Hi Castor,

I have to say this is one of the most impressive demolition of the Allies I've seen since Honda's

He's given you a fantastic opportunity to run him out of his best airframes at PM.  No base force means no radar (and they can only be shipped rather than flown in).  No radar means no DL on incoming aircraft.  Recon, then sweep to clear the skies, then send in the bombers (with some escorts).  You may not get great sweep results, but the escots will massacre what's left.  I'm not saying you won't get bounced at all, but it will resemble 'dead cat' rather than Indian rubber ball.

Hi

Thanks, itīs fun but the curtain is soon falling and I will be getting in trouble I guess. Itīs mid 43 after all.

Two more days into the war (cr following soon) and Miller moved in two more units (by airtransport as I havenīt spotted any shipping) according to my recon. Those units are pretty surely air support units, Miller canīt ignore not having them at PM. Donīt know if he really forgot about them while loading his invasion TF or if it was planned to move them in with Dakotas.

In the meantime weīve spotted something like 80+ enemy fighters on Cap over PM. This means it would not just become a massacre for the Allied, it would also become one for the Japanese (I donīt even want to think about what flak will do to my bombers). The Allied get something like 150 top notch fighters per month (Corsair, Thunderbolt and Lightning, not even counting Spits...) and while there probably wonīt be that many P-38s around, he surely has hundreds of Corsairs and also something like 150 Thunderbolts already. So really fighting them down is something I donīt want to do at the moment. In a month (at the latest, if r&r isnīt succesfull) we will produce roughly 600 Tonies a month and I donīt want to send in hundreds of high experienced Tojos when I can use those pilots in Tonies. The Tony "should" be a vast improvement over the Tojo. More maneuverable (biggest weakness of the "only fly straight ahead Tojo"), armor rating of 2 (Tojo 0) and the first single seat fighter for the Japanese with a gun value of 10. Hopefully this will mean I can take down a couple of Allied bombers more. At the moment I prefer to fight a defensive fight over my bases, with a level 3 airfield at PM, Miller will rather have to concentrate to defend the place than to mount an offensive out of it. With the Tony coming online I hope to be in a better position.

How is it possibly that the Tony arrives in 43 and AFTER the Tojo?

because thatīs Nikmod and the version that arrives is the cannon armed version and that was (according to Nikademus) not available until mid 43. Itīs agreed within the forum that the stock arrival dates of both the Tojo and the Tony seem to be wrong.

I really consider it a joke that a CD unit (more than a dozen 4,7 inch DP guns), a big base force (three dozen AA guns of all calibres) and two IJN base forces (a dozen AA guns each) canīt do any damage. This is a low level attack and while I donīt think I should take out the whole bomber formation, they should at least be forced to attack higher. All what Nikmod has been about seems not to be true in this version anymore. Still true for Allied flak (itīs not just that I have to attack higher, I canīt attack Allied bases at all ) but Japanese flak is inferior to stock flak as the enemy aircraft are just far too durable.

we suffer from the usual things, we just donīt get our fighters airborne. 200 Tojos set to 90% Cap, 65 in the air to meet the bombers. Senseless to try to defend your bases (even against unescorted strikes) until we will get land based radar... Thank god they were low on morale. We take a dozen bombers down in total, most turned back. 6 bombers dropped their load, destroying two Tojos on the ground. We were lucky anyway as most ot the Allied strike failed to locate the target... Otherwise we would have lost 100 Tojos today for downing 20 bombers...

62 fighters in the air last time, today 77. Absolutely funny to get 1/3 of your fighters into the air. Most of the bombers turned back again, a hell a lot has been damaged, the losses within the bombers is just depressing again. The Allied just doesīt have to think about sending in heavy bombers into enemy fighter defenses as the fighters are no threat anyway... really wonder if the Tony will make that much difference. Iīm absolutely sure that lots of radar and the Frank will make a difference. Lol, this will be in 12 months...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 48,76

Japanese Ships
AP Taiyo Maru, Torpedo hits 2, on fire

Allied Ships
SS Bowfin

Japanese ground losses:
54 casualties reported

Bowfin hits a troop loaden, medium sized AP off the "North" Coast of New Guinea. This happened near Noemfor and I wonder what the sub is doing here as this surely is no shipping lane where Japanese subs are usually going... the AP is dead of course after taking two torps, no idea why it doesnīt even show up as heavily damaged...

nearly all of our tank Army has arrived at Borzya. Open terrain, perfect terrain for the Japanese "tanks"... Borzya is a nice pocket to be cleared. Around 20-25% of the total available Russian av is trapped at Borzya...

Hello again, it has been a while, but still.... wow!

This really is just about the biggest allied destruction since Honda.

Now I know you probably won't be too enthusiastic to hear this, but I can't wait for the later game, because I think with the number of bases you have taken, and the number of high exp pilots still around, and the fully functional KB, you can hold on long enough to start introducing some of the late war aircraft successfully and in large numbers. I mean, you say that it is terrible that Jap base force radar and the Ki-84 Frank are ten months off, but even in the worst case scenario I can think of, your opponent doesn't even have the shipping to be in a "good" position in that time frame, let alone the naval air support. Now land based air combat will, I'm sure, be more challenging, with much griping about who bounces who, but you can survive that long enough to produce some really cool stuff.

Honestly, you are just too good at this.

Cheers, best of luck and good hunting!

thanks for the encouraging words. The thing with the high experienced pilots unfortunately is something that can change within one or two months when I have to throw them into an area where the enemy can use Corsairs and has radar. Within one day I can lose 10% of the total, high experienced IJAAF and IJNAF pilots. Even if this is Nikmod, the airwar can produce a hundred killed pilots in one day easily. And the pilots I have needed 4 or 5 months of training to reach that level.

The Frank is still at least a year away (if I will get it two months early), we will see the first radar sets being delivered to the front in 6 months, hopefully this will help somewhat.

I have one more big plan and am quite confident at the moment, you will see soon...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 52,94

Japanese Ships
SS I-165, hits 1

Allied Ships
DD Pakenham
DD Nestor
DD Nepal
DD Inconstant

the enemy uses fast tranport TFs to resupply/reinforce Port Moresby... the surely 2000 mines that are still there are of no value... guess what would happen if I would send in a surface combat or naval bombardment group...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Wallis Island at 93,107

Allied Ships

good day for our subs, CL Birmingham takes a torp and even shows up as heavily damaged... the cruiser nevertheless was able to move 6 hexes during the day, so the damage canīt be that bad I guess...

Aircraft Attacking:
9 x Ki-49 Helen bombing at 11000 feet

itīs just a joke that the heavy cruiser is still afloat... one of those strange outcomes of strange coding IMO... one other thing that is strange or better say not that well designed is the fact that if thereīs only one or only a couple of ships in the port than most of your strike doesnīt target the ship(s) but nearly all bomb the port facilities... well, I would like to target the f*cking CA!

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 52 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses
Kittyhawk I: 19 destroyed
P-40E Warhawk: 5 damaged
P-38G Lightning: 3 destroyed, 11 damaged
P-47C Thunderbolt: 3 damaged
Hurricane IIc: 1 destroyed, 4 damaged
F4U-1 Corsair: 4 damaged

well, this is the 100% ridicoulos happening. The usual stupid mini Cap out of 200 fighters at the base, in this case we were lucky because would we have had 200 fighter in the air, the Corsairs and Thuds would have achieved a 200:0 kill rate...

ALL of those Tojo sentais had experience 80+ and while they take some Kittyhawks down, the Corsairs and Thunderbolts achieve a 40:0 kill rate today! 40:0? Boy, this surely proves that the stats are just totally crap, seems like Nik even has them wronger than stock. Iīm pretty sure that my pilots still had a good dozen more points of experience than the Allied fighters, we defend over our own base and the Tojos get shot down 40:0. Lol, such results makes me wonder again and again why bother playing this game (mod)...

This was the highest kill rate seen in the war so far. 90 exp Zeros against 40 exp Chinese biplanes couldnīt achieve a 40:0 kill rate, well, probably 70 exp Corsairs and Thuds can achieve it against 80+ experienced Tojos... 5 months of training for nothing after this single attack...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day Air attack on Lae , at 54,87

Japanese aircraft
Ki-44-IIb Tojo x 3

B-17E Fortress: 7 damaged
B-24D Liberator: 20 damaged
IL-4c: 2 destroyed, 6 damaged

Japanese ground losses:
269 casualties reported
Guns lost 5

Airbase hits 27
Airbase supply hits 14
Runway hits 104

Aircraft Attacking:
4 x IL-4c bombing at 12000 feet

this then of course had to happen, ultra long range attack from Australia, four AA rgts, base force and other Japanese SH*T defending the base makes it for the Allied bombers less dangerous than it is to just fly my bombers from Truk to Rabaul...

So what to do now? Of course moving everything out of Corsair range now as the first thing. Second thing is not to attack anything. Allied Uber Cap and super Uber Allied Nikmod flak makes it impossible to attack a defended base so the only thing left is to try to strike against his shipping. Which will lead to disasters as soon as the enemy shipping is Capped... Hurrey!

and the good thing Iīve mentioned at the beginning of this post is the fact that the Tony R&D was another time succesfully, we will get the new fighter two months early, means in 7/43 now... In a couple of days the first sentai will be upgraded... after the super performance of the Corsairs this turn over Lae, I have no hopes that the Tony will do any better though...

Iīm just getting upset too easily when the game produces such stupid results...

damn it, proves that Iīm not that playing perfectly at all... after the super duper Corsair sweep against Lae, Iīve ordered all fighters out of the base but forgot about one of the TFs that was heading there... Miller has now the best single engined torpedo bomber at PM with a torp range of five hexes... their first appearance is a disaster for this TF already...

Aircraft Attacking:
2 x B-24D Liberator bombing at 10000 feet

now the super joke of this turn... no, not the atack on the TF, but the fact that the stupided, bugged game must have seen this attack as an AIRFIELD attack... Lae was 99/99 damaged after this turn! WTH? There are 300 engineers at the base and no attack but the airfield is out of a sudden completely damaged? Is this game now going totally nuts?

No Allied losses

Japanese Ships
AK Kanto Maru, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

Aircraft Attacking:
1 x Barracuda launching torpedoes at 200 feet

and another AK sunk... as you can see, Miller is using most of his fighters from PM for escort already. He just can be totally confident about his flak defense there and the fact that the uber radar effects still will bring up a hundred fighters, even if they are set to only a small percentage of Cap... We spot "only" some 50 fighters on Cap over PM each turn... an attack would nevertheless run into 100+ fighters that would 100% surely get the bounce...

hi chris,

PM seems to become very nasty obstacle for your war efforts.

can you grab some divisions, put em at transport ships and retake PM with the support of KB and the battlefleet?

in the long term, the costs PM will cause for you will be larger then the costs of a recapture of the base.

Hi

I have this in mind as an option but the plan that is being in process already looks different... really different... So this would be plan B. But to be honest, sending in KB with something like 200 fighters max against bombers at PM (that can be escorted by a hundred Corsairs) and hundreds of heavy bombers at Townsville and Cairns is not really what would bring me further I guess. The problem is that in the long term, every base in this region will cost me a lot as all those bases are in overlapping range of the Corsair and as in all WITP games, itīs all about this fridging aircraft. Victory or loss, all about the Corsair. IMO, Miller would have been far better of taking Gili Gili and then taking PM as Gili Gili is far better suited to launch an offensive out of it. But no matter what base in this region, there is always a "next step" within five hexes, so even taking PM back will only result in an Allied attack against another base that then would be the same as PM is now.

have moved two daitais and a chutai of Betties to Gasmata together with two Zero daitais to provide escort and set them on nav attack to fly against the fast transport operations to PM... we launch a strike in the morning of which 50% missed the target. Once daitai goes in against this TF and is badly shot up by the DDs... flak is murderous. We hit one modern DD hard, perhaps this one will sink but I canīt be sure about that, only three torp hits are usually enough to really see an Allied ship bigger than a MSW being sunk. The Betty daitai is out of the war for the next three to four months after losign 25% of the crews. Using a daitai with 30 exp pilots doesnīt make sense at all. The aircraft will be moved out of this base again as I expect the 4Es coming in for a visit nuking the base as usual...

Aircraft Attacking:

the stupidity at Colombo goes on, we hit the unsikable CA Suffolk again and again and again... The damage done to the port is repaired by the Allied super duper engineers within one day... I can understand that a bombed runway (non concrete) can be repaired in no time but why Allied engineers can repair port facilities and airbases within one day is beyond me. All very abstract... as the level 6 port seems to be enough to make the heavy cruiser being unsinkable and itīs impossible to damage the port I guess I will give it up as soon as the cruiser has been hit by another 100 250kg AP bombs... this should then be enough to prove that this routine is more than flawed...

two enemy fast transport TFs have again taken position six hexes SW of Port Moresby. My subs are again waiting and I have also brought in Betties to two different bases. Miller of course can see my aircraft transfers immedietely so I expect him to send his nuclear bombers...

I have upgraded the first Tojo sentai into a Tony sentai at Rabaul today... we are able to upgrade a sentai every second day if we donīt see combat as we are now mass producing our new IJAAF fighter.

more of the same like the last days... the fast transport TFs run for PM, the subs are more or less useless and the thousands of remaining IJN mines at PM arenīt existing anyway...

with a dozen DDs such a TF can surely carry more than 1000 supplies each supply mission...

this turn once again is just the bullet prove of what all was done wrong while making design decisions... thank god there are those people that have been working on AE for years... like mentioned yesterday, Miller can see it immedietely when I move my bombers in (yes, there was an airfield symbol before also...). Not just is it totally stupid to enable the Allied player to see all aircraft transfers of the Japanese, itīs also stupid that 100% of your aircraft launch for port and airfield strikes, but as soon as you put them on naval attack, the electrone pilots just decide on their own how many of them will attack. You ORDER them to fly a strike, they decide itīs not worth flying... well done... so both stupid design decisions then enable the Allied player to torch your aircraft on the ground. How often have I seen this BS already? Probably hundreds of times and it still pisses me off so much, every time I could on Mr. Grigsbyīs shoes (or whoever was coming up with such a great idea...)

Please also note how many bombers were lost doing such a long range attack... but that is more of a mod issue, stats of Allied bombers (or effect of a hundred Japanese flak guns) are just too far off in this version of the mod... but hey, the bombers come in HIGH, bombing out of the stratosphere... One bomber lost... one! Hear me? O N E...

this is what launched from Goodenough Island. Itīs not just the fact that Miller can order a bomber strike against my bomber base immediately, itīs also possible for him to set his fighters on LRCAP over his TF because he getīs immediete info of my aircraft transfers. So I lose aircraft on the ground and I lose aircraft in the air due to that feature... itīs mid 43 and 84 exp Zeros just have no chance anymore, not even against mediocre Allied fighters on LRCAP. This turn just once again showed me that itīs not worth going into such kind of attrition battle, it just wears down my airforce to quickly. You canīt fight a stupid game design, itīs just like the possibility for the Allied to cheat 100% of the time (Iīm not saying that the Allied didnīt have total superiority in intel but not as it is in the game with the aircraft transfers). So due to the Allied magic abilities in WITP we lose 30 high experienced aircraft today for no gain. One torpedo hit on an Allied DD is just like a cal.50 burst into an IJN aircraft carrier... no, wait, the cal.50 burst into the aircraft carrier has a fair chance to sink the carrier...

The strike from Lae failed to locate the target, probably good for me, otherwise there would have just been more losses for no or nearly no gain...

CA Suffolk is still afloat, but why should an Allied heavy cruiser sink after being hit by five torps and nearly 3 dozen 250kg AP bomb hits? This is a game after all...

two days rest and we will attack again... guess weīll need another two or three attacks and the first major stack of Russian troops will surrender... my drive on Russia is totally off, it will be a cake walk. Itīs surely fun for the game (well, I donīt know if itīs fun for Miller) but what Iīve done in this campaign with the Japanese on a strategic level is pretty much off. Again, itīs fun but off. But still, no matter what side I play, not the strategic possibilities (of both sides) is what pisses me off, itīs all about the tactical level. Air combats, ground combat, base building, etc is what "isnīt working" (it is working, just not how I would expect it to work). While Iīm 100% sure that the tactical level of AE will be a 500% improvement over WITP, I still fear that it will reduce the strategic possibilities of the Japanese to such an extend that we will never see really interesting campaigns like they were possible in WITP. Judging about something I havenīt even seen...

Stop bombing the suffolk, It doesn't make sense, there is a design flaw there, you will have to leave with it...

I wonīt give it up and if it will cost me every single high experienced IJAAF medium bomber pilot...

If itīs just to prove how borked the damage routine really is...

what's the point it would ruin the game for both of you.. Consider the ship dead in the water.. Maybe talk to Miller to see if you can agree that the ship is gone and he promises not to move the ship from Colombo for the next 2 years or something like that.. You are a great player and your rant is legitimate but in the end it is a game and like all complicated games some aspects of it are borked, this is one of them... Ruining the IJAAF would be silly and ruin the fun for both of you and mainly for me and the others who read this AAR...

For your audience.

Ships can't be resolved in witp despite this happend dozend times in the war.
So why complain if a small number of ships survive intensive bombardements in a big harbour? Even if it isn't sunk, it'll be off the front for months...

we will see.. so far Iīve attacked only every second day as fatigued Japanese bombers are even more crappy than they are usual. Now Iīve decided to fly a couple of back to back attacks, perhaps this will be enough to sink the bastard... I know that Iīm thinking wrong but damaging ships gives me nothing, Iīm always up to sink them...

ordered the next deliberate attack for tomorrow... have long spotted a lot of transports at Borzya so I expect the enemy to fly out troops, this also explains the steadily decreasing troop number. Guess they are flown North to be rebuilt at Irkutsk again as soon as Borzya surrenders. This means the next target will be Irkutsk and not (like planned) the rest of Russia. First Irkutsk, then the rest...
