Ok, I'm a little concerned with some of the results I'm seeing vis a vis surface combat. For the last few turns I've had a Japanese amphib TF, escorted by a powerful SAG anchored by the BB Kongo & Haruna, along with 2 CA's, a CL and 6 DD's have it's lunch eaten by one or two obsolete Allied DD's. So far, I've been on the short end of these engagements by a long shot. Thoughts??

Looks to me that you need to put some ASuW vessels in the transport TF, and not just as part of the ASuW TF escorting it. Basically it looks as if the swarm of gnats is able to evade your sledgehammer.

I rarely send a transport TF into enemy territory without at least a couple of DDs in the TG with it. I like to throw in a light cruiser or two when I can, TBH.

I agree, DD/CA escorts have to be inside the TG, not following , otherwise they are not sailing together with the transports as a well organized convoy
and can not provide cover against subs or surface night attacks.

And night combat is very dangerous for everybody, a single DD can show out of nowhere, see a BB/CA, send torpedoes and desappear by chance,
or take instant close range salvo and sink...

Likewise try setting the Amphib TF to follow the SAG, rather than the SAG following the Amphib TF.

I second that!
All ways keep an escort inside a Transport TF.

I read through this combat report in detail and did not notice anything that seemed out of whack. What do you think is an issue?

I just saw the IJN lose BB Haruna to some UK DD's off of Khota Baru in a night engagement - DD's got away pretty much unscathed.  So they can slip in there, it seems.  Playing Allies, I'm not too broken up about it.

I'd bet you can go back through combat reports for the last couple of turns and find that the Japanese TF had engaged in combat - maybe more than once. If it was low on ammo if would refuse combat in almost every circumstance. In a low visibility situation, with a weak commander, without good detection levels on the enemy - all of these could contribute.

However, if you would like, post the pre-combat save in the Tech Support forum and I'll take a look.

The same thing happened at Miri a few turns ago; Java and Perth plus 3 DD's intercepted a transport TF landing troops and shot them up pretty well.  Then a SWTF made up of Maya, a CL and several DD's intervened.

Instead of blasting the Allied TF, Maya got torpedoed and sunk and the CL's got away with only minor shell damage and one DD seriously hit.  Then the British MTB's showed up from the other direction and torpedoed another transport, the SWTF intervened again and chased them all the way back to 3 hexes past Brunei!!!  The bigger ships would start an engagement, the MTB's would retreat one hex east, the SWTF would move there, and the process repeated several times.

Of course, Perth was sunk in a daytime attack by Bettys flying from Davao the next morning, and Java badly hit, but I figured trading two small CL's for a transport TF and Maya was well worth it.

I was thinking the same thing. Did everyone notice that most of those combats were fought in low vis and thunderstorms?

Looked like an almost perfect DD engagement of a much larger target with a concentrated SAG nearby. Bad weather, night, speed, and guts.

That is exactly what happend to me in the celebes, both sides had a CA,CL and several DD's and both sides avoided combat. I was furious untill I looked at my ships and they had no main gun ammo

Max visibility 1000yrds, Rain or thunderstorms and 0% to 32% moonlite = take a shot and hide in the night, take a shoot and hide in the night. DD's are like pesky little gnats.

Rev. I'm astonished it took you this long to post your comments.
If you think about it the weather sucked. I would think it is possible to slip in and take your shots and maybe get out without much reprisals.
I also agree that if you have escorts attached to the amphibs you have a much better chance of fighting off this sort of raid.

Old BBs and treaty cruisers were very poor ships to send into confined waters or very dark nights against smaller lighter ships-espeically early in the war. They were slow to turn, has older gunlaying equipment which targeted too slow,  were vulnerable to torpedoes and either had none or were not well equipped or trained in the use of radar.

The IJN high command was not happy about sending BCs into the slot, and the Americans only did it once (with near disasterous results) because they had nothing else to send.

What! I'll have you know that I am in the middle of a Honey-Do day. It's nothing short of a miracle that I found the post to begin with. Actually, we're busy getting ready for a combined 40th year high school reunion and have about a seven hour drive ahead of us Thursday. Naturally, what that means is the wife has discovered that she has 'nothing' to wear, and has the credit card off shopping. I am trying to prevent the paper that accumulates on a desk during such periods (as in all vacations) from developing a breeding program whilst I am away and multiplying exponentially.

I also put DD's with my troop carrying AK's, not to pretect the AK's, but to preserve the investment of the troops in time and training to get them to this point.

As for the AAR showing both sides try to withdraw?...Well, after the battle of Savo Island, the Japanese commander had a clear path to the Allied transports, but fearing the unknown, took a powder instead..
Many examples of this kind of inaction or withdrawal by a commander who should have been otherwise the victor.

Basically, as a former tin can sailor, you should never, ever, anywhere except where you absoltively posilutely are certain that nothing is likely to happen, (like perhaps between the Panama Canal and Pago Pago - and even then keep your finger and toes crossed!) send anything of any value whatsoever anywhere without an escort - whatever you can scrape together. If you don't have enough DD's send a minesweep, or even a tug. It is even more important to never send anything in harms way without tin cans around - Remember TAFFY Three!!!

Single digit illum, heavy precipitation, thunder, lightning.......tough to spot anything.......ship bouncing.....watch crew thinking about  "when is my watch over" rather than looking 100% of the time.......shoot and scoot is not just for SPG's.
