has anyone ever seen a game on the EiA rules system covering the US civil war? It would seem to lend itself rather well,. except what leaders arrive when, and what corps commanders that could have been army commanders like many French leaders ( I.E. Reynolds for the union) arrive.

Also, being just 4 years long may be an issue.

Victory Games Civil War is perhaps the best box game that covers the era.

I am not sure how well a Civil War version of EiA could work, the political phase, minor countries and the like wouldn't be included...

We have done some reserach here and it could certainly be done BUT this would include very little diplomacy. The most important diplomacy would certainly be the South trying to sway Europe to their side but this would be difficult and repetitive after a while.

Where EiA is a diplomatic game with a little war, this would be a war game with a little diplomacy.

I'd agree generally here.  VG's old Civil War game did the best job of providing leader specific chrome, but EIA is a bad fit for the ACW.

Now, as relates to the thread I started today, I played the old player-created 1740 variant of EIA PBEM back in the late 90's and that era is perfectly suited to EIA.  Frankly, EIA is a Grand Strategy System Simulator perfectly suited for simulating conflict in europe from 1675 ish-1815.

I've always wanted to see a WW0 (World War Zero) game. It would be an alternate history game. Basically start at the US Civil War or Franco-Prussian War time frame. You'd need to have some "sides", so it may be closer to WWII with axis and allies, than EIA. (Though to be honest, the whole Napoleonic Wars time period was a coalition led by England vs. France and minors.) So, it would be

1861

USA
Russia
Austria
Prussian States
India Uprising
Irish Uprising
Slave Revolt

vs

CSA
Britain (and Commonwealth)
France
Ottomans
Mexico
Mormon Uprising (nod to Harry Turtledove)

Italy and Spain could go either way.

Then add in Africa, Asia, and South America issues and uprisings.

OR
to not have a central European block (Prussia, Austria, Russia) , since Prus and Aus were hostile at this time AND to have a wider dispersal of navies (Eng vs France and Russia); one could do it this way.

1861

USA
France
Russia
Prussian States
India Uprising
Irish Uprising
Slave Revolt

vs

CSA
Britain (and Commonwealth)
Austria
Ottomans
Mexico
Mormon Uprising (nod to Harry Turtledove)

Italy and Spain could go either way.

Then add in Africa, Asia, and South America issues and uprisings.

OR

1861

USA
vs
CSA

Britain (and Commonwealth) come in on side of the South, which causes Russians to support the North. (There were actually Russian warships in NY at this time...just in case.) The rest then decide what they want.

France
Prussian States
Austria
Ottomans
Mexico
Italy
Spain

Then add in Africa, Asia, and South America issues and uprisings.

Anyway, we thought about doing this as a miniatures campaign. It always looked like fun. It would involve a lot of diplomacy. 1870 (Franco-Prussian War) start vary a bit, but you can follow the idea.

Back to EiANW...

My issue with EiA's viability as a Grand Strategic construct post 1815 is that the political system of europe had changed so radically due to the "release from the bottle" of the two genies of nationalism and industrialism, that the mechanics of the system (use of PP's, etc.) hold no relevance to the era post 1861.

It does work well for conflict during the Age of Reason and the Napoleonic Wars.

I agree with post-Napoleon, but I think it's similar pre Napoleonic era. To be honest without the corps structure, basically there were armies moving around. Even pre-1809ish the Austrians, Prussians, Brits and Russians moved in blocks. The Austrians had a large enough force to have several armies, ie. Italy, Rhein, etc, but they were not corps in any sense of the word.

So, it works well with Napoleonic, ok pre Nap and not so well post Nap.

A nice project to consider would be AH's Kingmaker board game. Lots of similarities with seven factions, area movement, field combats and sieges, etc.

There was an "America in Arms" expansion made for EiH. It covered the Americas during the time of the Napoleonic wars. I never played it, but it looked pretty cool.

Wait. Found it. It's here: http://www.geocities.com/davidbofinger/eia.htm

It was ok, but the difficulty was that the sizes of the forces in America were less than that of a big corps, I believe. It could have used some work and made for an interesting game. However, we only used it once, and I'm not sure that we even finished that game. It could be fleshed out.

Was this the one that had a small section also in India or was that extra?
