Iridium, that is a great photo. I think that it's the first time I've seen it.

I was kinda surprised by finding it so easily myself. I wonder what vessel the photo was taken from, I assume it was from Hornet. To be on another ship watching all this unfold must have been rather surreal.

It may have been taken from the Carolina. Look at the location of the Wasp, and where the O'Brien is at the apparent moment of torpedo impact. If the torpedoes that hit the Wasp, O'Brien and North Carolina were all from the same spread, then the Showboat can't be far from the photographer...

Of note in the real action.  My old neighbors older brother lost his life on the Wasp.  He was a boilerman and was the first man in the Navy from Dayton Ohio to lose his life during WWII.  His mother and my neighbor were there and his mother broke the champagne bottle across the bow of the USS Dayton CL-105 at its launch.  Bud has the bottle shards contained in a net that the bottle is wrapped in prior to striking the vessel as well as some pictures.

OK, I may be missing something but... is this:

a) A joke by the original poster?
b) The game intentionally recreating an historic event?
c) An incredibly unlikely coincidence?

Also, what was the Japanese submarine naming convention? Was it really just numerical ("I-19") or was that just the American designation for enemy subs?

EDIT: OK, appears to be a joke, given that it was also the same date (just noticed that).

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 09/15/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 67,101

Japanese Ships
SS I-19, hits 2

Allied Ships
CV Hornet
CV Wasp, Torpedo hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
BB North Carolina, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
DD O'Brien, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Lansdowne
DD Mustin

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The game underrates the effectiveness of bomb and torpedo hits. Hence it's hard to replicate history (which you're reporting).

I quit too, at least until mid 1943 when the US sub ARE SINKING EVERYTHING, well at least two to three a turn

Before US DDs upgrade their ASW is not very good dispite crew experience, except for the Clemsons that is.  I used these DDs as dedicated ASW units mainly out of Townsville and PH.  The US does other capable ASW ships and you can also use them (PC, MSW, APD).  Combined with strong air ASW and Naval attack/search all operating at 2000 ft it was a success.  I did loose three CLemson and had more damaged but operating close to a good base with an AR in it prevented more losses.  How many subs did I sink using this method, not sure but it was some where between 20 -30.  I admit it was against the AI but I did start a PBEM game (thats currently on hold) and was also having good results.

I will try to explain for you new guys.

Once in a while Knavey posts a thread containing a "modified" combat report that actually reflects something which happend during WWII (usually some extreme result). He always names his posts something like: The game is BROKEN!!, or In REAL live this could NEVER happen!.

I personally think he does this to reflect on the unpredictability of war and to take the mikey out of people that are complaining about the "extreme" results that can somethimes happen during gameplay using the argument that this result could never have happened during the REAL war in the pacific... It's either that, or Knavey is just totally bonkers .......

And yes, the Japanese used numbers to designate subs, as did the Germans...

After the war, my father had a secretary who's brother had been on the Wasp. His duty station was right where the first torpedo hit. He was officially MIA.

shocking attack.. NAaaaaaaaaaa Never happen... Next thing we'll hear is that in the game someone sank the IJN Taiho with one torp... Shocking..

I did sink the Yamato once with a gaggle of Swordfish. The second wave couldn't find the target, so she went down fast.

Sort of like the Shinano, though in that case the crew wasn't running with watertight integrity so things got out of hand pretty quickly.

That was a cool and hard one.

Like everything other in War, this shouldn´t happen.

But sometimes, it did.

Pretty close to what actually happened at Torpedo Junction on 15 September, except there were 2 I-Boats.

Yes. I forget the name of the son that died but I took a picture of the memorial plaque for the Wasp for my neighbor that aboard the USS Yorktown at Patriots point. He worked in the engine gang I think as a boiler man.

The difference between playing the land oriented games and this one is proving very interesting for me. Here the loss of certain, specific , assets can have game changing effects. That is not often the case on the Eastern Front .

it is a joke by Knavey!

Long time forum members know Knavey posting such results, saying how unbelievable strange this or that result is and IIRC it is everytime a result out of the real war just typed in in the combat report.

Those posts have long been known as "Knavey´s"!

I say the most likely Knavey rant is the one about lunatic Americans who suddenly think they can load B-25 bombers on a flattop, actually bomb Japan less than six months after Pearl Harbor, and then land those bombers in China and Russia.  What a hoot!  No way THAT could happen IRL.

But, on the other hand, it isn't very likely it will happen in WitP either...

Just because I've been hanging around here with you guys for 8 years and playing this game for four years doesn't make me peculiar...We are absolutely normal, I'll have you know!!! Excuse me for a second. Yes, dear, what did you say. It's time to shower and shave. I did that last Saturday...... yes., dear...

Thanks, that makes more sense. Clever! However, as someone who is (still) looking into this game, I thought it was a legitimate complaint about the game that wasn't yet resolved by the publisher. Perhaps some kind of "PS: Just kidding." at the end would be appropriate. Then again, I am in the minority here.

On a related note, I visited the BB NC in Wilmington NC last September, highly recommended. I remember distinctly that it got one torpedo in the war... and now I understand the full context. Remarkable. It seems that every day I learn something strange and interesting about WW2, and Pacific in particular. (Part of the reason I hang out here without actually playing the game yet.)

Ok...I am not quitting, and as many have pointed out in this thread (and the others), this really did happen and just goes to show that sometimes, FACT is stranger than the coding that we have in our favorite game.

Consider all yourselves Knaveybacks for the next time...when we cross the line!  No more Knaveywogs in this thread.

And for the record, I never did (cross the line)...the Med just doesn't go that far south.
