Hi,

Got the original but never reaaly had the time to invest in it properly as I have other time consuming interests. Now getting rid of most of the games I have on my hard drive to finally get round to playing something for more than a couple of hours before it goes on the shelf forever.

I love the subject matter and am looking to start WitP original so is this new version worth the price of admission or just stick with the old game?

What are the points worthy of me risking a divorce by spending the weekly food money on AE?

Also if anyone thinks it is not worth it, speak up.

I am standing at the edge, help me take the leap or pull me back.

Cheers guys.

If you didn't have the time to invest in WITP, then you're not going to have the added time needed to invest in AE. Divided thoughts on this one, sticking to the old one will give you untold years of enjoyment, but then you won't be learning the new system if you ever do upgrade. Also it sounds like you couldn't do a PBEM, so AE will give you more challenge in this department...

If you had the time and inclination I'd get this one, but cutting your teeth on the much easier and as Joe himself has stated, less "work" version, might make the transition slightly easier (although as I previously stated, that is up for debate)...

I wonder how many newbies are already finding it overwhelming ? ... I don't think it is, but I've spent many hours playing the original and understanding the dynamics involved, so the step up is not too bad.

AE is the better choice if you aren't going to be PBEM'ing. Far stronger computer opponent.

...not to mention that you have 90 days to play with WitP and still get the WitP owners discount on AE if you choose to take the plunge...

I think you have your head in the right place. WITP/AE is selfish; it doesen't like wives, girlfriend, or other games stealing attention away from it
If your ready to make a serious commitment for the time involved to get into the game it will be worth it.

I don't know how much time you have put into WITP but since you already have it laying around; before getting AE at least get a refresher with WITP so you know this game suits your tastes because your going to be getting very intimate with AE if you take the leap.

If you have WiTP, go ahead and start playing it. HAving said that I have been playing WiTP only since late last year. Loved it. Have been Playing AE since Monday and like it even better. But that is just me

Thanks for the input guys.

Fired up WitP and played the tutorial for a while for a refresher and remembered how great this game is.

After having the mouse hovering for ages over the buy now button for AE I took the plunge. I need to go on a diet anyway.

Here is the wife after I told her what I had done. Here is me . Just kidding, she loves me really.

Will still play around with the original for a wee while. Going to wait for the manual to arrive for AE before I start it proper.

Actually found the map I had bought for this game when it was released; much too nice to write on. Pity the scale is different now. Need to get a printer that prints A3 for the new map download.

Just an idea, would it be possible to have the map download as seperate sections to print out and stick together?

Back to the game

Cheers

Does your printer support Poster Print? This is where it prints out the picture in pieces and can even include marks to shows the lines where to cut and where to overlap.

Just be warned it may take more ink than you realise.

Others on the forum have suggested you use the bucket fill function in a freeware graphics program like "The Gimp" to replace the blue ocean colour with white to reduce ink usage significantly.

Best of luck.

Hi Reg,

Thanks for the tip. In all these years of having my printer I never knew it had the poster print facility. DOH!!! Only just getting the hang of turning the PC on without the manual and a technical helpline.

Will invest in some ink and I think I have an old map case lying around.

Cheers

Just a quick suggestion. If time is an issue, you can take your time with WitP or it's AE sequel. Spend 15-20 minutes at a pop, save you changes and when you've completed all your moves, set aside a 30 minute block to execute the turn and watch the resolution phase.

After that walk away from it and mull over what you saw before looking over your units again, or jump right in for 5-10 minutes and make the most IMPORTANT changes first, then go off and think about what you need to do next while you spend time with the wife or kids or whatever else occupies your time. Take notes, and stay organized so when you come back you have a clear idea what needs to be done.

Also, coming up with your own system or checklist will help manage your time efficiently and maximize your experience.
