With KB entering various ports in Japan tomorrow, I will move 200+ carrier based fighters into my training bases. This means I don´t have nearly enough room for all my daitais that will be set to train. I either have to find another place where I can do combat training (not really easy as it takes weeks to build up a small airfield) or I have to fly out some of my daitais to make room for my carrier based fighters. And there are also 250+ carrier based bombers that could need some training...

ordered a deliberate attack tomorrow... as the enemy flak is still firing this means there is still supply for the Allied and it´s a wooden hex. Probably level 9 forts as usual so I don´t expect too much. But the enemy is worn down already and I´m confident that I will have enough troops to take the base after a couple of deliberate attacks...

here you can see what is still defending Lautern. Months ago I´ve thought I would be able to cut off half a dozen divisions on Timor when I landed on Northern Australia and started to fight the enemy there. There was never a convoy going to Timor but the enemy was able to nearly completely move out all his troops by air transport...

WOW! This was far easier than I had expected it to be. Only level 5 forts instead of the expected Maginot line and a pretty crappy Allied adjusted av even though being in a wooden hex. Guess supply was critical in the end. Another 25.000 Allied troops surrendered, this brings the total Allied troops lost since the start of my offensive in this area to something like 60-70.000 when I think about the troops lost due to being forced to retreat a couple of times and all the troops that were lost at Broome. Together with the total defeat of the Allied Navy in this are this is a nice victory. The Allied lost 379 points for ground losses today, now being at 20.895.

So Timor is Japanese now and all I can say is that my offensive was a full success. Mission accomplished. Our initial goal was to halt the Allied offensive out of Timor and it was obvious that this would be doable after we took Darwin. Then we were dreaming about killing off the troops on Timor and the 150.000 troops at Wyndham. While killing off the troops at Wyndham will remain a dream, we took Broome, Derby and Darwin, forced four Allied divisions to retreat a couple of times (they are now heading South), destroyed a thousand Allied aircraft and the highlight surely was the sinking or heavily damaging of half a dozen Allied CVs, half a dozen CVEs and a couple of BBs during the Allied resupply mission to Wyndham.

We have lost a couple of hundred aircraft, lost a CA to a lucky torp hit that caused a mag explosion and two of our divisions were forced to retreat due to the movement bug when the rest of the units moved 75 miles in the hex instead of moving out. What really has hurt was the loss of nearly two dozen DDs in the battles around Northern Australia. Nearly all were lost due to either being hit by PTs or the oh so mighty Allied minefields.

All in all, I would say the offensive was a total success. Not just did we stop the Allied offensive, we surely bought us 6 months of time due to the fact that the Allied lost so many carriers AND due to the fact that we probably have locked up (or destroyed) more than half of the available Allied divisions in Wyndham. I guess Miller will soon get enough carriers to mount one big CV TF again that will be enough to attack one of my atolls but he doesn´t get enough US or Australian divs to mount a big offensive to break the siege of Wyndham as the Allied are usually "short" of divisions until mid 44 - especially with the losses so far. I guess we will be able to hold our position in Northern Australia for at least another 6 months. Will be interesting how long the Allied supply lasts in Wyndham...

thx

I´m now expecting the enemy to advance through the Pacific as this will be the best place to use "limited" carrier support. If he attacks Wake, Canton or Baker Island and has 200 Hellcats flying Cap then there´s nothing I can do to oppose the landings. All I can do is to garisson those places with enough troops to make it costly for the attacker. This works in WITP, it won´t work in AE anymore, I fear the Allied will be sitting on Iwo Jima by 1/43 at the latest when you can garisson atolls with only 6.000 troops.

brilliant play.. All the troops stuck in Wyndham are troops he can't use anywhere else.. Be very careful about the North pacific as well, the line between Anchorage and PJ is quite short and it is a great avenue of attack for an allied player in a tough situation...

yeah, I´m aware of the Northern route and have built up and garissoned Paramashiro Jima and Onekotan Jima (sp?), wich are the two Eastern mountaineous islands. He would need at least 5 divs to take them I guess. All other islands are empty, they are all level 0 airfields in Nikmod, so they can´t be built up to more than level 3 and therefor are not that useful anyway. At the moment I can´t see a chance for an Allied offensive in this area as KB would make any attempt to achieve something up there a disaster. And in the next 6 months I get some nice reinforcements that could bring up the assault value even more. And without those two islands there is no chance anyway to advance closer to home islands.

Came across quite a high air balance at Alice Spring which is a level 4 airfield, means there could be 200 ac stationed due to our stacking rule. The air balance was 2419!! So I´ve used an Emily chutai to take a look and after a couple of turns, the number of ac was more than 1600 in total. Well, we know how crappy recon is but usually it´s something around twice as much as there is really.

Seeing the airbalance number and the high recon reports I´ve asked Miller what he has at this level 4 airfield and I got the answer that there are around 1600!!! ac. 1600? Well, the stacking limit says af size x 50 + something like 10% max (while I wouldn´t care if there are 235 or something like that) so why on earth are there 1600 ac? This is odd. Miller said he would have to throw his ac into the sea as there is not enough room on Australia´s airfields but when I look at the airbalance numbers near Sydney, Brisbane, Rockhampton, etc. then there are only VERY FEW ac. I told him that one of the side effects of the stacking rule is that you just have to use more base forces all over the map too. Wonder what he will say...

Reason why I don´t like it seeing 1600 ac at Alice Springs is that from there he can just fly in new fighters, bombers,... to Wyndham in one day if the first day his squadrons there are trashed (if I would decide to attack) so it´s not like it wouldn´t matter how many ac there are at Alice Springs. Either there is a stacking rule or there isn´t IMO. I wouldn´t care if LA or San Francisco would have that many ac as those are just like off map bases. Perth also has an insane air balance, bet there are far more ac than allowed too...

PM is also one of the expected targets of an Allied offensive in a couple of months, but at the moment I don´t really have to fear an invasion. Miller sends in the bombers at 12.000 ft and has 3 of them damaged. Joke of the week again, there are three 100% combat ready base forces that can´t even damage bombers coming in at 12.000ft. Who said that Nikmod flak is any better than stock? Well, it is against attacks at 2.000 or 6.000 ft, but as soon as the bombers go higher than 10.000 ft your flak does nothing if you don´t stack all flak guns on the map into one hex. With the increased super durability of Allied bombers, they take no losses even at long range. No op losses, no flak losses...

back to back attack and again 3 full base forces achieve nothing against a not really high flying bomber strike... the enemy now has at least a fatigue of 36 but again nothing in terms of op losses... I´ve lost more ac today doing one or two hex strikes against a totally undefended target than the Allied have lost against strongly defended targets at ranges of 9 or more hexes...

15.000 ft seems to be the best attack alt for the 4Es. They still knock out an airbase in one turn but don´t have to fear counterfire... I guess there won´t be any of my bases (except Japan) that could put up more flak fire than this one but it´s senseless...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 30,68

Japanese Ships
AK Yubari Maru, Shell hits 5, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS Billfish

Billfish kills a small AK near Borneo. At least the sub was later hit by a Sally. I have yet to figure out Miller´s strategy to use his subs. So far it looks like there is none to be honest. A couple of subs show up now and then but they don´t even seem to focus on the shipping lanes, they are just moving around and often encounter my TFs at very "strange" places just out of pure luck as usually there is no shipping traffic. Well, suits me well. If I would be the Allied, at this date I would flood the Japanese shipping lanes with subs already... torps are working now and most of the subs should have radar also...

One of the sentais sent some fighters and a dozen fighters damaged something like 50 enemy bombers. None was shot down during the replay but 6 were accounted lost A2A for the loss of 2 Tojos A2A (both pilots are dead). In total the enemy lost 19 ac on the map today. The three base forces at PM did NOTHING again, just as if they would be ghost units... 10.000 ft and three base forces don´t even damage a dozen bombers... excellent

seems that you get some quiet turns after the furious action of the last weeks. and you use this time to train up the mighty KB and hopefully consolidate the economy and rice production at home.

the insulting anglo-american attacks on the peacefull people of PM would stop when they face 200 tojo and tonys over the target next time.

yeah, guess there will be some quiet weeks/months ahead. Well, at least against the Western Allied forces as you all know that we plan to attack the Soviet Union. But my tank units haven´t arrived in Port Arthur yet so I estimate the start of the hostilities against the Russians in three weeks as it also takes some time to move the tanks from Port Arthur to the front.

200 Tojos on Cap over PM would be funny but that´s not possible. As soon as I move the fighters to PM, the Allied immediately can see it. That´s the nice design feature we all know about, so surprise isn´t possible. And moving 150 fighters to Buna to fly LRCAP isn´t really worth it either as I would just take too many op losses when doing it daily as the Allied bombers aren´t coming in daily and I can only guess when they will show up again. But perhaps I will LRCAP it now and then.

BTW, Tonies aren´t available anyway...

... a big raid from Wyndham suddenly shows up over Darwin and once again our fighter defense has it´s pants down... out of around 250 fighters on Cap we see 176 in the air which is 70% and not that bad, BUT we get bounced!!! oh my... we defend over our base, our fighters are set to 20.000 ft, the enemy comes in at 10.000ft with the bombers (means 13.000ft for his fighters) and hey ho, we get bounced... so the first dozen Tojos are shot down immediately by the Lightnings that suffer not a single loss during that phase. Our Tojo sentai in the lead gets shredded and then my other Tojos show up, now bouncing the Lightnings, bringing the kill rate up again. When the Tomahawks show up, we get bounced again, the P-40Bs achieve a kill rate in their favour. Then the usual totally off Nikmod fighter vs bomber result, with NOT A SINGLE BOMBER SHOT DOWN during the replay!!!!! 84 bombers get damaged during the replay but not even O N E is shot down during the replay... boah, I´m getting sick...

out of 84 bombers, then 7 crash but not even O N E of the 43 damaged Liberator VI. Oh boy, Nik...

no more comment on that one...

I don´t know if this attack was due to Miller being bored or for whatever reason. At least I can´t see a good reason to launch this attack, as in the end the enemy lost 6 weeks of P-38 replacements, while we have to send two of the Tojo sentais into training schools again. Due to the fact that Nikmod never really sees the bombers being hurt, I´ve totally ramped up my fighter production and therefore I really don´t care about fighter losses on the ground anymore. My Tony R&D has nearly reached 500 ac but the date hasn´t moved forward and is still at 9/43. I hope to get this fighter at 7/43 and then I will be able to employ the first 10 Tony sentais within a month. With a better gun value, an armor value of 2 and a maneuverability rating nearly as good as the allied fighters, I hope to be more competitive as the Tojo stays totally obsolete against enemy fighters. Ok against unescorted bombers, but obsolete as soon as enemy fighters show up. Even though we achieved an A2A kill rate in our favour today, you may not forget that we fought over our own base, the enemy was on escort and we only employed pilots with 80+ exp, while I doubt that the enemy fields pilots that are equally skilled (not yet, but probably soon). I expect to face equally skilled fighter pilots within the next couple of months though.

Miller so far missed to fight a war of attrition and if he now tries to start one without of his short ranged (5 hexes) fighters then he will attrit his long range escorts ten times faster than I would run out of point defense fighters. IMO he should have tried to grab a base somewhere in the Solomons to start the atrittion war, or even better, he should have tried to immediately exploit his attack on Timor.

For the moment, all our hopes are leaning towards the arrival of the Tony, I hope it won´t be disappointing...

and one of those days where I keep only shaking my head because it totally pisses me off...

idiotic! Why? Guess those of you that have been reading this AAR for quite some time know that except a BB and a CA that was sunk due to a lucky torp that caused a mag explosion I have also lost some two dozen DDs to mine hits at those Northern Australian bases. Well, I´ve never seen such a BS before but I thought, well, what is good for the goose... so I´ve sent my MLs to mine Luganville. There are not only a couple of mines now, we´re talking about thousands. At the moment, there are 3874 mines!!! No idea how many mines the Allied had at Wyndham, Derby and Broome (when 9 out of 10 times a surface combat or bombardment TF hit a mine) but I doubt that those two Allied MLs could lay that many at three different bases until they were sunk.

Does a single Allied ship hit a mine here? No. Do they even encouter the mines? No. Do they get their nuke they are used to in 95% of the cases in this campaign? Hell, of course they do!

idiotic...

there´s nothing left on Luganville... idiotic...

let´s continue with idiocy... I´ve deliberately kept this damaged MSW at Derby to trigger an Allied port attack as I wanted to lure them into my flak defenses. We have 4 AA rgt/btn, three base forces and a special base force there, the enemy comes in at 6.000ft!!!!! we damage only 27 bombers and how many are lost??? N O N E!!!! Those are the bombers that flew 14 hexes yesterday already...

Guess how many milk run aircraft we lost today? 7!!!!!

idiocy...

how great... one of the atolls turned into a level 2 airfield and Miller moved in TBFs... I didn´t pay attention and of course opposite to the Allied player, I can´t see the Allied air transfers anyway... Tatsuta will have a hard time trying to make port... one torp is enough to sink an IJN light cruiser, but usually not enough to sink a small Allied AK...

A feel your pain - I too am playing Japan at this stage of the war. Everything you are saying is like Dejavu to me. In my game my opponent regularly bombards my bases with thousands of mines and misses every mine. One base had over 8000 and not a scratch. The worst I think is the fact the Allies know where we move our aircraft and can move theirs accordingly and when they attack we only get 50% CAP.

Anyway - you're doing amazing. This AAR is a must read for me and I hang out for updates.

thanks, glad you enjoy it.

Well, most of my issues are just the usual emotional rant of mine, perhaps I should have called this AAR "The rant goes on part II".

I don´t know why, some things like I´ve seen in this PBEM is something I´ve never seen before. Whenever my TFs entered a base in Northern Australia they hit a mine, lost something like two dozen DDs. There surely are a lot of mines, but surely not as many as I have at my bases - this just because of the fact that I´ve got far more MLs as the Allied lost most of them. The fact that Miller seems to be able to nuke my bases 9 out of 10 times doesn´t make it any better. Both things is something I´ve never experienced before and I´ve played thousands of IJN PBEM turns before.

The issue with the Allied player seeing Japanese aircraft transferes immediately is something that is changed as well as the stupid air balance number.
