True, but I have to say it already looks great!

I can't recall seeing a board with squares instead of hexes since Lou Zocchi's Battle of Britain.

Gary's WiR has 'em
Nice graphics and detailed equipment listing... seeing a Bloch shows the eye for detail, don't forget the Slovak Avia's
Why the preference to use squares instead of hexes?

Great. Will different units have different colors? (LW, SS, Army, etc.)

Yes, to some extent, i.e. SS->black,Guards->red, etc. Plus different command structure colors

In this thread please refer to post #4

A German armoured unit has broken through. It is painted light grey with a pale green centre. It is numbered 16-7.

Meantime, nearby, are 3 German HQ units all painted light grey with a pale green centre.

Which HQ is that unit attached to?

To begin with, the various colors within the unit icon denote the Army (for Axis) that that particular unit is assigned to. You can't see Soviet unit colors since the current player turn is Axis. If you look carefully at that screenshot, you will see that the far left Hq you mention is the Army level Hq (4 small x's above the icon symbol), the other two are corps Hq's (3 x's).

Now you can assign a unit directly to the higher level Hq, but you want to keep them within a 5 hex range for supply and support reasons, so in this case we can rule out that the unit in question is assigned to the Army Hq, unless of course he hasn't finished his move. But at this point it would be hard to say which of the 2 corps Hq's it is assigned until you click on the unit. At that time the selected unit will have a red border while other units within the same corps will have a yellow border and the Hq will have an orange one.

If you select an Hq, its border will be red, subordinate units will have a blue border, other Hq's within the same command will have yellow and the higher Hq will have an orange one. It's a pretty easy and intuitive system once you start playing it.

Andy

It would be ice if there was some means of color codeing what corp units belonged to, like a colored ban around the chit or what ever since distance to HQ is important.

Whoops saw this was answered above ... sort of ... nice to have the HQ color go dark if they are out of command control.

Really no need to go that far. When you select a HQ, all of the attached units are highlighted in blue. When you select a unit, its HQ is highlighted in orange and the HQ's other divisions are hightlighted in yellow. Very easy to follow and manage.

I don’t think a small screen shot will get me in trouble.

In this picture the selected HQ is outlined in Red and its subordinate divisions are outlined in blue. Its parent HQ is outlined in orange and the other HQs that belong to this Army are outlined in yellow. If I had of selected the Army HQ all of its subordinate HQs would be outlined in blue.

Cliff if I gave you a screen shot and how raw this game was 11 months ago, you would freak...Like I said on another post we have one great test group...Most ideas posted here so far have already been considered. Rick (kid) just posted an idea that one of you brought up...Guess we need another thread for this...

That map is absolutely gorgeous! I really like the subordinate command and superior command edge high lighting. Has a list of the NATO symbology being used been posted yet? Maybe still in flux? Would love to see it if possible. And holy crap! Is that a typcical Soviet air loss on first turn?

The air losses are still being tweaked. I should have not shown that yet, I just wanted to show the different aircraft in the game...

Ok, everyone's gonna hate me but I have to chime in on color choices. I have trouble differentiating colors especially red-green-orange and blue-green. The neon blue-yellow-red's are great and easy to tell apart but the orange-red is nex to impossible to tell apart.

Sorry for fussing about it.

It all looks very good, some of Gary's maps have been quite dark, but this one seems to give a reasonable contrast. The squares in the screenshot seem to be showing possession between the Germans and Soviets. The system of highlighting command looks good and I would vote for unit ID if it were possible, but that might be too much detail on the unit icons. A date display option would be nice, but not essential.

Thanks for the chance to see the screenshots, it helps a lot, for those who can only sit and wait.

Does the map change with the seasons? Brown for mud and white for snow?

Also, does the map include the names of cities or important rail junctions on it?

No to the first one and the art work is not done yet so I don't know about names on the map. You can get a lot of info on cities by using mouse over. You can also click on them and open up an information page.

Yes, the final map will include city names. As for showing weather on the map, we haven't decided or worked on that yet. It's an issue the artists are aware of, and something we would like to see, but we're not sure if we will have something in the final game or not.

Very cool! Here you can actually see the hexes.

If I may express one opinion, however, I hope you'll get rid of the vertical and horizontal stripes on the map. I can see why they're there, but they interfere with the viewing of the hex grid, which I think is more important.

Either that or make the hexsides darker. They are barely visible.
