First, lets set the mood...

End of 1941

"East Wind, Rain" was one of three possible "execute" messages which Japanese diplomats around the world had been alerted to begin listening for on November 19th. They were told to monitor the regular news and weather broadcasts from Tokyo, just as they always did, but to pay especially careful attention to the phraseology employed to describe the weather.

If they heard the words "North Wind, Cloudy," it meant war with the Soviet Union.

If they heard the words "West Wind, Clear," it meant war with the British Empire.

And if they heard the words "East Wind, Rain," it meant war with the United States.

...at the Japanese embassy, Chief Petty Officer Kenici Ogemoto was listening to the weather report. When he heard those fateful words, he immediately rushed into the office of the naval attache and shouted "the winds blew." The attache ran with Ogemoto back into the radio room just in time to hear the Radio Tokyo announcer repeat the weather forecast, "Higashi no kaze ame" - "East Wind, Rain." Instantly workers at the embassy began destroying their cryptographic equipment and codebooks, while others took the secret documents from their files, piled them in huge heaps in the garden, and burned them. The Japanese diplomats knew that their embassies and consulates in the United States and its territories would soon be seized; and they themselves would soon be interned as enemy aliens pending their exchange for American diplomats in Japan. All their code-making and code-breaking hardware and software, and all their secret papers, had to be destroyed immediately.

Opening moves... 7-8 Dec 1941

War begins early on the morning of December 7th with a massive airstrike on Manilla. Three reasons for this.

1) I do fear his submarines. In my "learning games" against the AI, it has become quite clear that the submarine threat is a deadly one. I want to neutralize this threat for as long as possible. I do not fear the old battlewagons at Pearl Harbor, they should fear my Bettys and Long Lances instead.

2) I need to have the CVs avaliable as soon as possible in the NEI. AE is a whole new ballgame when it comes to the Japanese invasion of this area. To venture deep into the NEI without aircover is not recommended. My transport ships are more valuable than their weight in gold (or fuel) and I will not put them in harms way unless I absolutely have to. If we start out with a strike at Pearl Harbor, the CVs of the Kido Butai will not be able to join the battle for the NEI for weeks...weeks wasted traversing the endless space of the central pacific.

3) I want to conserve the airunits of the KB as much as possible. Even with surprise, a strike at Pearl can extract a heavy toll on the bombers.

The first invading forces hit Singkawang and Khota Bharu. Japanese paratroopers sieze the port facilities at Naga and Vigan, this to prevent the inevitable losses that comes from an amphibious assault.

Very good results from the first strike. Several submarines sunk, practically all of them damaged. We also manage to sink some of those dangerous PT boats. A cripling blow to the asiatic fleet. No Japanese losses.

All in all a good day for the Japanese forces. No major losses, we managed to cripple the Asiatic Fleet. The big setback is however that we failed to spot and attack Force Z. They made it all the way to Singora and forced a transport TF to retreat. That is bad in several ways, it delays my invasion, and it puts a huge dent in the NEI-operations. I will now have to protect every invasion against the possible appearance of the Prince of Wales.

These Bettys come from Cam Rahn Bay. I have diverted them to groundstrikes here because I do not want to risk taking excessive losses during the amphibious operations off Singkawang. I also do not want to fail my initial assault on this base since my plans rely on me getting an airfield here as soon as possible to cover the landings at Kuching and deeper into the NEI. As soon as I capture the base, I will station my Zeros here to protect my transports as well as the shipping lines towards Saigon. I see Singkawang as the key to unlocking the NEI defences on northern and western Borneo. Also, this will be the main line of attack into the NEI. Singkawang - then Oosthaven - then Java.

Post strike reconnassaince flight over Manilla Harbor, 14:45 local time, December 8.
Severe fires raging in the warehouse area and in the oil depots, smoke obscuring large parts of the harbor. Several ships on fire in the harbor area. Three AK-type vessels spotted attempting leaving harbor. See enclosed photograpies.

Here is an overview of the PI/NEI-area.

The KB has split into two, with Agaki and Kaga providing aircover off Borneo. I want the CVs with the heaviest armor in this area where I am expecting to meet heavy resistance from the RAF and the Dutch airforce.

The rest of the KB will head down to the Celebes sea to provide aircover for the Davao and Morotai landings. In this area Im expecting to meet some resistance from Dutch and US airunits, but I am not expecting heavy resistance, more nuiscance raids.

The Morotai and Davao invasion forces are loading or holding position at sea waiting for the aircover.

I expect to take Singkawang tomorrow, and will fly in Zeros and support units immideately. This will be a rudimentary defence against air attack until the CVs arrive in a couple of days. The Kuching TFs are heading towards their objective due to an error on my part. I forgot to put them in a holding pattern where they are now, so they are moving towards the invasion beaches. Could be a costly misstake on my part.

The escape of Force Z puts this early invasion into a completely different light. In a worst case scenario, Force Z will attack the Singkawang landings tomorrow. I will have 4 CAs and 4DDs covering the invasion, and the invasion taskforce itself is covered by a CA and a DD. It could go either way. Had this been witp I would not fear a 4CA vs 2BB-fight, since the Japs own the night and the Long Lances are more than deadly. However, there seems to be some indications that the Japs are not as superior in surface engagements in AE. Either way, it should be an interesting night.

The other Japanese BBs are on the way to the area. Right now they are in the PI-area.

I'm afraid that something has been badly distorted in the game when one passes on attacking battleships at Pearl Harbor, but, is happy to have sunk some of those "dangerous PT's" in the PI.

good read and intresting strategy by not attacking PH.

now, in WITP, i would agree with you, that the manila attack is far better then attacking the pacific fleet at pearl. why? because most of the time, you was not able to sink even one BB at pearl.

in AE on the other hand, it seems that you can finaly sink american BBs at pearl. in some AAR here in forum you can see 3, 4 or even 5 sunken US BBs after turn one. although this old BBs are too slow to escort CV-TFs, i fear them as japanese because of their famous nuke bombardements which can reduce the defense of islands into zero and make the allied invasions much much easier then without them.

i for my part would get as much BBs at pearl as i can (maybe with a following attack on 8th december) and deal with the subs in manila harbor with the betty/nells from formosa. the KB would set sail to truk, refuel and support the invasions of rabaul and PM, which i tend to secure asap for the empire.

but i wish you luck. anyone who plays japanese in this monster named AE earny respect and luck.

Well, to be honest, the two major reasons for attacking Manilla is because I want to remove his submarines, and I want to have the Japanese carriers avaliable for support in the NEI as soon as possible. If I attack Pearl on turn 1, I will lose something between 20-40 invaluable carrier aircraft and their even more invaluable pilots. I will also have the KB out of any action in the NEI for at least two-three weeks.

I just decided to prioritize the NEI over the BBs at Pearl...PTs are just a bonus.

I agree that it would be best to attack both Pearl and Manila, but the houserules we use only allow port strikes in one area on turn 1.

Then again, I dont really fear the BBs at Pearl. They are slow and old, and I dont think they will achieve much, besides serving as convoy escort, bombardment of some isolated base, or general surface combat in areas where I dont have any airunits...

I plan to be defensive in the south and central pacific though. Im just going to grab Tarawa, Rabaul, Guadalcanal, Lae (and maybe Port Moresby, but I dont think so). So his battleships will have to go up against my Betties and/or carrier aircraft.

(I will try to take the NEI as soon as possible, and then pay Ceylon a visit...Im going for the Indian gambit in this game)

Task forces break off...

In a very aggressive move, the Royal Navy press on with the attack of Force Z. They attack the Kota Bharu landing at night. BB Haruna carried the day for the Imperial Navy by scoring several main armament hits on both Repulse as well as Prince of Wales. Repulse sank about halfway through the engagement after being hit by a Long Lance from CA Atago. Somewhat disconcerting was the fact that the Prince of Wales was hit twice by the main armament of Haruna without penetrating the belt armor.

The engagement was indecisive for a long time with Prince of Wales staying out of the battle for several impulses, and when she finally engaged the Japanese force, her fire was inaccurate and sporadic.

I am very pleased with these results, not only did we sink the Repulse, we also protected the amphibious landings and removed Force Z as a potential threat to the operations in the NEI. If Prince of Wales survives without sinking, she will be out of the battle for a long time.

The Lexington has a run of bad luck, followed by a run of good luck. The second attack saw four torpedos fail to detonate, I am pretty sure another hit would have been the end of the CV. The fuel storage explosion should mean that Lexington will be out of battle for at least three months. I do not dare hope she sinks, in the second attack she was only "on fire", and not heavy fires or heavy damage. Still, it is a very good attack.

This was off Palmyra by the way. I find it reasonable to assume that the Enterprise is in this vincinity aswell. Not many allied players keep his CVs separated.

We fail miserably and pay a heavy price over Clark. The initial sweep fails to be effective. No doubt thanks to the fact that not a single Zero from Tinian saw fit to fly missions today. Instead of overwhelming the defences with 30+ Zeros, we impale ourselves on the CAP with insignificant Oscars and unescorted Bettys. I can ill afford these losses.

It seems the airforce made a difference at Kota Bharu. The allied assault value compared to the adjusted assault indicates that the commonwealth forces are in great dissaray. Really good news, I did not want to have this landing fail, it would have put a dent in the timetable and cost alot of casualties in the follow-up landings.

Task forces break off...

A good thing that I managed to bring in the Japanese CAs to cover the Singkawang landing. The battle was not as one-sided as the combat reply might indicate. The two hits on Mogami came from DeRuyter, they were penetrating and caused additional damage. Mogami was burning heavily. Before a LL hit the Dutch CL, it could have gone either way. The engagement distance was small enough to make any hit potentially devastating.

In the end, it was the Japanese night fighting experience that made all the difference I suppose.

Malay/upper NEI.

Zeros and Oscars at Kota Bharu and Singora are ordered to do a sweep over Georgetown. I need to establish air superiority over the upper Malayan penninsula.

Most of the surface combat TF's are heading to Cam Rahn Bay to replenish their ammo, leaving Kota Bharu undefended and Singkawang defended by two CAs. I dont think the Kota Bharu landings are in danger of being attacked by surface ships now though, and Ive just fought off the major Dutch surface group at Singkawang, so I believe this is a good time to replenish the ammo.

Kuching should fall tomorrow, after that I will have two airbases large enough to stage naval bombers from, that should close the sea-area between Singapore and Java down for the allies. After having achieved that, I will start focusing on the next step on the road to Java - Oosthaven.

I am also in the process of shifting ASW units from Japan and the Phillipines to this area. With the threat of USN submarines gone for a while, I can focus my ASW-assets in this area. The Dutch and RN subs are deadly, and must be handled with accordingly.

Ive flown in 20 Zeros to Singkawang to provide LRCAP over the base and the landings of Kuching. The Bettys and Nells in Indo-China are set to ground attack Kuching to provide airsupport to the shock attack scheduled to take place tomorrow.

Mindanao
Meanwhile, over at Mindanao, the KB have orders to attack both the ground units as well as the airfield at Davao. Shokakus Zeros are providing aircover for the invasion TF that is just off the screen to the south of Davao. I expect the landings to take place the day after tomorrow, meaning turn 2 in the next combat round.

Phillipines
Ive flown in a Zero squadron as well as the Tojos from China to do a sweep at Clark tomorrow. All the Bettys are resting, I will try to clear the skies over Clark with fighters, and then do another attempt with the bombers. I am using Naga as halfway-point to ferry Zeros from Takao to the south.

The Bettys who took a beating over Clark last turn are refitted and ordered to rest. Their morale is in shambles, and Ive changed their leader to someone with very high inspiration (but very crappy stats otherwise). It will take a while to nurture these guys back into fighting order.

The remnants of Kanoya Ku K-1 Detachment.

As you can see, the unit lost 16 bombers in those two attacks. One pilot survived, the others are MIA or KIA. Morale in shambles.

You can see the stats of the new officer Im bringing in to try to turn this unit back into something at least resembling fighting condition. You can also see the new pilots brought in to fill the gaps. Not really the same quality as the other crews...

A big day for the Empire today. We managed to catch several allied tankers and sink them. That will definitively hurt the allies in the early months of 1942. Also Hong Kong falls, freeing up enough troops to start serious preparations for the invasion of Java. I have started converting a dozen xAKs to carry more troops. The conversions will take less than a week and after that I should be ready to go directly for Java.

Overall, everything is going on schedule. With the fall of Davao, I have secured Mindanao. Enough troops have been unloaded at Vigan and Naga to finish the Phillipine campaign. I am just waiting for the arrival of one more division at Naga and then I can begin the move on Manilla. It is only Malaya that is somewhat slower than expected. I made the misstake of moving the Imperial Guards & Co via "move" instead of via rail, so they have come no further than Bangkok. It should go faster now though, since Ive ordered them to use the railline from here on down.

Akagi and Kaga is positioned just off Singkawang. The Kates find and destroy an unescorted convoy of fully loaded tankers heading south in the waters between Java and Borneo. This is a heavy blow to the allies, not only do they lose the fuel that was probably headed for Australia, but they lose these heavy tankers aswell. This will put a huge dent in the allied logistics for a couple of months.

About the Hong Kong DD's...I just dont understand why I didnt get them all. They were attacked by 26 Kates and 11 Vals...and they only managed to score a single hit. That is apalling.

By the way...Lexington shows up on the "sunk ships"-screen...dare I hope? Or is this some evil fog-of-war-effect?

Battle of Manilla

Well, today was Adlertag over the Phillipines. A couple of fighter sweeps followed by several bombing runs from four different bases managed to overwhelm the allied defenders. I hope this day managed to break the back of the USAAF in the Phillipines. The base seems closed after this when I look at the intel I get of the base, but I am surprised at the low number of runway hits from my Bettys and Nells. Just to make sure I will follow up with similar attacks tomorrow.

Vigan is now a lvl 4 airfield, and I have ~50 Zeros and 9 Tojos based there to control the skies over the Phillipines.

It seems the morale of the USAAF is crumbling, many of the US fighters turned back after the initial clash. I have not been able to close the airfield yet, but his pilots must be tired and with low morale by now. I have rotated two of my fighter units back to Takao, and every turn I am resting one Zero unit in order to be able to keep up the pace. My fighter units are hovering at 90-morale and 10-fatigue, and that is well within acceptable levels.

Fighters from Akagi and Kaga take a heavy toll on RAF bombers from Singapore. I would expect him to stop these attacks soon, my ships are well protected here, both from Akagi/Kaga as well as from Kuching and Singkawang.

No, thats just me editing the combat report so it wont take as much space. Ive also edited away lots of pointless air-attacks in China and some other irrelevant stuff.

I had trouble with escort/sweep in my game too.
It helps a lot to have an Air HQ at the base and attaching escorting fighters and bombers to that HQ. Also, set fighters and bombers to the same altitude.

Hi!
I have been trying to sweep the target hex before the bombers arrive. I cant base bombers and fighters together since the fighters lack range to the target. The Bettys and Nells that attack Manilla come from Cam Rahn Bay, Hainan and Formosa. Not even Zeros can escort them from that far away.

It is risky, because sometimes the sweep fails to clear a path through the CAP, and sometimes the sweep-mission is cancelled, leaving the bombers to face the CAP alone...something that took a very heavy toll on one of my Betty-squadrons in the beginning of the war. But on the other hand, I think I am slowly gaining the upper hand in the skies above Manilla...and I dont think my losses have been too extreme. But perhaps I should have cancelled the bombing missions and only done fighter sweeps...

hey bluebook.. i think this is my favorite aar so far.. im hoping you do well.. so i think you've sank 7 tankers so far.. i dont know because i haven't played this game at all.. but since he has all his bbs left and now you taken away ?25%? (guess) of his fuel transport capacity.. how limited do you think his operations will be.. maybey you could guess where his oil transports will be and bag a few more in a sneak raid since you know he wont be wasting precious fuel patroling around the pacific..anyway im a total noob just thinking of some things.. GL

I believe the loss of the tankers will hurt him alot in the Australia-NEI-region. I think it means he wont be able to station ships at Darwin for a long time for example. The tankers he has left will be needed to shuttle fuel to Ceylon, India and Perth, but what he lacks now are the tankers to take the fuel from the big transport hubs (like Perth) to the frontline bases (like Darwin). I think this will be most notable in the northern Australia-region, since the US tankers will be able to get fuel to Brisbane, Noumea, Pago Pago, etc. But to answer your question, I believe his remaining tankers are going back and forth between Karachi and Ceylon and Perth. I might try to raid those sea-lanes later, but I need to secure the NEI oilfields first.

So I think it will hurt him on the Commonwealth front, but not on the US front.

As for the US BBs, you raise an interesting question...where will they show up? Im expecting the US BBs to show up around Noumea soon. I dont think he will use them in the NEI, the trip around southern Australia takes too long, and all battles in the NEI will be fought inside Betty-range...something very dangerous for the old BBs. My bet is that he will use the BBs to defend the islands between Noumea and Pearl Harbor. Then, eventually, when the time comes for allied offensives he will use them to bombard my bases.

As you may have noticed, I have put very little effort into the central and south pacific. My plan is to take Rabaul and Lae, together with the surrounding islands and bases, also Tarawa and Wake and then start building up my defences. I hope he is fortifying his islands between Pearl Harbor and Noumea, because that is a total waste of resources. I will not fight him in that region. Instead I will focus on taking the NEI as soon as possible, and after that...India.
