this game will never bem nearly in a state without serious bugs. I´m not talking about some minor glitches but bugs that just ruin every fun playing this crap. Guess where this fast transport TF ended up today! 2 (in words: T W O) hexes North of Derby!!!! It is supposed to move in and out at night, go into position the day before (means 6 hexes off the target). Well, the borked movement routine (as borked as the crappy programmed routine that´s responsible for the ground movement) just place it two hexes off Derby, a base that is full of Allied LBA. The only reason we didn´t lose the whole damned TF was the fact that the bombers at Broome were set to ground attacks and Derby was clouded in in the morning.

I have no problems losing ships due to my faults or stupidity, but losing a light cruiser due to a fridging game bug is just a f*cking joke...

Yubari lies dead in the water with 99 sys, 64 flt and 43 fire. It doesn´t even take more air attacks, the ship is dead anyway... guess it will be finished off tomorrow... the first cruiser I lose in the war... lost due to a bug...

fast transport... and fast transports do the same as surface combat and naval bombardment TFs: they stay off their destination at their max range and then go in at night to be out of LBA range during the day again. In this case the TF just parked itself off a base with major LBA without any reason to do so. Fully fueled the day before and all orders were correctly given. Wasn´t my fault to lose Yubari...

the enemy will kick us off the island with bombardments only... looks like it would be best to just land a dozen art units to kill the enemy with Verdun style artillery attacks...

With the front at Wyndham and the allied bomber stacks at the other bases there I was actually just wondering where these ships were headed.

the two unit fragments didn´t have much of a chance... good example of the myth that you don´t have to capture oil/resources early because they are stored by the Allied for you. They AREN´T! Bulla has 70 resources and was producing resources for 15 months now. So there should be over 30.000 resources now. How many did we capture? 2800! That´s a myth folks, capture your resources and oil asap, the Allied don´t store them for you... and no, Miller did NOT move them out...

going to knock out Derby and Wyndham. We will keep using our CAs (as long as they can move 6 hexes at least), then we will switch over to using the fast BBs together with the cruisers (when they can only move 5 hexes due to sys damage). And when the enemy´s airfields at Broome and Derby are knocked out we can also use KB´s Kates to keep them damaged. This could enable us to move in AKs to drop off supplies for our tanks. Mines are the biggest threat at the moment, they damage our ships and the SBDs and torp bombers kill our ships afterwards...

but hey, Miller should fly more attacks like this one, it came from Wyndham! How much supply is being used by 200 4Es for an attack? 400? 600? 800? If I were Miller, I would not burn my precious supply in Wyndham for absolutely senseless attacks on an empty airfield on Timor.

And here are the enemy troops at Derby. It doesn´t look that bad, especially the fact that two of the Allied bgd are in the lead of the troop stack, so my attack will hit those two bgds hard. All we need are supplies, if we get supplies to our tanks we will finish off Derby, even if the enemy is sitting behind level 9 forts. At least I hope so...

Expected Miller to set his bombers at Wyndham on nav attack again and as Darwin is only 7 hexes away (closer than my ships going to Derby or the ships at Koepang) the bombers show up unescorted to meet a crappy Cap. I´ve got 289 fighters on Cap there, we see 133 in the air (Cap is set to 90% ). Again not even 50% and this really starts to suck...

The enemy bomber crews´ morale is low and all turn back. This was amazing as they had quite some time to rest.

Ouch, now you may rant as much as you want.  Three DDs on one day, that's serious loss.

Are there any Japanese tanks in the Pacific that you DON'T have at Derby?

one of the good examples of how dumb this game engine is (or how poor the programming was). There are two big spotted enemy TFs outside of Upolu (means without CAP!!!) and what is attacked? The TF that is capped... stupid... couple of torp hits but I doubt that even one AK will sink. Not worth losing half a dozen high exp Naval pilots... 31 out of 54 Betties launched...

Miller moves four US Army divs into the railroad crossing South of Darwin. I have enough divisions to counter him... 4 divisions are not threat for us, just a little diversion... in the last couple of days and within the next week we will have moved in 3 new divisions alone by ship to Darwin... it remains the same, all depends on the supply level of Wyndham. As soon as they run out of supplies, they will be dead...

another three Fortresses attack from Broome but achieve nothing. Broome is now the major airbase in the area and is fully stacked, means there are 400 aircraft. Recon says there are more than 700 but I guess this is wrong recon and Paul isn´t violating the stacking rule. Looks like I will soon have to visit Broome with my cruisers...

what the hell is going on here? Another 5000 troops more and the av went up by 200+ in one day! as they are not coming from Derby, they must be picked up from Lautern. Great, being picked up with Dakotas from a totally trashed airfield there but I can´t use patrol ac to pick up troops from Pago Pago. While my patrols land on water and can´t pick up troops from the damaged airfield there, Miller seems to be able to pick up troops from a totally damaged airfield with his transports... laughable stupid...

If I could have been sure about the BBs nuking the enemy support troops at the base (more than two dozen I guess) then I would have set my bombers to attack lower but two dozen more hits and over a dozen more ac destroyed on the ground (fow, you have to double those ac torched on the ground)... my bombers are coming from Darwin...

I just can´t believe it... why on earth is this attack again going in against a TF at Upolu when we spot an uncapped big TF East of Pago Pago and another one West of it. Both were in range also... We lose more precious Zero pilots, perhaps we sunk two AKs today. The attack two days ago and today scored hits but we haven´t got a single message of an enemy AK going down so far...

another stupid attack in the afternooon, this time even worse as the Zero pilots now have fatigue over 40. There should be a toggle for the player if you want to attack shipping in enemy ports as the game engine is just too dumb (or the programmer...)

you should have a couple of choices. Attack spotted carriers? Attack shipping at enemy bases? Attack all shipping? etc... those should be doable orders and would make sense. Of course it could also result in bombers not attacking AKs if they get misidentified but that wouldn´t be that bad...

it´s so stupid... it´s so stupid... it´s so stupid... it just pisses me off...

naval bombardments is one of those stories in WITP. While I was used to hear from AFB how crappy it is that the IJN is hardcoded to achieve naval bombardment nukes ALL the time, this AAR clearly proves that it isn´t like this. Heck, when you look at the dozen up to a hundred hits the Allied achieve with EVERY of their attacks then it seems to prove that not the IJN is hardcoded to get nuke bombardments but the Allied. Or it´s all just about dumb luck and I´m too stupid to get lucky die rolls. While I hit mines 4 times out of 5 times I enter a base with a single or some more mines the enemy does not, even if he enters hexes with thousands of mines... on the other hand, he has been doing nukes since the beginning of this campaign...

Being in a hex with Allied ASW forces is most times bad news for my subs and if I would employ them like I did near Pago Pago, I would loses dozens of them in two weeks. 3 subs were sunk, another half a dozen damaged. moved out the Tojos from Koepang and sent in IJA medium bombers instead (operating at max range) to go in with 81 land based Zeroes. Ask me how I looked like when I saw 167 Zeros as escorts! Mini KB returned to Koepang and even though it is set to 80% Cap, it launched 90%+ of it´s fighters to escort this strike... I hate those glitches... not the first time I see this... my naval bombardments were pretty useless, the only effect they have is that Miller always moves out everything that can fly the day when he sees my TFs going into position and therefore I knew I could bomb the base today without having to fear to meet 200 fighters on Cap. Our escorts did an excellent job and the bombers achieved a nice hit rate. We had a 10:1 kill rate A2A today, the enemy did NOT bounce us for the whole engagement. Note the C-47 again, this means bad news, more about that later on...

another strike coming in at max escort range for the Zeros, flak fire was only pathetic, at least the enemy base forces got disrupted by my naval bombardments. This seems to be the only effect. We achieved 238 hits on the airfield today BUT the damned airfield was NOT closed in the afternoon. Recon aircraft reported dozens of Allied fighters on Cap in the afternoon again. this is what I meant with C-47 and bad news... the shock attack wasn´t bad but Miller moves whole divisions around in two days with his hundreds of transports he has in Northern Australia. And due to the fact that my naval bombardments are totally useless I can´t do anything about it. I knock out one base for two days, he uses the other two. On the third day he can use all three bases again... The fact that he seems to be able to pick up troops from 100% damaged airfields doesn´t make it any better...

and here comes the screenshot of the day! It looks like Miller is going in for his next invasion. At the moment I´m thinking about an attack on Thursday Island as he tried to grab it with paras earlier and he knows I only have a nav guard and a base force there. Could of course also be an attack on PM or a try to pass North but going to Derby that way would be strange so I´m pretty sure this is an attack on Thursday Island. This must mean that we will face his carriers also. We have a couple of bases to fly attacks on the Allied and this time we will do that. All my daitais are alerted and I have massed quite a lot ac in the area... will try a probing attack tomorrow to see how many fighters are on Cap - I guess at least 225 (F4F-4 and Seafires). I can bring 600 land based fighters and 400 bombers of all different types. This time I want to sink ships...

I had to sacrifice a chutai of Helen as I wanted to see what the enemy Cap looks like. It was amazing to see that it´s not that big this time. Guess there are four Brit CVs but not that many US fleet carriers it seems. We have set two chutai of bombers on naval attack with 140+ fighters each for escort at Lae and Siador. Hopefully both strikes launch and go in against the hex with the carriers as I want to destroy the enemy Cap tomorrow. If both strikes launch with the full escort (and in the same phase of the day) then I expect most of the Cap being either shot down or damaged. Should make the enemy helpless the day after when I will send in the torpedo bombers.

It was planned to also bring 120 Tojos to PM (level 3 af) with one chutai of bombers but the enemy floatplanes reconned it today (only a couple though) and at least three enemy bombardment TFs took position four hexes SW of it, so I expect PM to be nuked tomorrow. Guess PM won´t be usable as a base to fly attacks out of it. Interesting will be how far and where to the enemy TFs will retreat from PM. If they can only move four hexes then they will be in range of 45 Betties set to nav attack 5 hexes out of Gili Gili.

As it is now, as usual I expect nothing to work as planned. Either my bases get nuked, the weather will be bad or my strikes will miss the target... or they will attack a TF outside the hex of the enemy carriers.

what can I say about this Allied adjusted av? It´s the first of April today and it really looks like an April joke. Don´t know if you know what an April joke is though...

that way we will never achieve something. This was the third attack and the third time nearly 150.000 troops had to defend themselve against our attack. So how much supply have they burnt already? Nothing? That they build the forts from level 7 to level 8 in just two weeks doesn´t help me either. Depressing at the moment. If they don´t run out of supply, I will lose... At the moment I don´t care about the Allied offensive against New Guinea as this is an area I can trade for time easily so this won´t divert me from my Australian offensive. But if I wreck two dozen divs and can still not take a base that should have nearly no supply then say good bye...

Last update 3 days ago! What kind of sick joke is this?

It´s called real life and girl friend. I had serious trouble with her three days ago due to me having spent nearly every hour of free time in the last months either playing this game or doing the AAR. Not to talk about the thousands of hours I´ve done the same since the release of the game. Unfortunately I can´t deny it when she accuses me of being computer game addicted. I guess the pace of this game will slow done, hopefully I won´t have to stop it completely. But if it comes hard on hard, I won´t send my gf away and keep up playing, that would be totally insane I guess. In every case I hope to have the game going for at least one month game time more as it is now really heating up and I get what the Japanese in real life never got: the decisive battle it seems.

Stay tuned, doing the AAR for the next three days today, got the turns done allready.

Today has seen the biggest joke since the beginning of the war... mines... no comment anymore...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 03/18/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 27 encounters mine field at Broome (21,85)

Japanese Ships
DD Asagumo, Mine hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
CA Tone, Mine hits 1
DD Kasumi, Mine hits 1, on fire

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 47 encounters mine field at Broome (21,85)

Japanese Ships
DD Fubuki, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 51 encounters mine field at Broome (21,85)

Japanese Ships
DD Oshio, Mine hits 3, on fire, heavy damage
CA Ashigara, Mine hits 1, on fire

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 91 encounters mine field at Wyndham (30,86)

Japanese Ships
DD Hamakaze, Mine hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
DD Hakaze, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

today we lose 6!! DDs to mines. All confirmed sunk. Either immediately due to mines or finished off by LBA. What does that smiley mean? Ah.. stupid...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 1048 encounters mine field at Tongatapu Island (94,114)

Allied Ships
DMS Elliot
DMS Wasmuth
DMS Lamberton

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

After the mine stupidity then followed the shock of the day! The enemy is NOT going to invade Thursday Island! Miller is sending his carriers towards Northern Australia!!!!!

Now this means major trouble. We have immediately started to retransfer all my aircraft back into the Timor area to fly massive attacks on the enemy carrier TFs. I guess this is a resupply mission for Wyndham, can´t think about anything else. We have spotted a dozen TFs already, they are divided in two hexes. Pretty sure this is due to the carrier based stacking limit of 450 ac. This means there is a mega armada coming North with some 900 ac, a dozen BBs at least, cruisers, dozens of DD, a spotted TK TF (probably AOs) but we haven´t spotted AKs so far. Most of the ships are identified as CAs but I guess those should be the AKs...

This will be our decisive battle it seems. We will have the chance to sink a hell a lot of Allied combat ships but we will also lose hundreds of ac, probably some BBs and CVs of course also. There´s no doubt that if Miller wants to press this resupply mission through to Wyndham he can do it as the AKs surely will be the last ships that will be attacked. The only question will be at what cost in combat ships for him - and for us...

As soon as the supply convoys made it to Wyndham, our try to take out all of Northern Australia will have failed. No chance to achieve something against the 3000 Allied av at Wyndham if they get 100.000 supplies. We will see, at the moment I´m quite excited...

Sub attack at 49,91

Japanese Ships
SS I-1, hits 2

Allied Ships
CV Lexington
DD Downes
DD Cassin
DD Tucker
DD Flusser

Luck was on Lexingtons side, torps missed...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 49,91

Japanese Ships
SS I-1, hits 9, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
DD Wilson
DD Sterett
DD Stack
DD Lang
DD Ellet
DD Benham
DD Morris
DD Walke
DD O'Brien
DD Russell
DD Mustin
CL Boise
CL Nashville
CLAA Atlanta
CV Yorktown
CA Minneapolis
CA New Orleans
BB South Dakota

as you can see, the enemy is using one CV TFs. This means we surely won´t see a lot of CVs being knocked out but if a good number of my bombers would make it through Cap then the carrier will be toast for sure, probably the escorting modern BB also. I usually prefer to have a couple of my own carriers damaged than one sunk but Miller obviously thinks different about that. What also would be great if his carriers would get separated. What would be a major disaster would be all his carriers reacting into the same hex, we would then have a mega stacked hex with 900 carrier based ac and 400+ fighters on Cap. But that is something we can not influence so if it happens, it will be bad luck for me and luck for Miller.

No matter what will happen, it´s the best thing that can happen to us at this stage of the war. All our daitais are experts and the enemy is still flying Wildcats instead of Hellcats. If we can´t do major damage now, we can´t do it even less in half a year and if we knock out a couple of carriers now, then this will delay the enemy for months. Well, a couple would probably not enough, it would be more like 4 or 5.

Ah yes, the crappy Allied ASW immedieately sunk my sub...

like I´ve mentioned after last turn, many things could go wrong today and they did go wrong. Needless to say what I think about losing two dozen DDs to mines in Northern Australia alreday, of course also the weather sabotated us this turn. The other base was clouded the whole day, this one launched a strike in the afternoon. Looks like against the hex with US fleet carriers and CVEs. 57 acs knocked down, another 59 damaged. Means the CVs in this hex won´t have more than 100 fighters on Cap tomorrow, but then they will be out of strike range already. But it makes me confident that my land based fighters can knock down the Cap and then my carriers will strike. The three Nells missed North Carolina...

It will be more than just fun, it will be a too high blood pressure and a pulse of over 160... And there will surely be some very hard to watch actions...

the defenders of Pago Pago finally surrendered. They lost the island due to Allied artillery bombardments... how great...

but now, here´s the prove of how really bad the programming of this game was. Seems like database programming of the original developers wasn´t their favourite subject in school. I was able to evacuate fragments of all my units on Pago Pago (not just one or two support sqads) but imagine what happened! A L L turned into ghost units! I don´t have access to them anymore... thank you Mr. Developer, what a great job...

as I have been too dumb to click on the right order, I had to stay another day in this very dangerous area. Needless to say that it´s no surprise attack anymore and Miller moved in more fighters. Both my Zeros and Kates do an extremely good job but we also lose pilots, precious pilots. My IJN pilot pool is empty and we trade 80-90 exp pilots with 35-40 exp pilots so every single pilot lost is nearly a tragedy for us. The airfield was damaged already but another 123 hits are still not enough to close it, spotted fighters on Cap in the afternoon. Not good...

CV Soryu
DD Susuzuki
CL Agano, Bomb hits 1, on fire

Aircraft Attacking:
3 x Beaufort I launching torpedoes at 200 feet
3 x SBD Dauntless bombing at 2000 feet

this just had to happen. I´m providing my opponent with chances to wear KB down with LBA and that´s just not the way to go. KB´s fighters perform excellently, they can´t do any better in Nikmod but this turn was really not amusing. Too many pilots lost, Agana with nearly 50 sys and high fires after one 1000lb bomb hit but Shokaku was lucky, one penetrating deck hit and a bouncing belt hit. The CV survives with 14 sys and 8 fires. Floatation damage on both ships is light.

But there has also been a very good and unexpected psychological effect it seems, as Miller stated that KB is just to strong and if he will decide to engage he will really suffer. So at least he has more than just a little respect of my elite carrier TF. Losing 38 KB Zeros today is a huge loss though, even if the total aircraft losses seem to be a nice Japanese victory. The most important thing is that we saved our AKs at Derby from being destroyed. Another day when they can unload precious supply. Situation at Derby is like Rommel´s in Northern Africa, desperately waiting for supply to keep his tanks running...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on TF, near Derby at 24,85

Allied aircraft
Beaufort I x 4

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AK Hokuzyu Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

another AK hit at Derby but still over a dozen undamaged left to unload...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Allied aircraft losses
Beaufort I: 1 damaged
P-40E Warhawk: 2 destroyed, 2 damaged

Japanese Ships
AK Takegawa Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire
AK Toyokuni Maru, Torpedo hits 1, on fire

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x Beaufort I launching torpedoes at 200 feet
4 x Beaufort I launching torpedoes at 200 feet

two more hits... not good...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Derby

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 56669 troops, 159 guns, 3135 vehicles, Assault Value = 1872

Defending force 40997 troops, 304 guns, 111 vehicles, Assault Value = 894

Japanese max assault: 3240 - adjusted assault: 1892

Allied max defense: 822 - adjusted defense: 1413

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 1 (fort level 7)

Japanese Assault reduces fortifications to 6

Japanese ground losses:
1164 casualties reported
Guns lost 9
Vehicles lost 69

Allied ground losses:
2513 casualties reported
Guns lost 29
Vehicles lost 7

my tanks are fully supplied now, we will keep shock attacking daily now. Either we take the base or I will have to withdraw because of not having enough supply. It seems to me that Miller is once again wrongly interpreting the current situation. He doesn´t seem to realize how important it is to destroy my AKs at Derby. While it may be nice to hit one of KB´s carriers and destroy 3 dozen KB Zeros, the important thing to do at the moment would be to destroy the AKs bringing supply to my tanks. thank you Sir!

Check your reinforcement schedule. This has happened to me and the units some how went back into the reinforcement schedule and came back at full strenght. Well the HQ units did anyway.
