Well, since Ron hasn't done it for this weekend, and we still have one weekend to go through, I thought I'd do it. But all of you are far too good on WWII trivia and histrical trivia, so I will switch from trivia to puzzles. I have four:

1. Looking at this calculation below, and assuming that each unique letter represent a unique digit from 0-9, can you tell me what 4-digit number ABCD represents (there is only one possibility):

ABCD x 9 = DBCA

2. Pick any three digit number where the first digit and the last digit are not the same. Now reverse the digits and subtract the smaller number from the larger. Take the result and reverse its 3 digits (using leading zeros if necessary) and add this reversed number to the result of the subtraction. What is your final result?


3. Assuming the letters A-K represent the first 11 prime numbers in their order from smallest to largest. A prime number is only divisible by itself or 1. Therefore 1 is the smallest prime and is represented by A. What is the value X obtained from the calculation below:

(A*B*C-D)*E*F*G+H+I+J+K = X

Using the numbering system from question number 3, add J years to the year of the battle of Hastings. What is your result? (OK, there's your token historical battle question.)


If you get the answers, rather than post them, so that everyone can have a chance to figure them out, just post a reply which indicates as subtly as you can that you have figured them out correctly.

Oh too bad she did a hornblower on you. Thats what you get when you post hotspur of moment posts. Can't see the trees in the Forrester. (We went from Horatio Alger to Horatio Hornblower rather quickly but it was *Joes Luck*and*Bound to Rise**Sink or Swim**Slow and Sure* that *Tattered Tom* would point it out. Being a lawyer and a trained parser and twister of words, this test is quite easy - or at least three of the four questions are, anyway.

The answer to the first question is no.

A person's answers to the second and fourth questions are always right, regardless of what answer they provide.

Now the third question actually requires some mathematical knowledge. 1089, could you refresh my memory on the rule of whatever it was that dictated whether you add first or multiply first when there are no parentheses? You multiply first, don't you? For example, A - B * C is calculated the same as A - (B * C), right? If so, I get a number that doesn't seem to have much significance, and there is no hint I can give you as to what I got.

All right. I'll deal with each point in order:

The answer to the firat question will be yes, when you bother with the rest.

Your second statement is incorrect. Did you try the second question with your own example? The fourth has a specific answer, the value of J is set in problem three, as is indicated.

As for problem 3, parentheses first, then multiply, last add. Perhaps you should re-calculate. I think the answer has a lot of significance. :D

It's pretty easy. It was a lot harder to make up the questions, than it will be for anyone to get the right answers. The reason why might be apparent when you solve them. Don't start with number one, it will be easier to solve at the end.

I believe you can! A calculator makes it easy, doesn't it? For those who do not have a calculator, I'll let you know that I have cleverly hidden all the answers on various threads on the UV forum. ;)

My point was that you did not ask for the correct mathematical answer, you asked what my result was. Regardless of whether I get the correct mathematical result, which I surely will not, I have still answered your question.

Yes, I see what the answer for number 4 is, 1089.

As for number three, I have consistently come up with 19,550, which has no relevance to me. What am I doing wrong? I go:

(1*3*5 - 7) 11*13*17 + 19 + 23 + 29 + 31 or:

(8) * 2,431 + 102 or:

19,448 + 102 = 19,550 ????

Perhaps the real question is why am I messing with this on a Saturday when I should be mowing the lawn?

You forgot that 2 is a prime number. As for your last question, I don't know...

Ok, so it was merely a self-advertisement and thinly veiled attempt to up my post count, but it took me a while to make up the questions. So that is why it had to do with math, since I hadn't picked a handle that was WWII related. Well, I enjoyed it and thanks to those that participated!
