Hi Mike.
It is a bit difficult to explain in a foreign language.
So: i am working for the state. In our country, there are something like 10% or so of the workers who work for the state ( teachers, policemens, firefighters, hospitals, workers for the towns, and so on). No speaking about politics and the good or bad use of them.

We can pass exams to try to improve our grade...and our income.
So, i first had a written exam in march; if it had go well, i could have had an oral exam in 15 days (end of june). But....sigh, i was not good enough to be admitted to this second part of the exam.
The style of exam is more difficult for me to explain: one part is about knowledge of the great debates of the world (climate changes, fair trade, rights for the health, future of europe, and we even had a training about piracy ;or this kind of subject). Another part of the written exam is to synthetise a manual of about 30 pages of laws (and you choose if it's public laws, civil laws, financial laws).
If ever you succeed the written part, you got another law at oral.
I choose public law in written part, and civil law (the law about the private peoples) to oral. i was learning things about mariage and divorce for example, until i learned i was not admitted.
Sorry, it's a bit complicated i think ?
Of course, anyone knowing the french administration could PM me and i will try to explain (and complain a bit about my failure).
Now, i must explain Miss Gladiatt why i CAN'T PAY THE RESTAURANT

And thanks for asking

The blues and WWI are very similar for me. I have great interest in both, but a lack of exposure to both.

I spent almost 5 years in Memphis and enjoyed listening and dancing to the blues in the clubs on Beale Street. I just don't know the names of many artists or songs.

I went out for the voting last night, to say I was surprised at some of the choices is an understatement really.  The sheet of choices for the European Elections seemed to be about 2 feet long   The most amusing name/option on the list was the Roman Party   Or as it said on the voting slip:  The Roman Party.  Ave!

So, I sent PayPal an e-mail asking where the <expletive deleted> my money was, and they "responded" by sending me a cut-n-paste of their how-to on transferring money from my bank to my PayPal account...

I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, but it was quite a bit of money.

I'm curious why you are trying to transfer money there, rather than just letting Paypal debit your bank account?

Let's make up their platform, shall we:

Forced collectivisation of attractive women
Fixed matches in futbol (although that's already allowed)
Making distillation, production or distribtution of Ouzo a capital crime
Reinstating capital crimes
Annual gladitorial contests at the Coliseum pitting AS Roma supporters vs. Lazio supporters
