Hi,

Has anyone thought about giving land units the ability to move? I was thinking this would add another dimension to the game. Your special forces teams could move on targets they see; tank coloumns would have to be located and destroyed before they reach the city; J-STARS might be able to be modelled more accurately; things like that. I wouldn't think it would be outside the scope of the game either.
What do you think?
Also, is it possible to add database pics for ground units/facilities?

I think that mobile land platforms are a planned (distant) future development.

It is not possible to add images for land facilities in the current configuration.

I understand that, I was implying it as a future development.

HC has mobile land units.  They are simplistic but you get a fun little tank battle now and again.  More scary is the ZSU-23 that isn't where you expected it to be.  So yes, they'll be fun when they are working in ANW.

My favourite HCE land battle is "Thirst for Victory v2.0" by Brad Leyte.  An entire tank squadron is descending upon Singapore and gets picked apart by Apaches with Hellfire.

That's what I'm talking about!  LOL

1. Any official word on this? Will land units be able to move in 3.10? Is it even being considered?

2. Pics for land units/facilities? IMO it would be rather cool to see a Hawk launcher or whatever in-game.

incredibletwo,
thanks mate Darren's going to owe me some beer for this. Here's what was passed to me:

quote:

1.> Both features have been discussed during regular development meetings. Various issues in terms of our mapping code. Related to how land elevations are modelled. Check for issues related to this to see the problem. SAM facilities placed too close to an elevation change will crash into the ground. The increases in elevation are represented by vertical steps. So moving from one map poly to the next with say, a 30m contour increase is seen by the game engine on your "black map background" as a vertical 30m "wall".

Obviously this already provides issues for SAM launch and siting on maps, and would be the cause of units "attached" to the ground literally running headlong into these contour walls. More likely an issue to be looked at as the game moves toward a new GUI and possible updated maps.

2.> I have already started to collect PD photos for facilities, mainly SAM sites or launchers nice shot on the HUD3 site showing an I-HAWK getting airborne. I should be able to grab some generic pics around Melbourne of warehouses etc, take a trip out to the RAAF museum at Point Cook and grab some Hangar photos etc. Again this is something that will have to wait for a new GUI unless Russell can link up the facility annex and allow DB Editors to assign Picture index numbers so we can set up the required file structures. This is the easier of the two requests, I'll double check my feature requests in Mantis and make sure it's listed.

Darren

Hi,

Harpoon remains a game firmly focused on the naval warfare. However, not a day goes by that I don't think about land warfare. There is no current plan for moving land units. Maybe one day I'll find myself doing it in my spare time.

Media for facilities is a much more likely feature (if there is spare time for 3.10) as it uses it pretty much just extends an existing feature. I'll throw in the idea of media for installations as well because I would like to see satellite imagery brought into our public product.

Thanks,

Russell
