AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 07/10/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack at 66,89

Japanese Ships
AG AG-5139, Shell hits 3, on fire, heavy damage

Allied Ships
SS KXVIII

a barge is sunk in the Solomons... I´ve got the feeling that Miller massed his subs near the South East tip of New Guinea and the Solomons and that´s perfectly fine with me. No sub spotted inside the SRA for quite some long. Prefer losing some small AKs or APs near Rabaul than losing a fat TK inside the SRA... Losign 10 TK is a tragedy, losing two dozen APs means nothing at this stage of the war. The fact that the TK capacity is reduced by 1/3 in this mod lets you start with nearly not enough TK anyway, losing some is deadly for you industry...

There was a thread where he asked how to defend russia.
I suggested him things like you say now but someone told that running for Irkutsk is a good thing. He said: "Ok, I run for Irkutsk".
IMO, this is absolutly stupid and would make the game too easy for me. While winning is something all of us want, it can also be too easy...

Miller may not be a bad allied player, I can't say as I've never played him nore am I a very good player. But oviously, he's a VERY bad ground combat player.

Like I´ve said, running for Irkutsk in general isn´t a good idea IMO, but what people tend to forget is the fact that the Japanese can see the enemy moving if he uses enough recon aircraft. And I´ve been using so many DinahII and III that I was reconning every base daily from day one on that moving without being spotted was impossible. Only the bases to the far North weren´t reconned by me as I knew there´s nothing up there anyway.

good example of how borked the flak routine really is... as soon as you attack an LCU, the flak effects are trippled (if not more...) there are three base forces accompanying the 1st division and as you can see, we achieve a super duper result... then think about the effect three base forces have at Wallis island against the incoming fighters doing training runs... why on earth should flak units be more effective outside of a base moving with other LCUs than being at a base in their positions? Stupid design... attacks on LCUs always result in super flak defense...

expected such strikes far earlier as Miller spotted my TFs going to Ohka - Sakalin but he didn´t move in his bombers. He could even use his Pe-2 as the range from the next Russian base to Ohka is just five hexes. Out of nearly 100 fighters set to 90% Cap we see 36 in the air. LOL! Thank god that at least half of the Chinese bombers turned back but a 500lb GP bomb hits and sinks a big MSW. The ship ended up with 99 sys, 88 flt and 18 fires and was scuttled...

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 07/12/43

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ASW attack at 66,76

Japanese Ships
DD Yunagi
DD Matsukaze
DD Harukaze
DD Susuzuki
DD Teruzuki
DD Akizuki

Allied Ships
SS Pompano, hits 11, on fire, heavy damage

after achieving 9 near misses yesterday I´ve thought that Miller would order his sub back to either PH or Midway so I´ve sent my three ASW TFs to an expected position where they should meet the sub... one did and the Akizukis prove to be quite good ASW platforms as the Type 2 DC is far better than the Type 91 or 95. Another 9 near misses but also two hits by Type 2 DCs. The sub isn´t reported sunk though and was later in the day unsuccesfully attacked by a Helen. Wonder if Pompano will make it all the way back...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
TF 24 encounters mine field at Goodenough island (56,93)

Japanese Ships
AG AG-356, and is sunk
AG AG-2094, Mine hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

VH2 mine hit as a barge convoy passes through Goodeneough island... Looks like a sub has been here for a visit... We pass our hex and hit one out of, I don´t know, two dozen mines while the Allied fast transport DDs go in and out of PM where there surely have to be still over a thousand of my mines but they have yet to hit one...

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-44-IIb Tojo: 38 destroyed, 19 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
P-38G Lightning: 19 destroyed, 7 damaged
P-47C Thunderbolt: 5 destroyed, 19 damaged

oh well... no wonder how experienced my pilots are, they have no chance against the Thunderbolts... The enemy comes in for a sweep, of course get´s the bounce over our base and we see 50% of our fighters in the air. Had to move in the Tojos as we´re in the process of unloading some 40.000 supplies from our 1750 ton AKs as Gasmata is our supply hub for the barge convoys supplying our bases around Port Moresby. After this slaughter, there are now 4 more Tojo sentais in need of 3 months of training. We lose around 30 pilots today. So far we´ve upgraded already half a dozen Tojo sentais to Tonies. Within another 5-6 weeks we will have upgraded all Tojos to Tonies, hopefully this will make life for Allied fighters harder. At least we´ve destroyed a 2,5 weeks replacement of Lightnings but in 9 or 10/43 the J-model will show up and this means the enemy will get some 100 Lightnings (together with the G-model) a month. So good bye to the funny time...

Wyndham´s av is going down, no doubt there must be a supply issue for the Allied. How can that be as I guess the resupply attempt brought something like 60-70.000 supplies. On the other side, there are a hell a lot of troops and they will suck up quite some supplies each month and with the so fast going game it´s probably already two or three months ago when the supplies came in... in any case, that´s really good news... I still have a lot of bombers and escorts in the area so if the Allied try another supply run then they can expect to lose a lot of ships again as this time there will be less carriers to cover them.

As mentioned, Miller was flying out troops from Borzya to Ulan Ude and there are fragments of 6 Russian divisions that turned into the parent unit after Borzya surrendered. We will have to assault Irkutsk asap now as the enemy divisions will be rebuilt there and that´s not what we want to see... lots of Allied aircraft destroyed today...

What is going on in Chungking? Supply issue? Chinese AV is dropping 5 pts per turn. Which of course means that in a mere 1200 days it will be all gone

Chungking´s and Kweiyang´s av has been going down steadily for months already, then suddenly started increasing again, now going down again. Pretty sure that it´s all about supply, the Chinese aren´t getting much more than 600 supplies each turn, which is surely not enough to feed the whole Army but seems enough not to see them dying of starvation. Anyway, China is knocked out and I can´t see much of a reason why I should do anything in this theatre than just holding my positions in these two bases to keep the Chinese honest.

Just a quick Q if you do not mind Castor Troy.
(I need all the help I can get in my pbem after all )
How come you manage to get 4277 AV from a mere 8315 troops and 281 guns in Wyndham? Some elite unit or something?

that´s an easy one... There are several divisions, base forces and ARTILLERY units. The 8315 troops and 281 guns you see are only the ART units set to bombard while the rest of my units is set to defensive. They show up as av but not as troops, guns or vehicles. In total there are more than 200.000 troops at Wyndham I guess.

Life is a continuous circle : I remember asking exactly the same question several months ago.  During the fighting in Chine, if memory serves well.

Chris, you say you would not pull your forces north, if you were the Allied player having to defend Russia.  Would you mind sharing with us what you would have done ?  Because if you stick south near Vladivostock, you'll end up cut of supply if the IJA pushes around Borzya or Blagovshenko (sp?) - and Vlad area does not have enough supply sources around.  Splitting the armies north, south, and center would end up with not enough forces at one point to defend a serious Jap offensive.
And thanks for the map.

what you have to do (better say what I think you should do) as the Allies is to fight a defensive fight on the move. Defend in your bases that have level 9 forts (which every base where you had troops should have in 43) and as soon as you start taking too high losses or the forts are down to 5 or so you move out. Use your bombers and your recon aircraft to recon en masse so you´re always well informed about what your enemy is up to. As soon as he shifts half a dozen divisions somewhere, use 3 divisions to counter him. If he only outnumbers you 2:1 he won´t achieve anything against level 9 forts in open terrain, let alone in wooden or mountaineous hexes. And the mountains are your friends. Defend Vladivostok sometime with a couple of divisions, you don´t need many more when you have high forts. Then fall back, use the mountains. It takes a hell a lot of Japanese troops to force 5 or 6 Russian divisions out of a mountain hex. Means the Japanese is stuck a couple of hexes North of Vladivostok. The Russian have something like 7.000 assault points available, you need 2000 in the South to block 5000 Japanese av on the rail in the mountains. If the Japanese are coming with less troops you can move one division out. You need another 1000 av to garisson Blagoveshchensk that has a direct connection into Manchuko, but there´s a river in between so Japanese troops would have to shock attack across the river into level 9 forts - something I wouldn´t recommend. Leaves you with 4000 av for the North if the Japanese tries to cut you off from Irkutsk. Well, if the Japanese uses 5000 av in the South then there are 5000 left in the North (if China isn´t totally stripped) and voila, you have 4000 Allied av for the defense against 5000 Japanese av on the offense. 2000 av at Ulan Ude behind level 9 forts means the Japanese surely won´t just take the base on the move and you have 3000 av left that can move into the back of the Japanese out of the Blagoveshchensk area. If the Japanese does enough recon he would be aware of your 10 divs in reserve in the Blago area but then he would have to leave half a dozen divisions behind also to cover his supply lines. Means there is by far not enough left to move on Irkutsk.

Well, that´s all just theory but that´s one of the strategies I had made working. If China is knocked out (like it is in this game) the Allies in Russia have perhaps a 40% chance to hold Russia (of course not all of it). And 40% only because half a dozen China command divisions have been moved to India instead of Russia. Guess I have "only" five or 6 China divisions for my assault on Russia but that´s enough, brings me to something like 10-11.000 av.

One big key is the railroad and recon. If you spot your enemy moving troop stacks somewhere, start moving also. If you don´t recon, a Japanese Army of 12 divisions will surprise you somewhere and you can´t react until it´s too late. Fight a moving ground war but mainly on the defense. Let your enemy attack you either behind level 9 forts or in the mountains. Don´t try to stop a Japanese 5.000+ av land death star on open terrain, that´s not possible. Try to stop it in a base with high forts and you will inflict 40.000 casualties within the first four or five attacks. Then move out of the base, the enemy will have lost more av than you will have (at least three times as many) and it has bought you time. Now defend further back... and so on. At some point you can´t move further back of course but that´s not necessary anyway as the place you have to defend is two or three hexes North East of Vladivostok (mountains) where you can fall back into your bases with worn down divisions to get them back to strenght and defend the way to Irkutsk like mentioned above. A too selfconfident Japanese player won´t cover his supply path and believe me, with 3000 Russian av moving into the Japanese supply path when he tries to move on Irkutsk this can turn out to become a Japanese disaster pretty fast. Of course, like everywhere else, don´t get cut off. As soon as you have a big troop stack cut off, you´re in trouble as those troops are lost forever.

16 av lost at Wyndham in only one turn, looks like the Allied are already starving big style... A Glen has spotted barges moving North from Perth. Well, there´s only one location I can think of where they will move too: Wyndham... Perth to Wyndham is something like 45 hexes and that´s quite an odd distance to use barges. Only a couple are spotted but I bet that´s a big barge TF that has been sent to Wyndham and Miller must have equipped them with a dozen paddles each as barges only have fuel for some 10 hexes. Odd, really odd...

We have also spotted an AK TF (some 10-12 ships) moving towards Port Moresby, at the moment just off the Australian coast. Means at the moment I´m 100% sure that fighters from Cairns or Townsville are LRCAPing the TF while it will be in range of PM´s Corsairs tomorrow. Means I surely won´t move in my bombers as a) due to the stupid game design Miller can see my aircraft transfers immediately and b) it´s not worth losing 5 dozen aircraft to sink one or two AKs when the Corsairs are flying LRCAP over the TF... another 100 ac would be lost on the ground as the Allied bombers would bomb my staging bases due to the idiocy mentioned under "a". Unfortunately we´re already in the situation when we can´t do anything as we can´t attack PM due to flak, the Allied super ability of getting a 100% Cap rate and the fact that Allied engineers are supermen that could rebuild a totally destroyed 1.000.000 citizen town in one day. So we will focus on the defense. This means we will only do major strikes against Allied invasions. That´s what we can do and that´s what hurts the Allied the most. Losing 300 Japanese aircraft against an Allied invasion where the Allied will lose dozens of ships is better than losing 300 Japanese aircraft during an attempt to knock out PM´s airfield for one day and scoring half a dozen torp hits on an AK TF with supplies...

and don´t forget, there´s still my plan for PM...

Thanks Chris, very interesting.

I can't wait to see what you have in store for PM.  And so, after successfully invading Russia, what will be the next step ?  Alaska or California ?

Unfortunately there´s no landbridge to the US, otherwise I could think about moving my ground deathstar into US territory.

Miller decided to move B-24s into Russia, set to naval attack. Got a message that parts of the strike failed to locate the target, otherwise it could have become messy. Our TFs in the hex weren´t spotted by patrol aircraft but by the obligate sub that is sitting in my port... as it alway has been in this campaign... lool, how vulnerable subs are in port hexes... The Chinese Warhawks were hit hard today for only one fighter lost on our side. Easy explanation, we weren´t bounced and only a couple of non-dogfight Tojos were on Cap. The other fighters shredded the Warhawks. We saw the first two kills of our new IJAAF fighter the Ki-61 Tony. Nearly all bombers made it through to attack our AKs unloading supplies but missed...

If Miller gets serious about using US bombers in Russia I will knock out his airfields as they´re now all in normal range of our medium bombers. With more and more Tonies becoming available also I guess it won´t be much of a problem to take down the Russian fighters that are flying Cap over the bases anyway.

another medium sized and full of troops AK sunk on the way to Port Moresby... I don´t get any info on which troops are lost, as they aren´t saved by other ships in the TF... can only mean that all ships are 100% loaded... even though Allied ASW has become more than excellent already, one MSW is not enough to really guard a TF of more than half a dozen ships...

we won´t attack Uglahamensk as I´m planning on using it as a training target when my bases in the Philipines will be under attack by Allied forces (at some point in the distant future) or as soon as the Philipine bases are stacked to their limit (which already is the case). At the moment I can´t use it as a training target because the enemy can a) move fighters in and b) the base force there can put up too much flak fire as to serve as a training target... but we´ve got time...

situation at Wyndham really looks good for us at the moment. The enemy is surely starving and I´ve ordered four divisions and another brigade to move on Wyndham. As soon as they have arrived I will order the next deliberate attack, which will be another bloody affair for our troops. Hopefully we can knock down a fort level and keep the enemy from building new ones. I have NOT given up my plan on taking Wyndham and destroying more than half a dozen Allied divisions...

another attack of the bombers out of Russia, this time causing real trouble. The B-24s achieve 6 bomb hits. Not bad for 9 attacking bombers... One hit was a 2000lb GP bomb, the first of the war. Means the Liberators experience already reached concerning levels. Our fighters were once again pretty useless against the bombers and I have to say that it´s not one of my smartest momemts to keep sending TFs into this base when I don´t have enough competitive fighters over the base or not having knocked out the staging base of the enemy bombers. The big AK is lost of course...

we kept our ships at Ohka as we hoped to see the enemy being quite low on morale and we were right... easy kills for our fighters today but there were again bombers getting through our Cap. Again we have no chance to get more than 50% of our 200 fighters into the air, it´s just depressing... all bombers missed at least...

see! Miller moved in ONE Russian division into the mountain hex where the region fort holds position and immedietely we have no chance anymore. And we have three high experienced divisions assaulting this position. Seems like Miller can hear me thinking, he now seems to try to defend in the mountains... My lead unit gets hit hard, having 10% of the troops disabled...

Japanese forces CAPTURE Charter Towers base !!!

BANZAI! Japanese operation market garden has started! Seriously, of course this is not a big style air assault on the East Coast of Australia but an attempt to take a base and knock down the forts as I have no less than 13 (in words: thirteen) IJA divisions plus support troops moving into this region within the next two days. Nearly 5.000 assault points will clear the area around Cairns and this will mean the enemy at Port Moresby is in reall trouble. I expect to see something like a thousand Allied av in this area, hopefully not more. A single base force at Charter Towers would have been enough to see this airassault failing but I guess this was the last thing Miller would have thought of and obviously he didn´t spot my troops marching down the railline coming from Darwin. I received lots of fresh divisions and have released some of the restricted command divs paying lots of pp for them and in terms of ground forces I´m really having the edge against the Western Allied as there are so many divisions cut off in Wyndham that I don´t really have to fear to meet a big Army in this region. Especially when Miller has moved the worn down American divisions to Port Moresby. I guess if he would have had fresh divisions, he wouldn´t have used the divisions that were force to retreat a couple of times.

This now really opens a new perspective in the war. Lots of Allied troops are cut off in Wyndham and the divisions at Port Moresby are about to face the same situation the Allied troops faced on Timor. They took a base and the damned Japanese just landed behind them.

I really wonder how Miller will respond to this offensive. The first thing my kickbox-trainer told me when I started as a kid was that I always have to be aware of my opponents right arm/leg when I´m going to hit him on the left side. Miller hasn´t secured his flanks twice (Timor and PM now) and he could alos pay for it twice.
