it´s not just me that is lucky with this map. Without this map, the Allied could not have established the invasion of Timor and that was the start of all of this...

At the moment I´m not intending to attack Brisbane as there´s no real need to. Major targets at the moment are: Wyndham and Irkutsk as the primary targets and the area around Townsville and Cairns as a secondary target. Followed by Port Moresby and the rest of Russia. As soon as either Wyndham or Irkutsk falls I will free up a hell a lot of troops. 5500 av (only inf units) at Wyndham and the bases around and 1800 av (only tank units) at Irkutsk. Both should be very welcome to act as garison troops in important areas to further bolster my defenses (which doesn´t look that bad anyway) and to aid a major offensive. Lol, mid 43 and I´m talking about major offensives... As soon as my troops will have arrived at Townsville we will see what Miller has in the region. Our biggest problem will surely be the level 9 forts he´s expected to have everywhere as this could slow us down and give Miller enough time to move in reinforcements. But then we´re back at start with us having so many troops in the area that he can´t dislodge us and his troops bogged down also, not able to mount an offensive into the Solomons, New Guinea or elsewhere. By the time we knock out the troops at Wyndham (yes, I´m still thinking I will take that base - kind of a little Adolf that still thought he would knock out the Russians at Kursk) we could then move on into the Townsville area to knock out the troops that are fighting us there.

Lol, I don´t want to think about what it would mean for the Allied to lose all those divisions at Wyndham AND a couple of divisions more on Australia´s East coast. I sure would love to have my tanks with me now, but they are really needed in Russia for the assault on Irkutsk that has to start asap.

as you can see, the Japanese Empire has grown to quite some size, the overall situation isn´t that bad considering the fact that we´re nearly in 8/43 and are still mounting bigger offensives than the enemy. But this should not fool us! No matter what we do, it´s always a max effort. We have won lots of terrain but the enemy is already employing aircraft that enable him to achieve air superiority everywhere he decides to emplow them. The problem really is that I have to use twice the number of merchants to carry stuff around, the fuel production didn´t change though and that´s one point where mods become critical as you notice that when it´s too late. If I wouldn´t use any of my warships at all, I would still run out of fuel!!! This after conquering all the SRA (with all oil intact after repairing everything!), all of India except Karachi and Ceylon and probably soon all of Russia. Well, what else am I expected to conquer in this mod to have enough fuel? The West Coast? It´s a shame when you spend hundreds of hours playing and doing an AAR just to find out that the mod has a big problem.

I´ve fired off an email to Paul:

Hi Paul

Looks like we are (better say I am) running into problems that are mod related. Well, as you know, Nikademus greatly reduced the cargo capacity of merchants in the mod, which means I have to use roughly twice the number of merchants to haul stuff around. This means I´m using up twice as much fuel as I´m expected to. While Nik had a good idea with the reduction of cargo capacity, he obviously didn´t think far enough as he should have. I´m running out of fuel…. I fear the game will end within the next 6 months because my fuel stocks are sucked dry, just because of the fact that I get the same fuel supply as in stock but have to use twice the ships. I´ve started with nearly 4.500.000 fuel and after 20 months of game time I´m now down to just above 1.300.000, which is nothing as I have to pick up fuel everywhere already. I´m using up 150.000+ fuel a month more than I produce as nearly all my merchants are underway 100% of the time.

Don´t know how I should have performed better than conquering all the oil in the SRA, the oil in India and the oil from Ohka Sakkalin but I´m still producing less than I need just to feed my merchant Navy. It´s a shame and I hate it to say, but we should be prepared to end the game within the next 6 months of game time at the latest as this will be the time when my ships will run out of fuel because as soon as I´m down to 500.000 fuel on the WHOLE MAP it will mean there´s no fuel anymore anywhere. All those hours of playing and doing an AAR for nothing… what a crap.

Back to the map. As you can see there are the major areas of importance at the moment and we´re doing quite good in all of them (while I don´t know what the Allied will throw at me at Townsville). China is knocked out, India is well garissoned and Russia is probably about to fall within the next 10 months if we will be able to knock out Irkutsk. If we´re able to knock out Wyndham then the Allied will be short of urgently needed divisions to mount ongoing offensives into vital areas. Without Australia´s North coast the Allied will have to take a longer way either through the Pacific and our built up atolls bristling with forts and artillery or up New Guinea and if we are able to bog down one of his major invasions then this will bring us months of time as his troops will have to recover from bloody invasions. Smaller number of Allied divisions just means slower advance. Well, that´s just for the theory as I won´t be able to see that when I will run out of fuel for my merchants at the beginning of 1944. Oh boy, stock is a mess, but there aren´t any problems to play stock through into 1946... you can´t do that with this mod...

Wow, that is a major issue indeed. Do you refuel your tankers? Would it help any at all to have them simply paddle around? Sure it would take much longer, but might save some fuel.

it would help not to refuel them but wouldn´t that be really strange? Not to think about that I would again need twice the number of ships because they would now move at only one hex per phase. So this would mean I would need nearly four times the ships compared to stock to move stuff around.

thanks. Can´t say it really discriminates the Japanese though. I have yet to find out how many of my ac will really be able to penetrate Allied CV Cap but I´m confident. The Allied bombers are a bit too durable, Nik even mentioned that in his readme of the mod, he wasn´t sure if it´s right as it is. Well, from playing it as both the Allied and Japanese I can say Allied bombers are too durable (am not saying Oscars should take down B-17s in the dozen...)

Allied cargo capacity was decreased in the same rate, Allied flak is absolutely uber though, have never seen this before in any other version. Japanese flak is even more useless as in stock as the Allied aircraft durability was that much increased that the increased flak in fact can´t do a lot, no matter how many flak units you stack into a base. Perhaps with better Japanese fighters (means higher gun value) the kill rate looks better. Not too much, not too few would be great but getting everything right is pretty hard, if not impossible anyway.

But the major problem (mod related) remains the same at the moment, I will run out of fuel just from using my merchant Navy. This means the game will just end within the next 6 months as I can´t move my ships anymore... lol

maybe you can reduce the fuel usage of your armed forces in the next weeks? remember, that you initiated more major operations in the last 20 months then most of the japanese players during the whole war. all that must cost alot of fuel.

but now, with china, india, russia (soon), australia secured, you can reduce offensive operations and react to his attacks to save fuel.

none of those operations has really cost me a hell a lot of fuel compared to what people usually do sending KB out for raids every couple of weeks deep into the Pacific. It´s not the warships that suck my fuelstorages dry, it´s the merchant navy. Hauling oil / resources / supply and fuel costs me more fuel than I produce. FAR MORE fuel than I produce, due to the fact that I have to use twice the number of ships than I´m expected to. Got the Nikmod cargo capacities and the stock fuel supply. And remember, I´m producing far more oil and fuel than the average Japanese player in stock as it´s not really usual to secure EVERY oil center on the map. There isn´t a single oil center left I guess. Well, perhaps there´s one far South in Australia but that´s it then.

And all this still is not enough to only fuel my merchant Navy...

lol, you mean having warships moving at one hex per phase is a good thing? Will be nice to play like this. Let´s send out KB, it will take the carriers one week from Truk to Rabaul, hopefully the enemy will still be there when we arrive...

Come on now, why stop playing just because the situation is FUBAR? You ARE the Japanese player after all. Are you even allowed to give up untill the Emperor says so (which I believe is only after the release of AE)

the fuel thing is really a mess and the only real game breaker so far. It´s not over yet, I just wanted to give Miller the info that we might run into real problem in six months game time - and it really looks like it. No matter when AE comes out I don´t expect this game to end as soon as AE is released because I won´t buy (well, perhaps I will buy it immedietely) nor will I start a PBEM before the first two or three patches.

knocking out I-37 and sinking I-175... boy, it´s the time where I don´t see a reason anymore to send out my subs... those MSWs earlier and now those DDs have sunk 3 subs and heavily damaged another half a dozen... I´m usually not putting them into enemy bases and have them just sit there (like many Allied subs have been doing for 20 months of war) and I´m moving them... doesn´t help, IJN subs are just sitting ducks at this date... we see slightly more than 50% of our fighters in the air today when the Allied bombers came in to bomb our DDs. The Warhawks had no chance on escort and we also take 10 bombers down. there are more troops holding position at Townsville than I would have expected as I expected 1000 av in this whole region, not just at Townsville alone... Not sure I can achieve something in the near future as I´m sure that Miller moved most of his Port Moresby attackers out again with the TF we´ve attacked and those troops probably will go to Townsville... looks like we will have to wait until Wyndhamn falls but at least our offensive more or less stops any Allied ambitions to move further on New Guinea. If I could spare three IJA divisions I would send them to PM now, coming over the trails from Buna. I can´t as all my divisions are tied up in a huge ground war in Australia...

Allied av has dropped by 29 points since yesterday... looks good, next deliberate attack soon to come and if the whole assault doesn´t get totally screwed up then I hope to take this base within the next four weeks as our last attack was the start of the final assault on this stronghold... I´m really amazed that the supply didn´t last longer but when I think about the fact how much supply I have to bring to Australia to feed my Army than I shouldn´t be surprised at all... I´m pumping hundreds of thousands tons of supply into Darwin and have problems to keep up with the demands of my ground units... guess especially the Army at Townsville is needing a hell a lot of supplies as the transport from Darwin all the way to Townsville means for one ton delivered two tons are lost on the long way...

yeah, only one div is set to bombard as the bombardment effects aren´t really good anyway if I would use all of them and troops recover faster if set to defense. As we suffered 5000+ casualties dispersed within all our units they are all resting rather than doing bombardments. The only reason I´ve kept one div to bombard is that I want to see what Miller has at the base and if he brings in more troops. Staying on defense also saves supply. For the moment I think all I can do is to wait for Wyndham to fall and then move more stuff South. I´ve already achieved the main reason for driving South anyway: no more Allied invasions in the PM area.

first of a serious of heavy air attacks against my inf divisions at Charter towers. The enemy comes in high but as mentioned a couple of times already, if flak is defending LCUs then the effect is at least trippled. Only god knows why (I guess the devs don´t...) My troops get highly disrupted but that´s it. Such an attack renders an inf division useless for at least three days as the disruption goes up into the 70-80 range...

boy... have set all my units at Wyndham to deliberate attack by accident as I wanted to order all of them to bombard. I first clicked on deliberate attack - set all units to attack, then clicked on bomard - set all units to attack. Unfortunately this means that only those units are set to bombard that actually can bombard, the others stay on deliberate attack. This lead to this disaster when I had more than half a dozen eng units attacking. They are all wrecked now of course... stupid me... this could mean that the attack on Wyndham will take a couple of weeks longer as I just lost 1/3 of my total combat engineers...

Sure he aint using patrol planes or heavy bombers for this?
If you are sure it is the bug being used, are you going to ask him about it?

You can´t place patrols inland and Alice Springs is the only place in "range" of any aircraft of the Allied. And you can´t use bombers (B-24 would have the range from Alice Springs) to transport troops, you could use them for supply runs. So if they are not dying by starvation, well there´s only this "feature" I mentioned left...

I usually don´t want to ask an opponent if he´s using an exploit because if he does, he obviously thinks it would be ok. And in this case it´s just not important enough for me to start a fight. The more troops he flies out with this "feature" the sooner he will lose Wyndham. He loses Wyndham, I have 5000 av ready to move onto the next target and that´s quite a nice situation given the date of this campaign.

I´ve mentioned in an email the use of his barges that were spotted by my subs and the obviously turned back to Perth as it seems Paul has accepted my thought of it being strange to use barges for a 45 hex supply move. 10-15 hexes ok if there´s fuel at the destination but not a nearly 100 hex move to and from the destination.

I couldn´t resist and have asked Miller if he also knows about the "workaround" how to pick up troops that are actually out of range of your ac and he replied that he was very disappointed that I would think that he cheats. Well, he shouldn´t be disappointed because the more troops he flies out, the better for me.

But what really surprised me is the fact that he told me that he´s using C-46 to fly out troops and they have enough range. I don´t know if he really thinks they have enough range or if he thinks I wouldn´t know their range. The C-46 has a huge cargo capacity (15.000) but not more than 9 hexes range in Nikmod. Well, Wyndham is 14 hexes away. Which makes it pretty obvious that he uses the workaraound, feature, bug, glitch or however you want to call it.

Planes may land, refuel and then fly back with the troops. It doesnÄt matter in witp, whether a plane makes paradrops or can land and refuel. So if you want, it isn't bugusing or cheating - it only reflects the real possibility of refueling at an airport... 

Moreover: You have fighters, why don't you simple LR-CAP the base? He'll loose a lot of planes WITH their load and your pilots get a free live training without any serious danger.
There's no easier way to create aces!

am I totally nuts? god damn what´s going on with this sh*tty ground combat routine. Don´t know how often I have attacked here with hundreds of combat engineers and it´s not possible to take down the forts and the super duper Allied mega engineers build up the forts from a Maginot line into a super Maginot line within two weeks... Losses stay insane, that the enemy is out of supply doesn´t matter at all it seems... The real idiocy isn´t the fact that the enemy still has a higher adjusted av than base av, the idiocy is the fact that we still get our av divided by 3 even though we meet ALL requirements. Suppyl, HQ, prep... etc. etc.

At 1/1/43 everything Allied is hardcodedly turning into super duper it seems... the way this battle has been going on for months makes you want to belive that the Nazis are still holding on Stalingrad nowadays...

so my answer... there´s a lot in WITP that is so super abstract but why shouldn´t the same thing be valid for bombers then? Or fighters? Why can´t my Kates fly a torpedo out 8 hexes and land two hexes further East at a friendly base instead of returning? Why can´t Allied 4Es fly from Iwo to Tokyo and land at Vladivostok? All possible in real life... this bug has been around forever already and it´s a non working programme, not the abstraction of real life.

But hey, why not going with the abstraction of real life. There is no supply at Wyndham and supply is abstracted for everything. Food, fuel, ammo, etc. So if the enemy is starving then there´s not enough supply to even keep his units intact. But there´s still fuel for aircraft. Very abstract, because no supply, no aircraft fuel.

LRCAP? lol! From where should I fly LRCAP? From Darwin? I don´t know how much experience you really have with flying LRCAP but it´s definetely not enough to know how much op losses I would take for no gain as we would damage a dozen transports while taking only one or two down for the loss of up to a dozen high exp Zero pilots. LRCAP 7 hexes is just a wast of your ac and pilots, it´s definetely nothing to creat aces. Perhaps that works in stock but stock... well...

As it is in this game, aircraft have a certain range, if this range is correct or not is usually a long discussion on the forum. If a base is within range than you can use your ac to attack it, fly in supply, fly in troops. If it is out of range, you can´t do that. Wyndham is 14 hexes from Alice Springs and the C-46 has a range of 9. What more can I say? No matter if we try to abstract the possibility of Aliens coming from the Venus to relieve Adolf Hitler in Berlin 45, if the game was programmed differently than it´s just not working. In this case, it´s a not working game routine (for ages already) and not the abstraction of something.

looks like I really can´t do anything to defend my bases anymore. People consider putting 25.000 troops on an atoll total overkill in the game but when I look at my ajdusted av (and compare it with the adjusted av of out of supply troops at Wyndham) then I´m more than shocked. Been a long time since I´ve seen an atoll fall as easy as Canton will fall... the attack on the first day already makes sure that the atoll will fall either on day two or three. We lose more troops than the attack and we are sitting behind level 9 forts, fully prepped, fully supplied and the inf untis were 0 disrupted (bombardments don´t touch inf units at all)... boy, damn die rolls...

Here´s what Miller has landed on Canton. I have to say I was surprised to see four US divisions. I knew there are lots of RCTs around but seeing four 100% combat ready US divs was a surprise. But as mentioned above, I really am amazed and wonder why Miller took Canton as a target... what does he gain other than wearing down his troops, even though if he will take the atoll easily? It would have taken him only something like two weeks more and he could have moved those troops into the Townsville area. In fact, they could have been there for a long time already I guess. I have to ask the same question as I´ve asked during his attack on PM, why is he trying to do an offensive if he has 150.000 troops trapped at Wyndham? Shouldn´t it be his number one priority to relieve those troops at Wyndham? This especially if he has to notice that his troops there really seem to be super tough and hold out amazingly long, even though while being out of supply. No, first he attacks PM with US divs that were down to 60% strenght and without any carrier support, resulting in his troops being even more worn down and the loss of a couple of light cruisers and 5 dozen APs! And now he attacks Canton Island! Why? And also in this attack, it seems there is no carrier support around. The small TBF attack on Canton seems to have come from CVEs or CVLs. But my bombers didn´t attack today, so not having carriers wasn´t that severe it seems.

Still, I really don´t understand my opponent´s strategic decisions at all. Not that it wouldn´t be good for me, but honestly am I totally wrong in saying that this doesn´t make sense? Perhaps I am and it´s a perfect strategy, I just don´t get it to attck exactly that base that is the furthest away from any important area.
