Knavey -> I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 1:07:26 AM)

After careful consideration of all of the @$#%$%^ frustrations I have had with this game...THIS TAKES THE CAKE...NOT JUST THE CAKE...THE PIE, THE COOKIES, THE ICE CREAM SUNDAY, AND EVERY OTHER DESSERT UNDER THE SUN!

Wasp sunk, NC damaged, and the OB sunk also! ONE torpedo salvo...ONE! I can't get my subs to hit 1 ship 1 times, but this IJN crack shot gets 5 hits in one salvo!

I QUIT....MATRIX...FIX YOUR GAME! NO WAY THIS COULD HAVE HAPPENED IN REAL LIFE!!!!!! [:@][:@][:@]

stuman -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 1:11:20 AM)

That is indeed a hell of a sub attack. Seems you were massively unlucky.

Knavey -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 1:14:11 AM)

Unlucky doesn't even BEGIN to describe it!  [:@]

I am down to just the Hornet left for CVs...not good at all.  My opponent has to be salivating right now!

stuman -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 1:19:01 AM)

Well, if I could, I would loan you a few of mine, i am not even sure what to do with them yet . I must admit, that seems beyond utterly impossible.

Very unlucky..were those the only 3 DD escorts you had or are there more not shown in the report?

Knavey -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 1:23:35 AM)

I had about 10 escorts...not sure why they didn't show up.  Sometimes the whole TF doesn't get listed.

That sub is going to get away barely scratched.  At this rate, she is going to rack up enough kills to be an sub ACE before the end of the war.

RevRick -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 1:28:56 AM)

Oh, my. He's at it again....next he'll be complaining about the over-exaggerated range of the Devastator.

Canoerebel -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 1:29:06 AM)

Didn't this happen near the Santa Cruz Islands in 1942 or 1943?

Isn't this the same Knavey that periodically announces, "I've had it with this game; results like these just couldn't happen in real life!"

I swear it occurred to me three or four days ago that we hadn't had a "Knavey" in awhile.

Bliztk -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 1:30:54 AM)

The most effective torpedo salvo of the war [:'(]

But I think that WITP should model it different IIRC I-19 fired to a task force containing Wasp, and then the torpedoes traversed and hit NC and O`Brien that were following

Maybe two attacks ? [8|]

wdolson -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 1:46:10 AM)

I suspected Knavey was up to his tricks when I saw the topic title.  He picked a pretty well known historical attack for his example.  That was the best single torpedo salvo of the war.

Grotius -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 1:49:52 AM)

Heh, he should take a screenshot of the raid on Pearl Harbor and complain about that, too.

Q-Ball -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 1:52:38 AM)

Has he done one 1000lb sinking Akagi yet?

No - its true! I had the same thing happen - I swear!!!

khyberbill -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 2:03:18 AM)

As an ex-submariner I find the results completely achievable. This was a rather poor sub captain, he should have gotten all the ships in the task force. The trick is to get into the center of the task force and fire all tubes at once, turn 90 degrees, reload, fire again. No sweat.

And sink himself with the last fish performing a circular run! [:D]

Commander Stormwolf -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 2:31:42 AM)

Appears to be similar to the historical sub attack against the wasp..

infinite calmness is required to by the allied commander [8D]

Hornblower -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 3:02:29 AM)

shocking attack..  NAaaaaaaaaaa  Never happen...  Next thing we'll hear is that in the game someone sank the IJN Taiho with one torp...  Shocking..

Gem35 -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 3:10:27 AM)

What I want to know is what Feinder thinks of this....[;)]

wwengr -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 3:29:17 AM)

Cowardly sub captain!  He should have finished the Task Force with his guns!

borner -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 4:09:15 AM)

Nice way to twist a historical event!

Iridium -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 5:24:13 AM)

What, no Samar replays with, "WTF why didn't my BBs run over those puny DEs and CVEs?!!!" ?

[:D]

dhuffjr2 -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 5:28:24 AM)

Of note in the real action.  My old neighbors older brother lost his life on the Wasp.  He was a boilerman and was the first man in the Navy from Dayton Ohio to lose his life during WWII.  His mother and my neighbor were there and his mother broke the champagne bottle across the bow of the USS Dayton CL-105 at its launch.  Bud has the bottle shards contained in a net that the bottle is wrapped in prior to striking the vessel as well as some pictures.

John 3rd -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 5:37:57 AM)

Magnificent Attack!  Promote that Captain.

I seem to remember the exact SAME result prior to Santa Cruz...

stuman -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 5:52:46 AM)

Historically, a BB wasn't also hit was it ? At least I don't remember that.

On 15 September, sailing with Wasp and Hornet, North Carolina took a torpedo portside, 20 feet (6 m) below her waterline, and six of her men were killed. This torpedo originated from Japanese submarine I-19, and other torpedoes in the same salvo sank Wasp. Skillful damage control by the crew of the North Carolina and the excellence of her construction prevented disaster; a 5.6 degree list was righted in as many minutes, and she maintained her station in a formation at 26 knots.

stuman -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 6:04:30 AM)

Thx, and wow, I did not realize that. I was only aware of the Wasp's fate.

Iridium -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 6:10:58 AM)

quote:

While escorting a convoy of transports en route to Guadalcanal, joint TFs 17 and 18 were attacked by the Japanese submarines I-15 and I-19 on 15 September 1942. Wasp (CV-7) was sunk; North Carolina (BB-55) and O’Brien were damaged by torpedo attacks.

At 14:52 that afternoon O’Brien sighted smoke coming from Wasp. As a member of Hornet’s (CV-8) ASW screen she made an emergency turn to the right. At about 14:54, while accelerating and swinging right, her lookouts spotted a torpedo two points forward of the port beam 1000 yards (915 m) away. This torpedo missed close astern, but while attention was concentrated on it another “fish” hit the port bow.

The explosion did little local damage, but set up severe structural stresses through the ship. Able to proceed under her own power, the destroyer on 16 September reached Espiritu Santo, where Curtiss made temporary repairs. O’Brien sailed on 21 September for Noumea, New Caledonia, for further repairs by Argonne (AG-31) before proceeding 10 October to San Francisco.

She made Suva on 13 October and sailed once more on 16 October. The rate of leaking continued to increase, and on 18 October it was necessary for O’Brien to proceed to the nearest anchorage. Topside weight was jettisoned and preparations were made for abandoning ship, but it was still thought that the ship could be brought intact to Pago Pago. However at 06:00 on 19 October the bottom suddenly opened up considerably and the forward and after portions of the hull began to work independently. At 06:30 all hands except a salvage crew went over the side; and half an hour later the ship was abandoned entirely. Just before 08:00 she went under, after steaming almost 3,000 miles (5,500 km) since torpedoed. All the crew were saved.

Interesting struggle for the DD as well.

Think about the incredible high those Japanese submariners were probably on after that success. Then apparently they were all dead a little over one year later.

bradfordkay -> RE: I QUIT!!!! (1/14/2009 6:32:27 AM)

Iridium, that is a great photo. I think that it's the first time I've seen it.
