And hereīs the unit that was cut to pieces this turn. It started out the day with 99/102 and is now at 70/98!!! This means no more fighting for this unit for the next 8 weeks. In 8 months of war, none of my major ground units has been hit in one day like this one, the unit lost over 50% of itīs combat strenght in one day.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 07/19/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Colombo , at 14,24

Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 36
Ki-21 Sally x 35
Ki-49 Helen x 105

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 1 destroyed, 2 damaged

Allied ground losses:
12 casualties reported

Runway hits 41

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 11000 feet
10 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 11000 feet

itīs the usual cat and mouse play with the Allied having the ability to see aircraft transfers and the Japanese having to guess which airfield to attack out of a dozen. In this case I pretty much knew how this turn will look like and I ordered the attack on Colombo. As Colombo staged 100 Allied medium bombers with 40 Hurricanes on Cap yesterday, Miller knew I would bomb this base today, so he moved out all his bombers (with a couple of damaged bombers left behind) and moved in 4 or 5 dozen Hurricanes more to fly Cap. I donīt just want to destroy the medium bomber force but of course also the Allied fighters in India, so here we go. Unfortunately for us, parts of the attacking formations failed to locate the target and so only 60 out of 80 fighters and nearly all bombers arrived over the target meeting a pretty high number of fighter bombers on Cap. The Hurricanes are still far less effective than our high exp fighters but the only reason for that is the fact that Miller avoided every fight he could in the last months, therefor itīs still like in the opening month of the war. The enemy Cap still achieves a 1:3 a2a which isnīt that bad IMO, my Oscar sentai lost 25% of their veteran crews and this is what makes our fighter sentais being far less dangerous in no time.

IMO Miller just took on the fight far too late, my airforce could be far less dangerous already would he have taken on the fight earlier and would he have tried to fight on his terms, not mine. And that is possible for the Allied also early on.

In the end we destroyed a lot of Hurricanes today and a couple of such engagements more and the Allied resistance in the air will be totally broken.

Delhi is an urban hex, looks like THIS will become the next Allied POW camp. Iīm not interested in taking this base, would just take too long with too much losses. I will place a bgd here with some flak against ongoing air attacks and will just see this place starve... in 2 years or so! I guess Delhi has a sh*t load of supplies...

Ceylonīs airfields are more or less empty but with the troops there they will be repaired soon and could be used again. Iīve got no clue about the supply situation on Ceylon but I will move my air units soon away from Ceylon as I donīt have to surpress it when Iīve got no convoys moving to Madras. Those two BB TFs will soon shift their attention to Karachi...

Sianīs assault value is going UP every day so I guess it will take a couple of months until we will really be succesful here. Forts at level 9 and supply and nearly 4.000 av will be quite a nut to crack. But we HAVE time and supply wonīt last forever here... I guess the enemy does not have more than 10-15.000 supplies...

Ouch, consider the 22nd well and truly forked.

At least Hurricanes are still useless. When do Spits arrive, August?

Have spotted some Spits recently over Karachi but only in very small numbers. IMO itīs too late for the Allied in India to fight for air supremacy. So I guess all those spits from the pool will show up in Australia. Northern Australia has some 600-800 aircraft I guess, all four bases seem to be fully stacked.

Yup, he could have used about 300 of them a month ago. With all the variables involved and considering how important ground support is to combat in urban hexes, if he had them I doubt it would have slowed you down enough to stall you before you got to Karachi (assuming, of course, that you will) but your a/c losses would have been much more severe. Regardless of how costly it would have been, taking India will save you a huge amount of a/c in the long run.

There was only one right moment to use ALL of his aircraft in India: when the invasion began! Like Iīve mentioned earlier, KB canīt fight two or three land bases for more than one day and the carriers are very fragile as the one succesful attack on KB with Wellingtons showed. With the force Iīve brought to India Miller only had a real chance IMO during the first days of the invasion and the days I had to bring in the desperately needed supplies. And of course it didnīt help him to evacuate the whole Royal Navy. IMO another mistake as the RN ships can easily stand the fight against the Japanese ships and as soon as KB would be forced to retreat due to ongoing air attacks I would have also retreated most of my other ships.

Iīve only lost O N E ship during my invasion! It was the DD that was lost attacking the 4 RN PT boats. Miller just didnīt want to risk losses in aircraft it seems and therefor he lost India. Of course it could have been also that he lost a lot of ac and still lose India but in that case I guess a lot of IJN ships would be reefs now also, not to talk about how my KB daitais would look like.

I agree, taking India will save me hundreds, no, thousands of ac in the long run.

As it looks now, Miller has brought all his ships from India to Perth, including masses of aircraft as Perth shows a dark port and aircraft symbol. The four Northern Australian bases are bristling with aircraft also and Miller just asked me if our stacking hr goes for total ac at a base or if ac that are stood down donīt count. Well, itīs about total ac at the base of course, otherwise this would totally negate the effects of stacking limits. IMO the Allied counterattack will come out of Northern Australia directly into the area around Timor. Itīs the shortest way into important areas of the Empire but I can alos guarantee that it will be far bloodier then Miller will expect it to be. I will throw in the Kitchen sink against every attempt to attack in this area and my most important advantage will be the fact that I will have a dozen bases to support each other. He can surely advance but the question will be at what cost of ships, especially at what costs of aircraft carriers.

Wearing down the enemy carrier TFs with LBA and then throw in KB after two days is nowhere working better than in the area North of Timor. And damaged ships could go back to Soerabaja which will have a nav HQ, ARs and a level 9 port. This should give me a nice advantage.

And from Soerabaja, you're close to Singapore's repair yard.  Speaking of repair yards, there're a few in India too, some 80-100 if memory serves well, so I suppose this will be useful to you too, for non-priority repairs.

thereīs a very small one at Colombo, one small one at Bombay and a small one at Karachi. All of them wonīt be of much use I guess as it wonīt be worth sending a damaged ship that far. Iīve got more than enough repair yards in Japan where I have increased the ones at Osaka and Tokyo for repairs on major ships and the one at Nagoya which is homeport of the merchant shipping in Japan.

Repair yards are most times only really useful for smaller ships, AKs, APs, DDs to perhaps CLs. For BBs and CVs those repair yards donīt really help a lot, you just see a damaged BB sitting with 600 repair points alone at Osaka and none of the repair points are used. Perhaps itīs speeds up the repairs with 2-3 points of sys damage a month for BBs or CVs.

When you have enough repair points from a ship repair yard at a port to meet the durability of the ship there then thereīs only a die roll if one sys point is repaired. If not, the repair points are accumulated.

Once again I can only repeat myself: subs at base hexes or previously spotted subs are not more in danger of being attacked or hit than subs unspotted out in the wide ocean. I thought it would take longer to see the Allied bombers from Derby over Timor again. Go two messages of Mitchels failing to locate the target so I guess the strike should have been as big as the last one, with over 100 Mitchels. The defending Oscars do their best but we nearly lose one fighter on the ground for each bomber downed a2a. Around a dozen bombers turned back, some 50 dropped their bombs achieving a lousy hit rate. But 14 runway hits are enough to destroy 16 aircraft on the ground.

And just look at the amazing number of Allied bombers lost to ops once again... the high durability makes A2A better in Nikmod, but it also results in nearly no op losses for Allied bombers anymore. Those Mitchels are flying at max range and nearly all of them were damaged.

Op losses for Japanese medium bombers are the same as stock. Launch 100 of them to attack an undefended target two hexes away and you will lose 4 to ops...

When it comes down to place my ASW TFs in the same hexes as the enemy subs (which are moved daily) then Iīm not doing a that bad job as Iīve got nearly half a dozen of my TFs in the same hex as the SS every day but I canīt influence the performance of my ASW TFs... And the performance is

And Miller has just started another big sub offensive it seems as weīve spotted 6 more SS moving into the Tokyo area, pretty sure coming from Midway. So at the moment thereīs a dozen subs just off Japanīs major ports with nearly 50 ASW vessels (mostly DDs) hunting them. With no countable results...

In fact, being so close to Japan should be a suicide operation for the enemy subs at this date as Iīm using quite some assets to hunt them down. I guess nearly all of them are spotted by my ac on nav search every turn.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 07/26/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1071 encounters mine field at Midway (95,61)

Allied Ships
DM Preble, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

the day starts well! DM Preble hits a sub laid type 88 mine...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 64,44

Japanese Ships
DD Hatakaze
DD Asakaze
DD Kamikaze
DD Oboro
DD Sagiri
DD Ayanami

Allied Ships
SS O16

and we continue to fight Allied subs around Japan...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 65,44

Japanese Ships
DD Karukaya
DD Fuyo
DD Asagao
DD Sanae
DD Kuretake
DD Wakatake

Allied Ships
SS S-32, hits 3

a hit and two near misses. Not on fire, no heavy damage, probably FOW...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 62,44

Japanese Ships
APD APD-1, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
APD APD-46
APD APD-39
APD APD-37
APD APD-2
DD Yunagi

Allied Ships
SS O16, hits 6

then the Allied subs strike back and do better than my ASW TFs. The APD is sunk of course after two torp hits. In return 6 near misses... at least it was only one of the two APDs with the low ASW value of 2...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 100

Allied aircraft
Catalina I x 5
B-25C Mitchell x 230

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 12 destroyed, 44 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Catalina I: 3 damaged
B-25C Mitchell: 26 destroyed, 178 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
131 casualties reported
Guns lost 5

Airbase hits 28
Airbase supply hits 3
Runway hits 125

Aircraft Attacking:
25 x B-25C Mitchell bombing at 6000 feet

230 bomber??? 6.000 ft??? OMG! Strike on extended range from Derby, we scramble 100 fighters which is more than expected, some 144 fighters at the base. Around 5 dozen bombers turn back and only 2 dozen are shot down during the replay and so nearly 150 medium bomber drop their bomb load on the base resulting in heavy damage to the base facilities and the runway!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 49

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 133

Japanese aircraft losses

Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 92 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
45 casualties reported
Guns lost 4

Airbase hits 5
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 78

Aircraft Attacking:
12 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 12000 feet

And now the 4Es appear! Iīve been wondering for some time already why I havenīt seen massive 4E strikes so far and now here we go. This follow up strike coming from Broome destroys what was still intact at the base. Not a single B-17 was shot down during the replay, needless to say that Oscars canīt do anything against those bombers, they have enough problems downing the smaller US medium bombers. At the end of the turn the base is 68% damaged, the runway is 84% damaged. Weīve got 300+ eng at the base as weīre still building it up so I guess the base will be more or less operational in three days again. But for today the base is closed, there were no more fighters fyling Cap in the afternoon!

Thatīs bad news but I hope the enemy bombers suffered so much that we will be able to get the base operational sooner than the Allied bombers will be ready to fly ongoing attacks. For the moment, it doesnīt look good though...

These two attacks have been flown by mostly fresh and newly attacking US bomber groups, therefor only two of the BGs partially turned back. Their morale should be trashed now though!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Lautem , at 33,78

Japanese aircraft
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 121

Allied aircraft
PBY Catalina x 5
CW-21B Demon x 37

B-26B Marauder x 67

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 3 destroyed, 44 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
PBY Catalina: 4 damaged
CW-21B Demon: 36 destroyed
B-25C Mitchell: 7 destroyed, 54 damaged
B-26B Marauder: 6 destroyed, 55 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
70 casualties reported
Guns lost 5

Airbase hits 4
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 34

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x B-25C Mitchell bombing at 10000 feet
19 x B-26B Marauder bombing at 10000 feet

got a message of Marauders failing to locate the target so this strike should have been even bigger. Attack is coming from Darwin and we field some more fighters here as this base is in bigger threat of being attacked as itīs closer to Australia and the Mitchells attack at normal range here which is bad news as they drop quite some bombs on normal range. Itīs extended range for the Marauders though. Miller used obsolete Dutch fighters on escort and they donīt help him at all, they were just targets. I donīt want to see the Dutch squadronīs exp, it must be somewhere around 40.

Most of the Mitchells turned back after being under heavy attacks, but nearly all Marauders pressed through to the target. This attack didnīt do much damage but weīve lost half a dozen Oscars on the ground. The base is fully operational and I doubt we will see an attack here the next days as Miller will probably concentrate on Koepang now (at least thatīs what I would do).

What is getting a problem now is my Oscar pool, as I didnīt think about Miller starting this air offensive here and a couple of weeks ago I had 300 Oscars in the pool. I decided to switch over most of my Oscar production into something else as I want to mostly phase out the Oscars when the Tojo arrives (still at 11/42 ). At the moment I have only 62 Oscar factories and 160 remaining in the pools. If Miller does a couple of those attacks more, my Oscar pool could be totally depleted. I still hope to move the Tojo at least one month to get it in 10/42, this should then give me a better defensive weapon against those bombers. With Tojos I would have expected perhaps 1/3 bombers more shot down.

At the end of the day it looks like a Japanese victory though as we took down far more enemy ac than we lost. The question only is if Miller will be able to keep Koepang closed (I doubt it at the moment).

Wouldnīt the Demons have flown escort, the total losses would not look like as severe as they are now for the Allied. I expect Miller to fly more of the unescorted attacks until the P-38 shows up... in only two months...

OP losses of Allied bombers were once again... no day of the war so far has seen nearly as many Allied bombers flying an attack!

Miller does not care about flak at all. Two AA rgt and a big base force is defending the base but they donīt achieve much... the base is totally destroyed and we will lose all damaged fighters at the base. the assault on Karachi will begin soon and the IJN enters the scene! I feared Swordfish and Beaufort I torp bombers attacking my BBs while taking position South of Karachi and therefor I had 160 Zeros ordered to fly LRCAP out of Bombay to cover the battlewaggons. Range was 4 hexes and in two days we lost a dozen Zeros with 10 pilots to ops... The Swordfish didnīt attack and tonight our first bombardment destroys a dozen ac on the ground, causing not really a lot of damage to the airbase but hitting the support troops at Karachi hard...

which destroys a couple more aircraft and hits the airbase hard. The support troops are also hit hard again and the enemy lost 60 points for ground losses today!!!! Around 55 due to our bombardments here! I doubt that the airfield is closed and further bombardments will be dangerous but there is not much other possibility to really hurt the enemy here. Ahmadabad is a size 4 airfield and we will fly in medium bombers to attack the airfield of Karachi also.

Once again I just donīt understand Miller. Why on Earth isnīt he trying to defend Karachi with everything he has in regards of aircraft? He knows that I have BBs in India as Iīve bombarded Ceylon a couple of times. He should put up every fighter or fighter bomber he has over Karachi and bring in every Beaufort I and Swordfish, no matter how many losses he suffers! No, he has dispersed his aircraft all over India and starts moving them to China also.

Well, serves me good! As soon as the enemy base forces are worn down due to my naval bombardments I can use my medium bombers to fly ground attacks on the inf units there. Recon has spotted 10 units, some 35.000 troops at Karachi so it will pretty much look like the assault on Madras I guess.

We are currently building up Malir (base one hex SE of Karachi) to have a bigger airfield there, but itīs only a 1(1) at the moment and bringing it to 3 or 4 will take weeks. Would be a nice base to fly the ground attacks as I fear that flying from Ahmadabad (6 hexes) will just end up in a hundred op losses each month.

same here, I just donīt understand it. Why doesnīt Miller order his Hurricanes to fly Cap? Even if they will get shot down at a 1:3 - 1:6 kill rate, wouldnīt that be better than to just being bombed on the ground?

Miller moved two or three squadrons of Blenheim to China, attacking my troop concentrations at Kweiyang. He asked me if there are any restrictions against moving the RAF into China and Iīve told him that I think there shouldnīt be any restrictions as soon as he lost most of his airfields in India.

If the RAF shows up in China in real numbers then this will only end in one Japanese reaction: ground offensives until the last Allied base (except Chungking which is impossible to be conquered) falls. This would change my plan to only reduce the Chinese to an area out of which they canīt mount a major ground offensive later on and the new plan would be: conquer all staging bases of Allied aircraft in China to prevent an ongoing air offensive out of Allied held territory.

So I guess it would be counterproductive for Miller to move the whole RAF into China, but he isnīt aware of my new plan.

My tank rgts, an inf div and an AA rgt are moving on the rail away from Delhi towards Lucknow. I have also two inf units at Hyderabad that are moving towards Diamond Harbour now, together with support troops. This should mean that some 2500 assault points will try to mop up the bases around Calcutta where I mostly expect only base forces. Calcutta is urban so perhaps this will be just the next Allied POW camp and I have to order a div to siege the town.

wow, thats a intense air battle N of australia in this early stage of the war.

about the oscars poor preformance against allied bombers:

this should change when better japs army fighters tony, tojo, frank.... enter service.

i remember some intresting AAR about allied B-17 and B-24 attacking lae airfield late 1943 and getting a bloody nose and extremly huge A2A loses from the japanese CAP there. so hold out, chris...you will replace your "paper flyers" soon with real fighters.

in my own PBEM as the japanese, i am in february 1942 now and have a production rate of around 180 zeros, 95 oscars, 65 bettys 60 kates 60 vals and 24 emilys. i scrolled through japanese fighters and find, that the J2M jack is an excellent fighter and available in a acceptable time, so i increased research for this plane. whats your opinion about the jack? from the stats, it looks like a very good fighter to defend japanese bases (high fier power, high survivibility) until georges are available.

unfortunately it wonīt be like in the AAR youīve mentioned as in Nikmod the Allied bombers (especially the heavy bombers) wonīt be butchered in mid 43 as the only "better" fighter I will have until late 43 will be the Tojo and with 4 MGs it is far from being a killer. It should do better than the Oscar though, I expect 1/4-1/3 enemy losses more when attacking from long range. But the Tojo is very poor in fighting enemy fighters as it has a very low maneuverability in Nikmod. Itīs only 28 IIRC and thatīs VERY low.

But I donīt have anything else I could use, the first good figther will be the Tony sometime later 43. It has an armor rating of 2 a good man, range 6 and itīs the first Japanese fighter with a gun value of 10. With good pilots itīs a match for Hellcats but the Lightning will eat it alive with equal pilots, I donīt want to talk about the Corsair...

Well, Iīve got no experience with the Jack in Nikmod! It will arrive early 44!! Until then I will have to use the A6M5 as land based IJN fighter and Iīm sure they will get totally shredded from mid 43 on, no matter if I employ good pilots or not. It will be a massacre I guess, probably worse than in stock for me. The George will arrive at nearly the same date as the Jack. The Jack and George are the first Japanese fighter with a gun value of 12, the Frank has also 12 but wonīt arrive before mid 44. Lol, it will be bloody...

The good news of the day: our first TK division arrived today! It will soon be bought out of the restricted command, it only costs some 1200 pp and thatīs very cheap. No idea why a TK div with nearly 400 assault points costs only 1200 pp and an Inf div costs 3300 pp. Oversight?

I will get another TK div within the next three months. The two TK div would have been of great use in India, Iīm unsure where to use them when being bought out of restricted command. The first area that is suitable for tanks in the direction of an expected Allied assault would be Java but I hope this wonīt happen before late 43 at the earliest! I have to make a stand South of Kendari! So in fact, Iīm not allowed to lose more than two bases there! LOL

My bombers are just too fragile... and the fighters too...

TF 48 troops unloading over beach at Maumere, 28,73

Japanese ground losses:
315 casualties reported

Maumere is 4 hexes North of Koepang and will be one of the key bases for our defense in this area.

The last two days the enemy has not flown any attacks on Koepang and I now wonder what his attacks were worth. Donīt know if he halted the attacks or if he has trouble to launch them. If the attacks were only to destroy our fighters then I donīt think itīs worth his losses, if the attacks were to close the base then it will fail if there arenīt massive strikes in the next days. The airfield is open again but the base facilities are still severly damaged and therefor I wonīt move in fighters as they would just get damaged from flying Cap.

Allied max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Japanese assault odds: 15 to 1 (fort level 0)

Japanese forces CAPTURE Maumere base !!!

Maumere will be an important base that will aid the defense of Timor... the base can only be reached by Allied 4E bombers out of Northern Australia. If the Allied attack out of Northern Australia then I doubt that the attack will go directly to Timor. Would be too bloody IMO and there are other possibilities...

Naval bombardment of Karachi, at 21,3

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
F-5A Lightning: 1 destroyed
Swordfish: 1 destroyed

Japanese Ships

Allied Ships

Allied ground losses:
1351 casualties reported
Guns lost 8

Airbase hits 5
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 39
Port hits 5
Port supply hits 1

guess we will see a couple of naval bombardments more in this area. Not much of a problem to shuttle the BBs between Bombay and Karachi. Iīm not a fan of those daily bombardments but I donīt feel for the Allied as Iīm sure I will see many, many more nukes at my bases as Miller perfectly knows how to get nukes...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1014 encounters mine field at Midway (95,61)

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Lae at 54,87

Japanese Ships
AK Dainiti Maru

Allied Ships
SS Seadragon

Seadragon has been sitting here for weeks already, being attacked by aircraft several times but only missed. Thatīs no reason to pull the sub out of this hex for Miller, the damn bastard is just waiting there in total safety until my convoy shows up. The torps missed though and my 12 ship TF is unloading 6 construction btn now...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 48,43

Japanese Ships
DD Yugiri, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage
DD Asanagi
DD Hayate
DD Oite
DD Amagiri
DD Asagiri

Allied Ships
SS Wahoo, hits 2

Wahoo has also been spotted by air search several times and today my ASW TF arrives, resulting in a probably sunk DD. We achieve a hit and a near miss that took out some of the forward torp tubes. Guess Wahoo has acomplished her mission with sinking a DD... Yugiri will try to make Takao, a level 7 port with a nav HQ some 4 hexes away but it will take two turns to get there. With flt at 64 and fire at 33 there is nearly no hope for the destroyer...

9 x Ki-21 Sally bombing at 16000 feet

a lonely Hurricane meets our incoming strike and is shot down immediately. Flak fire is still heavy and I hope not to be forced to fly those attacks often. We lose 4 bombers and 3 Oscars to ops. Donīt know why the Oscars crashed, they are highly experienced and had 0 fat. Of course all three Oscar pilots are dead...

Another try, another 4 near misses... Wahoo will surely move out full speed next turn. Whenever my DDs are near a sub, Miller moves them at full speed away.

Ground combat at Yenen

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 161997 troops, 1792 guns, 21 vehicles, Assault Value = 3342

Japanese ground losses:
4380 casualties reported
Guns lost 143
Vehicles lost 6

Allied ground losses:
845 casualties reported
Guns lost 25

looks like all I get in China are shredded divisions now. The Chinese get a super adjusted av, even if there werenīt a high fort level. Supply canīt be an issue at all it seems! My leading division is cut down with over 30% disabled and 3% dead... we do nearly no damage on the other side...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Sian

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 14267 troops, 458 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 2673

Defending force 123278 troops, 822 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 3792

Attacking force 22695 troops, 266 guns, 7 vehicles, Assault Value = 2602

Defending force 238969 troops, 1371 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 6189

OMG, looks like I have to rethink my plans for China! I doubt that I will ever be able to break this Chinese stronghold! Level 9 forts and a wooden hex, it wouldnīt matter if those defenders would be out of supply I guess and at the moment theyīre surely far away from being out of supply... Iīm a bit shocked to see a that high Chinese assault value. Iīm wondering why Miller isnīt trying to kick me out of the hex. If he would succeed, he could retake the whole South as I donīt have strong units down there with our blocking force at Chungking and the major offensives in the North. Iīm moving in another division to Kweiyang which is in position just one hex South of the base.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Ahmadabad

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 39839 troops, 495 guns, 7 vehicles, Assault Value = 2567

Defending force 7850 troops, 78 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 178

Japanese max assault: 779 - adjusted assault: 489

Allied max defense: 173 - adjusted defense: 28

Japanese assault odds: 17 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
93 casualties reported
Guns lost 4
Vehicles lost 1

Allied ground losses:
347 casualties reported
Guns lost 14

Defeated Allied Units Retreating!

two rgt of the 20th Indian division entered Ahmadabad and we kick them towards Karachi. Would have been better for Miller to try to move them there over the clear hexes off the railway instead of entering Ahmadabad. Those two rgts could have been a major help for the defense of Karachi. I will enter the base soon to see what is really defending the most important base of India... Iīm sure that there will arrive a couple of units there until I will be able to take the base, hopefully no division will arrive. I have to attack as soon as possible!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Myitkyina

Japanese Bombardment attack

Weīve just entered August and itīs a bloody day today!

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/02/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1016 encounters mine field at Midway (95,61)

Allied Ships
DMS Southard

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 143
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 116

Allied aircraft
Catalina I x 1
Hudson I x 6
B-25C Mitchell x 119

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 15 damaged
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 26 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Catalina I: 1 damaged
Hudson I: 6 destroyed
B-25C Mitchell: 24 destroyed, 71 damaged

Koepangīs airfield went 100% operational again and so I moved in 150 Oscars again which of course turned the airfield symbol during the Allied turn from light red into DARK red and I knew this would immediately attract Allied bombers en masse as it seems to be obvious that Miller isnīt trying to constantly keep my base closed but to primarily destroy more of my fighters on the ground than he loses bombers with UNESCORTED strikes. Would I only have my land based fighters here then this is NO problem in Nikmod, you will in the long run always lose more fighters during unescorted bomber strikes than your enemy loses bombers.

But! We moved in Oscars and some Zeros to Koepang and moved KB into position one hex North of Koepang to fly LRCAP with 70% of KBīs fighters. This resulted in the biggest Japanese Cap so far in the war. Unfortunately the game acts more than weird again and I think there is only a fixed number of fighters that can attack, only ALL Oscars and the first two Zero daitais attacked! F O U R other Zero daitais (the last four that show up during the replay) only showed up as climbing, attacking and... nothing happend. Then the first Oscar sentai showed up again, climbing, attacking... firing... next Oscar, climbing, attacking, firing... and so on... two Zero daitais attacked, but nearly 100 Zeros did NOTHING! Just nothing! Thereīs something not working but hey, this attack was shredded and all enemy bombers turned back. Would have all Zeros attacked, the enemy losses would be higher though, as the Zero which carries a pair of cannon kills about 1/3 more bombers than the MG only armed Oscar...

Miller surely was prepared to meet 100+ Oscars but I guess he was surprised to see 143 Zeros!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Koepang , at 28,77

Japanese aircraft
A6M2 Zero x 110
Ki-43-Ic Oscar x 116

Allied aircraft
B-17E Fortress x 84

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M2 Zero: 27 damaged
Ki-43-Ic Oscar: 14 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
B-17E Fortress: 15 destroyed, 54 damaged

Aircraft Attacking:
11 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 12000 feet
3 x B-17E Fortress bombing at 12000 feet

Not surprising, also the 4Es from Broome attacked at 12 hexes range. Also this engagement took forever and while the Oscars werenīt able to take down a single B-17, the (again only) 50 Zeros that attacked achieve a very good kill rate - for Nikmod. Most of the high exp carrier based Zero daitais again only were climbing, attacking... NOTHING!!

In the end, this day was a clear victory for us with a huge number of bombers lost in one day. Again, for Nikmod as this would just be another usual kill rate for stock. No, not usual, it would be an unusual LOW kill rate for stock!

My plan worked as Miller seemed a bit depressive as he could not break through my Cap this time. Only 14 B-17 dropped some bombs which all failed to hit something. But and thatīs a big but, we canīt keep KB in the area to fly LRCAP all the time. As soon as I will have "only" 120 Oscars on Cap, the Allied bombers will fly in again, will lose 20 bombers and then will destroy 100 Oscars on the ground the within the following three days, so itīs a hopeless fight.

Unbelievable that Miller ordered his bombers to attack again after the defeat yesterday. We damage 51 heavy bombers and 2 are lost... This is more than depressing and gives the Allied abilities to crush the Japanese without to fear any losses as they are using nearly undestructable super bombers in Nikmod. Well, two bombers lost is too low IMO. A dozen shot down would be ok IMO, even though there are Oscars in the attack, there are also Zeros and nearly 100 cannon armed Zeros should be able to take down more than 2 B-17.

Derby which is the staging base for the Mitchells showed a dark airfield symbol also today and Iīm sure that Miller transfered his damaged bombers out, better say the complete trashed squadrons from yesterday, and replaced them with 200 fresh bombers to see them attack today, but it seems that weather prevented an attack.

No matter if I place 250 fighters (stacking limit) at Koepang, when Miller decides to send 600 unescorted bombers in two or three days then I will lose, no matter if we shoot down 20 or 40. In the end we would probably take down 80 bombers but would lose 250 fighter and the base would be closed again.

a day with heavy ASW action...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 08/05/42

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 29,67

Japanese Ships
PC Shonan Maru #17
PC Shonan Maru #6
PC Kyo Maru #12
PC Kyo Maru #13
PC Shonan Maru #1
PC Shonan Maru #7

Allied Ships

Japanese Ships
DD Matsukaze
DD Harukaze
DD Ushio
DD Sazanami
DD Akebono
DD Murakumo

Allied Ships
SS Flying Fish, hits 3, on fire

Flying Fish has been sitting at Makin for nearly a week and today my DDs showed up achieving two hits and a near miss with Type 91 DCs. First I thought it would be FOW as two hits didnīt even cause heavy damage but it seems we were very lucky during the "adjust ship damage phase" and before dawn we got the message that the sub is going down with itīs captain!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 50,48

Japanese Ships
PC Ch 13
PC Ch 3
PC Ch 2
PC Ch 1
PC Kyo Maru #2
PC Fumi Maru

Allied Ships
SS Whale

and the ASW goes on...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
here comes the dayīs highlight...

Naval bombardment of Darwin, at 36,84

Allied aircraft
no flights

Allied aircraft losses
B-26B Marauder: 11 destroyed
PBY Catalina: 3 destroyed
P-40B Tomahawk: 6 destroyed
Kittyhawk I: 5 destroyed

Japanese Ships
CA Kako

CA Kinugasa
CA Aoba
CA Mikuma
CA Mogami

Allied ground losses:
591 casualties reported
Guns lost 12

Airbase hits 16
Airbase supply hits 2
Runway hits 82

daily recon from Lautern showed the airfield stacked to itīs limits and I hoped to catch a lot of bombers, especially Mitchells, perhaps some B-17s. No Mitchells and no 4Es at the base but some Marauders and P-40B which is also nice as those fighters could reach Lautern from Darwin.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Manila , at 43,52

Allied aircraft losses
Kittyhawk I: 7 destroyed
P-40B Tomahawk: 6 destroyed
B-26B Marauder: 6 destroyed

Airbase hits 7
Airbase supply hits 1
Runway hits 19

Aircraft Attacking:
6 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 16000 feet

we also moved 200 medium bombers to Lautern and then... "§%&"!$§%&$$!!!

2/3 of my strike failed to locate the target! We could have destroyed a hundred ac more with a full strike I guess as only 19 hits destroyed a lot of ac...

in the end it was a succesful day, not much more than annoying for the Allied though and we seem to be once again the unbeatable champion of the world in op losses... Compare that with the two B-17 lost when 51 are damaged...

of our total ac lost so far, about 60% are op losses. Of the total Allied ac lost so far, about 15% are op losses. The Allied lost twice as many ac as we did, which means we suffer twice the op losses every time...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

and here comes the Allied success of this turn, the small AK is dead, happened North of Timor, the escorts perform like they always do...

what was positive is the fact that TWO Allied subs off Lae were hit by Helen on nav search. Amazing, there are three sentais set on 10% nav search, so max 18 bombers are on search and they achieved two hits on subs today...

Defending force 40668 troops, 275 guns, 115 vehicles, Assault Value = 673

our first inf units have entered Karachi... see below what is defending this base. The enemyīs assault value is near what was expected, there are not really a lot base forces there but there must also be 3 HQs at the base as we get recon about 11 units. I just have to hope that there wonīt be a division arriving within the next months as it will be a bloody battle to wear the defenders down, key will be A2G attacks again I guess. I have some 3000 assault points in the North to start the attacks soon, Iīm unsure if it was a good idea to send troops South to take care of the dozens of Allied units there. I thought this would be a must to prevent them from attacking the empty territory further West and to prevent them in trying to break through to Karachi. As it looks now, Miller keeps all his troops just static in their current positions.

like at our last major air attacks, the attack on Darwin, also here the bigger part of the strike fails to locate the target, of course 50% of our escort didnīt show up. This meant that with the usual never ending Allied bounce that our high exp Oscars were quite outnumbered and had a hard time against the flying Chinese crap... the enemy bombers were out bombing and we hit... nothing...

this can be considered a Chinese victory here...
