out for the moment.

The VP count has the Japanese just over 60,000 and the Allies at about 31K-32K.  So we are most certainly not getting a Japanese autovictory in 1945.  Allied I can't say opn the autovictory in 45', but they would probably have to invade Japan at this point to generate the VPs to win the game.

I'd like to thank Francois for sticking with this game since September of 2005!  As you can see we have pretty much been able to stay on a 1 turn per day schedule during that time.  We have completed nearly 28 months of the game in the last 39 months of real time and given the VP count we would probably be continuing on into late 1945 or all the way into Spring of 46' before we finished.
