Hey all,
Please don't rake me over the coals for this question. I'm still trying to grasp this game and playing the first scenario. The problem I am having (with most strategic games like UV, HoMM, Civ- not that I rank UV down with them...) is that I play the game with a need to tweak things, especially if I feel that something should be set differently. I know what the units are, what they do, and how to use them but I can't fight this feeling that I'm doing something wrong, which, perhaps I'm not. I guess what I'm wondering is... what is the basic or safest setting for aircraft on a carrier, or aircraft on a base. I can tweak from there. I'm getting attacked by 16 bombers with 26 fighter escorts, while I have 9 fighters protecting the base or Carrier TF. I don't want to micromanage individual aircraft, but it is necessary- it seems.

Another thing... I've seen this posted before, but perhaps I'll get an answer here. I wanted to station a Carrier TF off of a base I was transporting troops to. I want the carrier to attack with bombers any enemy ships trying to transfer troops to this base before my guys got there. The carrier was in position away from enemy air reach from their bases. After ending the turn my carrier chose to move within range of the enemy Air of their occupied base, moved within range of enemy carriers and got sunk. How can I set my carriers to protect a base from enemy troop landings, yet stay in place and NOT move to attack enemy carriers (where they will get killed).

Ok, one more thing (while I'm here)... My subs in the Coral Sea scenario will not to anything to enemy ships in the slot. I have 4 of them in there hoping that they will attack enemy troop transports, but they don't do a thing (they are set on sub patrol).

Thanks for your reply's...

Hey Buket,

I think I can address some of your questions.

If you want more CAP over a baso or Carrier TF, you can go into the air groups and increase the CAP level. For Carrier TF the number mentioned most often and seems to work for me is 80%. Of course by having such a high level you build up the fatiugue on your pilots and planes faster, so consider rotating the groups more often.

Inorder to get your Carriers to cover the trassport TF what works for me is selecting a destination hex for the carrier TF out of range of LBA and making sure that Patrol/Do Not Retire is set on, in the TF Screen(Right under Human/Computer Control). THen select a Fighter group on the Carriers for Long Range CAP, with the Transport TF as the target. This will provide cover for both TF's (providing you have more that one Fighter group).

I hope this answers your questions.

Also, Buket, you may want to set your Carrier TF to "Do Not React to Enemy," lest they charge into harm's way. Depending upon the length of the transport operation, you may need to create a replenishment TF to follow the Carrier TF so as to allow them to remain on station. Remember, however, that none of this will guarantee that they will strike offending enemy ships. You give orders to put the TF in position, set the search levels and other a/c missions - then you pray :)

Regarding the subs: hang in there. Don't forget that each hex is 30 miles across. That is a lot of ocean in which to find and engage a ship. They'll hit the jackpot eventually.

Good luck.

Most of the IJN ships moving in the slot in my games are fast transports and warships. They move at night at probably max speed. This could be, along with the previously mentioned hex size, why they haven't struck pay dirt yet.

Buket,
A question that I have about settings is altitude. What works best for which planes? For example B-17s at 10,000 feet for airfield/base attack but at 4,000 feet for naval attack? I haven't found the magic numbers yet. I know that dive bombers dive from 1,000 feet and that setting them high exposes them to flak at both altitudes so it seems logical to set dive bombers at 1,000 feet. But are there any guidelines for level bombers?
